"Hey, Lix! Wanna hang out after practice later?"
"Sorry, I can't – I'm going out with my boyfriend."
There was a moment of heavy silence as, slowly, all of his friends registered what he had just said. Hyunjin's eyes had gone wide, much like everyone else's, but Felix was focused on the somber expression slowly taking over his beautiful face.
"What do you mean, your boyfriend?" asked Hyunjin, his voice strangely tight.
"Exactly that," shrugged Felix, ignoring the shiver that went down his spine as he met Hyunjin's dark gaze. "We're going on a date once my classes are over – he's even coming to pick me up."
"I didn't know you had a boyfriend, Lix," mused Chan.
"Me neither, and I'm your soulmate!" gasped Jisung, offended.
Felix didn't even spare either of them a glance, still too caught up in the shadows storming in Hyunjin's unnaturally cold eyes.
"... it's a fairly new development," he confirmed, finally averting his eyes to stare at his food instead. "We met a few weeks ago, hit it off... I like him a lot so, hopefully, it'll work out."
"Felix."
He startled a bit at the firmer tone Chan used, finally looking at his friend. "Y- yes?"
Chan stared at him for a moment, his expression unreadable, before smiling softly and reaching out to ruffle his hair.
"Just be careful, okay? We all know how easily you get attached – don't give your heart to that guy too fast, hm?"
Felix relaxed at that, refraining the urge to laugh. "Don't worry, hyung. I'll be careful – and we haven't known each other for that long just yet. I'll be fine."
Chan simply nodded, returning to his foot. "As long as you're happy, then."
A moment later, the rest of their friends finally got over their previous shock and started bugging him for more information about his mysterious boyfriend. As he tried to ward off all of their invasive questions and playful teasing, though, Felix couldn't help but notice how silent Hyunjin had become.
He was unhappy, that much was obvious, and the seed of doubt in Felix's mind became just a little bigger.
.
Hyunjin stuck to Felix's side like glue up until the boy managed to give his friend the slip right at the end of their shared dance class. He didn't waste any time in heading out and, as promised, the detective was waiting for him by the entrance of the campus.
"Detect—hyung!" He would have to get used to that. "You're here!"
Minho looked up from his phone and smiled. Felix was momentarily taken aback by how easygoing his expression was. He had grown used to his slightly harsh expressions but now, he appeared relaxed – and the smile lit up his face beautifully.
Nope, don't you start! This is all just pretend, don't get caught up in it!
But it was hard not to get caught up in it when Minho suddenly wrapped an arm around his waist and pulled him into a hug. At first a little stiff, Felix then hesitantly answered to the hug, aware that he had to play the part if he wanted this to work.
He's so warm...
So what if Felix was a little touch-starved? No one was there to call him out on it.
"How was your day?" asked casually Minho, pulling away from the hug but keeping his arm wrapped around Felix's waist.
The boy flushed slightly, but leaned into his side as they started walking. "Pretty good. I broke the news to my friends earlier."
"Really? How'd they take it?"
"Okay, I guess." Felix scrunched up his nose. "They were insufferable about it, teasing me and asking for pictures."
"Pictures, huh?"
Without warning, Minho stole the phone from Felix's pocket. The freckled boy spluttered a bit but, before he could ask him to give it back, the detective made them stop and lifted the phone to take a selfie together. Felix was a beet red by the time the man handed him his phone back with a smug smirk.
"There you go – feel free to post it on your social medias."
Felix couldn't help but wonder if it was truly appropriate, or even allowed, considering Minho's work. However, if they wanted their cover to work, he figured they would have to go all of the way – it would be too suspicious if Felix told his friends he had a boyfriend, but refused to share a single picture of him.
They started walking again, and Minho began asking questions about his life in Australia and his dance major. It was so simple and casual, Felix found himself relaxing. In the end, even if this was a fake relationship, there was nothing stopping the two of them from becoming actual friends, right?
.
It didn't take long for Minho and Felix to genuinely hit it off. Forgetting about the mild awkwardness of why they were hanging out with each other in the first place, they soon found out they had quite a lot in common, and truly began to relax and enjoy their time together.
A coffee date every three days turned into long walks in the park and dinner every evening, be it at a random restaurant or at Minho's place. They went out for ice cream, fed the ducks in the park, watched movies... Anything and everything an actual couple would do, they did.
Felix got completely caught up in it, and he didn't regret it one bit.
He liked Minho – liked liked him. He wasn't much older than him, seemingly a prodigy in his field, and he was funny. He loved his cats, drank his coffee black, and always used a really dark humor and a perfectly flat delivery that never failed to make Felix laugh.
He was beautiful, too. Passionate by his work. He looked downright hot whenever he was focused or serious, and seeing him in a blouse made Felix feel things. And the first time the Australian heard him laugh, he truly thought he had died and gone to heaven.
Minho... Minho was perfect. It was simply impossible not to actually fall in love with him and, once Felix came to terms with his true feelings, he made the decision that, once this was all over, he would ask Minho to be his real boyfriend.
.
"You will?"
"Hmm."
"You're sure about that?"
"Absolutely."
Chan was the only one who knew about Felix's actual relationship with Minho. He had found out by accident a few weeks back, stumbling upon the pair who were talking about the case at that very moment – and Chan was smart, so he had easily connected the dots when he heard Felix call Minho "detective".
He hadn't made a big deal out of it, thankfully enough. Well, he had freaked out upon learning Felix had a potential crazy stalker, of course, but he had taken the whole situation in stride and agreed to help them out however he could.
"Wow, you're really whipped," laughed his fellow Australian, flopping on the couch.
Felix pouted. "So what if I am? He's, like, perfect. How was I supposed to not fall for him?"
"Whatever you say, lover boy. Just don't go and get your heart broken."
Felix couldn't help but smile at the genuine concern in Chan's voice and, without warning, he jumped on the couch and laid down on his friend, who wheezed at the sudden added weight.
"Lix...!"
"Thanks for looking out for me, Chan," he murmured, wrapping his arms around his neck and hugging his friend tightly. "You're the best friend anyone could ever ask for."
At first surprised, Chan then hugged him back. "Of course, Pixie."
They stayed like that for a little while, Felix slightly dozing off as Chan mindlessly played with his hair and slightly massaged his scalp. Just as he was about to actually fall asleep, though, the door of the dorm suddenly swung open.
"Lix, you said we'd go out for lunch—oh."
Felix froze as Hyunjin stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes darkening in a familiar fashion as he took in the sight before him. The freckled boy only now noticed his current position – with his legs tangled up with Chan's and the way they were hugging each other, it could almost look as if they had just been making out.
"Hyunjin—"
"... I was coming to get you for lunch, but I can see you're occupied—"
"N- no!" Felix scrambled back to his feet, almost losing his balance. "It's- it's okay, I was about to call you! Come- come on, let's go!"
Quickly grabbing his jacket, his phone, and his wallet, Felix bid Chan goodbye before grabbing Hyunjin's hand and dragging him outside. His heart was beating fast, painfully aware of the cold eyes now digging into the back of his head.
"So... you and Chan?"
"N- no!" Felix turned around to face him, his eyes wide. "It wasn't like that! We were just hugging 'cause I was feeling a little down – I swear I wasn't cheating!"
Hyunjin's face was completely unreadable for a moment, before his expressionless mask broke into a small smile, and he gently patted Felix's head.
"Silly boy. I know you're not that kind of person. I was just teasing."
It certainly didn't feel like he had been, but Felix knew better than to mention it. Still, the feeling of unease only grew, so he started walking again, trying to put the entire incident behind them.
"I- I promised you lunch, right? Ah, let's go, then!"
With some luck, nothing bad would happen.
.
Felix had been heading for the cafeteria when he heard it – the whispers.
When he reached the table where they usually gathered, he could feel the heavy stares burning into him, and he noticed the somber looks on his friends' faces.
Everyone was there – everyone but Chan.
The feeling of unease that had been budding in his heart for days suddenly bloomed.
"Where's Chan?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper.
Jisung shot him a sad look, and Felix felt like dying.
.
"Why didn't you tell me all of this before!?"
"Because I didn't want to be right, damn it!"
Much to Felix's relief, Chan was still alive – greatly injured, currently comatose and stuck in the hospital, but still alive. One of the old, granite windowsills on the third floor had broken without warning, and the large piece of ornate rock had hit Chan right on the head, busting his skull open on the spot.
No one had been there to witness the incident – Chan's unconscious body had been found just in time by a group of juniors coming back from basketball practice, and the entire ordeal had been written off as an unfortunate accident.
But Felix knew better.
Hyunjin missed our dance class this morning.
Hyunjin's unexpected absence coincided too greatly with Chan's accident, and Felix could no longer ignore the reality of the situation. No matter how he looked at it, Hyunjin had had a hand in Chan's accident – and, most probably, all of the previous deaths, too.
Minho cursed under his breath, massaging his temples, and Felix looked down. He hadn't meant to hide his doubts for so long, but he simply hadn't been able to wrap his head around the fact that one of his best friends could have possibly... might have...
"I understand," finally said Minho, his anger deflating. "Even if it would have saved us a whole lot of trouble had you said something sooner."
Felix sunk in the couch even more, wanting nothing more than to disappear. Disappointing Minho of the sort left a bitter aftertaste in his mouth.
"Alright, let's get our heads in the game," then instructed the detective, falling serious. "Now that we have a suspect to focus on, we need to make him move. The only reason he hasn't gone after me yet is because I'm not a student – I'm not as easily set up for a fake accident."
"If that's the case, then what's your plan?" asked curiously Felix.
"Your stalker is obviously one to act on his emotions – and, if you're right about Hyunjin, then he's easily angered. We just need to make a move that'll provoke him so badly, he'll have no choice but to act rashly and thus make a mistake."
"What kind of move?"
"A literal one." Minho smirked a bit at that. "Move in with me."
"I—what!?"
"If you move in with me, you move out of campus. If you move out of campus, you become even less accessible for him, and that obviously won't sit well with him. It'll also show that we're serious about this relationship, which will make him feel threatened. And, lastly, having you live with me is the safest option for you at the moment. I have a feeling your stalker is becoming more irrational by the day, and I don't want you to get caught in the crossfire."
All of those arguments made sense, but Felix was still hesitant. Moving in with Minho was a pretty big deal, but how awkward would it be once he had to move out again, after the entire ordeal had been dealt with? No, before making such a big decision, he first needed to lay out his feelings clearly.
"Minho-hyung... what are we? Without the whole faked relationship, I mean."
The detective looked surprised for a moment. "Well. I'd like to think we're friends."
"And nothing more than that?"
Minho frowned a bit at that. "Felix, if you have something to say—"
"I like you, hyung. Really like you." Now that Felix had opened his mouth, he couldn't stop talking. "I know that everything we had was fake, I know it wasn't a real relationship and that we were just acting the part, but at some point it stopped being fake for me, at some point I stopped acting entirely. I like spending time with you, I like going on dates with you, I like when you hug me and I love hearing you laugh and—"
Without warning, Minho leaned over the small distance separating them and pressed his lips against Felix's. The freckled boy gasped, taken aback, and Minho instantly leaned in closer, taking his open mouth as an invitation – which it was, Felix simply hadn't entirely caught up with the situation yet. The moment he did, though, he started answering with no little amount of eagerness. A small moan escaped him as Minho's hand met his waist, squeezing it slightly, and the two eventually parted, panting hard.
"Hyung—"
"I like you too, Felix," murmured the man, his intense gaze making Felix gulp. "Have for a while – I was planning on confessing once this whole mess had been dealt with, but it looks like you beat me to the punch."
"So..." Felix slowly brought his arms up, wrapping them around his neck. "What- what does that make us, now...?"
"Actual boyfriends, if that's what you'd like."
Felix could only smile brightly at that. "I'd love it – and I'd love to move in with you, too." But then, his smile fell. "But- but what about Hyunjin? I- I don't want you to get hurt—"
Minho cut him off once again with a kiss – a softer one. "I'll be fine, love. I won't die that easily. We'll catch your stalker once and for all, and neither of us will be hurt, okay? But I'll need you to be careful around him – try to stick to your other friends if you can, but don't make it obvious that you're avoiding him."
Felix hummed in agreement, pulling Minho into a hug. The detective easily let him, snuggling up to the smaller boy under him.
"... on another note, will you come to my showcase in three weeks?"
He felt Minho smile against the skin of his neck. "Wouldn't miss it for the world."
.
Felix really should have seen it coming.
He knew Hyunjin had been pissed about him moving in with his boyfriend. He knew Hyunjin had been pissed when he stumbled upon them kissing. He knew Hyunjin had been pissed when Felix started no-so-subtly avoiding him, canceling their lunch dates and running out of dance class the moment the bell rang.
So really, it shouldn't have come as a surprise when an angry Hyunjin stormed over to him while he was prepping up backstage and started unceremoniously dragging him away. Everyone was too busy preparing the stages for the showcase, no one paid either of them any mind as they left the auditorium and found themselves outside.
Felix shivered a bit – he couldn't tell if it was from the cold or from the way Hyunjin had suddenly caged him against the wall.
"Hy- Hyunjin, what—"
"I love you, Felix. Go out with me."
Well. That certainly wasn't what Felix had been expecting. His fingers were itching to grab the phone in his back pocket to call Minho, but he could feel the way Hyunjin was taking every single movement in, just waiting for him to make a wrong move.
Still, in a last hope that his friend could be reasoned with – that he was not the killer, that he was not his crazy stalker – Felix gently shook his head.
"I'm sorry, Hyunjin. I love you like a friend, nothing more, and my boyfriend—"
Instantly, the dark-haired boy closed the distance between them and harshly crashed his lips on Felix's, his entire body pressing against the freckled boy's and pining him against the cold wall. Felix instantly tried to push him away, but his wrists were grabbed and harshly pined above his head. So, as a last resort, he harshly bit Hyunjin's lip. The taller boy instantly pulled away with a hiss, licking his lips as a drop of red trailed down his chin.
His eyes were darker and colder than Felix had ever seen before and, for the first time, he found himself being genuinely scared of his friend.
"Hyunjin, please—"
"I've had enough," growled Hyunjin. "I've had enough of people thinking they're good enough for you, I've had enough of your stupid, shitty boyfriend smearing his filth all over you, I've had enough of everyone touching what is mine and of you letting them—!"
"Hyunjin—!"
Felix tried to knee him, but their legs were too entangled for it to work. He realized too late that this sudden move had made his phone fall out of his pocket, and he distantly heard it hitting the ground. His wrists were released, but Hyunjin violently slammed him into the wall. Stars exploded before his eyes as pain flared in the back of his head, which started spinning. Stunned, he noticed too late how Hyunjin's hand had shifted – now closed tightly around his neck.
Too tightly.
"Hyun—jin...!"
"I've had enough, Felix...!" he cried out, tears streaming down his face, his eyes wide and unfocused as he tightened his hold around Felix's neck. "I can't take it anymore! I can't take you not being with me! I can't- I can't live without you, Lixie! I love you so much, so why- why can't you love me too!?" Felix was crying too, wheezing and weakly hitting Hyunjin's arms as his air intake was completely cut. "I don't want you to leave me, Lixie! This asshole doesn't deserve you, Chan doesn't deserve you, no one deserves you...!"
Felix couldn't breathe, feeling lightheaded as dark spots danced before his eyes. His best friend was currently strangling him while crying his eyes out, and he couldn't do anything to stop it, all strength having left his body.
Hyun... jin...
"I love you, Lixie. I love you, I love you, I love you...!" cried Hyunjin, his grip tightening even more, if possible. "Let's be together in our next life, okay? I love—"
There was a sickening crack and, all of sudden, the deadly pressure over Felix's neck vanished. Felix's body crumbled to the ground as he hacked and coughed, air finally filling his lungs again, and there was a distant 'THUD' just next to him.
It took his eyes a few moments to properly refocus and, though his sight was blurred by tears, he could distinctly make out Hyunjin's face right in front of him. The boy's eyes were wide and glassy, with red trailing down his forehead and his cheek—
Oh god.
The right half of his head had almost completely caved in, and more and more blood was pouring out of the wound. Felix felt sick, trying to push himself up with shaky arms as his foggy mind failed to emit a single coherent thought beyond I almost died and Hyunjin tried to kill me and Hyunjin is dead.
And then there were arms wrapped around him – strong, familiar arms.
"Shh, you're okay, Lix, everything is going to be okay. He won't hurt you ever again, I won't let him. You're safe, okay? I'll take care of you now."
Felix was still too weak to fight it as a wet rag was suddenly pushed over his nose and his mouth, forcing him to inhale its sweet-smelling scent. The freckled boy weakly trashed in the man's hold, but was quick to succumb to the effects of the somniferous drug, having already been on the verge of passing out.
The last thought that ran through his head was that whoever was holding him wasn't supposed to be there.
.
Chan heaved out a sigh as Felix's eyes fluttered shut. He almost didn't show up on time, but it was over now. With a disdainful look for Hyunjin's lifeless body, he rose back to his feet, an arm under Felix's knees and the other supporting his back.
Hyunjin had almost completely messed up his plan by freaking out and losing it like he did but, ultimately, the endgame was the same – he had gotten rid of a pawn no longer useful, and he had finally gotten his hands on the love of his life.
With a skip in his step, Chan carried Felix over to his car. Buckling him in, he then promptly got behind the wheel and pulled out of the parking lot. Just as he drove past the entrance of the auditorium, none other than Detective Lee – Felix's boyfriend – came out, and froze upon seeing them.
Chan sent him a cocky wave of the hand, and then promptly drove away, relishing in the look of anguish now taking over the detective's face.
Felix was his, and it was about damn time everyone knew it.
