"Where did I put it? Ugh..."
To say Felix was a bit of an airhead would be an understatement. It wasn't the first time he lost or misplaced something, and it certainly wouldn't be the last. Thankfully, he had a few good friends he could count on to keep him in line.
"Minho! Have you seen my knife anywhere?"
There was a loud meow from somewhere in the living room, and Felix was quick to follow the sound. He found Minho, his cat, lying lazily on top of the couch, his tail swinging around as he enjoyed the sunspot in which he was lying. As soon as Felix made his appearance, though, the black cat jumped down and started rubbing himself all over the boy's ankles, purring. Felix chuckled, scratching the cat under his chin for a bit. As soon as Minho got the amount of petting he wanted, he pulled away and quickly trotted over to the second window, jumping on the windowsill and—
"My knife!" gasped Felix, delighted. "You found it! I knew I could count on you!"
He didn't really remember putting his knife there but, then again, Felix was a forgetful person by nature. Glad to have finally found it, Felix promptly picked it up and tucked it away in his pocket before rubbing Minho's head affectionally.
Minho was his oldest friend and companion. He didn't know how old the cat was, but he did know he had to be pretty old, because Felix had taken him in after his previous owner, a very old woman, passed away.
(She'd stumbled upon his cottage in the woods one late evening, and Felix had immediately welcomed her inside, horrified at the mere thought of this frail lady spending the night outside. He'd given her warm clothes and blankets, along with as much food as he could spare, and even some medicine for her aching back.
Unfortunately, as talented a healer Felix was, he couldn't help someone dying of old age, and she'd passed away barely a few hours after he'd taken her in. She went peacefully, begging him to take care of Minho in her stead, and promising that his kindness would be rewarded accordingly – though he still had no clue of what she meant by that.)
Hence why Minho was with him now – had been for the last four years, actually.
"You're going to get extra treats for dinner tonight," he promised with a smile.
Minho simply purred again, obviously content with his reward, then jumped back on the floor to return to his sunspot... only to hiss as he found none other than Jeongin now occupying his spot.
The three-legged fox seemed to offer the cat a mocking grin, curling up into a ginger ball that seemed to absorb the warmth provided by the sunlight. He obviously had no intention of moving, he always enjoyed messing with everyone in the house. However, Felix felt a little bad since Minho had lost his spot because of him, so he decided to step in.
"Innie, come on, get up you lazy bum," urged Felix, carefully picking him up. The fox growled, displeased, but didn't try to fight out of his hold. "It's time for your daily exercises. Why don't we go do them outside, since the weather is so nice today?"
Jeongin instantly perked up at that, and Minho happily reclaimed his spot while the two of them left the living room. Taking the back door of Felix's little cottage, they found their way to the backyard, where the flower beds were filled to the brim with blossoming, colorful flowers, and the grass was rich and green. In the back was a weeping willow, with a large pond underneath it.
(The garden was, without a doubt, Felix's favorite part of the house. He didn't have to do much to keep it healthy, somehow, and being out there always brought him joy and a certain peace of mind.)
"Alright, there you go." Carefully, Felix placed Jeongin down in the grass. "Be careful, okay? Don't push yourself too hard."
It almost felt like Jeongin nodded before taking off, a tad wobbly because of his missing front leg, but much faster and more energetic than before. Felix simply sat down and watched as the ginger fox happily ran around, slowly but surely getting reaccustomed to moving around on his own – he was getting better by the day, much to Felix's relief.
(He'd found Jeongin barely a few months ago. The little fox had been caught in a trap some hunters had set up all over the forest, and Felix had been in the process of getting rid of them when he'd stumbled upon the injured animal, his front leg torn apart by a bear trap twice his size.
He hadn't been able to save his leg, the bone too damaged and the limb too mangled, with infection already settling in. After amputating it, however, the fox instantly started growing healthier, and it was only a few weeks since he'd started moving on his own again, though Felix always kept a close eye on him.)
After a few minutes of running around, the little fox returned to Felix's side, tired, but satisfied. He hopped onto Felix's lap, curling up and closing his eyes to get some rest. The freckled boy smiled endearingly, gently petting the fox's ears. It had taken him a while before he earned the full trust of Jeongin, and he was incredibly grateful that the fox had so much faith in him after what other humans put him through.
A familiar chattering noise echoed, and Felix looked up. He chuckled upon seeing none other than Jisung now eating his fill in the bird table, loudly arguing with the few nightingales and hummingbirds hovering around, clearly unhappy to find the squirrel stealing their food.
"Jisung," he called out, shaking his head fondly. "You know those are for the birds. Why are you so stubborn?"
The angry chattering died down as the squirrel quickly scaled down the wooden post, his cheeks filled with seeds, and he happily made his way to Felix. The freckled boy chuckled again as the squirrel rubbed his little head against his head before taking off in the opposite direction, going to put his food away in the rather large wooden box that served as his burrow.
(Jisung was the newest addition to their little group. Felix had accidentally found him while on one of his daily walks in the forest, curled up on the ground and suffering from a pretty bad case of hypothermia. He wasn't a ground squirrel but, for a reason Felix hadn't known at the time, Jisung wasn't able to scale trees or live in a drey like his peers.
Upon taking him home to take care of him, Felix quickly found out that Jisung was a very affectionate creature. He trusted easily and, now that Felix had taken him in, he didn't want to leave. When Felix had tried to set him up in a tree outside, however, he finally found the problem: Jisung was afraid of heights.
Felix had thus taken it upon himself to build him a small house on the ground, instead. It wasn't much, considering Felix's skills in carpentry were pretty much nonexistent, but Jisung seemed quite happy with his new house, nonetheless.)
While Felix lived alone, he had Minho, Jeongin, and now Jisung to keep him company. There was no denying that he'd felt quite lonely before taking the black cat in, but he wouldn't give up his peaceful life in the woods for anything in the world. Here, he was free to develop his healing craft, and he wasn't harassed by ill-intentioned people, so that was definitely a plus.
He'd stumbled upon the cottage while it was in a pretty bad shape, almost ten years earlier. He was still a child at the time, and he wasn't technically allowed to go into the woods – none of the children were, because it was said a portal to the fey realm was hidden there, and that the feyfolk kidnapped lost children and took them away forever. Felix had always been a curious child by nature, though, and the woods were always his best chance of escape whenever bullies got into their heads to chase him down.
Over the following years, since the cottage was abandoned, Felix simply decided to claim it for himself. Rarely anyone ever dared to venture this far into the woods, so it's not like anyone was going to bother him about it, and he spent many years renovating the entire place as best as he could.
It was now a beautiful, rather spacious cottage with a wonderful garden. Felix had never felt more at home than in those woods, and he made a point of walking through them every morning to appreciate the peace they brought him. It hadn't taken him long to find the best herbs for his medical research, along with some delicious mushrooms and other edible plants, but he was always careful not to consume in excess, and to always give back as much as he took.
(To this day, Felix couldn't say if the rumors of fey magic filling the woods were true or not. He'd never found anything to disapprove those rumors, and it did feel pretty magical at times, so Felix simply made it a point to be respectful. Even if he didn't entirely believe in those myths, one could never be too careful.)
All in all, Felix was quite happy with his life right now. Even if he often found himself missing physical contact – he was a natural cuddle bug – he wouldn't give up his hermit life in the woods for anything in the world. He was tired of dealing with hateful, degrading people who looked down on him just because of his appearance, and he simply wanted to live out the rest of his days in peace.
.
"He's perfect, Binnie~."
"That's the third time you've said that in the last five minutes."
"Because it's true!"
Changbin sighed, shaking his head as Hyunjin heaved out an enamored sigh, leaning a little more over the branch to get a closer look at the freckled boy below them. He was a little exasperated by his mate's longing for the human boy, mostly because Hyunjin was the one who insisted on not making actual contact with him.
Hyunjin and him were of the feyfolk. Hyunjin was a water fairy, while Changbin was a fire fairy. They made quite the unusual pair since, in terms of magic, they were the complete opposites, but they were truly made for each other – hence why they'd unified a little over two centuries ago, now.
But then, during one of their usual escapades in the woods where human and fey realm merged in a mess of magic and time warps, they'd stumbled upon a cottage – it was abandoned the last time they came around, maybe a decade ago or so, but it was now clearly occupied by someone.
No human would be stupid enough to settle down in the middle of the "Cursed Forest", or so they thought. After barely a few hours of careful observation, however, they quickly came to realize that such was the case: the young human boy really was that stupid.
They had spent the following days subtly following him around. They'd been worried he was one of those annoying fey hunters at first, but quickly came to realize that the boy had absolutely no clue of the magic clustered all over the forest. He came and went as he pleased, simply living his life without a care in the world.
He had a great respect for life of any form, they quickly noticed. He didn't eat meat like most humans did, and he grew his own food from the soil of his home. He sometimes ventured into the woods to gather herbs, mushrooms, and other goods, but he never took more than he needed too, and he was extremely careful harvesting everything.
And from there... from there, things went completely downhill.
Feyfolk didn't fall in love easily. Or, more accurately, it rarely happened. Falling in love was an instantaneous thing and, once it happened, there was no going back from it. The fae in love usually courted until their potential mate ended up returning their feelings and, if it truly didn't work out, then they usually died of a broken heart.
Changbin had fallen in love with Hyunjin the moment their eyes met, and he'd instantly jumped to courting him. Hyunjin had been a bit difficult about it, mostly because he was younger and didn't wish to be tied down by an everlasting union so soon in his life, but he'd quickly changed his mind after getting to know Changbin, and he finally fell in love with him too.
But now... now, the both of them had fallen in love with the human boy – and they fell hard. Not a day passed without them hiding in the weeping willow and observing him from afar, both immensely afraid of what their feelings implied.
Falling for a human was a complicated thing indeed. They didn't have the same concept of commitment feyfolk did, and their feelings were as fleeting as their mortal lives. If a fae happened to fall for a human, it usually ended with them being rejected and thus dying, or the human initially accepting them, but slowly growing to reject their different upbringing and culture – which, again, ended in the fairy's death.
So yeah. As smitten as Hyunjin and Changbin were with the human boy, they weren't exactly fans of the potential heartbreak it'd lead them to.
They could still save themselves. If they simply retreated to the fey realm and stayed there until the human boy passed away, then their intense feelings would eventually die down without taking the fairies with them. However, for some reason, neither Hyunjin or Changbin could bring themselves to do that.
They wanted the human boy – Felix was his name. They loved him dearly, and each day spent so close to him only strengthened their feelings for him. He was adorable, caring, kind, respectful, simply... simply perfect.
"I can't stand it anymore," groaned Hyunjin. "We need to talk to him!"
"Finally!" huffed Changbin, rolling his eyes a bit. "But we can't introduce ourselves as feyfolk right off the bat, or he'll freak."
"You want us to pass as humans?"
"It's the best way."
"Well, I guess so... We're going to need human clothes for that, though."
Changbin shrugged, rising to his feet as his wings fluttered behind him. "There's a human village not too far from here. We can easily get there, trade off some clothes, and then return tomorrow. We should get him a gift, too, since we're courting him."
"Oh, good idea!" beamed Hyunjin, also getting up.
The water fairy skipped over to his mate, grabbing his hand with a grin. Said grin fell a bit as he glanced back down, where Felix was now getting up to head back inside.
"... we're really doing this, aren't we?" he whispered.
"We can still back out if you're still unsure."
But the moment the words left Changbin's mouth, they both knew he was wrong. It was far too late to back out, they'd already fallen too far for Felix. So, determined to make this work, the pair exchanged a smile before taking off in a hurry, now eager to get started on courting the human boy.
.
Frantic knocking at his door woke Felix up quite abruptly. He was so startled, he failed to notice the sheet tangled with his legs and ended up falling face-first on the floor when he tried to get out of bed. Still, he quickly scrambled back to his feet and ran up to the door, where his late-night visitor was still knocking.
Upon opening the door, he was surprised to find a rather tall and very beautiful man. He had tears streaming down his face and strange, white tattoos all over his face, and his ears were long and pointy – definitely not human. Before he could say anything about it, however, Felix noticed that he was actually carrying another man on his back, and blood was dripping down on the porch.
"P- please, help us!" pleaded the man standing, his tears sparkling like jewels. "He- he's hurt, and I can't- I can't heal him—"
"Come on in," urged Felix, opening his door wide for them to pass through. "Lay him down on the couch, over there."
The man nodded firmly, quickly carrying his friend inside and laying him down as instructed. Felix closed the door and quickly fetched his medical kit before returning to the living room, where the blond man was now holding the other's hand, urging him to wake up with the most pitiful voice Felix had ever heard.
The other man didn't look any more human than the first one. Similar pointy ears, orange and red tattoos instead of white, and also strikingly beautiful. Still, now clearly wasn't the time for questions because he had a deep gash in his side and blood had yet to stop falling.
"What happened?" Felix simply asked, getting to work.
"We were- we were at the village trying to get clothes, but then- then one of the villagers recognized us and they- they chased us," sobbed the blond. "Binnie- Binnie got hurt protecting me, he was- he was hit with an iron bullet...!"
They're feyfolk, realized Felix, a little dazed. "O- okay. Is that why the blood won't stop?"
The blond man nodded, still crying, and Felix reported his attention to the injured fae. He was already pretty pale from the amount of blood he'd lost, his breathing was rather shallow, and his face was scrunched up in pain. Quickly cutting away the blood-soaked shirt with his silver knife, Felix started examining the wound more closely while applying pressure to slow the blood flow.
The bullet is still inside, he realized, gritting his teeth. But I can still save him.
"Take him to the table," instructed Felix, falling into healer mode. The crying fae looked up, startled, and the freckled boy offered him a reassuring smile. "I promise I'll do my best to save him, but I'm going to need your help. Can you do that for me?"
"R- right!"
"Good. Lay him down on the table and keep pressure on the wound."
The blond promptly picked up his friend while Felix went to fetch his tools. Quickly gathering everything he'd need from his lab, he then returned to the kitchen. Setting down everything, he washed his hands before finally returning to the injured fae's side.
Alright, let's do this!
.
It took Felix a few hours but, with the help of the other fairy – who introduced himself as Hyunjin, and his friend was Changbin – he eventually managed to take the bullet out, clean out the remnants of iron in the wound, and finally stitch him up. He'd still lost a lot of blood, however, so Felix and Hyunjin spent the entire night watching over him to ensure his vitals didn't drop.
A few hours later, however, Changbin didn't seem to get any better: he'd lost too much blood, and his life force had been depleted too greatly by the iron. Felix could tell he wasn't going to make it through the night, but one look at Hyunjin's devastated expression was the fairy realized the same thing was enough to make up his mind.
One of the many reasons why Felix had been shunned by others was because he was capable of... anormal things. It wasn't magic per se, but it was certainly inhuman: basically, Felix could transfer his life force to any living thing. It couldn't heal, but it could give back strength and energy and, in Changbin's case...
"Wait, Felix – what are you doing?"
"Saving him. Catch me if I fall, would you?"
Before Hyunjin could protest any further, Felix leaned down and pressed his lips to Changbin's. The drain was almost instantaneous, the fairy's weak body instantly taking whatever life force it needed to survive, and Felix didn't fight it, only wishing to save Changbin's life, and save Hyunjin from the sorrow of losing his friend.
It was the first time in years Felix used that ability on a living person, and it was definitely different from the one time he'd accidentally used it on a human. The drain was so intense, it barely took a few seconds for him to grow completely exhausted, but he forced himself to keep the connection, unwilling to pull away until he knew for certain Changbin would live.
Dark spots started dancing before his eyes as his body grew heavy and cold and, in the distance, a loud hiss echoed. He barely even noticed as something slammed into him, forcibly pulling him away from the fairy. He was too out of it at this point, muffled voices echoing as if his head was plunged underwater, his sight blurring...
Wait... Who's that...?
He could hardly see anything, but the mop of black hair looming over him was distinctly unfamiliar. He couldn't make out the face of the person now holding him, but he could tell they were... shouting...
"Felix!!!"
He closed his eyes. He was so tired...
He'd rest for now. He could deal with the stranger later.
