Runaway
Mother was out for the night, so I made my way down to the kitchen. I was lucky this time. She actually fed me a 'dinner' of rice tonight. I didn't actually like the stuff, but it was better than nothing. I grabbed the leftovers and quickly packed them into a container, there was no telling when she'd be home tonight.
The door opened and something glass fell to the ground and shattered.
The first thing I did was run. I had been caught, no way around it now. I dashed up to my room and quickly grabbed my bag. I put in the rations I had saved from tonight's dinner. Heavy footsteps pounded up the stairs, and I could smell the sake from here. Tonight's the night I guess. I sighed and looked around the room, then, grabbing my favorite stuffed bear, I jumped out of the window to the ground.
My mother entered my room in a rage, busting the pathetic lock that I had clicked into place. "Keiko!" But I was already gone.

I took the route that I had run dozens of times in the daylight. It looked a lot more scary in the dark.
Soon enough, I was bathed in the light of a familiar porch, and I knew I shouldn't break in, but I didn't have the time to unlock the key. With that thought, I took down my hair pin and pushed it into the simple lock. With a slight pop, the lock gave and I was in. As I ran up the stairs to my grandmother's room, I grabbed the scissors, black hair dye, bought specially for this purpose, and the scroll that lay with them.
"Who's there?" Asked a gravelly voice from the hall.
"Just me Oba-chan." I quietly replied.
"You've decided then? Tonight is the night you head for the main land?" I nodded. "Alright, let's cut your hair, the dye will have to dry on the run, I'm guessing we don't have much time until she gets here." I nodded again.
We walked to the bathroom, but I was scared and antsy. "For heavens sake child, sit still or I'm going to cut your ear off. And not entirely on accident, if you keep this up," she chuckled.
Her laugh helped relax me a little. "I'm scared Oba-chan," I said in a small voice.
"The main land is a big place, you have every right to be. I have a few things for you to help though."
After cutting and dyeing my hair, she handed me a map, some money, and another mysterious scroll.
"Now, let me explain, the map is of the main land and how to get there, the money is for the boat you'll eventually need, and the scroll is to contact an old friend of mine. His name is Hiruzen Sarutobi," she smiled fondly at this, "and he should be able to help you find a new home. Just head to the Village Hidden in the Leaves and find him."
"Village Hidden in the Leaves?" I asked curiously. It sounds like a cool place.
"Alright."
Suddenly there was a pounding at the door. "You need to go Kei-chan, and be careful! Send me a letter once you make it to the Leaf Village!" I sprinted to the door, leaving my grandmother sweeping up bright red hair.
"Bye Oba-chan!" Black hair flying out behind me, pack stuffed with supplies, I ended one part of my life and began a new one.

What did you think? A little generic, but try and let it get off the ground in the next chapter.
