Chapter 7: Familiar Forest

(Your POV)
There was a blast of crimson before I opened my eyes to see we were now in the familiar forest. I was back in my school uniform, still with my book bag and desert eagle on me just in case. I'm not one to waste time, so I decided to head take a moment to feel the wind around me. All was still for a moment before I caught the sense of sea salt on the breeze, I managed to pinpoint what direction the ocean breeze was coming from. A perk of living where I am I guess, but before I could take off, Rias grabbed my sleeve.

"Where are you going?" Rias asked, not like a person with a short temper, but like a friend who's genuinely curious. "I don't want you getting hurt here."

"Sona already gave me the instructions to find the being who can remove my curse, so I'm going to the water." I gently removed my master's hand from my sleeve, careful not to hurt her. "You needn't worry about me, Issei thinks I'm immortal, if that's any comfort."

"I don't think, I know you're immortal!" Issei shouts, with a follow up statement close behind. "Remember that time you got hit with a crowbar and the crowbar bent?"

"See, I'll be fine." I reassured my master the best I could before letting go of her hands. "I'll come back when my job is complete, Koneko, try not to murder Issei when he pulls something perverted."

"We'll see..." Koneko cracked her knuckles and I walked towards the source of the water.

As I walked through the forest, the smells of sea salt became stronger and stronger overtime. A cool breeze that only the sea could make brushed past my face and through my hair, and I knew I was going the correct direction. I went a couple more meters, and I was officially at the cliffside overlooking the ocean. There were a set of stone stairs leading down to a beach of silver sand, so I walked down the steps and began running through my bag to find if I have any crocodile jerky. I did, and I pulled the packet out before pulling three sticks of jerky out. I reached the sand it felt softer than any sand I've ever been on, but I still stayed true to my original purpose. I reeled my arm back and threw the pieces of jerky as far as I could manage, sending them an impressive distance while they just floated in place. From here, I had no idea what to do, but before I could walk away, water erupted from the jerky. From the water a great serpent appeared before me with it's mighty jaws open before snapping shut in an instant. Before me was a great serpent, and even I began to grow scared of the sight before me. The serpent turned its attention to me, and spoke in a deep voice.

"It has been a long while since the last man came before me..." The serpent leaned towards me in curiosity, and I could feel it's breath before me, and it was cold and salty. "Now I see, you're a child of the sea..."

"I would prefer it if you didn't call me that, if that's okay with you." I stayed calm in this situation and spoke politely, the only way I'd think I'd survive.

"I can see your heritage clearly thanks to that coat around your waist..." The serpent was referring to my parka, which was the only thing I got from my mother. "Given how you are a child of man and sea...your mother must be gone...I apologize for your loss..."

"No apologies needed, the two of us weren't very close." I accepted the fact that my mother despised me a long time ago, and I've made peace with the fact I am not worthy of affection. "Forgive me for being rude, but what may I call you?"

"It appears I let my excitement for speech get the better of me..." The serpent gives out a hefty breath before introducing himself. "I am Jörmungandr, the World Serpent, and what may I call you. Child of the Sea?"

"My birth name is (Y/N) (L/N), son of Asger (L/N)." I introduced myself with a humble bow, my father was the only person whom I can claim any pride being related to, most because it's not entirely clear if he hates me or not.

"Asger (L/N)...I know that name..." Jörmungandr informs me, much to my surprise. "I have not heard from him in many moons...but I do know that he's currently landlocked in the west lands..."

"The west lands?" I asked, not really certain about where that could be before thinking of a map for five seconds. "Do you mean the Americas?"

"They go by many names...so yes..." Jörmungandr answered, but then I asked about the whole 'landlocked' deal. "His ship got destroyed in a sea storm...along with all his personal belongings..."

"As glad as I am to hear my father is still alive, I actually came here for help." I explained my predicament to Jörmungandr, mainly the curse part about the invisible chains. "Is there any chance you can remove it?"

"Of course...but you must beat in a contest first..." Jörmungandr laughed a bit before gesturing to an island in the distance with his head. "You must reach that island over there before I...only then can I remove your curse..."

"Can you at least allow me to visibly see the chains?" I asked, which confused Jörmungandr before I explained my reasoning. "The chains feel uneven at times, and I'm curious to see what they look like."

Jörmungandr agrees and for a moment, there was nothing before I saw chains wrapped around my left leg, chest, right wrist, right ankle, and I even felt some of the chains around my neck. All of the chains were connected intricately, and still allowing some free movement. However, then there are the weights. A long chain originating from my ankle is connected to an anchor about my height, a chain around my wrist is connected to a massive steel ball the size of those yoga balls. Around my leg was an anvil just dangling there, and there were also smaller weights all around my neck chain.

"Thank you, Jörmungandr." I thanked the serpent and looked at my weights and chains before setting down my bag. "On the count of three, we'll begin the race, correct?"

"Indeed." Jörmungandr aimed his pointed head at the island while I walked into the water, due to me always having these chains, they didn't weigh me down all that much. "3...2...1...Begin...!"

Without a moment's hesitation after the serpent said '2', I grabbed the chain connected to the anchor and threw it directly above Jörmungandr's head, managing to make it loop over before using the ball to hook itself to the anchor. After I made the connection, Jörmungandr began swimming towards the distant island at great speeds, pulling me along with him. The chain managed to stay wrapped around it's head, and I used the ball chain to pull myself up towards the serpent's head. The wind and waves crashed against me, but I was determined to win this contest.

One hand in front of the other, I kept on pulling myself up until I was finally atop of Jörmungandr's serpentine head. The winds were strong, but for my master, I would become stronger. I dislodged the chains and hung either one at either side of Jörmungandr's giant head as I trudged forward, trying to get to the nose of the great serpent. Water and wind blew through my hair and stung my eyes from the speed, but I didn't care. I trudged forward bit by bit until I saw the island was in sight. I increased my speed with pain in my eyes, but my adrenaline was overwhelming all of the pain.

I finally reached Jörmungandr's snout and used the high speeds to stand on the snout as the island got ever closer. I held my hand out as Jörmungandr crashed onto the golden sands of the island, with myself getting right in the middle of the crash. I felt a good portion of my bones snap, but in the end, I won the contest. I laughed a bit as Jörmungandr finally realized what I did and quickly moved his head back to examine me in the crater. Most of my limbs were bent in unnatural ways, and for once I felt pain, but I was laughing.

"Impressive...you not only withstood the might of me crashing into the sand...but also laughed about it..." Jörmungandr was clearly amused by my laughter. "You know you couldn't win against me in a contest of speed...so you risked injuring your very body to win...you're an interesting one."

"Thank you..." I tried standing up, but my legs would not allow it. "...and here I told Lady Rias not to worry, I truly am just a mere fool."

"From what I have seen...you are no fool...but a true warrior who fights for what he believes in..." Jörmungandr chuckles a bit as my limbs begin repairing themselves and the chains begin coming undone. "True to my word...your curse will bother you no more...but I propose another reward for your trickery..."

"If you're offering, I'll listen." I heard the snaps and cracks of my body repairing itself with what I'm gonna guess is magic.

"It has been many years since a true warrior such as yourself as graced the Earth...and even I respect warriors..."  Jörmungandr complimented me, which felt nice. "I shall become your patron...granting you power to serve your master."

"Neato." I didn't know how to respond, but I clearly caught Jörmungandr off guard.

"I like you already..." Jörmungandr laughs a bit before gesturing to the boulder and the palm tree. "Within the boulder is a weapon worthy of someone possessing my power...and within the tree is a book possessing spells that my power can be used..."

"I thank you, Jörmungandr." I stood up to my full height as my bones were still healing. "I shall use this power you gifted me to the best of my abilities."

"This is normally the part where I tell you the price of this power...but you don't plan on using this power for yourself...you wish for nothing more than to serve your master..." Jörmungandr correctly guessed. "But I must ask you...why are you so insistent on serving someone you can easily kill once you learn to accept your past?"

"Two reasons...I want to be enough for someone, and I fear being left behind." I was honest to the serpent, mostly because I respected him. "Living a life of solitude and without meaning is something I can't stand, so that's why I must become stronger."

"I have not met this master of yours...but something tells me she, along with your allies...won't leave you behind..." Jörmungandr informed me as I walked towards the boulder, deciding to punch it and somehow causing it to shatter upon impact. "By the gods...are you sure you're not related to Thor...?"

"No, my father was a human." I answered briefly as I walked through the pieces of the boulder and came across an odd weapon.

The weapon appeared to just be a turtle shell shield slightly taller than me, the shield was beautiful, so I picked it up. On the other side, I saw that the shield had an anchor. The curved bottom of the anchor was aligned perfectly with the upper part of the shield whilst the thick pole connected to a hilt. I didn't know how the anchor was staying attached to the shield, but then I saw a couple grips along the inside of the shell. These many grips appeared adjustable, meaning I can change their position.

"The weapon's name is Genbu." Jörmungandr informed me as I began looking around the weapon, noticing a trigger and pressing it, causing the anchor to shoot out of the shield towards the sky.

An ethereal chain seemed to appear, connecting the loop of the anchor to the bottom of the shield. The chain seemed to go on forever, since it was continually adding more links as it soared, so I grabbed the chain and yanked the anchor towards me. As I did so, I accidently dropped the anchor on top of the tree, forcing it in half and revealing a book on the ground. I picked up the book and put it in my bag before bowing respectfully towards Jörmungandr.

"I appreciate these gifts, Great Serpent Jörmungandr." I thanked the serpent before standing up fully. "However, I must be getting back to my friends, if you don't mind."

"I wish you the best of luck for the future...say...you need a familiar yes?"

(Timeskip, brought to you by (Y/N) swinging Genbu's anchor into the camera, knocking it over)

As I walked back through the forest back to where my friends were, I was reading the spell book Jörmungandr gave me, trying to process the most basic of the spells. The spells were surprisingly varied in terms of elements, the most common elements were water, sand, wind, lightning, ice, salt, and even fish. However, my peaceful stroll was interrupted by sounds of screaming and discomfort, so I closed the book and started running towards everyone with Genbu on my back. After I got those chains off of me, I felt much lighter, and that I could run forever. My body was used to the extra weight ever since I was little. It's like going your entire life with 5 tons on you, and then finally removing that extra weight.

As I ran through the forest, I pulled out my desert eagle in case anyone was injured, but the scene wasn't as life threatening as I expected it to be. I reached the scene and was understandably confused at the sight of Kiba trying to tear green slime off his eyes, Issei jumping around like a monkey on cocaine, there was a tiny blue dragon flying around, and all the girl's' clothes were being melted off thanks to the same slime that was on Kiba's face. My brain was trying to process all of this, and then Issei noticed I was there.

"Yo, (Y/N), you're not gonna believe this, slime started raining from the sky and now the girls' clothes are burning off!" Issei says with excitement, and now I have context, but still. "Say (Y/N), did you get that curse removed?"

"Indeed I did." I couldn't look away from the scene in front of me because I was trying to find a solution to this, so I began looking through my book bag. "I also got a familiar."

"Oh sweet, Asia got that blue dragon familiar over there." Issei gestured towards the hovering blue dragon. "So what did you get? A crow, a hawk, a seagull, or maybe even a magic seal?"

"So these are your friends..." Jörmungandr looks at all of us from above, causing everyone to stare at the great serpent in pure horror. "Oh...it appears those pesky little slimes have appeared again..."

Jörmungandr opened his great maw and let out a great roar, forcing all of the slimes to flee in horror, leaving the girls with no clothing on them. I had found some bath towels I keep in my bag in case I spill blood on the ground, I took off my white collared shirt and gave it to Akeno, gave my thin black undershirt to Asia, gave Koneko the bath towel, and gave Rias my parka. I would have given Koneko a shirt, but my supplies were limited, and I didn't want to trouble Issei or Kiba. There was a moment of silence between all of us before Rias spoke up.

"(Y/N)...while I am glad you removed your curse and got a familiar, I kind of expected your familiar to be a sea animal, like an octopus." Rias started calmly as she wrapped the parka around her tighter. "Yet you somehow managed to get Jörmungandr, the world serpent and rival of Thor, to be your familiar?"

"Yep."

"Also, why do you just have a towel in your bag?" Koneko asked, trying to process why I have a towel in the first place.

"I get stabbed at least once a month, so I keep a towel handy to prevent floors from getting dirty." I answered honestly, which didn't exactly help.

"If you get stabbed, your priority should not be the floor!" Issei shouted, and made Jörmungandr laugh a bit.

"He has the true soul of someone who belongs in Valhalla..." Jörmungandr complimented me, but Asia was having none of it.

"(Y/N), please worry about yourself a bit more." Asia pleaded, and due to her being adorable, I was forced to accept.

"Okay then, everyone, we're leaving." Rias announced, and I was prepared to say goodbye to Jörmungandr, but then Issei pointed out something.

"Wait, I didn't get a familiar yet!" Issei whined, and I felt genuinely bad for him. "Just give me five minutes!"

"Issei, we've been here for half an hour, so if you haven't found one yet, maybe it's time to accept this isn't your day and move on." Kiba convinced Issei to get a move on. "Besides, we can come back some time later."

"Fine, but I want something as cool as (Y/N)'s." Issei pouted like a child as a crimson magic circle enveloped us all. "Or maybe something with nice badonkers."

"Would it count as beastiality if Issei is attracted to a familiar with a nice figure?" I asked, gaining a couple shrugs. "Like a mermaid or something?"

"That's a valid question, but I am too tired to answer it so let's just leave it at that." Issei becomes a lot more tired all of a sudden, must be because he wasted all his energy acting like a coked up Monkey.

"So are none of us going to mention that (Y/N)'s shirtless?" Akeno pointed out, and I felt slightly embarrassed, I don't exactly like showing my body off.

"Oh that's a common trope in harem fanfics, but we're not gonna talk about it because he's threatening my place as the harem king." Issei mentions.

Wait, he still thinks he's the harem king?

(A/N: Something has always confused me about the DxD universe. Which myth created the universe? Like there's the Aztec myth where the earth a Lovecraftian horror, and a Norse myth involving Odin. Yet the entire premise of this fanservice-filled series is for every myth to be real, so which mythology created the universe?! On other thing, I know at least one of you guys suggested I make the MC's familiar a kraken, which isn't a bad idea, so I am going to make the MC connected to a kraken later.
