Chapter 5
Marjorie, or rather, Kat as Brian had chosen to call her since she could not remember her own name, watched from Logan’s porch as the wolves went about their daily business.
She did not understand how, but she knew exactly what they were, and after a few hours, even where they were. She knew the country she was in, could speak several languages fluently as she had discovered while Talia was browsing through channels on the TV. She even knew what a Tv was! She also perfectly understood most of the history of the world.
How could she know all these and know absolutely nothing about herself?! It annoyed and frustrated her, which was why she had decided to follow the wolves when they went to raid the next facility if they ever found it.
Vault of incomprehensible knowledge aside, something else had been bothering her. Whenever she closed her eyes, or went to sleep, ‘it’ was there waiting; a demon with white hair calling for her, and every time she responded the same way by driving a sword right through its chest. When she did, the noise and headaches stopped, but by the next night, they were back, and the voice only got stronger.
She needed something to take her mind off of everything, so she went for a light jog through the town. She caught a few curious glances from some kids who seemed to be on their way to school, but overall no one treated her like foreign object. She figured Brian must have omitted the state she was in when he found her to the rest of the clan.
Kat paused under a tree to do some stretches, but it soon turned to kata practice. This actually drew a small crowd of spectators that she was not aware of, drowned in the serenity of her meditation.
“Beautiful,” Talia whispered. She had heard the fuss while jogging nearby and went to see what the deal was. It was not clear what exact form she was practicing. Kat seemed to mix traditional karate, judo and several other practices with her very own style that seamlessly flowed out of her.
“Reminds you of Rex doesn’t it?” Brian observed next to her.
“Nope,” Talia rebuffed, “Her style’s much more beautiful,” she argued, as she recalled Rex with the chains. His fighting style, if it could even be called that was akin to a marauder ripping every thing around him. There was no beauty, just base animal instinct to survive and conquer. An instinct she could relate to quite well.
After a double roundhouse kick in the air, Kat finally brought the show to an end with a deep breath. When she opened her eyes, she was greeted by loud cheering that surprised and stunned her speechless.
“Impressive show,” Brian praised, as he walked up to her.
“How long have you been watching,” Kat whispered, as her cheeks turned red.
“Long enough,” Brian replied with a chuckle.
“Wha-”
Her outburst was cut short however by a man that ran through the spectators and grabbed Brian by the shoulder. He whispered something in Brian’s ear and that brought a frown to his face.
“You girls stay here,”Brian said to Talia and Kat and turned to leave but Kat grabbed his arm.
“You found something didn’t you?” she asked, though it was more of a statement than a question. “I’m coming,” she stated firmly, leaving no room for arguments.
“Fine...” Brian conceded. It was neither the time nor the place to argue. “...and I suppose you want to come too?”
Talia who had been listening with apt interest nodded sharply.
Realizing, it would be impossible to deter the two of them, he motioned for them to follow him.
They got in a nearby jeep and drove to the gate where Logan and a few other wolves were already waiting. The group got down and walked to meet the men upfront who were surrounding someone.
“What’s the deal?” Brian asked Logan as he walked up to him.
“See for yourself,” he replied.
Brian nudged his way through the men and saw a man in the middle clutching a briefcase tightly like his life depended on its contents. He was quite short, or that might have just have been because he was shivering with fright and fear makes any man smaller.
“What’s your name?”
“Griffin sir,” the man answered, “Dr Jacob Griffin.”
At this exact moment, Kat nudged through to get a better view. Once Griffin laid eyes on her, he dropped all pretenses of fear and stood up straight. “Marjorie. What a relief. You are unharmed. How are the dreams?”
Kat turned white and stepped back as fear gripped her. Something about the man terrified her and she fell to the ground screaming as the demon in her mind roared returned in full force and roared at her.
“Start talking,” Brian growled as he lifted Griffon by his collar.
“Let go you overgrown dog and we’ll talk,” the scientist replied with disdain, as he looked down the bridge of his nose at Brian.
“Brian,” Logan called with warning.
“Fine,” Brian said and let go, slightly satisfied by the pain in Griffon’s eye as he fell roughly to the ground and sat on his hand. He picked Kat up off the ground and carried her to the car, where he ordered a guy to take her back to Logan’s.
“I take it you are the pack leader?” Griffon addressed Logan as he stood up.
“My patience wears thin,” Logan said. “I know where you came from, so tell me why I’m not ripping you apart.”
“First off, without me that girl dies,” he informed Logan with a bravado that was honestly quite impressive for someone in his situation. “And if that does not appeal to your inner cub, I have information you so badly crave.”
“What would that be?” Logan inquired.
“Locations of all the Hunter research facilities in the great state of Texas,” he answered with grandiose, and a large confident grin.
Logan’s mind did a double-take, but his face revealed nothing of his surprise at the strangely opportune timing. “I can always torture it out of you,” he said instead, dead-pan.
“Sure, but six times out of ten, it’ll be a trap and you will lose plenty of men. Not good for a leadership as shaky as yours right now is it?”
“What makes you think my leadership is shaky?” Logan asked guardedly. Griffon did not just have the ball in his court, he was controlling the entire ballgame and Logan did not like it.
“Assume I know everything, and you will be spared a lot of shock in the future,” Griffon said. There was no stopping him now. His big mission to change the world had begun and a simple wolf did not scare him at all.
“What do you want?” Logan asked. For now he would play along. At least until they found a way to take the advantage back from him.
“The girl,” he answered. “She has a greater purpose than playing with dogs.”
Brian, who had been listening with clenched fists the entire time lost it and was about to attack when Logan suddenly reached out and grabbed Logan throat. His fingernails slowly extended and dug into the scientist’s neck who struggled futilely to free himself.
“You are alive because you have proven yourself useful,” he whispered threateningly into Griffon’s ear. “Insult my tribe again...” he continued as his nails sunk deeper into Griffon’s neck, “...and next time these go all the way through,” he finished and retracted his nails.
Logan let Griffon go and walked away, but paused and turned to the gasping scientist. “You cannot have Kat, but you are free to stay here under close guard, since you know so much about her.”
“Y-yes,” Griffon muttered, clutching his neck to stop the bleeding. Two wolves grabbed him roughly and carried him away, neither offering to help with the wound.
“You almost killed him,” Brian chided, as he and Logan walked back to his home.
“I wanted to,” the older wolf replied grimly. “But the pack comes first.”
“And that’s what separates you and I,” Brian said wistfully, “I would have killed him.”
“I suppose,” Logan agreed. A jeep with Griffon at the back still clutching his neck passed by them. The scientist was still terrified by what had just transpired. “We are going to be busy for a while,” Logan sighed.
“Yeah,” Brian laughed. “We have a few fights ahead of us. The pack’ll be overjoyed.”
“In the end, we are wolves at heart,” Logan mused.
“Exactly.”
