Writing lines.

“Hey Harry! Heard you had a detention too, what's Umbridge serving up?” Vega asked him cheerily. Harry gritted his teeth together as if determined.

“Lines.” he replied. Boring, effing lines.

As Shine sat down for dinner that day a heavy stone settled in the pit of her stomach. She had detention to attend to with that horrid pink woman. Shine sighed scooping some mashed potatoes to her mouth. Her left hand was swollen because of that punch to the wall. She hadn't worked at all in double Potions after that, requesting Snape to spare her just the one day.

Shine did go to Madam Pomfrey later though and she performed a healing spell. The pain disappeared and the swelling reduced like a deflated balloon. But Pomfrey advised her to be careful and not lift heavy stuff or use her wrist too much, for a day at least. Which included writing lines. Hopefully.

And that meant getting out of detention, somehow. Right? Apparently not, but then hope is everything. Philosophy! She couldn't be going so crazy as to be thinking philosophy in her head, right? But then you never know... she may be as insane as Umbridge pointed out. Hey! If she was insane she should be able to get out of the detention, what she said was a result was insanity, not meant to be said. Shine rolled her eyes at herself. That excuse sounded so lame even in her own head. And admitting you are insane to Dolores Umbridge meant a fixed bed for you in the mental magical maladies ward at Mungo's. Shine certainly didn't want one, at least this early.

The mental ward reminded her of the stalled research of Iris Drew. She never had a chance to experiment with chor blood. Shine knew he wanted to experimented with gausswelder fins too but she also knew he was too busy to actually try brewing a new remedy. Now that she had time on hand she should use it on this instead of wasting it on detentions with pinky.

Shine sighed her eyes going wide in sudden realisation. Maybe freaking her out enough would work. But then he had clearly warned her not to mess with the woman unnecessarily. But what bad was a minute prank, Shine had learnt enough Occlumency and Legilimency to put fake memories into people's heads. She could do that to Umbridge. Make her head buzz with wierd noises. Noises heard typically on London's busiest muggle street, magnified a hundred times, multiplied a hundred times in intensity. Even imagining it gave her a mini headache. Shine was sure it would blast the woman's head.

“C'mon Shine, we need to go to detention.” Terry nudged her. Shine took a look at the time. Ten minutes to seven.

“We better report early.” she mumbled picking up the goblet of water and draining it. “Let's go.” she said to Vega and Terry both waiting for her.

They walked up to Umbridge's office in silence. Actually Vega shouldn't have gotten any detention, she had done nothing. But Shine was sure the only reason of her being there was her being a Lupin, adopted or not didn't matter. And even when not adopted, she was a Black. Worse than any half-breed. Shine laughed humourlessly to herself, eliciting questioning looks from the other two. Shine shook her head and Terry knocked on the door, rolling his eyes at her.

“Come in.” a sugary voice called.

“Don't do that once inside or that woman will increase your detentions. We can't have that.” he warned her sternly

“Oh Terry! You are concerned for me. You are such a nice friend.” she whispered clutching her heart, then snickering. Terry cracked a smile then rolled his eyes.

“I am serious, love.”

“Good evening, students.” Umbridge greeted them drawing her attention. Shine's face turned into the very well practiced stone mask.

“Evening Professor Umbridge.” she replied looking around at her office. It was just as horrible as her. Flowery wallpaper, flowery, pink tablecloth, teacups, ornamental plates, vases upon vases of dried flowers, portraits of those foul kittens with the pink ribbons around their necks and the woman occupying it.

Shine looked at her yet again and noticed why she never saw her at first. She was yet again dressed in something so flowery and pink and furry that she blended well with the pink, flowers and kittens theme of her office despite being a toad.

“Well sit down.” she pointed at three chairs placed sufficiently apart with desks and a single parchment in front of them. The woman smiled brightly at them as if in encouragement. Shine shrugged and reached to the chair to the far left, farthest away from Umbridge's desk.

“Now you three will be doing lines for me. You three will be writing 'I will control my behaviour'.” she smiled at them. They began pulling out their own quills.

“Oh no, not that quill. You will use special quills, the three of you.” she said pulling out three blood red quills and handing one to Shine, the other two to Vega and Terry. Shine rolled her eyes and took it from her.

“There's no ink.” she complained. Terry looked up from his parchment and gasped, his eyes widening. Umbridge smiled once more, wider than before.

“You won't need any ink, Ms. Snape, dear.” she said her eyes actually crinkling up with genuine happiness. “Your wands if you please. Write as many times as it takes for the message to sink in.” All three of them handed over their wands. Shine was sure they felt as helpless as her. A shudder ran down her spine making her wonder what made this evil woman so happy but she just shrugged off the feeling. Maybe it was her imagination, maybe it was wrinkles and not crinkling of eyes.

I... will... control... my... behaviour.... Shine repeated in her head once, thinking it was not her but the woman that needed to do this. She put the quill to the paper and started writing, without any ink. Red words formed on the parchment, I will control my behaviour An odd scratching sensation began at the back of her wrist. It felt like someone was writing on her hand. She felt a sharp pain and she grit her teeth looking at it. On the back of her wrist, words had formed, the exact words that were on the parchment.

Shine looked at the other two to observe similar expressions. She could feel her anger boil over inside her. That evil hag. Shine clenched her fists, wishing them to be crushing her neck. Yet even as she stared at the shining, red cut it healed and the skin was left smoother, even if redder.

“Is there a problem?” her honeyed voice rang out. All three of them shook their heads no. “Then continue, please.” she smiled at them and they touched the sharp black quill yet again to the parchment and began writing. The words appeared and healed. This went on for hours while Umbridge watched for signs of weakness in her victims. Shine glanced at Vegs, she was surely having trouble. Her eyes were struggling to keep from pooling and Terry had a determined expression on his face.

They cut their own hands and kept sitting there, writing with their own blood for what seemed like hours. The skin had turned red and raw but the cut had healed yet again.

“Very well, come here, one by one. You first Mr. Higgs. The other two of you, keep writing, my dears.” she smiled at Shine and Vega making her blood boil. Vega whimpered and nodded mutely, continuing to write. Shine sighed and followed the example. She told Terry, it seemed like the message had sunk in deep enough, that he need not come back the next day. Next she called Shine ahead, who stood with the best puppy dog face she could muster up.

“I am sorry Professor. I should have kept my behaviour in check. I am sorry for being a lying, slightly insane, attention demanding person.” Shine said quietly so only the two of them could hear, sounding as polite and genuine as she could manage.

“Very well, Ms. Snape. I think the message has sunk in with you. You do not need to come back for the rest of the week. You may go now.” Umbridge smiled at her. Convincing enough, Shine thought picking up her wand from the desk and rushing out to find Terry waiting for her. He gave her a silent nod conveying his feelings. It was almost beyond curfew. Shine stood there for a minute before Vega emerged groaning. They started walking back to the dungeons.

“Am supposed to come back tomorrow yet again. What did the two of you do different?” she asked. “I stood there politely not saying anything. Just like you-”

“Actually, I apologised.” Shine and Terry blurted out together. Vega glared at them.

“How could you? We were right. I was right! I was telling her the bloody truth. You were telling her the truth too! How could you apologise Shine?” she shouted.

“I am not saying what I did was right, Vegs. I did what was needed.” Shine replied.

“Sometimes you have to do what will save your neck instead of just sticking to your darned principles. I say you apologise now, just get it over with.” Terry added.

“I will never apologise to her. I was telling her the truth.” Vega argued back.

“I don't care if or not you were right. Just apologise and put this behind you. Forget this ever happened. You don't need getting your hand cut open everyday, right?” Shine explained.

“That apart are you telling this to anyone?” Terry asked. Shine and Vega looked at each other. Vega shook her head no.

“That's what she wants. She wants us to complain and challenge her authority. She wants to make us cry and beg for her to stop.  We will not complain to anyone. I would rather endure the torture everyday.” she growled.

“I was thinking along the same lines, except the enduring part.” Terry muttered. They both looked at Shine. She looked from one to the other and shrugged.

“I guess I agree. Just let me arrange some Murtlap essence, first. This is stinging bad. If I manage to steal some from Dad, I won't utter a word.” she promised.

“That reminds me I need to do my Potions homework.” Vega groaned. “And that woman has drained me out. Oh I hate her so much!” Shine chuckled.

“Tomorrow am planning on holding the quidditch tryouts.” she told Terry.

“That's great. You already know your favourite chaser.” he grinned as they descended down the dungeons.

“Sure I do. Montague's going on the team for sure.” she replied grinning back making him snort. Vega chuckled

“I guess I will see you two later.” she waved them off at her father's office.
