Chapter 5: Rainy Night
(Your POV)
After we explained everything to Rias, she insisted I be teleported along with Issei back to the clubroom, but that would mean Asia is left behind. So I insisted on taking Asia to my house to better protect her, since Freed obviously wasn't alone in this operation. I was also out of ammo and under equipped for this mission, so I need to run back home and resupply. Plus it may not look like it, but my lighthouse is sturdy enough to last against the worst the sea has to offer, so it should be safe enough to protect Asia for a while. As if that wasn't enough, there's a storm tonight, so flying around my house is close to impossible, and there's only one landbridge to connect my piece of land to the rest of Kuoh, it was the perfect place for a siege from fallen angels, other than the fact that it was made of wood and stone. With that in mind, Asia and I were currently at my house, and I was explaining why I became a devil to Asia, in hopes that she will understand.
"...and that's why I am a devil." I finished my explanation as I kneeled at the coffee table while Asia say on the couch with a tea cup in her hands. "I understand if you would like to leave right away, but I must guarantee your safety before letting you leave."
"Thank you for explaining yourself, but instead of seeking a master, it just sounds to me that you're scared of being alone." Asia stated, and she wasn't exactly wrong. "You constantly seek the validation of others and act like a slave just for approval."
"You're spot on, but that's just who I am, so I apologize if this irritates you in any way." I bowed slightly, before changing the subject, what I feel is not important. "How is the tea?"
"It's fine, but back on the original subject, is there any chance you can stop throwing yourself at the danger?" Asia requested, I was never any good at socializing, and I can't rely on Issei because even though he's staying the night, he's currently taking a shower.
"I deserve it, plain and simple." I didn't flinch as I answered the question, but Asia looked shocked that I would say such a thing. "I was a son my mother never wanted to have, and the reason why my father no longer comes here."
"No one deserves to go through pain." Asia gets up from the couch and sits right beside me. "If you don't mind, what do you mean by 'why your father no longer comes here'?"
"He's the captain of a ship, and he's pretty much going all over the world making deliveries, so he's never here anymore." I explained before slowly standing up and walking towards a small shelf. "However, he sends me keychains of places he's at on my birthday."
"That's good, I think he does care about you." Asia seemed happy, and I'm not too sure if what she's saying is correct or not. On one hand, he knows I exist, on the other, he's never stopped by the house.
"Yeah, here are the keychains." I pulled out a small box and planted them on the table, allowing Asia to take a look at them.
"(Y/N), you are aware some of these places are landlocked, right?" Asia showed me the postcard from Oklahoma. "Why is the captain of a ship going to landlocked places, and why does he send you keychains?"
"I just collect keychains is all." I answered shortly before shaking my head, I know my father's story, and I need to stop asking questions. "As for why my father is in landlocked areas, I don't know and I do not with to know."
"(Y/N), when was the last time you met your father?" Asia asked a question I don't want to answer, but I must be honest.
"I have never met him nor have I received any letters from him, just keychains." I answered, and I remembered another fact. "All his letters are addressed to my mother, who left long ago, so it's safe to assume he doesn't know she left."
"(Y/N), do you ever think he doesn't care about you and only sends letters to your mother?" Asia asked a new question, and one that I've considered for a long time.
"I believe so, but I don't wish to tell him in case he cuts all contact with me entirely." I didn't want to ruin what very little contact I had with my father. "Is there any chance we can change the subject? I'd prefer it if we didn't speak of my family."
"Oh, of course, I'm sorry." Asia apologized slightly nervously, I hope I didn't make her feel uncomfortable. "Thank you for letting me stay here."
"Of course, you were in trouble, and I did what any self-respecting person would do." I explained before feeling my phone vibrate, meaning either the cookies are done or someone is calling me. "What's that?"
"I put on some cookies earlier to help make you and Issei feel more welcome." I informed the nun before standing up. "Like I told you both earlier, feel free to request anything you need."
"Thank you, but you don't have to go through so much effort for us." Asia thanked me, but I insisted it was my duty as a host to ensure the comfort of his guests.
I walked into the kitchen and put on an oven mitt before pulling out the hot tray of cookies. I set the tray on the stove and took off the oven mitt before my eyes focused on the window in the kitchen. Outside I caught quick glimpses of the sea thanks to the lighthouse light I turned on tonight. I was stuck in a trance thanks to the sound of the crashing waves against the shore, raindrops against the window, and the smell of the sea air filling my house. Apparently this was a trait I got from my mother, always staring out at the sea no matter how many times I see it daily.
"Hey, (Y/N)!" I turned my attention to my friend, who was wearing some clothes he accidently forgot about the last time he spent the night here for a group project. "You okay man?"
"Of course, I'm perfectly fine." I answered whilst snapping out of my trance. "Forgive me for being rude, but I hope you will take your clothes back with you home tomorrow."
"I will, but are you sure Asia can stay with you?" Issei asked, and I will admit, there's not a whole lot of space here. "I can take her to my place, we have a guest room and all."
"Asia can sleep in my bed, and I'll sleep on the couch, so it's no issue." I answered bluntly. "Not only is my location pretty much immune to sneak attacks, I have weapons should they try to attack. Plus you might try something if Asia was to go with you."
"That's fair, wait, where am I going to sleep?" Issei asked, and I realized I forgot about him.
"You can have the couch, I'll sleep somewhere else." I informed my perverted friend, but he didn't seem convinced. "It's getting late, so you can go ahead and go to sleep, I still have business to take care of."
"If you're sure about that man." Issei and I walked towards the living room but parted so I could climb up the ladder and grab a plastic bag like the kind you'd get at a supermarket. "What's that?"
"Something I need to do what I need to do." I walked towards the front door, ignoring the rain. "I'll be back in a bit. Issei, don't do anything to Asia. Asia, get some rest and sweet dreams."
(Timeskip, brought to you by Issei looking through one of the crates and pulling out a LMG complete with ammo, then slowly putting the gun away.)
I arrived at my location, the old church.
There was no rain over here because the oceanside was wilder weather than the rest of Kuoh, and I was grateful for that because I didn't want the rain to wash away any of the gasoline I'm spraying around the church walls. I made sure I was quiet and hid in the shadows to ensure no one found out of my scheme. I saw some exorcists walking in and out of the church, but I managed to hide away in the bushes before they could find me. As for where I got the gas, it's important the lighthouse always has a source of power, so I have excess amounts of fuel in case there's a blackout and I need to use a generator.
I kept on spraying the gasoline around the church until I ran out of fuel, so I tossed the container away and grabbed another container of gasoline. I noticed a small hole in the ground next to the church and looked into it to see an entire underground chamber under the church. So I dumped all of the gasoline down the hole and threw the container to the side. I reached into the plastic bag and pulled out three thermite grenades. I pulled the pin and dropped it down the hole. I then threw the other two through the stained glass windows of the church. There was a moment of silence before all of the thermites went off in an explosion of fire.
"May the tides of life be in your favor in the future."
All of the gasoline was ignited and not only was the church set ablaze, but the underground chamber was quickly becoming filled with smoke. I took quick notice of the flashes of red and blue heading towards me along with the sound of police sirens. I grabbed the gas containers and plastic bag before running away towards a nearby river. I made sure I wore my wetsuit underneath my parka, and that I had my parka's hood up. I know I may have seemed suspicious, but the fleeing exorcists should be enough to distract the police officers long enough for me to make it towards the river.
I reached the river without running into police officers, probably helped that it was nighttime and there was a new moon. To ensure I don't get caught walking home, I jumped into the river, which was about a meter deep. I made sure to swim with the current, and I knew this river led to the gulf where my lighthouse was. It wasn't the first time I traveled by river like this, but it's the first time I've used it to stealthily hide away from the cops. I didn't have to worry too much about drowning, since I can still hold my breath for 45 minutes, and possibly even longer.
I just had to go with the flow and sure enough, the water on my lips began to feel salty after a couple of minutes. Upon tasting the salty water, I shot my head out of the water and breathed, noticing that the lighthouse was still in one piece and that it was raining. I was grateful I left my phone at home, and that I lived in a lighthouse, which is pretty hard to miss even in the rain. I swam back towards the rocks next to my home and grasped the nearest rock to pull myself up. I climbed out of the water and onto the rocks before my feet planted firmly on the ground around my home. There weren't any lights on, so I assumed Issei and Asia were asleep.
"I suppose there's no harm in keeping an eye out."
I walked towards the entrance of the lighthouse and opened it, revealing a staircase that spiraled upwards. As I walked up the steps, I made sure to squint my eyes so I wouldn't become blind thanks to the absurd brightness of the light at the top of the tower. Once I reached the top, I leaned over the railing and looked at the only piece of land connecting my property to the rest of Kuoh. I had my Desert Eagle in hand, ready to shoot.
I know those fallen angels are going to be coming after me now that I destroyed their base of operations, but if it directs their attention to me and away from everyone else, then I'd be worth it. Just think about it, I'm the most disposable piece in the entire peerage. I know I pretty much requested to serve someone, but now that I think about it, I'm pretty worthless. Issei's newer than me and he possesses a legendary sacred gear, and what do I have to offer? Just a couple guns?
If I'm useful, then they won't leave me behind, but how can I make myself more useful?
(Timeskip, brought to you by Raynare, Kalawarner, Mittlet, and Dohnaseek coming back to the church from a fast food place to see it in flames and police officers are arresting everyone)
Apparently, I stayed atop the lighthouse, keeping watch, all night and didn't sleep a wink. Normally, I would be fine, but thanks to the events of yesterday, I was exhausted. I was sitting on one of the ORC club room couches with my arms crossed, struggling to keep myself awake while Rias seemed to be recruiting Asia into the peerage like Issei and I were recruited. I was nodding off, struggling to stay awake and the fact that Akeno was sitting next to me, shoulder to shoulder mind you, and she was rather warm. My arms were crossed, and Akeno's head was on my shoulder for some reason, but I just let it slide because it didn't hurt anyone.
"Congratulations Asia, you're officially one of us now." Rias congratulated, and Asia seemed surprisingly happy for someone who was originally a nun, but I'm not one to judge. "I'll ask Sona to enroll you into Kuoh Academy, but you're free to relax with us here."
"Not sure if we should be happy for her or not, but whatevs." I clapped my hands, careful not to move my shoulder too much. "So what are we gonna do now?"
"Well now we're gonna discuss the next order of business, someone burned down the church." Rias announced in the room, and the two newest members in the room looked shocked. "Strangest of all, it was last night and quite a bit of exorcists got arrested because someone gave an anonymous tip of a cult meeting there."
"(Y/N)." Issei pointed at me, guess it was obvious.
"Yep, that was me." I'm a terrible liar, so I didn't even bother lying. "I didn't want to risk the potential counter attack from the church after I killed Freed. I decided to not only burn their base of operations, but also get the members arrested so our enemies have less soldiers."
"My my, (Y/N), how underhanded~" Akeno teased me, but I did what I had to and I have no regrets. "I didn't know you liked to play dirty~"
"Speaking of which, are you feeling alright, (Y/N)?" Kiba asked, causing me to tilt my head. "Normally, people would feel traumatized or regretful for killing someone. So how do you feel?"
"Heavier, I feel heavier." I answered bluntly, and this confused everyone. "I feel like something's constantly pulling me down and weighing me down at all times."
"Maybe you've put on weight." Koneko guessed, but I noticed a slightly worried look on Rias' face.
"I won't deny the possibility." I guessed but then Rias grabbed my right leg and began feeling it for something, this weirded me out for many reasons. "Lady Rias, may I ask what you're doing."
"(Y/N), before you try killing anyone, do you hear something singing?" Rias asked, with concern and fear filling her voice.
"Indeed, how did you know?" I answered, and I saw some color begin leaving Rias' face. "Is something wrong."
"(Y/N), I think you're cursed." Rias says, making the room go completely silent. "My father warned me of this curse, called 'A Sin's Weight'."
"As long as nobody else is cursed, it's fine." I commented, and I noticed a slight pout on Rias' face. "Still, have you any idea as to remove it, or what it does?"
"What it does is simple." Rias touched a part of my leg and the sound of chains could be heard, making her pick up something invisible. "All your sins will manifest as invisible chains and weights, and the song was a warning."
"I have a feeling I may know who cursed me..." I thought of my mother, she never did like me, I was a bastard for gods' sake. "I'm certain we can not ask her, so is there a way to remove it without the person who put it on me?"
"I don't know, I was just warned about how to avoid it." Rias crossed her arms before standing up. "However, the only way to get this curse was to listen to the cursed song of a singing race, like sirens, mermaids, and so on. So is there something you're hiding from us?"
"On second thought, I can live with this." I stood up quickly and grabbed the chain and began feeling around it. "I don't wish to trouble you, and I'll be fine no matter what happens."
"No you can't live like this, you need help!" Rias argued, I didn't like seeing anyone mad like this, I thought taking on all of my master's burdens would make them happy. "Please, just take care of yourself, and I'll see if Sona is available."
"Are you sure?" I asked my king, who looked extremely concerned. "I don't want to be a burden."
"Don't worry (Y/N), you're not a burden and never have been." Rias reassured before gently pushing me back onto the couch, where Akeno hugging my arm. "You're my piece, and I care about you more than you could ever imagine..."
"Ara, trying to get one up on me?" Akeno smirked as she teased our master.
"N-No!" Rias blushed, doing a great job at hiding her feelings. "It's just a master's job to care about their pieces."
"So you guys forgot I'm a player too huh?" Koneko said from the other couch.
(A/N: I know it looks like I'm picking favorites when it comes to fanfic writing, but in my defense, my DxD, DAL, and RWBY books are relaxing to write about. Plus I wanna get this book caught up to at least the excalibur arc. By the way, I've got exams coming up and I'm pretty sure most of you guys do too, so I'm gonna take a two week break from fanfic writing, but when I'm back, I'll release everything I may or may not have written on my free time.
