[13] A Slight Tension in the Air
I couldn't continue to watch her and keep a straight face. It was damn near impossible. Her cheeks had turned a rosy pink the moment she opened the door to our space and all because I hadn't gotten my shirt on fast enough.
Note to self, change like the flash in the future. Or possibly a sloth?
I forced the evil chuckle down at the thought. Her heated gaze wasn't something I wanted to provoke regardless of how fascinating my puzzle had become overnight. In the darkness of our room, Nick had admitted to being wrong a lot, with words that guilt clung to without mercy.
Either she had said or done things she didn't mean. It didn't really matter to me which it was. The fact that she had guilt at all only proved my original assessment correct, she wasn't the classic rebellious teen girl she wanted the rest of the world to see.
I just needed to figure out what it was that had her feeling so guilty.
"Why am I not surprised," She mumbled under her breath.
I kept my back towards her, my smile hidden from her view. She would be quite the riddle to crack. Her filter was faulty but not to the point where every thought came tumbling through her lips. I could tell she held back, her eyes flared every time she mentally bit her tongue.
It was cute.
Air-filled my lungs while I tried my hardest to place a neutral expression back on my face. She wanted impersonal, had all but asked for it last night, so that's what she'd get. Who was I to deny a girl's desires? That meant I couldn't give her a hard time, even if I was dying to do just that. I liked the color her cheeks turned when she became embarrassed. It was for the best though and I knew it.
"I gotta get to my biology lecture. See ya tonight?"
I decided not to stick around for a response, a good choice I might add. If the crease across her brow and quiet curse under her breath was any indication she was both furious and agitated at our quick exchange. Sure it wasn't ideal but it was a hell of a lot better than the blank expression from earlier. That one had made my stomach tighten.
As I went to pass by her I inhaled the faint scent of bacon.
At least sneaking out early proved fruitful.
Instead of casting Nick from my mind - what I intended to do - I found myself wondering how angry she actually was with me. Was she stomping around our room right now cursing me as she got ready for her day? I bet she had a frown as deep as the Grand Canyon on her brow still. To me it didn't seem like a huge deal, guys went shirtless all the time, but for her it was.
I knew I frustrated her, it was hard not to take notice that I did. Part of me figured a large portion of her anger stemmed from that rather than the simple fact that I didn't have a shirt on.
No one had ever referred to me like that though. Everyone knew me as Clark, the easy-going guy. The agreeable, non-argumentative giant who couldn't hurt a fly. To be frustrating was something new and I had to hand it to Nick, it made her more intriguing.
With ten minutes to spare I seated myself in the lecture hall and pulled out a blank notebook. Truth be told I was quite the brainiac. I loved to learn new things, even if I had zero interest in it. My dad always told me that knowledge was power and so far he had been right on the money. I guess in that aspect I was a lot like him, learning for the sake of learning. It was a large chunk of the reason I even agreed to come here.
A glance at the clock showed three to ten. The professor glanced up at us from the front of the classroom, her eyes scanning the crowd of students as she silently counted us in her head.
"Good morning and welcome..." She started to address us until she was interrupted.
Four words were all she was allowed to speak before the metal door to the room flew open. Every head in the room veered around at once to catch a glimpse of where the metallic clang came from and allowed everyone to see the same thing.
A chuckle hung between my lips as my eyes landed on a winded, still in her pajamas Nick. The only difference in her appearance since we spoke only ten minutes ago was her hair was gathered on top of her head in a chaotic sort of halo. She looked flustered which I found humorous and slightly arousing given the nature of our last encounter. Maybe I found this particularly funny because I knew why she was so unsettled and that it was me who had put her in this state. It was satisfying in a seriously messed up way.
Her peculiar olive orbs found mine from where she stood in the doorway.
I need to find out what color they are.
They radiated aggravation.
They sizzled with determination.
They burned with a vengeance.
And they told me that whatever we had going on between us was just getting started.
These two are going to be spectacular once they are together <3
