Chapter 84: New Opportunity
(Your POV)
I woke up to the sound of arguing, not my favorite thing to wake up to. I sat up on my bed with my eyes still closed while I could hear Rias and Akeno arguing over something. I honestly thought Akeno was scolding Rias about something, but then I heard what they were arguing about. "Trying to give (Y/N) a morning kiss are you?" Rias was scolding Akeno with her arms crossed. "Well you're lucky I was spoiled by (Y/N) last night."
"Rias, we did nothing but lie in bed and watch anime on your laptop last night..." I recalled the events of last night, which consisted of me and Rias lying in bed with the covers on top of us, with a laptop on my lap while Rias held me and my body pillow by myself, while I held her and my seal plushie.
"Yeah but I got to spend it with you, and considering how you're my favorite person in the world, it was pretty much pure bliss doing my favorite thing with my favorite person." Rias pointed a finger at me, and since I'm still not good at taking compliments, I blushed and covered my face with my hands. "Still, his lips belong to me Akeno!"
"My my, quite possessive of him aren't you?" Akeno sat on the bed beside me before she suddenly began clinging to me as she blew into my ear. "I wonder what would happen if I let him let his guard down...maybe I'll eat him right up."
"Akeno, he said he'll only do lewd things with the person he marries." Rias pried Akeno off of me, which I was grateful for. "Please respect his space, he respects ours."
"I know I know, I'm just teasing." Akeno giggled. "I wanted to see how protective you were of him, Rias."
"Well-" Rias suddenly got a phone call, and the two of us looked at the screen and saw that it was Srizechs. "I'll be right back." Rias kissed my cheek before exiting the room.
"You know (Y/N), you've helped Rias in more ways than one." Akeno pointed out as the door to my bedroom closed. "Rias has been feeling down, but whenever you're around her, her mood instantly brightens up."
"Why is Rias feeling down?" I wondered, I wanted to help my girlfriend, so she could be happy.
"In your fight against Sairaorg, she felt useless, especially since you were forced to use a Phoenix Tear for her." Akeno went on while leaning on my shoulder. "She felt like a burden, and the fact she lost to a pawn doesn't help her."
"That pawn was the Regulus Nemea, a sacred gear that is basically immune to magic, Rias was out of her element." I knew Rias wasn't weak. "Plus she came up with those strategies."
"You wouldn't know this because you never use social media, but critics are saying Seekvaira and Sona's rating game was the real rating game while ours was a mess." Akeno noticed me looking at Hachiman, which was lying against the wall of my room. "(Y/N), you can't attack the news stations and influencers, you don't know where they live."
"Rias is too embarrassed to say it, but she wants to do this on her own, and she's hoping you'd be supporting her." Akeno pointed out. "Another thing she's been doing is contacting her brother to learn more about her power of destruction."
"I've watched some clips of Sirzechs rating games that Grayfia sent me, and I noticed how Rias and Sirzechs use it differently." I pointed out, and Akeno seemed concerned when I mentioned the fact I have Grayfia's number. "Before any misconceptions can begin, you can feel free to look through my phone at any given moment, I have nothing to hide."
"Is that so~?" Akeno asked and without a moment of hesitation, I handed her my phone and she began scrolling through it. "...You know, I was half expecting your conversations with Grayfia to be somewhat interesting, but instead I'm only seeing new cleaning techniques, pictures from the flower gardens, and you two exchanging pictures of your guy's cooking."
"I like flowers."
After that, I smelled waffles, so I figured it was breakfast time. I got out of bed and exited my room with Akeno following behind me. Rias finished her call and joined me whilst holding my hand. We entered the dining room to see everyone was already here. The only people who weren't here were Gasper, Koneko, and Onihime, but the sound of stuff exploding told me they were at the beach, training or something. The person who was making breakfast was my father, Asger, who was wearing a frilly pink apron and making waffles using the mighty tool known as the waffle iron. Natalia was at the head of the table, doing some paperwork while drinking coffee. I assumed it was law stuff since she's a lawyer, but then I noticed Asger's name was on quite a few of them.
"Are these...marriage papers?" I wondered out loud, and something told me Natalia didn't notice me because she suddenly flinched.
"(Y/N), stop being a ninja, it's Friday." Natalia doesn't like being scared, so she sounded slightly harsh. "Also, yeah, Asger and I are getting married next month. I've been saving up, so the wedding should be affordable now."
"Natalia, you do realize your son has the Four Satans, the Archangel Michael, multiple rich devil families, several gods, and myself on speedial right?" Azazel sat out of throwing distance of Natalia. "If you ask, these guys will probably set up everything themselves if you invite them."
"Well I was planning on inviting my friends anyways!" Natalia huffed while crossing her arms.
"Natalia, name at least one friend you have." Azazel ordered, and Natalia stopped for a moment.
"Ravel, do you need help making Gasper's lunch?" Natalia quickly changed the subject, not wanting to go over how many friends she has.
"Speaking of the vampire, where is he?" Dagda wondered as he swallowed a waffle whole.
"He's training with Onihime to unlock his balance breaker and maintain it." Yasaka answered while she sipped on some tea. "Due to Onihime being the Ultimate Daredevil, she's putting herself into various dangerous situations, and Gasper has to save her by freezing time and rescuing her. If things go wrong, Onihime has proven she can get out of things herself, so she shouldn't be too hurt."
"Good morning everyone..." Koneko walked out from the hallway with a red face, but not in the blushing kind of way, but in the sick kind of way.
"Koneko, are you alright?" I wondered as I walked towards the girl before placing my palm on her forehead, and she was burning up. "You have a fever, so I think you're sick."
"...It's nothing." Koneko avoided eye contact with me and gently pushed my hand away, and I had no choice but to respect her wishes.
"Koneko, if you're feeling sick I can make some special Apple Sorbet for you." Ravel offered while she wore a hot pink apron with gemstones on it. "The apples are from Phenex Territory, so they should help."
"....I don't want YOUR help." Koneko obviously doesn't like Ravel for some reason, I could never figure out why though. Even with my detective skills.
"Changing the subject from the cat fight going on, (Y/N), when are you gonna give Asger and I some grandkids?" Natalia asked, and I began sweating nervously. "Those are the kinds of questions you're gonna be asked at the wedding, cause I'm inviting my parents."
"Oh no."
"Grandchild....happiness..."
(Timeskip, brought to you by Onihime riding a motorcycle over a fire pit, and Gasper freezing her midair)
In the ORC clubroom, I was tinkering with some arcane bear traps that release a small nova of elemental energy when they're activated. The affected area is only a foot radius, but if someone was trapped in this, they'd have no way of dodging. Sitting beside me was Grayfia, who was reading a manual I made on how to make magic traps. Sitting on my other side was Rias, who was talking to her brother, Sirzechs and Azazel. Everyone else was scattered across the room, with Koneko still not looking her best. "(Y/N) (L/N), Akeno Himejima, Yuto Kiba, it has been decided by the council and Four Satans that the three of you will take the promotion test to promote from low class devils to middle class devils."
"Hold on, you have been doing all of this while you were a low class devil?" Connla asked from behind me, and I nodded. "Wow, now I'm slightly embarrassed by how hard I lost to you."
"In your defense, it's a label that has to be changed manually, and these three alone have the potential to be high class devils." Sirzechs informed the shadow user. "Well (Y/N)'s demonic power is close to a low class devil..."
"But he took down Sairaorg...?"
"(Y/N)'s abilities are magic and skill, not demonic power." Azazel sipped some sake from a glass. "Demonic power and magic are different because demonic power belongs to only devils and is in the form of abilities like the power of destruction. As for magic, anyone can learn them with enough patience. To be honest, if he were a human, almost nothing would be different. Only difference is a slight drop in strength, though being a devil of Rias Gremory and the Red Dragon Emperor did come with some bonuses, all of which allowed him to gather attention.'
"As we were saying earlier, Serafall and I wanted you three to become high class devils, Falbium was on board with (Y/N) becoming a high class devil so he could replace his military position, but the court wanted this to be fair." Sirzechs let out a breath. "Though to be honest, you guys fighting the Khaos Brigade on multiple occasions and defeating Loki puts you guys above most high class devils, but politics are politics."
"Congratulations Kiba, Akeno, (Y/N), I'm so lucky to have you three by my side." Rias seemed happy, and if she was happy, I was happy. Rias then leaned on my shoulder and intertwined her fingers with my own. I noticed how thin her fingers were compared to mine.
"Congratulations you three!" Asia hugged me in a joyous manner, forcing me to stop working on the bear trap.
"Good job you three, I'm proud to call you guys my comrades." Xenovia let out a small smile.
"Nice job you guys, I'll call up a pizza tonight." Irina excitedly pumped her fists into the air, and she had me at pizza. I like food.
"My senpais are so cool!" Gasper was sitting on Onihime's lap as the tanned girl rubbed his hair.
"Boy I literally jumped over sharks for you, show some appreciation." Onihime joked while poking Gasper, causing the vampire to giggle a bit.
"This team has officially become a group that Riser's peerage can't even hold a candle to." Ravel pointed out from behind me. "Even though you guys beat him rather easily, it's worth noting that he's still a top player in rating games, so his pieces are nothing to laugh at."
"But I beat most of them up using nothing but Genbu and my M1 Garand..." I sweatdropped, maybe making Rias the champion of rating games would be easy.
"I accept this as the Queen of Rias Gremory, I am thankful for this opportunity." Akeno, who was pouring tea, stopped pouring the tea slightly.
"Thank you guys so much for the promotion, but is it possible for this to wait?" Kiba was anxious, not surprising, given how he's been focusing on finding a certain someone. "I've got a lot on my plate right now."
"Kiba, you can take a break." I informed the knight piece. "I have agents all over the world, and I'm still adding more pieces. I ordered all of them to let me know if they hear anything about Nico should she show up in their regions. Blackbeard is scouring the oceans, and I even have Yozakura on the case. With her, there's nothing that could remain hidden."
"I know, I just want to know why she left in the first place..." Kiba sighed while combining his fingers through his hair. "All I remember is that she began crying after she watched me collapse...then she started...changing."
"Changing the subject from Kiba's Romeo and Juliet case, (Y/N), do you accept this?" Azazel asked, and I nodded excitedly.
"I accept this offer with my heart and soul." I accepted the opportunity, since working my way up the hierarchy ensures that I still have the support of the people. "If it means helping Ri-I mean Lady Rias' goals, I'll do what I can."
"No need to be so formal with me (Y/N), I'm not gonna kill you for being unworthy of Rias or anything." Sirzechs laughed while waving his hand. "Besides, it was already pretty obvious you're a good guy when we first met, so you can feel free to call me Brother in Law."
"B-Brother!" Rias shouted in an embarrassed tone, and in response, Sirzechs laughed a bit.
"Sirzechs, as much as I like the idea of (Y/N) calling me Big Sister or Sister in Law, please stay focused." Grayfia got Sirzechs back on track. "They should know how the promotion tests work."
"Oh yes, the promotion test requires a report on why you would like to become a middle class devil, a written test, and a practical exam." Sirzechs informed us. "You guys already have the practical exam down, especially (Y/N), so you guys just need to do the written stuff. Just so we're clear, you guys can write the report whenever, but the promotion tests will officially take place next week in the underworld."
"Next week...that's around midterms, correct?" Connla questioned, before focusing on me. "So what does the Talented Course do for midterms?"
"Other than papers like everyone else, we show off what we've learned from our talents." I explained. "Due to my talent, I'll be dueling against Mukuro, Kenshiro, the Madarai Brothers, and Madison in a kind of free for all fight, with the Madarai brothers having a massive numbers advantage."
"How many brothers are there?"
"They're identical octuplets."
"Their poor mother."
"(Y/N), you're a smart kid, but just so we're on the safe side, you should probably study devil history, philosophy, politics, and magical science." Azazel recommended studying more, and I noticed a sly smile on Akeno's face.
"Understood, I once again thank you for this opportunity." I thanked the man before noticing Rossweisse was heading out of the clubroom. "Rossweisse, are you heading somewhere?"
"Yeah, sorry I didn't let you know, but I'm going to Northern Europe to work on my defensive magic with a Valkyrie I've trained under." Rossweisse explained as I got up from my chair and walked towards her.
"Take all the time you need, but good luck." I walked towards Rossweisse and hugged her, since I heard that hugging people before they left was customary.
"T-Thank you (Y-Y/N)." Rossweisse turned bright red, wore a bright yet confused smile, and was stuttering. "I-I'll become s-stronger s-so I c-can be a piece you can b-be proud of."
"You're already a card I'm proud of." I broke the hug, and I could have sworn I saw steam blowing out of her ears.
"T-Thank you." Rossweisse suddenly looked super embarrassed before she rushed out of the room. "Gotta go, I don't want to miss my fight!"
"She does realize we have teleportation circles, right?" Connla pointed to the closing doors just as they closed. "They're also free, so taking a flight to Europe seems like a bad financial choice."
"Anyhow, Ravel, have you thought about what I talked to you about?" Sirzechs questioned the blonde Phenex, who nodded. "Good. (Y/N), you're quite popular in the supernatural world. Normally, Grayfia would handle everything for the Gremory's, but even the magnificent Grayfia can be overwhelmed, surprising I know, so I offered Ravel the position of his manager to help him out."
"I only accepted because I want to pull my own weight around here, and also because (Y/N) probably doesn't know how to do paperwork." Ravel pointed out, and that last part was true, I had no clue how to do paperwork.
"Ooohhh, Koneko, if you're not careful, Ravel will take your beloved senpai away from you." Azazel jokes, but the girl didn't even react, which was concerning.
"(Y/N), I have some papers to deliver to Sona, could you take them to Sona's office please?" Rias asked me, and I nodded to show I'll do this task. "Thank you (Y/N)."
Rias handed me the papers in a neat folder, and I left the old school building to make my way over to the student council room. I thought back to how Kiba behaved, and I felt bad about him. There was actually something I could do to help him quickly. Well, more specifically, there was an item I could use to help him. I walked farther away from the building before outstretching my hand so my palm was facing away from me. "Come to me, Minerva." I called out to the third relic Vagus gave me. A sleek black book that could easily fit in someone's pocket rammed itself into my hand at full speed, on the cover it said 'Alexandria Eternal' in gold and old English font. Minerva was a relic like Hachiman and Genbu, the only difference is that Minerva isn't suited for combat. Allegedly, it's a book that allows me to learn everything about someone by providing me information on their life, soulmates, teachers, enemies, family, and so on. I could have used it to find Nico's location, but there was one problem..."Show me Nico's location."
I don't know how to use it.
Instead of Nico's location, all I got was the information of some kid named Nico Di Angelo, and the worst part, THE ENTIRE BOOK WAS IN ANCIENT GREEK. In response to my frustration, I threw the book on the ground, only for it to bounce up from the ground like it was made of rubber, striking me in the forehead. This is also one of those relics that confirms my theory of these things being alive, because it has a personality, a sassy one at that. "Senpai, are you okay?!" A brown haired girl suddenly ran up to me, and I recognized her as the second bishop of Sona's, Reya Kusaka. "I've never seen you mad like that!"
"Oh, Reya, my apologies you had to see that." I was told by Sirzechs that people get scared when I get angry, so I tend to apologize whenever someone sees me angry or such. "I was just frustrated with this book here."
"I take it the book is a magic book?" Reya wondered, and I nodded to confirm this. "Give it time, these kinds of things will get better eventually." Reya suddenly noticed the folder in my hand. "Are those for the student council?"
"Yeah, Rias wanted me to deliver some papers to Sona." I held up the papers as I continued walking to the student council room.
"I'll come with you, I'm heading there anyway." Reya offered, and I accepted because company is always allowed in my book.
Reya and I both made our way to the student council room, and luckily there weren't many people in the halls today, because normally I'd be bombarded with questions about my relationship with Rias. Everyone was preparing for the midterm exams, which means studying and practicing. The two of us kept on walking until we reached the door to the student council room, and there I noticed Sona was about to walk out, surprised to see me and Reya here.
"Hello (Y/N), I was just about to head to the ORC clubroom." Sona noticed the files I was holding. "Ah, you already have the files, come with me (Y/N)."
"Okay, bye Reya." I waved goodbye to the brown haired bishop as I followed Sona into the student council room. I followed Sona into her office, where she closed the door. Ah, this is what people call a red flag.
"I heard that you confessed to Rias." Sona sat on her desk after taking the files from my hand. "She and I have been friends since we were young, and lately, she has been bragging about you ever since you two started dating. From what I've seen you can do everything I couldn't do for Rias."
"Huh, what do you mean?" I wondered out loud, and Sona began explaining what she meant.
"The engagement Riser, helping her peerage accept who they are, being Rias' rock when she needs someone to vent to, you've done all of these for absolutely no reason." Sona took off her glasses and began cleaning them with a cloth. "As for me, I was never able to help her. Just because I "was a high class devil" and "because it's her duty". I was never able to do anything for the sake of my family, yet you came along and pretty much shot every problem that presented itself in front of Rias."
"I apologize for none of those, except to Riser's peerage. I apologize to them."
"You solved everything without worrying about a single thing, you didn't even care about how people looked at you. Did you?" Sona asked, and I shook my head no. Who gives a heck about what people think of me? Me is me! "I'm happy about that fact about you, but at the same time, slightly jealous of you for it. You can solve every problem that I cannot. I give you my gratitude (Y/N). Thank you for saving Rias. Please take care of her, sure she can be stubborn and short tempered, but she is the most delicate person I know, so she needs someone to support her."
"I will be more than happy to be that person, since Rias is a nice person, so I'll do my best." I let out a determined huff, causing Sona to giggle a bit to herself.
"Who gave you permission to be this adorable?"
"I am NOT cute."
(A/N: So...I'm thinking about making this a multi work series, meaning this series will probably be split into two books. I wanna reach chapter 100, so we won't be changing books until then. I'll announce it, but I'm telling you guys now so I can come up with a new cover and name. For the record, I am very tempted to call it Shield of the Waves 2: Electric Boogaloo. The reason for the sudden split into 2 books is because the DxD light novels are hella long and hella plentiful, so there's a lot of content I need to cover here.
