Chapter 59: A Day with Akeno
(Your POV)
Today was the day of me and Akeno's date, and I was rather nervous because I have never been on a date before, I didn't wish to mess it up for her. I was wearing a tropical shirt, pants, tennis shoes, a watch, and one of those bags you wear on your chest. I also had my seal print hat I got from Ireland on my head, since today was supposed to be sunny. Despite that, I came prepared. I had my bag full of essentials we might need, like sunscreen, bandaids, soap, etc. I looked at my watch and noticed it was around ten'o'clock. Akeno and I agreed to go on a date around this time, so I sensed the town using my earth sense. I saw some people I recognized, like Dagda was in a bar drinking with Azazel, the latter of whom was more focused on finding a one night stand. Natalia was getting some new glasses just to be on the safe side in case something happens. Asger was on the opposite side of the town, at the shooting range with Sang. Unohanna was buying some wool from the arts and crafts store with her little brother, Nico was in the center of the town, acting like one of those mall Santas for no reason. Ayako was in a cat cafe, playing with cats, and Onihime was in the repair shop for work. Tojuro was in the arcade, challenging everyone to a dancing game. Yozakura and Sarah were in a restaurant, eating some spicy curry. Sarah handled the spice extremely well, while Yozakura had some trouble. A bit closer to me, I noticed that there were several people. Rias, Xenovia, Asia, Koneko, and even Irina wore disguises while hiding behind a telephone pole, but the disguises were sloppy and didn't even hide their faces entirely. Even if it did, I would recognize them by hair alone. Issei, Gasper, and Kiba were with them of course, wearing more casual clothing. Well, Gasper had a paper bag over his head, so I assume that's his version of casual.
"(Y/N), sorry I'm late!" Akeno ran towards me wearing heels, a purple dress with frills, and her hair was down. "It was harder to move than I expected in these shoes."
"Then why wear them, you're perfectly beautiful as it is?" I asked whilst tilting my head, nowadays, Akeno and I have been more honest with each other, bringing us closer to one another. "If you'd like, I can list off evidence of my claim."
"No need, you telling me I'm beautiful is enough, since you have no idea how to lie or flirt." Akeno knew this, and I noticed that my compliment was enough to get her to smile. "Shall we get started with this date?"
"If you're ready, then let us begin. However, let me know if your feet start to hurt." I suggested, and Akeno agreed, signaling the beginning of our date, but then I remembered something. "Say, what should we do about our stalkers?"
"They're not hurting anyone, so let's let them have their fun." Akeno suggested while she suddenly started clinging to my arm. "Besides, today is all about you and me, so let's just have some fun."
To start the date off, Akeno and I decided to get some crepes since I accidentally overslept this morning and skipped breakfast just to be here on time. We found a crepe truck in the park, so we headed there for the time being. I decided to order a crepe with cream cheese and blueberry while Akeno had a strawberry banana ice crepe. Akeno and I sat on the park bench to simply talk about life to one another, mainly about small details that we never really got to talk about due to devil business. Apparently she uploads videos onto Devitube about traditional performing arts and how to do them, like traditional dancing and the tea ceremony.
"I honestly would have guessed you'd be too busy to do stuff like that, since you're almost always at Rias' side." I bit into my crepe, and I officially decided blueberries are sweet, confusing at times, but sweet.
"I can see why you'd think that, but trust me, Rias is a fan of those videos, so she lets me continue my Devitube account." Akeno pointed out before thinking out loud. "Say, why don't you start an account?"
"What would I upload?" I asked, I didn't really have anything unique to me or anything, so I'm not sure what I'd make content about. "I don't plan on starting an account, just curious."
"You can probably upload advice on machines, since you're good at building them or maybe how to take care of certain flowers." Akeno suggested, and it wasn't a bad idea. "Or you could be one of those history Devitubers that simplify history to make it easy to learn. However I think you should focus on supernatural history since no one covers everything, they just focus on their faction."
"That's not a bad idea, maybe I'll do it when I have the time." I then noticed that both of us almost finished our crepes. "So where do you want to go after this? Movies? Cat cafe? Dance class?"
"How about the aquarium?" Akeno suggested before giggling to herself innocently. "Who knows? You may see a couple relatives in the seal exhibit."
"Maybe." I thought to myself, I heard selkies could go their entire lives in their seal skins, I just choose not to because I like being a human better, and flippers can't use guns all that well.
"It was just a joke (Y/N), selkies can easily escape by turning into their human forms and pretending to be a human that somehow got in." Akeno teased while she finished her crepe. "Well that's a guess anyways."
"It's accurate, but I would honestly feel bad for the guy who has to take care of that though." I thought of the situation. "Imagine you get a new seal for the exhibit, and mid way through the day it disappears and is replaced by some guy you've never met wearing a jacket or cloak."
"I've always wondered something, are all selkie coats different or is there some form of uniform I don't see?" Akeno asked, and I didn't know much about selkies, but I still decided to give it my best shot.
"Selkies are born with their cloaks, and their cloak will always be the exact size needed for the child at their peak height." I explained. "They can be anything that can cover the entire body and can be made of seal skin. I was born with a parka, some can be born with sleeping bags, but most are born with blankets."
With that explanation out of the way, Akeno and I made our way towards the aquarium. I paid for our entry fee at the entrance to allow both of us to enter the aquarium. Akeno and I began our little trip by looking at the various shallow water fish, or fishes that live in coral reefs in one of those walkways that allow you to see underwater. This view was nothing to me because I swam in the ocean a lot, but Akeno looked ecstatic. Her whole 'big sister' persona was gone today, and today she was a bubbly yet shy girl. I honestly didn't know which one was her real persona, but when she decides to tell me, I'll listen.
"(Y/N), what kind of fish is this?" Akeno has been asking me about the different kinds of fish and crabs since I'm kind of the expert on judging what's edible or not thanks to my experience from hunting for my own food.
"That's a mackerel, they're edible and pretty common." I explained, and I was explaining if they were edible or not because that's honestly all I know. "If I have to eat another one like it, it'll be too soon."
"I thought you weren't a picky eater?" Akeno pointed out as a large stingray shifted overhead.
"I ate nothing but fish for eleven years straight, I got sick of them." I answered whilst crossing my arms and watching the excitement in Akeno's eyes, there wasn't a hint of her usual mature aura in them. "I take it it feels good to let loose."
"It does, especially since I'm with you." Akeno still had her teasing habits, but they were more innocent compared to how she normally is. "Being with you always makes me feel as though I can do anything."
"Why do I get the feeling you copied that from a romantic comedy?" I asked, and Akeno giggled before leading me deeper into the aquarium.
The two of us entered the dark water exhibit, and I didn't know that much about the fish around us, since I've never gone into deep waters when I hunted. I saw
primarily jellyfish, drifting I in the pitch black waters they were in, glowing beautiful shades of various colors as they did so. The jellyfish also came in a variety of shapes, some were large and others were small. I have never saw jellyfish like these before, so I was rather fascinated with them. Akeno suddenly clasped onto my arm once again, and I wanted to know why. "Is everything alright?" I asked whilst tilting my head a bit.
"I want you to look at me like that?" Akeno put on a pouting face, and she smirked a bit before letting go of my arm. "Relax, I'm just teasing, I couldn't help myself."
To hide my embarrassed face, we began making our way to the deep water fish, such as angler fish and goblin sharks. Those were the only fish I can't actually recognize, but one thing I can tell about these fish is that most of them had incredibly sharp and large teeth. Oh wait, that's two. There was no flash photography allowed and the rooms were rather dark, and the tanks were barely visible, but Akeno and I can see just fine. On the other hand, the rest of ORC was following us close behind, clearly curious as to what we were doing. Well, Issei, Kiba, and Gasper didn't really appear to care. Issei was busy trying to make his face look like the fish while Kiba took pictures of his attempts. Gasper was hiding behind Kiba since he was scared of the deep sea fish, and I can see why. These fish honestly looked like they were the stuff of nightmares, maybe I can use a technique involving them.
"(Y/N), you're thinking about a new technique aren't you?" Akeno poked my cheek. "Today, you're only supposed to focus on me."
"My apologies, force of habit." I apologized by bowing down to the girl. "Say, don't you find these fish fascinating? They're a sign that in even a place without light, things can thrive."
"Like you?" Akeno asked, and she wasn't wrong. "You've lived alone for years and ate nothing but seafood you caught, taking care of a home without any purpose. Yet you've become one of the greatest people I know in spite of that. Scratch that. The greatest person."
"Please don't compliment me like that out of the blue." I still didn't know how to take compliments properly, so I turned a bit red and looked away from Akeno.
"Hey, I don't know about you, but how about we lose our little group of stalkers?" Akeno was referring to our friends that were following us, and before I could respond, Akeno grabbed onto my hand and began dragging me away.
I was curious as we began leaving the building, and the rest of ORC followed close behind, curious as to what we were doing. Once we exited the aquarium, Akeno picked up the pace, and following us close behind was the rest of ORC, and the boys were only there for the hell of it. I was amazed Akeno could run in those heels. Random bystanders were curious as to what on earth was going on, since a high school girl was dragging a giant along with her while a group of interesting individuals followed close behind. I even noticed some students around me, trying to process the situation. Akeno and I kept on running until Akeno suddenly turned a corner to hide from the others, and to my surprise, everyone passed on by. "Great, now let's enjoy the rest of the date without curious eyes-" Akeno suddenly flinched like she was in pain.
"Are you okay?" I asked, and I instantly looked at her feet, and one of her feet was red. "Those shoes appear to be cutting off circulation and are cutting into your foot, perhaps you should take them off and rest."
"Alright, let's head back to your place and just watch an old samurai film." Akeno suggested, and that sounded like a good idea, but when Akeno stepped forwards, she almost fell, and I had to catch her. "Oh my, it appears I can't walk that much right now."
"It's fine, how about we rest somewhere closeby?" I looked around, and the alleyway we arrived at was nothing but hotels, except these ones had more a pink and red 'intimate' aesthetic to them, so I had the feeling these were different. Still, a hotel is a hotel. "How about there."
"Do you even know what kind of hotel that is?" Akeno asked as I picked her up with what I believe is called a princess carry.
"A hotel?" I asked, I only knew of normal hotels, and I wonder if they'd allow us to just stay for a little while. "Are there different types of hotels?"
"You know what? That sounds like a good idea, let's rest for a bit."
I carried Akeno into the lobby of the first hotel, and the clerk looked at me carrying Akeno, and understandably asked some questions as to why I was carrying her. I answered all the questions truthfully, and the clerk appeared to glare at him, as if checking me for lies, before she handed me a key and told me the room numbers Akeno and I would be staying at. I opened the door using the key and instantly noticed the various rose petals scattered on the ground and on the bed, which had soft red blankets on it. I wanted to know what the deal was with these petals, and there were various candles lit up as well. Could this room be in the middle of a ritual? "Geez (Y/N), making love to a woman at noon?" I heard the voice as I set Akeno on the bed, since I didn't see a chair anywhere. "One of us is living life wrong, and it's not you."
"Eh? Making love?" I didn't know what that meant, and I turned around to face the source of the voice, who was none other than Odin, and with him was Rossweisse, and two other guys I didn't recognize. "Oh Nice to see you again, Odin, Rossweisse. However, what does 'making love' mean exactly?"
"Oh you don't know?" Odin then shook his head to dismiss some thoughts in his head. "Don't worry about it, you'll know later." Odin then gestured to the man with a jackal head. "Rossweisse and I had business in Japan, so on our way, we decided to give a ride to some people you sent for. (Y/N), this is Anubis."
"Honor to meet you young man." Anubis greeted me while shaking my hand. He wore professional black and white business attire, the only exception to this was the golden ankh he wore instead of a necktie. "I know you sent for Anansi, but he's...caught up at the moment, so I will be taking his place, that is if it's alright with you."
"I understand completely, it is an honor to work with you, Lord Anubis." I knew Anubis was a god, and one of the few professional ones I've seen so far. Dagda is an alcoholic, Cernunnos is too mysterious and despises being called 'lord', and I don't know Odin all that well. "By the way, I'm running a kind of testing program before recruiting anyone."
"I understand, and no need to add Lord to anything." Anubis waves his hand. "You have a light heart, and that's a rare trait amongst anyone. So I will follow you to the ends of the world." Anubis informed me, then he got a phone call. "God damnit, I swear those monkeys have no idea how to use a scale."
"Oh, there he goes again." Odin chuckled as he watched Anubis walk towards the corner of the room professionally, and answered the phone like a busy businessman. "Anubis is the main guy in charge of weighing the scales of judgement where he's from, weighing people's hearts and all that. He started hiring new people to take his place so he has some free time, but they always have questions."
"..Y-You...What are you doing here?" Akeno was looking at Odin's second companion, who appeared to know Akeno on a personal level.
"Akeno, what is the meaning of this?" The man asked while walking towards Akeno and I.
"That's none of your business, so leave!" Akeno got genuinely mad, and was holding nothing back, something I never saw before. "Why are you here in the first place?"
"It doesn't matter, but we are leaving right now!" The man grabbed onto Akeno's arm, causing her to turn red with nothing but pure rage.
"I'm not going anywhere, so let me go!" Akeno demanded, and in response to this, I removed the man's hand from Akeno's wrist and got between the two. "(Y/N)?"
"Pardon me sir, but if Akeno says she's not going anywhere." I then gestured to her foot, which no longer had the heels on. "Her heels dug into her foot, so even if she wanted to go with you, moving on her own two legs is going to be hard."
"Her foot is hurt by wearing heels?" The man looked at her foot, and understood right away. "So you only came here to let Akeno rest? You are aware this is a love hotel, yes?"
"What is a love hotel?" I wondered out loud, and no one wanted to answer that question. "Okay...what about you sir? Who are you?"
"I am Baraqiel, a fallen angel and current escort of Odin." The newly dubbed Baraqiel introduced himself. "I am also Akeno's father."
Huh, so this is the guy that Akeno hates? I honestly thought he'd be more like Azazel.
(A/N: I wanted to use this chapter to show off the fact that some things never change, like (Y/N)'s still something of an innocent airhead even after all that. The reason he doesn't know what a love hotel is because it's not all that useful for him to know.
