Chapter 44: Calling Home (Fixed)

(Your POV)
Today was the official day of the rating game between Sona and Rias, and I was not allowed to fight in it because they were scared I might accidentally kill someone. A precaution I was understandable of. I was surrounded by devils who didn't know who I was, nor did I know who they were. I didn't really care though, I was on a balcony looking over the arena they were fighting in, which was absolutely massive in my opinion. It was a perfect replica of the mall, complete with perfect items from it. Like donuts and those magazines Issei likes. Right off the bat, Gasper put on a pair of glasses, which are said to help him with his powers. Issei also started reading porn mags while everyone I didn't mention began making preparations for the fight ahead, mainly by planning ahead. I sighed before pulling out my phone, the fight wasn't going to start until much later, so I decided to check up on my friends. One problem though, I don't have many friends. The only people on my contacts list, who weren't devils or part of the supernatural, were Asger, Natalia, Ayako, Nico, Unohanna, and Onihime. The last four were for a project that involved dynamite, dead frogs, gift wrapping, and patchwork. The entire talented course agreed to call us the nightmare combo because out of everyone there, the five of us were the best at spreading chaos or nonsense. Still, I'm not sure if I'll end up annoying them if I call them. Should I try calling my classmates? No, I don't want to annoy them. What about my parents? They might be busy with their jobs, since Natalia is a lawyer and Asger a delivery man for fish. Before I could give it more thought, my phone began ringing, and it was one of those calls where you could see the person's face. I got nervous because I never really talked to people much, but I accepted nonetheless.

I realize that most people don't know who Unohanna is, so allow me to explain who she is. She's known as the Ultimate Knitter, and is pretty much the big sister of our class. She's even tied with Rias through the entire school for who has the most 'big sister energy'. I accepted the call and saw Unohanna. Her long hair was white, but turned a light hazel along the ends. It was down for now, but usually she wore it in one of those buns with chopsticks in them, except instead of chopsticks, they were knitting needles. She only really undid her hair when she was knitting so she could use the needles. Her skin was pretty pale, being roughly the same shade of white as snow, but her eyes were a rather warm brown color. She was also incredibly frail, being born with some kind of disease, this also forced her to miss a lot of school. From what I heard, it isn't life threatening, so we don't need to worry too much about it. When I accepted her call, she was wearing a soft pink sweater made from wool with Onihime behind her wearing a black tank top. Given the background, she was most likely calling me from Onihime's room.

"Hey (Y/N), it's been too long since we've seen each other." Unohanna was one of the few people who talked to me, so I'd say we were on good terms. "How have you been?"

"Yo (Y/N)!" Onihime waved to me from the background, and I waved back. "We are having a sleepover, no boys allowed though."

"Correction, we did try to invite him so he won't feel left out, he just wasn't home." Ayako was the no BS girl we all knew and loved. "Speaking of which, where you, (Y/N)?"

"I'm at a stadium." I gave a vague answer, since these girls don't know about the supernatural. "So why did you call me, Unohanna?"

"We were playing truth or dare, and Onihime dared Nico to call Kiba, one problem though, Nico doesn't have Kiba's phone number." Unohanna informed me, and that is indeed a troublesome situation. "You're the only boy we really know, so we figured to just call you."

"I still want Gasper's phone number!" Onihime pumped her fist into the air, the only problem was that Gasper didn't have a phone, much less a number for her to contact him.

"ONIHIME, THESE AREN'T CHOCOLATE CHIP!" Nico's voice shouted, and I heard what sounded to be a plastic bag. "THESE...ARE RAISIN! WHO LIKES RAISIN?!"

"My sister does." Onihime explained, and she did indeed have a sister, and she will be attending Kuoh's talented course next year, I forgot what her talent was though. "You can't live on nothing but cookies and milk, Nico, that's unhealthy."

"The fact you're still functioning properly even after eating nothing but cookies and milk all your life is nothing short of a miracle." Ayako pointed out, and I wondered if Nico had sacred gear, she could qualify as a mythical creature. "By my estimate, you'll die in a couple days."

"SHUT THE HELL UP AYAKO, I'm gonna live forever!" Nico flopped onto the bed, revealing that she was wearing a santa patterned pajamas. "I'm just kidding girl, you know I love you."

"You need professional help."

"What I need are cookies that aren't raisin."

"You guys would have invited me?" I was surprised, we didn't talk much until recently, so why would they invite me. "I thought you guys only talked to me because of the project."

"To be fair, you constantly radiated a 'don't f with me' energy until you started hanging out with a Rias and them." Unohanna pointed out. "Nowadays, you're more expressive, so you're much more approachable, and it's all thanks to ORC."

"But if any of those girls hurt you, I'll be throwing hands." Onihime cracked her knuckles, and I saw Ayako pull out a knife. "See? Ayako's got my back and she don't fuck around."

"Unohanna, where are the cookies?" A small boy who looked like Unohanna somewhat entered the room, and what I found odd about him was the fact he was wearing a blue cape over his casual clothes, like a superhero. "Who's that?"

"It's (Y/N), you know, that giant boy we had over that one time." Unohanna reminded him as the boy grabbed the cookies from Nico and left. "Hey (Y/N), you're not going to believe this, but my little brother is going to be in the talented course next year, he's going to be the Ultimate Hero, he's also friends with Onihime's little sister."

"Good for him." I commented, but then I had an idea, why not give the boosted gear to him should a Rias and I reject the idea of becoming the next Red Dragon. "Hey Unohanna, how would you react when he actually wakes up one day to be the 'chosen one' or something like that and suddenly becomes like one of those superheroes?"

"I like to think everyone is the chosen one for something, like I am the chosen one for knitting, you're the chosen one for protecting, and so on." Unohanna was optimistic as usual. "But if he actually becomes like those anime protagonists and has to fight against strong people, then I'll help him."

"Are you sure?" I asked, I was getting an idea. "You and your brother have been through a lot, and even have the scars to prove it? Are you sure you want to do something like that again."

"Back then we were alone, and we couldn't trust each other for fear of getting stabbed in the back." Unohanna recalled. "Now things are different, we can trust each other full heartedly, and we have you, the Ultimate Immortal. If something like that happens, I'll be sure to let you know."

"Thank you..." I felt like a piece of crap now, she trusts me even though I've been keeping something this big a secret. "By the way, how do you guys put up with siblings?"

"WHAT?!" Nico shouted as she looked at the camera with amazement. "Your father brought home a supermodel mom who just happened to be a bratty younger sibling like Unohanna's brother sister, a cool onee-san like Ayako's family, or all of the above like Onihime's?! Who's family is your family becoming?!"

"It's more like this little sister is trying to kill us..."

"It's becoming like Nico's family, gotcha." Ayako yawned as she examined a rabbit plushie. "If I were you, just kill them."

"That seems a bit extreme, but given how she's trying to kill you, I'd say it was acceptable." Onihime decided to change the subject. "Hey (Y/N), you look like you're hiding something."

"I'll tell you guys in due time, in the meantime however, I need you girls to get me a list of people in exchange." I decided I will start planning for my peerage. "I need you to gather a list of every person in the talented course who managed to get over their trauma, and not just the talented course. I mean people from all grades, college and elementary who were either selected or graduated from the talented course."

"Alright then, but after we give you the list, you want a proper explanation." Onihime demanded, and then then she waved goodbye with the rest of the girls I could see, followed shortly by the call ending.

The trauma ran deep for other Ultimates, and I consider myself lucky to be one of the few to not have gone through what they have. Even if I do recruit those who got over their trauma, I have to be careful not to push them too hard. It would be better for me to back them up by recruiting other people to protect them should their traumas kick in, possibly causing flashbacks. Now that I think about it, I'll have to travel the world in order to meet most of them. Do I even have enough money to do that? Besides, I have studies to take care of, so I can't just leave, I would like to graduate high school fair and square. While I was thinking, I got another call, this time from my father. I answered the video call to see Asger wearing a dark blue plaid shirt and Natalia wearing a light brown wool cardigan over a yellow shirt. Asger's beard was slightly shorter, and Natalia still had her glasses on.

"(Y/N), is this thing on, can you hear me?" Asger asked, checking to make sure the phone was properly displaying everything, and I confirmed that it was. "Ah Good. It's very good to see you again (Y/N)."

"I never thought I would ever say this, but how's hell?" Natalia asked, and given how she is a Christian (or Catholic, I forget), does she worship Michael since she knows that god is dead?

"It's a lot better than I expected, and due to me being close to Rias, I can actually get some land and I get to choose what land I get." I explained everything going on in hell. "There's a lot of wildlife going on here, and the sky is rather beautiful."

"Oh estupenda, my own step son is probably going to end up living in hell, where did I go wrong?" Natalia was being sarcastic, evident from the light smile on her face.

"No need to worry, I plan on living on Earth, even if I do have my own territory in the underworld." I reassured my step mother. "Also, I'm apparently being appointed the leader of a special forces unit known as the Tarot when I graduate, and I'm getting my own unique peerage."

"That's great!" Asger was supportive of this, and wanted to continue cheering but he must have noticed my slightly melancholy expression. "I take it you're not excited."

"I mean, I'll get a peerage, but I don't think I can lead everyone like Rias can." I looked at the fight between the two peerages, Rias was commanding everyone left and right. "Unlike me, she's a stupendous leader and always does her best. She radiates an aura of superiority and intellect, and there's many other things that make her such a good leader. Traits that I will never possess."

"As much as I want to support you, you will never become a leader like Rias." Asger stated. "Her leadership is like that of an Empress, and you never be able to reach that."

"Asger, that's quite pessimistic, he's your son after all." Natalia pointed out, and her Japanese was improving.

"I'm just pointing out the obvious, there were no prophecies of his coming, his supernatural side might as well be human, I'm from a line of regular people, he's not destined to do great things, and there are no secrets about him." Asger informed me, but what he said next caught me off guard. "Despite all that, you've done more things than the chosen ones. Everything you've accomplished was entirely you, and some notes from your friends but primarily you. That's what inspires people. You're a nobody, yet you've become a nobody who surpasses the very gods, take pride in that. That's why people will follow you. You're one of them, and yet you fought toe to toe with the chosen ones of the gods."

"Dios mio, am I the only person in this family who isn't a motivational speaker?" Natalia asked with a grin. "In all seriousness, we have some good news (Y/N)."

"What is it?"

"The date of the wedding is official!" Natalia was overjoyed, and she almost spoke purely in spanish, which she only does when she's overjoyed or pissed, and she didn't look mad in the slightest.

"That's good to hear, I'm glad you two are getting married." I was happy for the two. "So when is the wedding?"

"It's next year, one of the spring months for certain." Natalia informed me, and it was August right now, wait, why did I think this was winter break? "We have enough money now from work since apparently we don't need to pay bills or taxes?"

(A/N: I'm not sure if any of you remember, but I said this hell arc was happening during winter break, but I was wrong, it actually takes place over summer break. My bad.)

"Being a member of the Gremory family peerage has its perks." I watched the rating game, and while I was still a member of Issei's peerage, Issei still had the pawn pieces inside him, making the peerage branch out.

"So when are you coming back home?" Asger asked before pointing at the glass door that leads outside. "There's this rock that looks like a meter tall buttplug outside now, and I want you to look at it just in case it's something special."

"I think that's the Stone of Destiny, Dagda told me he will be moving it here because there aren't anymore Folk of Danu in Ireland other than the ones who qualify as gods." I explained, and Asger looked smug.

"Told you the buttplug was important." Asger jokes, causing Natalia to roll her eyes.

"As for when I'm coming home, after the rating game, there will be a hospitalization period, and after that we'll go home." I answered, and both my parents looked confused. "Oh right, Rias and Sona are having a rating game, which is basically a fight as a kind of celebration of them entering official politics."

"Why is hell like this?" Natalia asked, wondering why all these disputes with violence, not like I'm complaining, but it is confusing.

"I don't know." I replied calmly before remembering something. "By the way, everyone thinks I'm going to change hell, but I want to know what you guys think."

"I'll answer this, because I know Asger will answer with some sort of motivational speech." Natalia decided to save me the trouble. "From what I've seen, you don't give two shits about what's impossible or not, you just do whatever you want, and accidently do more. If you think hell needs to change, then I can't think of anyone else to change it."

"What was that about me doing nothing but motivational speeches?" Asger asked with his hands on his hips.

"It's not my fault (Y/N) does the impossible on a daily basis." Natalia smirked. "Changing hell will probably be easy for (Y/N), whether or not he does it accidently."

"Thank you, now I'm more confident in my skills." I smiled, and I told my parents goodbye and they said their farewells to me back before hanging up.

"Excuse me, Lord (L/N)." A devil called me from behind, causing me to turn around, and they looked to be from a hospital. "We're short staffed today, and we need help to help those who fought in the rating game recover."

"Sure thing, I'll be right there." I agreed to help out, since he needed help, I had no reason to decline.

I walked off to the hospital, and I heard about the results of the fight. Rias won, Issei lost against Saji of all people, and everyone is confused as to why I didn't fight with them. To be honest, one of the main reasons was that Sona was a friend, and I never fight friends. Saji was in a worse condition than Issei, but Issei needed a blood transfusion. I donated some of my blood while pouring a bowl of beef stew for Saji and Issei. Even if my blood wasn't compatible, there's nothing wrong with donating some blood. Luckily, Issei and Saji got the worst of the injuries, and the others were doing just fine. As I was helping the hospital, I entered Issei's room to bring him his stew, and I saw him getting a blood transfusion via a bag connected to a wire. When Issei saw me, he was glad at first, but then his joy turned to annoyance.

"Don't look at me with those pitiful eyes." Issei pointed his finger at me, and I stopped looking at him all together while handing him his stew. "Say something, you're making me think you hate me."

"While I do hate your perverted antics, I don't hate you as a person." I commented while checking the bag of blood, making sure it was still full. "So I hope losing to Saji was an eye opener for you."

"In my defense, I lost to you." Issei tried justifying his loss, but Saji and I are on an entirely different level than one another. "You don't even have a sacred gear."

"I'm only able to fight like I am because I'm able to learn quickly, if I didn't have my quick learning or endurance, I would be dead by now." I crossed my arms. "Saji on the other hand only uses his sacred gear in a fight, that would be like me using only my endurance in a fight, and you still lost to him."

"To be honest, I'm glad I lost to him." Issei looked at his hand before clenching it. "I thought you and Vali were my only rivals, but I was dead wrong. Saji and I are having a contest now, to see who will achieve his dreams faster. Say, I don't know any of your goals. Mind telling them to me?"

"My dream...?" I wondered, the one thing I've always wanted to do. "Well, an idea that I've been toying with in my mind was opening a flower shop with my wife, if I ever get one that is. Flowers are nice, and I think the world could use more of them."

"That's a surprisingly normal dream for you (Y/N), I would have expected your goal is to become the strongest there is." Issei sounded surprised by my goal.

"To be honest, I can only go so far in terms of strength with my current conditions." I looked out the window. "The way I see it, there are three ways to become strong. Those born with power like Rias, the chosen ones like you, and those who work for it like myself. Only having one will only get you so far, so if possible, it's best to have all three. Unfortunately, I can't choose, so I'm stuck with only one. One day, you will surpass me if you work hard enough."

"Yeesh, now that you mention it, that sucks for you and is kind of unfair." Issei lay on his bed and looked at the ceiling. "You've trained harder than anyone, and it kind of pisses me off that you'll one day be left behind because of the way you were born, while I'll fight in your stead because I was lucky."

"That's why I decided on something a little while ago." I wore a determined glare, and Issei was surprised by this. "I decided I'll reject this way of things and forge my own path."

"How do you plan to do that, the only thing your blood allows you to do is to turn into a seal and learn things fast?" Issei asked, and what I'm going to suggest may sound crazy, but...

"I'll create my own sacred gear with my own two hands."

(A/N: You know, I have pretty weird luck when it comes to old people. Like one of my favorite encounters involves me walking (trying to come up with the next chapter of a fanfic), when I give this random old guy some help with his sprinkler to his trees won't die. He thanks me and then proceeds to talk for a while (completely unprompted mind you), at some point, he tells me he's a truck driver and his dream is to one day go to New York City for a delivery, keep in mind we're on the other side of the country. After that, he left and I never saw him again. Either way, I hope he got to go to New York, he sounded really passionate about it and I support him 100%. That's also why I try to be supportive of people and what they want to do. Oh yeah, I may also need help from fluent spanish speakers to help me with the wedding arc, which will be in a super long while. What do I need your help with? I just need you guys to confirm some of the dialogue is correct. I'll let you guys know when I need help, and it won't happen for a while.
