4 | In a Name

I sat idly and uncharacteristically silent, beginning to question if I had in fact led myself into the arms of a serial killer.

It wasn't actually like me to be so impulsive. I made the choice to listen to the notes of my mother. Knowing that she was actually my aunt made no difference as to how I viewed her. As far as I was concerned, she raised me- giving me the best life she could under the circumstances, and I would always view her as Mom.

And my respect for her was what led me down this path. For whatever reason I had yet to know, she wanted me here in Haven. And I wasn't going to let her down.

The scenery that came into view pulled me from my musings.

"What is this place?"

I wasn't expecting the man to answer, but I was struck with genuine curiosity.

It was like nothing I had seen before.

We'd been on a gravel road for the past fifteen minutes or so, before the denseness of the forest scattered to reveal forty, if not fifty or so cabins that were nestled in the green expanse.

"Is this a commune?!"

Was I some sort of human sacrifice?

I began to feel my heart beat a million miles an hour, the stupidity of my decisions sinking in. Why did I trust this man? What ever could have possibly possessed me to jump willingly into a car with a stranger whose name I didn't even know?

A stranger who was twice my height and width, and with the indecipherable personality to match.

I suddenly felt so exposed, and involuntarily gripped the door handle as if I was going to make a break for it despite the flawed logic of such a decision.

I felt sick.

He must have picked up on my nerves.

"No, this is no commune- this is Haven," he chuckled.

Sensing I was in no way reassured, he continued, "we are a tight knit community. We all look out for each other. And although we do not get strangers here, I am certain you will be welcomed, and will find the answers you are looking for."

His voice had a softness and steadiness to it that was reassuring. I felt like a yoyo. One moment I was unnerved by him, and the next I felt warmth spread throughout me as if under some kind of hypnotic spell.

All I could muster was a pitiful "okay".

It wasn't as if I didn't notice that all my bravado and sass had gone out the window. But this- this, was not what I was expecting. Perhaps I was naïve. I had pictured a quaint country town filled with coffee shops and idle gossip, where I would be the Zoe Hart of my own Bluebell. But this was no Bluebell. This was cabin after rustic cabin, and a larger timber building on the outskirts of which I couldn't guess the purpose. I could tell however, it was unlikely to be serving the pumpkin spice latte I so desperately craved.

But a few moments later, the man pulled into the driveway of one of the cabins, silently pulling the keys from the ignition before issuing his command.

"Wait here."

I don't know where he expected me to go, but alas I listened.

I watched him like a hawk as he waited, before a slightly younger woman greeted him as she closed her door behind her. Eyeing them both standing out the front, I tried not to appear like the voyeur that I was but her eyes fixated on me as she listened to his words, the words I desperately wished I could hear.

I imagined him saying, "this is Edie, possible bipolar, unhinged after her mother's death and making ramblings of needing to come to Haven. She is your problem now."

I watched as he shifted his weight between his feet. And although I could only see the back of him, it couldn't hide the way his back tensed, or how his hands ran through his hair in what appeared to be confoundment.

Perhaps I was reading things wrong.

Except, if those were the words he said, she didn't seem concerned. She seemed pensive. Because after what was only a few minutes later when the man had stopped talking, her head lowered as she offered me what appeared to be a knowing smile.

Shit just kept getting weirder by the moment.

But I guess what he said couldn't have been too bad because he marched towards the side of the car, and opened my door.

"Come."

He offered his hand to assist me down from the height of his truck, but remembering what happened last time I held it, I pulled away.

"It's okay, I got it. Thanks."

I avoided his gaze, but it was impossible to not notice his down cast expression turn stoic as he swallowed whatever reply he had considered sharing.

Grabbing my small bag of belongings, I followed him to greet the her.

Her hair was cut just above the shoulder. Blonde, wavy and flipped across in a side part that looked effortlessly chic.

She, was the girl from Full Moon. I remember seeing her when I walked up the front steps, her frame encased by a huge burly sort of man who I could only logically infer was her partner.

I wonder if he lives here with her?

As I made the realization, I wondered if she made the same connection to me.

Stepping out from behind the man, I raised my hand in a small wave. "Hi, I'm Edie."

"Edie. It is a pleasure to finally meet you." She paused before continuing, and then gestured to the man beside me. "I'm Sophia, Phelan's sister."

"Phelan," I tested the sound on my tongue before looking straight at him. "I've never heard that name before, what does it mean?"

The man coughed lightly, either selectively deaf or ignoring my question. "We need to get you out of the cold Edie. Sophia has offered her home to you while you stay in Haven. You will find her very kind and hospitable."

The way he said it made it seem he was some tour guide and this was his town. Unlike you, I thought, Phelan.

Giving a hopeful shrug of my shoulders I replied, "I won't trespass on your kindness for long Sophia, I will probably head back home once I get my car towed."

Swinging my bag over my shoulder, I walked to the doormat, wiping my boots of snow before stepping in.

I didn't get a chance to have a look inside, turning first to thank Phelan for helping me on my way.

Watching his Adam's apple bob as we stood face to face, I looked up and meet his stare. It locked me in place, my feet rooted to the floorboards beneath me.

"Thank you for putting up with me last night. I guess I'll see you around... but if I don't, thank you again."

"Of course. If you need anything, I'm the house on the hill."

Reaching forward, he put his hand on my shoulder as his goodbye. Little tingles erupted across my back, but this time I did not step away.

He did.

As he moved his hand into his jean pocket, I tried to pretend nothing was awry as the feeling slowly dissipated.

As Sophia and I watched him leave, I was compelled to step forward. Screw it, I thought.

It wasn't that he owed me anything, in fact it could have been said that the opposite were true. But, curiosity got the better of me.

"Hey! You never answered my question! What does it mean- your name?"

I was flabbergasted as he kept walking away. He didn't even turn around once.

But just as he stepped into his rusted old pick up truck, I could have sworn his eyes flickered shades of gold, that had I blinked in that moment, I would have missed.

It was then he decided to put me out of my misery.

"Wolf. My name means wolf."

And just like that, the engine roared as he tore from the house.

I however, was left standing on Sophia's porch with nothing... nothing but a bag full of clothes and a mind full of questions.
