Chapter 49: Interview
(Your POV)
Today was the day we were going to be on television, and I was rather nervous. I was in front of a mirror, practicing on smiling by placing my fingertips on the side of my mouth. I wanted to be able to not only smile on command, but also make it a smile that suited me, like the way Rias does. For some reason though, they wanted me to wear a military uniform, but I didn't have one. Luckily, my father was actually in the military before he had me, and still had his uniform, that would explain his usage of guns. Due to our size difference, we had to ask Unohanna to modify it a bit, but in the end, it was worth it. The uniform consisted of baggy, dark green camouflage pants tucked into black military boots, and on the top was an ocado camouflage, long sleeve, collared shirt. I had the sleeves rolled up to show my forearms since it looked nicer. On the right shoulder used to be a flag of (country name), where my father served and some other military stuff I didn't understand. Now it's barren and empty, just like the opposite sleeve. Despite its ordinary design, I liked it. It was light, worked as camouflage in case I end up getting in over my head. The only real oddity was my jester's mask on my side, and it's there so I won't have to waste magic energy into my eyes. I was so distracted with my task that I didn't even notice Rias in the mirror until she wrapped her arms around my neck and kissed me on the cheek, causing me to blush a bit.
"(Y/N), you're so tense, are you that nervous about appearing on television?" Like her mother, Rias seemed to be able to read my mind.
"Among other things..." I was primarily worried about Asia, so much so that I ordered an AK-12 from one of Mukuro's contacts. "I hope I don't ruin your reputation in any form."
"Don't worry about ruining anything (Y/N), I'm sure you'll do just fine." Rias tried easing my stress before suddenly stroking my head, and I would have been against it, but it was nice. "You'll probably be asked some questions about your peerage, military affairs, and tested for your leadership abilities. You'll do fine, just answer honestly like you always do."
"Maybe I should wear my mask, I can't smile on command like you do." I was about to put on my jester's mask, but Rias stopped me.
"Stop it, while you can't smile on command, there are things that will make you attractive." Rias then began listing things off. "First off, your eyes, they're a beautiful (e/c) color and always show compassion, even when you are looking at someone you hate. Second off, you arms, while they may be large, but you're always focusing on the kinds of hugs they could give. Third of all, you have this sort of charm that changes, sometimes it makes you cuter, and sometimes it makes you give off the same energy as a king. The list goes on, do I need to continue?"
"N-No..." I wasn't used to compliments, and while it did feel nice, it was a bit much for me, and I could feel Rias tighten her embrace around me.
"I can also tell you're worried about Asia, so much so that you've even started writing to people who have sent letters to you." Rias was quite observant, there were some letters on my desk addressed to some people who wanted to join my Peerage. "You never really ask anyone else for help, so seeing this is quite a surprise."
"I don't know what to do." I decided to be honest, and from looking into the mirror, I could see Rias's concerned expression. "I want to not only protect Asia, but make her happy as well. Diodora is able to teleport in here without so much as a warning, so I don't know what to do to counter that."
"Relax (Y/N), your parents, Dagda, and Azazel are taking care of that, so you can just focus on other things." Rias then tapped the tip of my nose with her finger. "Like making yourself happy and not just focusing on everyone else."
"I'll try."
After I got ready, Rias and I went with the rest of Rias' peerage to a magic circle that Rias drew in her room. In a flash of crimson light, we were transported to a studio that was in the underworld. Wait, why didn't we just do that last time instead of taking the train?! Now that I think about it, Rias can be needlessly over dramatic at times, but I still respect her. When we arrived at the place, we were met with the producer. The producer looked pretty stereotypical, black hair, tie, glasses, suit, and a clipboard. He guided us down a hallway, allowing me to look around the area. The area looked modern enough, but I could tell most of the technology and equipment was run on magic energy. As we walked, we were later met by an unexpected person, and the only person to even come close to reaching my height, Sairaorg. Behind him was a group of people, whom I assumed was his peerage.
"Hey guys, I'm guessing you guys are getting interviewed today as well?" Sairaorg appeared to be an agreeable person, unlike Diodora or Zephyrdor.
"Yes we are, did you just finish your interview?" Rias asked, and I wasn't entirely sure if they were on good terms or not, Rias could be an amazing actress when she wants to be.
"Yeah, and man I'm beat." Sairaorg was tired of interviews, not that I blame him, I'm already dreading it. "Say, I saw your rating game against Sona, and I just wanted to get this out of the way, I wanna fight Issei and (Y/N) head to head."
"Eh?" Issei wasn't excited, instead, he looked absolutely horrified at the idea of fighting Sairaorg.
"I accept your challenge with my heart and soul." I'm a dirty fighter who utilizes guerrilla warfare and bar fight tactics, but I'm confident in my endurance and skill with Gae Bulg.
"Great, I look forward to our fight, you guys." Sairaorg seemed happy and a hand on either of our shoulders, and despite it being a tap, his hand felt heavy, even by my standards.
With that said, Sairaorg left and his peerage followed closely behind. Taking Sairaorg on in head to head combat is a bad idea for me, but not bad for Issei. Even if Sairaorg gets the advantage, I can use my druidry and ocean magic to alter the train however I see fit, giving everyone whatever advantage they need. Wait a minute, if Druidry gives me control over plants, can't I use it to create a kind of necromancy magic, necrobotany? Where I combine Druidic magic with necromancy to get zombies combined with plants and possibly giving them new abilities and/or features in the process? My thoughts were interrupted by Issei tugging my shirt to point at a poster of Rias, not wearing her school uniform, but a kind of idol costume, complete with frills and such. I took a picture of it for no reason before continuing to follow Rias to the studio where our interviews would be taking place. The producer opened the door and we went into the studio. It kind of reminded me of that show Natalia hates/mocks all the time, Ellen. There was a stage with two couches, one for the host and one for the guest, a decorative table, several decorations, and many seats for the audience to sit. So it appears that we will be watched by an audience, a way to add to my anxiety. "I-I-I-I w-wanna g-go h-home." Gasper was visibly scared of this, so I pat the boy on the head, I always kind of saw him as a younger brother.
"Fear not Gasper, nothing bad will happen to you here, and if something does happen, I can handle them." I gave him a thumbs up, which was kind of 'lame' according to Natalia, but works for me.
"Alright, time to do a roll call..." A staff member walked towards us, his uniform consisted of a collared shirt, black pants, shoes, and a cap that prevented me from seeing his face, but he looked to be Native American, and looked to have something under his cap. "Akeno Himejima, Yuto Kiba, and...(Y/N) (L/N)?" The man looked up to look at me when he said my name, and I could see the eyes of a coyote.
"Right here." Akeno, Kiba, and I answered in sync, and Issei looked slightly insulted that he wasn't called up.
"Great, you three have the largest fan base, so expect a lot of questions." The staff member was holding a clipboard, most likely a schedule. "Kiba is popular with the female viewers, Akeno is popular with the male viewers, and (Y/N) is popular with low-class devils, veterans, scientists, and a truly staggering amount of gods and people from folklore around the world." I'm not sure why, but I felt slightly mad when he said that Akeno was popular with the male fans.
"Don't worry (Y/N)." Akeno smiled whilst grabbing my hand, she must have noticed my mood change, "I only have eyes for you, so I won't leave you."
"Oh, almost forgot, apparently Issei Hyoudou is popular..." The staff member was looking through his clipboard, trying to finish his sentence.
"Right here!" Issei held his hand up, and everyone in the staff didn't believe him, and he had to take out his gauntlet to prove it. "Why is that so hard to believe?"
"Well your armor gives off a strong impression, so we never would have expected you to look like...that." The staff member pointed out, and I had to hold Issei back by the collar to prevent him from punching the staff member. "Now that I think about it, you're kind of (Y/N)'s rival or partner. The King of Hope and Oppai Dragon."
"What?" Issei told me that name as a joke one time, so how did these people know about it?
"Yeah Issei is known as the Oppai Dragon, and he's really popular with children." The staff continued, and I noticed Issei was holding in laughter while looking slightly guilty. "They even have plushies for you, and children started saying 'Oppai' as a kind of saying because you kept shouting it in your fight against Sona."
"Well well well, if it isn't the consequences of your actions." Koneko crossed her arms while glaring at Issei.
"If it helps, the people started calling (Y/N) Sealboi or Commander Sealboi, and they even have plushies of him in his seal form holding that shield and anchor of his." The staff went on. "While he's not as popular as Issei is, children still seem to look up to him."
"Thanks but reconsider."
"Moving on, all of you will be taking turns for the interview, so the order will be Rias, Kiba, Akeno, (Y/N), Asia, Xenovia, Koneko, Gasper, and finally Issei." The staff explained. "Issei will be doing another video elsewhere, since kids don't really watch these kinds of interviews. The rest of you can wait in the changing room, we'll call you out one by one."
With that said, all of us went to the changing rooms to relax. While there were spare clothes all around us on hanging racks, all of us were primarily lounging on the couch. Well, except for Issei, he was handed a script in the studio and escorted to a different studio. I was sitting between Koneko and Xenovia, not really doing anything until it was my turn. While leaving the room, I looked at the mirror and fixed my collar, redid my sleeves, made sure my pants were tucked in, and overall, just made sure I looked professional. After that, I followed the staff until we reached the studio's backstage. From there, I walked in the direction that the staff ordered when I was on the stage, and I could feel all the lights and everyone's eyes on me. I wanted to turn invisible, but Rias, Kiba, and Akeno all did the exact same thing without invisibility, so I continued towards the center of the stage, where the host was waiting for me. The host appeared to be a respectfully dressed woman in her mid 30's, but unlike Ellen, this one appeared to be somewhat respectable. I made sure to scan her with my robotic eyes, and her magic power was even lower than Issei's. I turned my attention to the crowd, and there were a couple girls with Kiba-related accessories, a couple boys wearing Akeno-related accessories, some children holding onto plushies that resembled Issei's balance breaker, and some normal looking people wearing shirts of an arctic seal in an sideways C shape holding onto a knife. The men who appeared to be Akeno fans glared at me out of envy, I guess she must have talked about me, but the moment I looked at them, they lowered their heads. Am I really that scary? I really liked the seal shirts, the seal was a nice design, maybe I should make that my new emblem. "(Y/N) (L/N), we're so glad you could make it onto our show." The woman introduced herself as Aloi before shaking my hand.
"It's nice of you to invite us here." I decided to act like I wanted to be here, and the two of us sat down in sync. "Do I need to do introductions or is that already out of the way?"
"We did a kind of introduction before you came here." Aloi explained, and I was grateful for that. "Do you know about your fan base? It consists of veterans, scientists, low class devils, gods, and even some humans who call you 'seal boi'."
"I like the name." I commented, the name was indeed random, but it was simple and got the point across.
"You know, people speculate you could take on the Oppai Dragon and win." Aloi started the questions. "Do you believe that? Even though you're not from a powerful race or possess a sacred gear."
"I don't like boasting about my strength, but in his current state, Issei will lose if we fight seriously." I sighed, I hated belittling him. "However, he possesses more potential than I do, and one day, he will most likely surpass me. So I'm doing my best to not get left behind."
"That's quite a bold statement, in a world where people believe power and destiny is decided at birth, you're living proof that those people are wrong." Aloi continued. "Many people respect you for that, and even wish to join your peerage, so what is your response to that?"
"I don't have any evil pieces yet." Was my response, and there was some murmuring in the audience. "Either way, I am honored that there are people who respect me. I don't have a sacred gear or anything fancy like my friends do, all I can really do is turn into a seal."
"Speaking of sacred gears, there are rumors that you're working on forging a sacred gear." On the screen behind us, that was originally displaying a rook piece, I could see a post on Azazel's social media. It is a selfie of himself trying to be 'hip' or whatever, with me in the background working on a model for what I want the sacred gear to look like. "If you want a sacred gear, why don't you steal one? It would be easier."
At the bottom of the post, there was a text saying "Working on making a sacred gear with my new student. #sacredgearbros." For the record, I sweatdropped when I saw this.
"If I stole someone's sacred gear, then I would be stealing their strength, and I don't want to do that." I crossed my arms. "Besides, if I stole their sacred gear, then I'd be no different than people who think sacred gears mean everything. I want to show the world that sacred gears aren't everything, and with the right resources you could make one yourself."
"So what resources are you currently using?" Aloi asked, not like any of this was a secret.
"I'm using some body parts from a couple gods and a powerful deity." I then clarified what I meant. "Keep in mind, it's only hair, a feather, and a tooth. Nothing major like an arm or anything. Of course, these fall under the 'raw magic' category, like the green gem on Issei's boosted gear, so I need something to make that power usable, otherwise it'd be impossible to use and very unstable. Right now, I'm using steel for that."
"Well we here wish you luck in making that sacred gear." Aloi then moved onto another subject. "People are always wondering how you come up with new magic, techniques, and equipment, like how you were able to make clones of yourself out of mist, make elemental bullets, and landmines that home in on opponents?"
"I learned new things, like knitting, chemistry, baking, and so on, then I combined those skills with magic to get what you see now." I then made both my palms face upwards before I created a small fern in one and a sphere of water in the other. "My only real magic that isn't based on a skill are my druidry and ocean magic, neither of which really excel at much but they're versatile."
"Looks like we're almost out of time (Y/N), do you have anything to say to the audience?" Aloi asked, and I had to think for a little bit, but then I came up with something.
"There is a future you want, and a destiny that you can't change. You fight and fight with everything you have, you gain things and you lose things. There is nothing one can do to change that." I noticed some people who appeared to be my supporters looked depressed. "So what?" Everyone's attention was on me. "Did destiny ask what you wanted? One alone can not defy destiny, but you're not alone. Never be afraid to ask for the support of your fellow man and woman. Do this, and one day your dreams will become reality no matter what destiny says. Reject your fate, screw destiny.
With that, I left the stage to the sound of clapping.
I hope I did well.
(A/N: You know, I started reading the light novel recently and it's kind of hard to follow because the author doesn't really describe what the side characters look like, but my mama didn't raise a little bitch so I'm sticking to it. With that out of the way, I was thinking about giving our seal boi a theme. Keep in mind, his theme is going to be instrumental to fit with his aesthetic and would make sense if it was in the anime, which appears to use renaissance/baroque style music. So I'm probably going to make (Y/N)'s theme Celtic and/or old Irish music, since Dagda is an Irish Celtic god and (Y/N) is canonically half Irish. So when I'm picking a theme, I'm not just going to pick a random rock song I like, because that would make almost zero sense, given the musical aesthetic of the series.
