Chapter 86: Promotion Exams

(Your POV)
Today was the day of the exam, and I was currently in a luxurious limousine traveling through the underworld, accompanied by Zenorse, Ophis, Rias' peerage, Ravel, Dagda, and Azazel. The only people from Rias' peerage that weren't here were Koneko and Gasper for some reason. I was curious as to where Gasper could have gone, but Gasper could handle himself...I hope. I was wearing my standard military uniform with my mask on my side while everyone else wore their school uniforms. We were going to an arena-like building in Glasya-Labolas territory, originally the exams were going to take place in Astaroth Territory, but Diodora gave house Astaroth a bad name due to him being...ya know...Diodora. Luckily, due to Ajuka being a part of the four satans, he was able to make sure House Astaroth didn't get punished too much for the actions of Diodora. On a side note, the windows of the limo were tinted so people couldn't look into it, because apparently I was a celebrity. I guess it makes sense, since THE Princess Rias of House Gremory and former fiancé of Riser Phenex is now dating a selkie. Plus Ophis is also the boss of terrorists, so we didn't want people to see inside the car she was in. "Dayum, so you built this thing yourself?" Zenorse was examining Junkyard Dog, or JYD as he liked to call it. "To be honest, this shield kind of reminds me of my wife."

"How so?" I don't see in any good way how a shield could remind him of his wife.

"It's strong, and very sexy." Zenorse laughed for a bit before handing me back Junkyard Dog. "So what happened to smol DIO?"

"Who?"

"Gasper."

"Oh Gasper went to a Fallen Angel institute to help work on improving his sacred gear." Azazel answered, and I was impressed. Back when I first met him, Gasper was scared of his own strength, now he is seeking to improve it.

"So what about Ophis' situation?" I asked while looking at the small girl in the corner of my eye, noticing how she was staring at me with familiarity. "Is she going to hide in the car the whole time?"

"No, once we drop you, Kiba, and Akeno off at the testing building, we'll park the car and head over to a hotel where Kuroka, Le Fay, Arthur, and Bikou are waiting." Rias explained. "Zenorse claims to have a disguise kit he will use on Ophis."

"I refuse to let that fish get close to me." Ophis pointed her small finger at Zenorse, who suddenly had a disguise kit in his hands.

"Girl, trust me I don't wanna get near you either for fear of the FBI knockin at my door." Zenorse's shot back. "Besides, Ophis is a child, if we record the four satans beating up a child, they'll get thrown out of office because of pressure from the press."

"No no he's got a point." Dagda was actually not drinking for once! Oh wait, no, he has a Jack Daniel's in his back pocket. "Like this is why you never see celebrities punch children."

After that, we continued riding through the underworld in our tinted windowed limousine until the car suddenly parked. I looked outside, and I saw a large building that looked like another massive arena. Man rating games are popular here aren't they? As we parked though, I noticed a couple walking past us. That's when I realized I never took Rias on a date, and my first date was with Akeno. I was about to put my mask on my face, but suddenly, Rias leaned over and kissed my cheek. "Think of that kiss as a good luck charm." Rias smiled, and I felt my face get warmer.

"Thank you, and while this is random, I was wondering if you'd like to go on a date with me after this." I offered, then I suddenly realized how stupid and random I sounded. "I-It's okay if you don-"

"I would love to go on a date with you, but let's do something you enjoy too, not just stuff I enjoy." Rias smiled while accepting my idea for a date. "I know you like to see me happy, but I want to do something with you that won't leave you confused."

"Thank you Rias, I love you."

"I love you too, (Y/N)."

The moment Kiba, Akeno, and I stepped out of the car, a magic circle appeared below us, it was a short range teleportation circle designed to limit paparazzi interaction. Could we have teleported from my house? No, because the magic circles aren't linked, not sure if that's how this works but whatever. A bright flash of light enveloped both of us before it died down to let us see. Apparently we were in a spacious room with marble white floors and white walls, above us were chandeliers made of mint green crystals. The size of the room was the same as a gym, and I suddenly noticed a couple of men in suits in front of us.

"Welcome, you three are servants of Rias Gremory, yes?" The man asked, and we nodded. "Good, would you three please show identification that you're servants of Rias Gremory in the first place?"

"Of course, here you are." Kiba pulled some papers from his shirt pocket, they were most likely paper stuff I didn't understand.

"Thank you." The security person thanked us for the papers before making us follow him through some large doors. "Now, as you three already know, this is the promotion test center in Glasya Labolas territory, the same territory where the great Falbium of the Four Satans lives."

Maybe I should not tell this man that Falbium is lazy as heck.

We followed the man until we arrived in what looked to be a lobby, all while the entire building was eerily quiet. I would have assumed this to be a trap, but I was able to read the amount of demonic power these guys had, and they were all almost human, plus there was almost no one here aside from us. The only other person here was some lady at the desk. "At the reception area, please take the documents and an admission ticket for the test." The guy in the suit instructed us. "After that, you guys should go upstairs where the written test is being held. Once you're done with that, we'll begin the second portion of the test, which is the practical exam. Also, all of you finished your reports, correct?"

"I wrote mine in Japanese because I couldn't understand devil, is that okay?" In my rush to learn new magic, I completely forgot to write my report in devil, so I wrote it in Japanese.

"I'm not paid enough to care, so as long as your report is in, I'm not picky." The man in suit held his hand out, and I handed him my paper. "Wow, your handwriting is terrible."

"To be fair, I've only started writing since I began school." I informed the man, who looked at me with a concerned expression. "So of course my handwriting is going to be bad."

"Well I wish you luck on the written exams then."

The man in the suit left after that, and Akeno walked towards the desk to grab the papers needed, leaving Kiba and I alone. He and I don't really talk much to one another, not like we hated each other or anything, we just don't interact much with one another. I thought for a moment before coming up with a topic for conversation. "So...there aren't many people taking the test these days, aren't there?"

"Oh, yeah there aren't." Kiba was confused as to why I was starting a conversation but rolled along with it anyway. "I don't think there are many opportunities for low class devils to be promoted anyways. We are lucky to be in Rias' peerage, because if not, we would have never been given these opportunities." The awkward silence enveloped both of us. "(Y/N), there's one thing I need to tell you before the test."

"What's that?"

"I'm glad I met you."

"Don't you have a crush on Nico, why are you hitting on me?" I asked the knight person, who let out a breath before laughing to himself.

"No no, as a friend, I'm glad that I got to meet you." Kiba waved his hands in front of him. "Well, other than the fact that you are the reason I met Nico in the first place, you showed me how I can improve."

"Um, you're welcome?" I shrugged, not really knowing how I helped this guy out. "Let's pass that test before we get all sentimental on each other."

"I have the papers." Akeno walked towards us with a thick stack of papers in her hands.

After taking a solid five minutes of filling out papers and turning them into the secretary, the three of us walked to a flight of marble stairs that were behind the secretary. I went up first out of protective habit, while my two friends followed me from behind. When we reached the second floor, I noticed how there were more people than downstairs, all of whom were now staring at the three of us. I guess we do attract attention everywhere we go don't we?

"Hey look, it's the holy sword user!" A female devil pointed at Kiba, and her male acquaintance looked at us. "I really want to ask him out, but he probably already has a girlfriend."

"Next to him is that Thunder Priestess, I would flirt with her...but I'm not going to risk getting sent through one hundred kilometers into the ground by the giant in front of her." The male acquaintance pointed out.

"You mean the King of Hope?" The female acquaintance pointed out. "Man, that name is getting old, we should probably come up with a new name. Who knows, it might make us famous on social media."

"Well we're background characters, we're probably going to be forgotten by the audience soon anyways."

"Wha-?"

I decided to tune out their conversation because it was irrelevant to me. We entered a room that could supposedly fit 100 people, but only 10 were here. The only ones that stood out to me was a small girl with red hair dressed up as a witch, trying to figure out where she was while a painter was painting some kind of kanji on the walls. Everyone agreed to politely ignore them because they looked insane. The room itself looked like one of those college classrooms designed to hold a lot of people. The three of us sat in a row towards the middle of the room. Magic circles appeared in front of us before a test appeared before us. In the front of the room was someone one who appeared to be the instructor. For the sake of knowing the rules, I took off my mask so I won't look up the answers on the devinet.

"It's time to begin the test." The instructor was clearly a no BS kind of person, I like them. "Please start."

(Timeskip, brought to you by Azazel singing a comically horrible parody of Stacy's Mom, but instead of Stacy he's saying Kunou while mopping the floor. Then Dagda throwing him into the ocean full force)

After the tests, I was pretty tired, especially since the subjects in hell are completely different from what I expected. Apparently I had to answer what villains were in Serafall's show, which of the four satans were what color of the Satan Rangers (Don't ask, I don't know either), how done was Ajuka done with everyone else's shit, how much alcohol does Dagda consume, and other questions associated with popular media, instead of magic theories and/or history. Good news though, Ravel joined the rest of us with handmade bento boxes for each of us. Though mine was clearly made with a different amount of love than the other's, given how mine had hearts in it.

"Thank you Ravel." The tests lasted a long time, so I was hungry and in need of something to eat. "I will try to pay you back as soon as I can."

"D-Don't worry about it, I'm your manager after all, taking care of you is my job." Ravel was in something called tsundere mode according to Azazel. "So how do you think you did on the tests?"

"Terrible." I answered with a gloomy aura surrounding me. "All of the answers were not things I studied for. I only passed because of those CD's Sirzechs sent me."

"That's what those were?" Kiba questioned. "I assumed that was just random junk mail all celebrities got?"

"Well either way, we have the practical exams next." Akeno pointed out while she gracefully bit into her apple. "So we should be fine."

"I agree, plus this won't be recorded, yes?" I asked, and Ravel nodded. "I never obtained the opportunity to use Regulus Nemea or the Boosted Gear in a fight."

"That's right, you can use any Longinus you can get your hands on, right?" Ravel appears to have forgotten this trait of mine, and I nodded. "Any idea as to why?"

"Beats me." I shrugged, I just accepted this fact as my life, maybe I can forge a magic link with Vali to allow me to use Divine Dividing. Preferably one that doesn't force Vali to be asleep.

"So how are you going to use Regulus Nemea?" Kiba questioned, and in response, I pulled out my phone and texted a certain heir of the Bael family. "Who are you texting?"

"Sairaorg."

Moments later, a Bael family magic circle appeared in front of me. From the magic circle, a lion in the shape of a human appeared before us. I texted Sairaorg if Regulus was available and willing to help me out. The magic circle disappeared and Regulus was alone wearing his usual mask. I don't know why Regulus was okay with helping me. "Hey (Y/N), we've never been properly introduced, but I'm Regulus, as you know." Regulus held out his hand to me.

"Hey Regulus, I know this is sudden, but you should probably turn into your axe form to prevent suspicion." I suggested the idea to the pawn as I shook his hand, who looked shocked, but nodded before he was enveloped in a golden glow before turning into a beautiful battle axe that was three meters tall. "Thank you, and sorry for the sudden order."

"It's understandable, since you don't want to cause a scandal or something like that." Regulus's voice could be heard from the axe while I grabbed it and carried it like a normal axe. Many people did stare, but they assumed it was another weapon like Hachiman or Genbu. "However...how did you know my base mode was an axe?"

"I...don't know actually..." I answered the lion, how did I know that? "Maybe Sairaorg used you like this?"

"That guy likes punching things, his axe skills suck." Regulus informed me, and suddenly Ddraig popped in.

"Oh hey Regulus, haven't seen you in forever, how have you been?" Ddraig's voice appeared in my head as Ravel, Kiba, Akeno, and I made our way to another flight of stairs.

"Okay what the fuck?"

"Hey, Regulus, language! We don't want Sealboi to curse!"

The four of us made our way up the stairs to see we were in a gymnasium-like area with people all around us, stretching to prepare for the practical exam. More examiners passed by us and handed us pins with numbers on them. They explained that they'll call our numbers up to face our opponent who will also be called up. The test is complicated in a way that closely examines how our fight goes in depth, checking to make sure it meets the criteria of heart, technique, and body. So even if someone were to lose, they could still possibly be promoted. Also, we will automatically lose if we kill our opponent on purpose, but if it's an accident, then the situation will get complicated. Another odd thing is that the numbers were called up in groups of 4, with two pairs fighting at the same time. I was handed the number 3, Kiba got 28, and Akeno got 32. After that, the examiners began calling up numbers.

"Would numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 come up to the center of the stadium." The announcer began, and I gave Regulus Nemea a few good test swings to see how well I can use the axe.

"Good luck (Y/N)." Akeno suddenly hugged me from behind before planting a kiss on my neck. "Remember, I won't be outdone by Rias~"

"Hey! Keep PDA under control, we don't want a scandal!" Ravel shouted, but her red face indicated she was jealous.

I walked to the center of the stadium, which had two large rings in the middle of it. The examiner in the middle of both of them assigned me the ring to my left. My opponent was a middle aged man wearing a dark blue tank top, gray pants, black shoes, with his long dark hair tied in a ponytail as his amber eyes glowed. As for me, I summoned the boosted gear on my left hand, I kind of wanted to try using Ddraig. "Hey, nice weapons, they kind of look like the Regulus Nemea and the Boosted Gear."

"(Y/N) is trying to recreate the Longinus!" Ravel covered my tracks by telling a lie for me, since she knows I can not lie. "Those are just artificial copies, so he's using this fight to test!"

"Gotcha, you ready to go big guy?" The man was stretching his arms, and I got into a stance.

"Ready."

The man suddenly started the fight by shooting three fireballs at me, and in response, I used Ddraig to boost my power continuously. Unfortunately, my experience with Ddraig is limited, so I can only use it's base abilities, meaning I can only double my power every five seconds. Wait a minute...Issei never told me how Ddraig worked, he just screamed 'boost'. How did I know Regulus Nemea was an axe, and how did I know Ddraig can only boost every ten seconds? Maybe I should ask Vali about this, and while I do know four Longinus users, Vali is the best option. Issei is in a coma, Sairaorg obtained his by meeting Regulsu and taming him, and Cao Cao is kind of my enemy, so if Vali is still my ally, he'd be the best person to ask. I created a golden force shield in front of me to block the bullets using the hand of Tyr. I rushed at the man with Regulus Nemea ready to slash from below, but the man jumped back with grace. I slammed my gauntlet covered fist against the ground, causing crimson energy to shoot out in front of me like a geyser. This caught the man off guard enough to leave an opening as he came down from the attack. My axe swing managed to send him flying, however he quickly caught himself by summoning his devil wings.

"Freezing Archaeopteryx!" The man activated his sacred gear, not surprising, since this man was most likely a reincarnated devil.

A large prehistoric bird made of ice appeared above the man, and it opened its mouth to send a massive breeze of frost towards me, so in response, I switched Regulus Nemea from my normal hand into my Boosted Gear hand. I boosted the power in Regulus Nemea, causing a golden aura to envelop the axe in a golden aura. I used this axe to swing at the ray of frost, causing it to get reflected back at the user. The man created a defense magic circle in front of him, which did manage to take the ray of frost, but I wonder how well it could take a strike from a boosted Regulus Nemea? That was the question on the man's mind as I rushed towards him with my axe raised before bringing it crashing down, causing the ground to split open from the impact alone. The man's magic circle shattered upon impact with the axe before I turned the axe onto it's flat side, allowing the man to take the hit without dying. The man was rendered unconscious, and I rested the pole part of Regulus Nemea on my shoulder.

"Nice job Regulus, it's been forever since we've fought together like this!" Ddraig's voice sounded excited.

"Yes, it's almost like they're using us again." Regulus' voice sounded suspicious and cautious about something. "(Y/N), have you ever heard of a woman named Alice, the Ultimate Storyteller?"

"I don't think I've ever met her." Weird, when Regulus mentioned her, I suddenly felt sad for some reason. "What kind of talent is the ultimate storyteller though?"

"I don't wanna hear that from the same guy who goes by the Ultimate Immortal."

(A/N: My name is Yoshikage Kira. I'm 33 years old. My house is in the northeast section of Morioh, where all the villas are, and I am not married. I work as an employee for the Kame Yu department stores, and I get home every day by 8 PM at the latest. I don't smoke, but I occasionally drink. I'm in bed by 11 PM, and make sure I get eight hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a glass of warm milk and doing about twenty minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there were no issues at my last check-up. I'm trying to explain that I'm a person who wishes to live a very quiet life. I take care not to trouble myself with any enemies, like winning and losing, that would cause me to lose sleep at night. That is how I deal with society, and I know that is what brings me happiness. Although, if I were to fight I wouldn't lose to anyone.
