Felix was, without a doubt, the happiest omega on Earth.
He had a wonderful job, a wonderful pack, and a pair of wonderful mates. Really, there was nothing more he could or would ask for. Hell, some mornings he woke up in the arms of his beloveds, and he found himself staring at them in muted awe, wondering how he had gotten this lucky.
(He probably saved a country in his past life – or two, considering the two amazing alphas with whom he was mated.)
No one could really tell how it had happened, just that it did. For the group to become a pack wasn't unusual, most K-Pop groups usually turned out that way. As such, it wasn't unusual for some of the members to pair off and become mates. They lived very stressful lives that were, ironically, very closeted, meaning they couldn't meet many people outside of their group, and bonds were obviously going to form considering how many obstacles they all overcame together.
All that to say, it wasn't much of a surprise when Changbin announced to their fans that he was mated with Felix. It was a bit more of a surprise when Hyunjin announced the same, thus revealing their three-way relationship to the world.
It wasn't unheard of, of course. Polyamorous relationships had become quite the norm in the past few decades, but they usually involved one alpha and two omegas, or one alpha, one beta, and one omega – not two alphas and one omega.
The general populace agreed on the stereotype that Alphas couldn't possibly be in a happy relationship together because of the need for dominancy and control their subgender imposed on them. As such, it appeared impossible for two alphas to not only be in a relationship together, but to also share an omega – Alphas weren't know for sharing, considering how possessive and protective they could get.
But, somehow, Changbin, Hyunjin, and Felix made it work.
While Changbin and Hyunjin were both alphas, they both had very different personalities, and they didn't like to stick to stereotypes. Changbin was the unspoken leader of their little trio, but Hyunjin wasn't the type to fight for dominancy. He was the softer of the two, in a sense, and he wasn't driven by his instincts like most alphas – as long as his two mates were safe and happy, the rest didn't matter to him.
Of course, little fights were bound to break out from time to time – mostly whenever one of their ruts came up, because their instincts went haywire whenever that happened – but Felix usually managed to make them stop before anything could get out of hand.
Even though Felix was an omega, he was quite outspoken, and he didn't have much regard for subgenders and the stereotypes attached to them. He did what he wanted to do, said what he wanted to say, and lived his life uncaring of what society might think of him for not fitting the omega-mold it tried to impose.
His boyfriends only loved him all the more for it, though.
Some alphas might hate when their omega talked back or put up some resistance, but they absolutely adored Felix and his uncharacteristic ways. They loved his witty replies, his provocative sense of humor, how he didn't take any bullshit from anyone even though society expected him to lay low and let his alphas protect him. Felix didn't need protection, and he was always very happy to prove it.
Felix didn't need an alpha in his life, let alone two – but beyond their respective subgenders, he loved the pair as much as they loved him, so he simply learned to live with it. He didn't mind the little displays of possessiveness that sometimes took over one of them whenever they were out in public (or at least, not as much as he used to), and he often indulged in their "little alpha quirks" because he found them quite adorable.
The only times Felix truly submitted to them was in the bedroom. Even outside of their ruts and his heats, their bed was the only place he would willingly let himself fall prey to his omega instincts and completely give in to his subgender.
(But even then, he could become a bit of a brat, depending on his mood. And, if he felt really playful, he would rile them up until one of them snapped and completely forced him to submit – which they all thoroughly enjoyed, of course.)
But all in all, Felix was quite happy with his life right now. Even though their relationship was a bit unusual, even though their dynamics didn't exactly match up to the prejudices, he really couldn't be happier.
It's really too bad that happiness wasn't meant to last.
.
Felix was humming under his breath as he picked up his order from the counter. He was heading to the company building for some dance practice with the others, and had volunteered to pick up some drinks for his boyfriends on the way there.
Normally, they wouldn't have let him. Or rather, they would have insisted on at least one of them accompanying him. Even if they knew he could handle himself, they didn't like the thought of their precious omega being alone in public. However, Changbin was busy working on a track, and Hyunjin had already been slaving away on creating a new choreography, and so neither of them could afford leaving at the moment. As such, Felix had decided to pick up their favorite drinks to cheer them up and give them a boost of energy for the day.
Just as he stepped outside with the tray of drinks, however, he was stopped by a young man – an alpha, Felix easily recognized. The freckled boy came to a halt, eyeing the newcomer with a mix of curiosity and wariness.
"Hello. Can I help you?"
"Hi! You're Lee Felix, from Stray Kids, right?" greeted cheerfully the alpha. "I'm a big fan!"
It wasn't rare for Felix to be recognized, their group was quite popular, after all. Still, their fans were mostly girls and young women, so he was always pleasantly surprised whenever a guy introduced himself as a fan.
"Ah, yes, that's me. It's really nice to meet you...?"
But the alpha didn't answer, merely reaching out to grab Felix's wrist. The boy's eyes widened, startled, and he instantly tugged to try and free himself. The alpha only pulled harder, though, making him yelp as he stumbled into his chest.
"What are you—"
"Stray Kids doesn't need a stupid omega like you. Don't speak, don't call for help. Go jump from a roof and free them from the burden you are."
Felix's breath hitched as the Alpha Voice made his ears ring, rattling through his bones and immediately plunging his mind into a thick, inescapable mess of clouds and fuzziness. The command made his muscles cramp, his heart seize, his blood boil – he dropped the drinks and, without a word, he started walking.
The use of Alpha Voice was illegal, for the simple reason that it was impossible for an omega to directly oppose it. Not only did it rob them of their free will, but it could also inflict lasting psychological damage, depending on the command, and the physical backlash could be very dangerous to their overall health.
Felix knew that he didn't want to obey, but his feet were moving on his own. He could hardly form a coherent thought, the fog in his mind growing thicker by the second and plunging him in a semi-conscious state. He wanted to stop, to scream for help, but the Alpha Voice's hold was too strong, and all he could do was sit back and watch as his body became nothing more than a puppet, slowly but surely making its way back to the company – that was the only thing he could control, where he was headed.
He only said a roof, he reasoned, desperately fighting back for control, and failing miserably. If I go there, I can get help before I- before I—!
The walk back to the company was absolutely atrocious, and painful too. His muscles kept on cramping up, and he was beyond terrified. He'd never been the victim of an Alpha Voice before, and he only now understood why he'd been warned so heavily against it when he was younger.
He stepped inside, the receptionist cheerfully greeting him, but he completely ignored her and made a beeline for the elevators. The poor beta woman stared after him in confusion, because Felix was normally very sweet and wasn't the type to ignore people, and the freckled omega prayed she realized something was wrong and stopped him.
She didn't. She figured he was just having a bad day and let him go.
Damn it! Damn it, damn it, damn it!
He tried to force his body to at least take the stairs, to prolong the inevitable and give himself more time to find help, but he was already stepping inside the elevator. His hand was shaking as he pressed the button for the highest floor.
Please, someone, help me...!
.
Hyunjin had been taking a short water break when he felt it – the harsh, almost painful tug on one of his mating bonds. He almost instantly scrambled back to his feet, breath short and heart hammering in his chest.
Is Felix okay?
But as quickly as it appeared, his precious omega's distress vanished. It left Hyunjin a little dazed, because Felix's bond was never so... silent. Their bond usually thrummed with cheerfulness and energy, sometimes even buzzing with it if something particularly good happened, but it was never so... flat.
The unusual state of their bond put him on edge but, for the life of him, he couldn't figure out what was going on. So, he decided to seek out Changbin. Hopefully, the other alpha would help him understand what was going on. Once he reached the third floor, he found his mate exactly where he left him earlier that morning – in the studio, that is. However, the moment he stepped inside, he could tell something was wrong, because Changbin was completely still in his chair, with a frown marring his features.
"What's wrong, love?" he asked, a tad worried.
"Did you feel something weird with your bond with Felix?"
The mere fact that he asked made his skin crawl uncomfortably, and the bad feeling that had been budding in his guts suddenly bloomed into outright dread.
He gulped, nodding stiffly. "That's why I came up. Do you have any idea of what it was?"
"No, I can't figure it out. I tried calling him, but he's not answering his phone. I know he's okay, we'd have felt it if he was injured, but the bond is just..."
"Flat," completed Hyunjin, feeling a little sick. "What do we do?"
"I don't know. I want to go out and find him, but there's no way of tracking him down when the bond is acting so weirdly," sighed Changbin, running a hand through his hair, frustrated. "It's almost- almost as if he's completely disconnected."
"We can't stay here," snapped Hyunjin, now really anxious. "If he's hurt—"
The elevator dinged in the background, followed by soft footsteps. A figure passed in front of the studio, and it took the pair a moment to realize it was their mate. A few seconds passed before their eyes widened.
"Felix!?"
Why hadn't they felt him? What was going on?
They rushed outside of the studio, and found the door at the end of the hallway wide open. Why had Felix gone outside? Growing more worried by the second, the alphas didn't waste any time in running out to the roof.
What they found made the entire world stop.
"What—Lix!"
The freckled omega was now swinging a second leg over the ledge of the roof, both of his feet dangling in the void below him. He was stiff, yet shaking violently, and he looked like he was fighting his own body when he briefly turned his head to look at them. There were tears streaming down his face, pain and despair written all over his expression. He opened his mouth, tried to say something, but no sound came out.
And then, without warning, he pushed himself off the ledge.
"FELIX!!!"
Hyunjin's horrified scream was enough to snap Changbin out of his horrified daze, and the two alphas instantly rushed to the ledge. A wail clawed its way out of Hyunjin's throat when he saw their precious mate three floors below, his limbs bent in unnatural angles and blood pooling under his head.
.
"He's going to live."
Both alphas instantly slumped in their chairs, relief washing over them so intensely they almost passed out. Still, as relieved as they were that Felix hadn't died – a miracle, really, they still didn't understand how that was possible – they knew it was only the beginning of a very difficult time for all of them.
"What- what happened to him?" croaked out Hyunjin.
He hadn't stopped crying ever since they saw Felix jumped.
The doctor sighed heavily. "I'm afraid your mate was the unfortunate victim of an Alpha Voice. The usual symptoms of physical backlash have already started making an appearance and, from what we've gathered, he's fought against it 'til the very end – which only makes the backlash worse, unfortunately."
This certainly wasn't what either of them expected to hear. On one hand, they were intensely relieved, because this meant Felix hadn't actually jumped of his own accord. On the other hand, however, it meant someone had actively sought to harm their mate.
"From what we've gathered, he managed to survive the fall by attempting to catch his fall by grabbing one of the window ledges on the way down. His shoulder was dislocated on the spot, but it was enough to slow his fall and allow him to land on his feet rather than on his front or his back. Both of his legs broke on impact, but he still hit his head hard enough to suffer from a very severe concussion, and there will most certainly be lasting damage from those injuries.
Physical rehabilitation will take a long time, and he'll never be able to walk the same again. The bones were broken and splintered in several places – it's already a miracle we didn't have to amputate one of them. However, with a lot of patience and hard work, he should eventually be able to regain a certain amount of autonomy."
"We'll do anything we can to help him through this," assured firmly Changbin, fighting back the urge to cry. "What about- what about psychological damage?"
The doctor sighed again, flipping a page of his file. "Right now, there's no way to properly evaluate his mental state. It goes without saying that there'll be lasting damages, but you'll need to get him evaluated by a certified psychologist to better understand the consequences this entire ordeal had on him, and how to deal with them. But I can... I can tell you that it's not going to be pretty."
The two alphas exchanged watery looks and grim expressions. It killed them to know their mate had gone through so much, and would be forced to endure so much more, but they were determined to help him through it.
(It was their fault. Had they just gone with him, he wouldn't have been assaulted. Had they been faster, he wouldn't even have stepped foot on the roof. Had they not frozen in place, they could have caught him before he jumped.
It was their fault.)
"Can we- can we see him?" finally asked Hyunjin, swallowing thickly.
"Of course. He's under heavy pain medication right now, so he won't wake up for a while – but trust me, it's for the best right now."
It didn't matter. Awake or not, they'd never leave Felix's side again.
.
Felix couldn't talk.
It was one of the lasting traumas. They guessed one of the commands that had been given was that he couldn't talk to anyone, and his brain proved unable to shake off the effects of the Alpha Voice – if he would ever talk again, no one could tell.
He had absences, too – times when his eyes glossed over and his face slackened and no amount of outside stimuli could shake him out of it. Those instances, quite frequent, scared his mates the most because their bond always went flat, just like it happened that day – and needless to say, the feeling always chilled them to the bone.
Thankfully enough, his severe head injury didn't damage his brain – a miracle, really, but they'd take anything they could get at that point. However, while the impact didn't result in anything like retrograde amnesia or a serious loss psychological autonomy, it did mess with the psychological aspect of his subgender.
"By fighting back against the command as much as he did, and ultimately forcing his way through the haze to try and save himself, he thoroughly messed up his own psych," had explained the psychologist working on his case. "It's a little like when an alpha goes feral – except instead of being a danger to others, Felix will be a danger to himself."
It was basically as if a flip had been switched, which developed in a mild case of multiple personality disorder – there was Felix, and then there was Felix completely possessed by his inner omega, submitting to his most basic instincts and needs and practically losing himself to that side of him.
The harsh impact along with the lasting effects of the Alpha Voice had thrown the balance between his human side and his omega side out of whack, and there was absolutely nothing that could be done about it.
He couldn't walk. He couldn't use his right hand either, since his entire arm had severely suffered from when he tried to catch his fall. As such, he had to rely entirely on his mates when it came to moving, bathing himself, eating, and any other mundane task that required a considerable physical effort.
He had tremors, too. Spasms, sometimes. It'd get better over time, but it was one of the numerous lasting effects of the fall.
And of course, there was the trauma. Being assaulted by an Alpha Voice and basically being trapped in his own body while it threw itself off a roof in a mockery of a suicide attempt was bound to have severe repercussions on his already shaky mental states. As such, it didn't surprise anyone when his nights began being troubled by intense nightmares. He also suffered from severe PTSD, which rendered him unable to face an unknown Alpha without his mates by his side.
(He still had a hard time being face to face with their alpha packmates. Chan, Minho, and Jeongin were extremely saddened that they couldn't even check up on him without triggering a panic attack, but they understood the situation and gave him time to heal.)
He also developed a pretty bad case of separation anxiety – and also, unsurprisingly, an intense fear of heights. Changbin made the mistake of bringing him to the window once, and it had triggered an attack so intense they had to sedate him so he wouldn't accidentally hurt himself.
All in all... it was difficult.
It was difficult, but Changbin and Hyunjin were with Felix for every step of the way. They had failed him once – they wouldn't fail him again.
It was difficult... but they'd get through it, eventually. Together.
.
When Felix was finally cleared to leave the hospital, they moved him into a separated apartment on the ground floor, just under the dorms shared by the rest of the pack. While he had slowly started getting used to his alpha packmates, they didn't want to push him too fast and cause a relapse, so everyone had agreed for the trio to live separately, while still being close-by.
It wasn't as big as the pack's dorm, but it was cozy. Their shared bedroom was filled to the brim with comfy pillows and blankets and plushies that carried the scents of Felix's alphas, which definitely helped lessen the effects of the separation anxiety – they could now leave him alone in the room for a few minutes, so long as they didn't actually leave him alone in the apartment.
The living room had been turned into a proper gym, of sorts, where Felix's physical rehabilitation began. They had an omega trainer that came by every three days to properly monitor his progress and, the rest of the time, Changbin and Hyunjin took it upon themselves to help and encourage Felix through his exercises.
It was exhausting and frustrating for the omega, and they were mindful not to coddle him too much while still taking care of him once he was done.
He still couldn't talk. They had grown used to reading his body language and the emotions shared through their bonds to understand what he wanted or needed but, because of Felix's constant weakness in his hand, and the tremors that took over his fingers whenever he forced them too much, he couldn't write what he wanted to say, nor could he learn KSL to try and communicate.
But they made do. Their dynamics had shifted to a bit of an extreme, and Felix could always count on his mates to know what he needed even before he tried to tell them.
The entire group went on a hiatus. Details pertaining to Felix's incident weren't shared to the general public, but videos of him jumping from the roof had already long since been shared on all sorts of social medias, so Chan had to go to a press conference and explain what had happened.
The fans – the real fans – we understanding, and horrified by what had happened. The group appreciated their support. The other "fans" blamed Felix for the trouble, many saying he should have died probably and saved everyone the trouble, but his mates were extremely careful in not letting him see those kind of messages.
(It definitely wouldn't help him recover from the incident, so they limited his access to all of his social medias.)
Even though the trio had been given time to help Felix recover, though, it was Hyunjin who was the most present. While Changbin developed a bit of an unhealthy obsession with his goal to find the culprit, Hyunjin had developed a form of separation anxiety of his own, and couldn't bear being away from his baby for extended periods of times.
So, it was Hyunjin who stuck by Felix's side the most. He was the best at calming him down when an attack occurred, and he also became the only one who could snap Felix out of one of his absence episodes when they happened. Changbin, on the other hand, was the only one who could reassure him when nightmares took over his sleep. He was the one Felix relied on the most during his physical rehabilitation. He became Felix's physical anchor, while Hyunjin was his emotional one.
It was a new balance, a new dynamic – but they made it work.
.
Hyunjin was lying in bed with Felix that morning, simply enjoying his warmth and his sweet scent, and relishing in the fact that he knew Felix to be safe when he was snuggled so cozily in his arms. It was in moments like these that Felix looked the most like the person he used to be – but of course, Hyunjin loved him all the same, broken pieces and all.
"Jinnie."
He looked up from his silent observations to find Changbin leaning against the doorway of their room, a grim but determined expression on his face. It took Hyunjin a few seconds to realize what was going on, and his breath stuttered a bit.
"You found him."
Changbin nodded stiffly. "I know who he is and where to find him."
"I don't want you to get hurt, Binnie. If we lose you—"
"This is for Felix," cut Changbin, gritting his teeth. "And you're not going to lose me – I'm going to kill this asshole and make it as painful as possible."
Hyunjin bit his lower lip. "And you're sure you're not gonna get in trouble?"
"Even if I get caught, I have the Right of Retribution. I might not be a pack leader, but an exception to the law can be made since it was our mate who was directly attacked, and I have Chan-hyung backing me. I've already checked everything – I won't get in trouble."
At that, Hyunjin was forced to admit defeat. While he understood the urge to kill the bastard, he'd much rather stay by Felix's side – but Changbin was obsessed with finding the culprit, terrified at the mere thought of him hurting their omega again.
The Right of Retribution was an old law which allowed a pack leader to answer to a provocation in any way he sees fit. It usually happened when a pack member was hurt and the system couldn't offer the justice they sought. In their case, Felix's assault most definitely warranted the use of that law. Not only had he been the victim of an Alpha Voice, but he also almost died as a direct result of it – it was basically a murder attempt, which definitely justified whatever fate Changbin had in store for him.
(Normally, the law would only allow Chan to act on it, seeing as he was their pack leader, but the situation was extreme enough for Changbin to slip through the loopholes.)
With a nod, he offered him a grim smile. "Make him pay."
"I will."
.
The alpha responsible was dead, and Changbin had made it painful.
When he returned home after abandoning the body in a random alley, covered in blood and his cheek bruising from the one punch his opponent had managed to lend before Changbin tore him to pieces, he found his two mates patiently waiting for him.
There was a moment of silence as the pair stared at him, and Changbin lowered his eyes, slightly ashamed they had to see him in such a state. But then, careful, hesitant footsteps echoed. Changbin's eyes widened when he saw Felix slowly, but surely making his way over to him. Hyunjin was right beside him to catch him if he fell, but Felix was walking on his own, and the sight brought him immense joy and pride.
When Felix finally reached him, he didn't say anything, of course. He simply wrapped shaky arms around Changbin, their bond thrumming with love and acceptance and gratefulness, and the alpha found himself relaxing, instantly hugging him back.
Things wouldn't get any easier for a while, still. Felix still had a long recovery period ahead of him and, though they hadn't outright talked about it, they all knew he could never be an Idol again. It was only one of the many hurdles they would have to face in the incoming future but, for now, they'd try and focus on the present.
As the alphas practically carried him back over to the couch so they could snuggle together (Changbin was still covered in drying blood, but they didn't care much at the moment, simply glad to all be together again), Felix found himself relaxing.
He might be hurting, he might be broken, and he might no longer be the happiest omega on Earth... but he was most definitely the most loved one, and that was enough for him.
