Chapter 9 - Mistake
Hurricanepaw POV
"Jaypaw?" Hurricanepaw looked around the Apprentice Den.
"Hm?" Jaypaw looked up,"You must be the new apprentice, right?"
"Mhm!" She nodded,"Does the name... Stevie, mean anything to you?"
Jaypaw thought for a moment,"Hm, no."
"Right, right." Hurricanepaw sat down,"Well, I hope we can become friends, yeah?"
"I don't see why not, you seem like you'd make a good warrior." Jaypaw agreed.
"Thanks!" Hurricanepaw purred, edging closer to Jaypaw.
Jaypaw chuckled,"Clingy."
"Hush." Hurricanepaw shook her head.
"It's true, though." Jaypaw batted her ear.
Hurricanepaw rolled her eyes, chuckling slightly. It was good to be back.
Maplepaw POV
"I surrender. Please get off me." Maplepaw sighed.
Mousekit was stood on her back and Goosekit was nearby, unsure whether to get closer or not.
"Never!" Mousekit announced, puffing out her chest.
"Would you do it if I asked nicely?" Bramblepaw cocked her head to the side.
Mousekit looked at Bramblepaw funny before hopping off of Maplepaw's back and pouncing on Goosekit.
"What did I do?" He squeaked.
"Exist." Mousekit meowed.
"Bramblepaw! Maplepaw!" Pineflower called out, padding inside the Nursery,"It's nearly time for your ceremonies!"
Bramblepaw mewed in excitement as Maplepaw got up and shook her fur. With all the babysitting, she'd forgotten how much time had passed.
The kits were now both two moons and Bramblepaw and Maplepaw were going to become a Warrior and a Medicine Cat respectively.
They both followed after Pineflower, Bramblepaw right by her heels and Maplepaw lagging behind slightly, perking up when she noticed Venomfang right at the front of the crowd of cats.
Bramblepaw decided to stick around to watch Maplepaw's ceremony before her and Pineflower went to the Moonstone.
Maplepaw hopped onto the tree root along with Duskstar, who began the ceremony.
"I, Duskstar, Leader of Duskclan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code and I commend her to you as a warrior in her turn. Maplepaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your clan, even at the cost of your life?"
"Yes, I do!" Maplepaw smiled proudly.
"Then by the powers of Starclan, I give you your warrior name. Maplepaw, from this moment forward, you will be known as Mapleheart. Starclan honours your skill in battle and we welcome you as a full warrior of Duskclan."
Mapleheart eagerly turned, proudly staring into the crowd of cats.
"Mapleheart! Mapleheart! Mapleheart!" They chanted.
Maplepaw purred in excitement as she hopped down, rubbing against Venomfang.
"I'm so proud of you!" Venomfang grinned, gently licking her ear.
Mapleheart then looked up to see if she could see Bramblepaw and Pineflower but... They had already left.
"T-that's fine." Mapleheart thought,"She didn't need them anyway."
Bramblepaw POV
Bramblepaw sighed quietly. She felt quite bad about not going over to congratulate Mapleheart but Pineflower had picked her up by her scruff and took her some distance away before putting her down.
"It's for the best, Bramblepaw." Pineflower hummed,"She'll come around."
And with that, Bramblepaw was lead into a cave with a hole in the roof, the moon shining through and laminating the cavern walls.
"Woah.." Bramblepaw gasped as Pineflower padded over to the Moonstone.
She beckoned Bramblepaw over and began the ceremony.
"I, Pineflower, of Duskclan, call upon my Warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. She has trained hand to understand the ways of Medicine Cat and with your help, she will serve her Clan for many moons. Bramblepaw, do you promise to uphold the ways of a Medicine Cat, to stand apart from rivalry between Clan and Clan and to protect all cats equally, even at the cost of your life?"
"I do." Bramblepaw nodded confidently.
"Then, by the powers of StarClan, I give you your true name as a Medicine Cat. Bramblepaw, from this moment you will be known as Bramblesong. StarClan honors your kindness and we welcome you as a full medicine cat of Duskclan." Pineflower smiled at her.
Bramblesong hopped around excitedly before touching her nose to the Moonstone.
When her eyes opened, everything was dark. Her legs froze as she saw a group of owls fly overhead, although she was reassured by the presence of Pineflower. A red liquid, blood, pooled at her paws before they both awoke... What the hell did that vision mean?
Marshriver POV
"B-but I-" Marshriver froze up.
"You want to be a real Owlclan warrior, don't you?" Shadowflower, the black she-cat and Owlclan Deputy padded around him.
"Well, yes but-"
"Then kill him." She glared at the ginger rogue in front of them.
"But it's against the code-"
"We at Owlclan care not for the foolish rules of Starclan, they do not control us!" Shadowflower hissed,"Now... Kill him, Marshriver."
Marshriver edged closer, still hesitant.
"If you don't... You'll be our next meal instead." Shadowflower purred.
Marshriver could feel himself shaking but he closed his eyes and jumped onto the cat, sinking his teeth into the neck. He stopped after a while, the rouge now dead.
"Good job, Marshriver. Owletstar will be so proud." Shadowflower began to groom him as he sat there in both shock and horror at his actions.
He'd... He'd just killed another cat. He had betrayed Starclan. Was he... Was he a monster?
