Chapter 78: Arrival of a Phoenix, Reaper, and Problems

(Your POV)
I was currently at school, wearing my selkie's coat around my waist, except it looked like my old parka now thanks to Rossweisse teaching me her cloth-changing magic. Other than that, I wore my usual long sleeved school shirt with the sleeves rolled up to reveal my forearms, along with the uniform pants, belt, and shoes. I was on my way to the first year's classroom to check up on Ravel, since she arrived this morning, yet I didn't get to see her because I was busy helping Onihime build a new ramp. I was heading to the first year classroom alone, and I checked my watch, noticing that right now was around the time that the first year classes got out. I suddenly noticed that Rias was here as well, so I walked over to her to say hello. "Hello Rias, I take it you came here to visit Ravel as well?"

"Yes I am, and I'm guessing you came here for the same reason?" Rias guessed, and I nodded to confirm this answer. "How about we walk together, to keep eachother company?"

"Sounds good to me."

As we walked, we didn't talk much because I was still somewhat tired from training, and Rias was thinking about what to do with the old school building. Unfortunately, many of the people that saw us walking together started commenting on us. I was thankful I wasn't as attractive as Kiba, but that doesn't mean most of the girls don't like me. Given how I was excessively helpful and often helped with stuff, such as repairing lockers, filling in holes in the wall, or even installing AC units. They saw me as the 'protect and care' while Kiba is the 'nut and go'.

"There go (Y/N) and Rias, I wonder if they're dating." One of the girls started a conversation with her friends. "I see them around quite a bit."

"Really? I thought Asia and (Y/N) were dating, is (Y/N) two timing?" A second girl questioned, and I began getting nervous that a misunderstanding was about to spread.

"Or maybe (Y/N) is in a polynamurous relationship with Asia and Rias." The third girl guessed, and I had no idea what that word meant, it was too long. "I think (Y/N) is capable of making those two happy."

"If he ends up marrying both of them, he would make a good dad." The fourth girl pointed out. "But if either of them hurts him we're throwing hands."

"Fair point."

"I can't tell if they like you or are just protective of you." Rias pointed out as we continued walking down the hall. "You've become quite the talk around the school, becoming the 'male version of Hitomi Chan', which I think is fairly accurate."

"Hitomi Chan?" I had no idea who that was, but Rias most likely does because she knows more about manga than I do.

"Yeah, she's a girl who is pretty tall, eats a lot, is muscular, and is often associated with a shark, even though you're more likely to be associated with a seal." Rias pointed out as we began reaching the entrance to the first year classroom. "I hope Ravel didn't bring Riser along."

"Don't worry, by now, all of us surpass his power, plus, I heard he is scared of me for some reason." I scratched my cheek, and I heard about that through the Devinet and Kingstagram.

"Oh yeah, he has PTSD because of you, mainly because you were able to take care of most of his reinforcements and still managed to tank the combined strength of me and Akeno's attacks while holding him down." Rias reminded me. "Say, how did you not lose anything when you got hit with my power of destruction?"

"Beats me." I shrugged, I've built my body up to be durable enough to withstand the immense pressure of the ocean's depths without proper equipment back before I was even a devil. Maybe my body is capable of tanking almost anything.

After a while, we arrived at the first year classroom and looked inside, noticing how most of the students were gone except for five. Koneko was glaring at a blonde girl with drill-like hair, who was talking to two female students while Gasper hid in the corner of the room. I thought he was getting help for his social anxiety. Ravel was wearing the school uniform like the rest of us, unsurprising, but it worked surprisingly well for her. However, contrary to her normal, Princess-like demeanor, she was having trouble communicating with her fellow class men. She was pretty shy until she noticed Rias and I, then she let out a meek sounding "Excuse me..." before walking towards Rias and I. Ravel suddenly grabbed onto both our hands and dragged us out of the classroom. We walked down the hall for a bit before Rias decided to stop us.

"Ravel, what's wrong?" Rias questioned the small blonde girl, checking to make sure she was doing okay. "You looked nervous?"

"Were they harassing you?" I got my Lauer out and cocked it, but Rias tried making me put it back in my pocket.

"It's not that, it's just that it's my first time transferring to a school." Ravel looked embarrassed, given her red face and the fact that she was pressing her fingers together. "I d-don't know how to interact with everyone...I'm a devil, so I can't come up with a subject to talk about with humans."

"Okay, I'm no help here." I put my Lauer away, and talking to people was never really my strong suit. "Rias, you're good at talking to people. Any ideas?"

"Just to be clear, you don't hate them or anything, correct?" Rias crosses her arms, and Ravel thinks for a bit before shaking her head.

"No I don't hate any of them, I think they're nice, I just don't know what to talk about." Ravel explained her situation a bit more clearly. "Like What is a devil noble supposed to talk about with humans who don't know about the supernatural world?"

"You could talk about things that interest them, and things that interest you so long as they don't revolve around supernatural things." Rias suggested, and I was mentally making notes.

"To help you, why don't we call over Koneko?" I pulled out my phone to call Koneko , but I was suddenly caught off guard by someone talking behind me.

"I'm right here, so no need." Koneko was behind me for gods know how long with Gasper hiding behind her, surprising me. "(Y/N), I thought you were able to sense things through the ground."

"I am, but my feet need to make contact with the ground first." I crossed my arms. "Also is there any chance you can help Ravel get over her fear of people and social interaction?"

"Don't you need that kind of help as well?" Koneko questioned, and I avoided eye contact with her for a moment. "Very well then, if Senpai is asking me, then it's the least I can do..." Koneko agreed, and I noticed a glimmer of hope in Ravel's eyes before Koneko destroyed that hope. "Hetare Chicken Princess."

(A/N: Hetare means someone who's useless or weak willed, like Aqua from Konosuba. I couldn't find an English word for it, so we're using weeb language.)

"...W-What did you just call me?" Ravel questioned as her eyebrow twitched in fury and a blood vessel could be seen on her forehead.

"Hetare. Chicken. Princess." Koneko slowed her speech to allow Ravel to understand her, much to me and Rias' horror.

"Y-Y-You dare talk to the daughter of house Phoenix in such a manner?!" Ravel was pissed as she grit her teeth together, all while Koneko kept her signature emotionless expression on her face. "Do you not have any manners?"

"Manners?" Koneko radiated a strong aura of confidence, yet her expression is still the same. "You came to the human realm with a strong resolve, yet when it comes down to it, you become a hetare and bother (Y/N)."

"I did not do this just to trouble (Y/N) you nekomata!" Ravel shouted, and I was grateful that no one was here to hear her, since most of them most likely went home.

"Chicken."

"(Y-Y/N), I'm scared...!" Gasper hid behind me, and I decided that I've let this little fight go on long enough.

"Pardon me but..." I grabbed the collars of both Koneko and Ravel and held them up like children. "...This needs to end. Gasper is scared, so now I'm afraid it is time to stop."

"Whose side are you on?" Koneko and Ravel both glared at me, expecting an answer.

"I am on the side of reason, so please try to understand one another." I requested the two girls. "In the meantime, I'm heading over to the old school building to do some construction."

"I'll come with you." Rias offered as I gently set both Ravel and Koneko down so I could begin walking back to the old school building.

Rias and I both left the current school building to begin walking to the old school building. I wasn't going to use magic to turn parts of my body into tools, but Rias didn't want us to use magic. I personally found it a good reminder that I'm still a student first and foremost, so I accepted it. I also requested that my father bring my tools to the old clubroom, since he wanted to help with the festival. I began planning for how many walls I'll have to demolish to make the haunted house I was put in charge of possible, but as I did so, I began noticing the sound of someone playing the flute. "Do you hear that?" I questioned Rias, who looked confused.

"Hear what?" Rias questioned while looking around, as for me, I managed to pinpoint the location of the noise, which was coming from the forest.

"A flute, I'll go investigate." I pulled my Lauer out and began entering the forest while turning my eyes into robotic versions of themselves. Granting me heat vision in the process. "If anything goes wrong, I'll light the forest on fire."

"Alright, be careful." Rias ordered, and I nodded before entering the thick forest.

I was able to easily traverse the thick forest, but something was off, I wasn't picking up anything. I couldn't see anything with my heat vision, and I even took off my shoes to use my earth sense, still nothing. "Turn off (Y/N)'s heat vision." An unfamiliar voice called out from behind me once I ventured deep enough into the forest. I quickly turned around and deactivated my heat vision while pointing my Lauer at the figure behind me. Much to my shock, there was indeed someone behind me, but they had no body temperature, like a corpse. He was sitting on a boulder that was a couple meters off the ground, holding a flute in his hands. He wore a pitch black cloak like the Grim reaper, and his body only supported this comparison. His pale white body was nothing but skin and bones, showing no signs of muscle as his face looked like a skull. His rainbow colored irises in his sunken eye sockets were the only color on this man's face, that is until I noticed a rainbow tear-like pattern running down his face. Any other details about him were covered by the rugged and tattered black cloak. "Heat vision can't pick up Vagus."

"Vagus?" I noticed this guy doesn't use pronouns, instead using people's names. Like how he referred to my heat vision as '(Y/N)'s heat vision.' and not 'Your heat vision'. "Why are you talking like Riser?"

"Sorry Vagus has a reason to talk like this, and Riser has to talk like this because Riser is so stupid that Riser will forget Riser's name." Vagus explained. "Vagus has regrets involving clan Phenex, along with the entire supernatural world, but that's not why Vagus is here. Vagus is here to help...at a cost."

"Sorry Sir, but my soul is not for sale, even at the exchange of god-like power." I was about to leave, but then I felt a frail hand on my shoulder. Despite the hand being frail, I was filled with immense fear. This feeling...I have never felt this feeling in my life.

The fear of death.

That's the emotion I was suddenly filled with, and a cold sweat trickled down my neck. Behind me was Vacus, who was off his boulder and behind me. "Vagus is sorry for scaring (Y/N), but this is the only way (Y/N) will listen to Vagus." Vagus sounded genuine, and my fear was gone. "How about Vagus tells (Y/N) why Vagus is here? Will that make (Y/N) trust Vagus."

"Even if I do listen to you, how will I know you're not lying?" I questioned, and Vagus simply rubbed the back of his head sheepishly.

"Unlike with the devil and god, all is fair in death." Vagus held up a single finger to his smiling mouth. "All things will die one day, there is no exception to that. It is a reaper's duty to ensure they die and return to the afterlife, there are no exceptions, even Vagus will die one day once Vagus' duty is complete."

"So you're death?" I questioned, and Vagus nodded nonchalantly. I guess hat would explain his lack of body temperature and skeletal body. "I guess I can trust you then, so why are you here?"

"Has (Y/N) never questioned how his fellow ultimate students remember themselves dying, have those scars, and are somehow perfectly alive? Like Sarah was hung and burned alive, Ayako was dissected until she died, Onihime became a blood splatter against a wall, and so on." Vagus pointed at himself. "Vagus and the rest of Vagus' team revived them to play a role in our future plans, which is not anything evil, but then (Y/N) came along...so the team decided to help (Y/N) become the change the supernatural world needs."

"So you're here to protect the ultimate students?" I questioned, and Vagus nodded. "You're also the one who revived them?"

"Vagus can't revive people, if Vagus goes against the reaper rules, Vagus will be in pain for a very loooong time!" Vagus waved his hands in the air. "Instead, one of Vagus' allies revived them because my ally is the grandson of Hel and can do that."

"What does that have to do with me?" I sheathed my Lauer into my pocket and crossed my arms.

"Two things, the first thing is that you'll lose against Sairaorg with the way you are now." Vagus held up a single finger. "(Y/N) is just like Sairaorg as (Y/N) knows him, and (Y/N) would win if it wasn't for one small, tiny detail that Vagus won't tell (Y/N) about. While it is true (Y/N) surpasses Sairaorg in endurance and magic power no matter what, Sairaorg will surpass (Y/N) in everything else thanks to this detail. Plus magic won't be helpful once Sairaorg uses this detail. Once Sairaorg uses this detail, (Y/N) will lose because (Y/N) has nothing that can directly fight against this detail. All (Y/N) can do is defend against this detail using Genbu."

"Why does it matter if I lose?" I shrugged, I was okay with losing against Sairaorg. He was a good person, unlike Diodora or Riser. "Sairaorg is pretty honest, worthy of someone from house Bael."

"OI OI OI, DOES (Y/N) WANT TO DISAPPOINT RIAS AND EVERYONE!?"  Vagus repeatedly karate chopped at my head, and it honestly didn't hurt. "Vagus was going to help (Y/N) win, but now Vagus isn't so sure... Vagus was so certain that (Y/N) would want to defeat Sairaorg, that way more people would listen and respect (Y/N). More people that respect (Y/N) means more people will support (Y/N)."

"How can I beat Sairaorg if he surpasses me in everything besides endurance and magic?" I tilted my head, and Vagus smiled.

"Simple, Genbu, or more weapons like Genbu." Vagus pulled a scroll out of his sleeve. "(Y/N) can't use god killer mode yet, so (Y/N) must make up for that lack of skill with numbers." Vagus held the scroll towards me. "There's six total weapons in here, all (Y/N) needs to do is spill a bit of blood on the paper, and the weapons appear in a puff of smoke."

I was about to take the scroll, but then Vagus moved it out of my reach and held two fingers in front of my face. "There's a catch isn't there?"

"Yep, (Y/N) remembers how (Y/N) turned every talent in the talented course into a unique kind of magic?" Vagus asked, and I nodded to confirm this. "There are people going after the ultimate students since most of them were meant to die, so the people are after them to keep the balance of the universe. Even though Vagus' group is super powerful and totally awesome, the group can only be in so many places at once. The group needs the students to be able to defend themselves."

"What does this have to do with my magic?" To be honest, I was okay with losing most of those magics, most of them are too specific to be helpful, but none are as helpful as my ocean, Druidic, or secret magic.

"If (Y/N) gives those magic to Vagus, then Vagus will deliver each magic to each student that possesses that talent." Vagus' sounded innocent and with no real ill intention, but the offer itself was suspicious.

"How do I know you're not just after the magic itself?" I wondered while tilting my head.

"If Vagus had wanted power, then Vagus wouldn't have given it away." Vagus held out his hand. "So what do you say?"

"Guess I have no better options." I sighed and shook the man's hand, causing me to feel like I lost a part of myself, but luckily, I still obtained all the knowledge I obtained from those talents. Meaning my skills remained the same.

"Since reapers are physically unable to lie, here are your relics!" Vagus placed the scroll in my hand. "Just as promised, and don't worry, I won't use any of these Magic's. I'll deliver them to their students, just as promised! Also, we probably won't meet again, so feel free to forget about me!"

After the first time I heard Vagus use a pronoun, he walked into the darkness of the forest and disappeared, leaving me with the scroll. To be honest, since I still have the knowledge from the talents, I could probably recreate them, but from scratch. It would take some time, but I can relearn the magic since it was like I completely forgot how to use the magic. Chances are I won't though, I have stronger magic now. I shrugged, deciding that this was not that big of a deal and walked back to the old school building. As I did so, I decided to examine the scroll, which had the images of six different kinds of weapons, all of which looked just as ridiculous as Genbu. Moments later, I arrived at the old school building, where Asger and Kiba were standing at the bed of my truck, looking over some blueprints until they noticed me.

"Hey (Y/N), you ready to get started?"

"Yeah, I am."

(Timeskip, brought to you by Kiba trying to use a saw to cut down an old wall and struggling while (Y/N) tackled through the wall like the fucken Kool Aid Man)

So...tomorrow is the rating game against Sairaorg. So to do that, I decided to go into the sauna since I heard it helps relieve stress. For the record, we do have a sauna and cold bath that were connected to the hall that was connected to the hot spring. Like how the hot springs are on the left side of the hall, the sauna is on the right side while the cold bath is at the opposite end of the staircase. Architecture of the bottom level of my house aside, I entered the sauna wearing nothing but a towel around my waist. I decided to let my hair down to properly relax. My hair now covered my eyes and reached below my nose. I closed the door to the sauna behind me and sat on one of the benches. I did nothing but sit on that bench for a solid twenty seconds before sweat finally began pouring out of my body. Still, it was nothing much, so I decided to wait longer before entering the cold bath. If I enter the cold bath when I can no longer take the heat, then it should feel refreshing. At least, that's what I read in a book once. As I was sitting there, I noticed that the door opened, and through the thick steam that filled the room, I noticed a familiar hair of crimson red hair. Why is Rias here? Then I noticed she was wearing nothing, not even a towel.

"Oh, (Y/N), good to see you." Rias' hair was wet and clinging to her well endowed body, and I stood up to leave before Rias placed a hand on my shoulder before gently pushing me back down. "It's okay for you to stare, so please stay a while longer."

With that said, I decided to let Rias sit directly next to me, and she brushed her fingers through her wet hair before sitting next to me, cross legged. Given how she strongly smelled of rose-scented shampoo, she just came out of the bath. Rias was also sitting so close to me, our shoulders were practically touching. I'm certain my face was bright red in color, and I was looking away from Rias because I didn't know what to do in this situation, and I didn't want my 'friend downstairs' to get too excited, that would get awkward. I was curious as to why Rias was here, but what she said next gave me a clue as to what she wanted.

"It's Just the two of us, if I was to be pushed down by (Y/N), I wonder what would happen to me." Rias thought out loud, and I didn't understand. Why would I want to push her onto the ground? Rias is pretty and nice, I don't want to hurt her. "But by now you must be bored of seeing my body, since you've seen it so much."

"I don't think so, Rias is incredibly beautiful, and I doubt I would get bored of looking at you if I looked at you for one million years." One million was the highest number I knew about right now.

Usually Rias sometimes likes to tease me and I answer back as honestly as I always do, but something was different this time. Rias suddenly grabbed onto my hand, confusing me, before she suddenly placed it over her breast above her heart. My face burned hotter now from embarrassment, but Rias looked calm as usual. Her body was now wet with sweat, giving the soft object a slightly damp feeling. Through her chest, I could feel her heartbeat, and it was racing.

"If that's how you really feel...then push me down right here..." Rias demanded seductively, and despite her orders, I couldn't move myself. My face was burning so hot I could possibly cook on my cheek. In response to my silence and lack of movement, Rias spoke up again. "(Y/N)...what am I to you...?"

"I don't know, I don't even think there's a name for our kind of relationship." I finally answered while trying to remove my hand from Rias' chest, but her grip was firm. "All I know is that we're close."

"Then how about we confirm what we are~?"

My hand was removed from Rias' chest before she suddenly pushed me down and rested her body on top of my own. Given how both of us were now naked after my towel fell off, I could feel every small detail in the girl's body as Rias' lips planted themselves onto my own. I could feel Rias' chest press against my own, and Rias wrapped her legs around mine. While she kissed me, Rias forced her tongue into my mouth, tangling our tongues together before we had to break the kiss for air.

"Lady Rias, I'm not sure about this..." My head was clouded with the events going on, so I was running on the bare minimum of focus. Unfortunately for me, calling her 'Lady Rias' didn't appear to make her happy.

"...'Lady Rias', is that what you call the woman you're about to make love to...?" Rias got off of me in an expressionless manner, and I was concerned. No I don't care about me possibly ruining my first time, I was concerned with Rias. Sudden changes in her mood like this is usually bad news. "Even if I do this much....you still treat me like a weak little princess..." Rias suddenly asked me the same question. "To you, what am I?"

"Rias, I don't know, but are you okay, you're shaking?" I got up as Rias did and I was concerned. Her hair cast a dark shadow over her eyes, yet her body was trembling from rage. Is she okay? Did I do something wrong? Is she mad? She's mad. Can I do anything to cheer her up? Suddenly, Rias began storming off, still trembling. "Wai-"

"Don't follow me." Rias ordered me in a cold and harsh voice just as I was about to follow her, and before I could get another word in, Rias left the sauna, slamming the door as she left.

"I hope she's okay..."

(Timeskip, brought to you by (Y/N) slamming his head against the stone wall in shame, causing it to crack)

"Okay...I swear I need to get some of these girls a shock collar, given how they keep pulling this shit with you."

I was currently in the kitchen, making something with the stove and my knowledge as the Ultimate Cook while Natalia sat at the bar, drinking some tea to help her sleep. Natalia had her brown hair up, paired with her usual glasses, yellow tank top, and taco patterned pajama bottoms. She likes the taco patterned ones because she considers them ironic, since she's from Mexico, and Mexico is often associated with tacos in common media. I personally associate the country with being the result of Aztecs and conquistadors, but whatever. I was talking to Natalia about what has just transpired, since Asger was asleep.

"I feel as though some of this is my fault, she was clearly upset after I called her 'Lady Rias', so the blame falls on me." I was using a spatula to control the rice in the pan.

"It's not entirely YOUR fault, it's just a flaw of yours." Natalia sipped her tea. "You may have gotten better compared to what we've first met, but you still have an inferiority complex. You see yourself as the worst possible thing someone can be, and everyone else as angels. Bad example given how you're a devil, but you get the idea."

"If that is what caused Rias to act like this, then I must fix it as soon as possible." I used my spare hand to make an omelet in the other pan.

"Hey, this is also Rias' fault." Natalia pointed out. "You see, when someone is in love with another person, they forget about the other person's flaws until it causes situations like this. Rias is clearly in love with you, and forget you still don't feel worthy of them."

"That's because I'm not deserving of them, no one is." I looked at the plate to the side of the stove. "I'm slow, stupid, easy to take advtange of, and I don't deserve anyone."

"But they still love you enough to look past your flaws, so I'd recommend you stop putting people on pedestals and start seeing them for who they are." Natalia looked at the pan. "Also, what are you cooking?"

"Omurice, I noticed that Rias didn't eat dinner since she was hiding in her room, so I'm making her something." I answered as I finished making the omurice. "I don't know what her favorite dish is, but I know she's a Japanophile, so I'm making a Japanese dish."

"Dios mio nino, you're way too nice." Natalia laughed as I picked some ketchup out of the fridge.

With the ketchup, I wrote 'I'm sorry' in kanji on the completed omurice, and my kanji was terrible, but readable. I picked the plate of omurice up and began walking to Rias' room, which was locked. I knocked on Rias' door before placing the plate in front of the door, since I was fully aware that she most likely didn't wish to see me, I wanted to respect her wishes. After setting the plate in front of the door, I began walking away. As I walked, I heard the sound of a door opening, the plate being picked up, and then the door closing once again.

I pray she's okay.

(A/N: You know, I'm usually not a fan of drama shit, I'm only doing this to experiment with writing dramas and suspense. Why am I not resolving this in one chapter? Idk, suspense testing. Also, I apologize for not uploading anything in a while, busy ass weak. And before you guys say something like "donor forget to rest" or "take care of yourself". News flash! Writing fanfics is the only thing that allows me to relieve stress efficiently. But I do appreciate the concern tho my dudes. Also, "did I really have to get rid of the MC's talent magic?" The answer is yes. Cause in all honesty, I couldn't think of a way the MC could have won against Sairaorg without trading them. Even though the MC can use Ddraig for now, he doesn't know how to use a balance breaker because his own sacred gear doesn't have one yet. Anyhow, peace bros.
