Chapter 41: The Ball, or Whatever it's Called
(Your POV)
It was officially time for the ball, and I was nervous beyond all reason. I was wearing a suit and tie, as was custom for these events, but my attire was slightly different. I wore a loose dress shirt underneath a dark blue vest. I had all of it tucked out of dress pants and dress shoes. My hair's gotten longer ever since I became a devil, now it reaches my shoulders. My hair was naturally thick and curly. so Grayfia put all of this together to give me the 'fisherman look' as Venelana likes to put it. With that in mind my hair was put in a slightly messy ponytail, with some strands of hair specifically sticking out to increase the effectiveness of this look. That, paired with the fact I had my sleeves rolled up slightly to reveal my forearms, managed to allow me to look better than most of the neat and proper people here. Strangely enough, this slightly unkempt appearance did make me quite popular for some reason. Downside is that I couldn't bring many tools with me. I had my Lauer hidden under my shirt, and my knife was duct taped onto my lower calf. I wasn't really talking to anyone, so I was looking around, making sure no one was looking suspicious.
"Hey you, you're that (Y/N) the Ultimate Immortal, right?" A pale man with a bald head and a black goatee called out to me, I recognized this man as one of the Four Great Satans, Falbium.
"Indeed I am." I bowed before the man, but not in my usual dogeza stance, instead, I did it similar to a butler. "You're Falbium of the Four Satans, correct?"
"Yep, you know your stuff." Despite his ranking and attire, which consisted of a black military uniform, he seemed quite aloof. "Sirzechs said that I should meet you here, to get a good idea as to who I'll be working with."
"So I take it they officially decided to involve me in the war against the Khaos Brigade?" I asked, and I personally wasn't a fan of the idea of leaving Rias or Issei's sides.
"Not exactly." Falbium gave a surprising answer. "The guys in charge around here all acknowledge your skills as a fighter, but your ability to lead for now is questionable. Besides, you're still a student in high school, so any official military stuff will have to wait until you graduate, unless you've got better things to do. Of course, there are emergency situations to look out for."
"Such as?" I knew emergency situations were always a problem, and if one occurs, hell will be forced to use Rias, Sona, Seekvaira, Sairaorg, the snake man, and that one other guy I forgot about, to fight the enemy.
"Should something happen to me, everyone agreed that you're the best fit, even though you don't have your own peerage yet." Falbium told me the plans, and why the hell was I selected to become the next member of the four satans?! "By taking my place, I mean just the guy in charge of Military Affairs. I have no idea who will replace me in the Four Satans. You've been training a lot, so surely you learned how to lead people."
"No, I learned how to play an electric guitar and the fiddle." I commented, and Falbium sweatdropped. "If it would help, I'm still learning the skills needed for the Mastermind, Empress, and Peacemaker talents. I have mastered everyone's talents except for Yozakura, Yui, Taka, Fumiko, and Mio's."
"The last ones are rather difficult since they tap into something you desperately need to work on, your charisma and political intellect." Falbium actually gave some pretty solid advice. "For the last three, try to take on their characteristics. A Mastermind is someone who observes while also controlling things from the shadows, an Empress is someone who rules over all within her authority, and a Peacemaker is someone who welcomes everyone."
"My biggest concern is Yozakura and Yui, however." I had no idea what Yozakura's talent was, and Yui's notes were pretty bad, they didn't explain everything. "I couldn't learn their talents."
"Oh yeah...about that, Yozakura's talent is the Ultimate Spy while Yui is the Ultimate Pyrotechnician." Falbium informed me, and I was quite caught off guard by this. "You didn't expect the Ultimate Spy to tell anyone all this, so Yozakura had Yui act as the Ultimate Spy In order to stay true to her name. I only know all this because Sirzechs let me look over the school's classified documents to find out what kinds of training regimine I should put soldiers through."
"Why are you telling me this?" I asked, and Falbium snapped his fingers, and several devils handed me a sleek black briefcase, like the kind you would see in a James Bond film.
"This briefcase is full of equipment needed for Spying and Pyrotechnics, I have a feeling something is going to happen tonight." Falbium gave his prediction while I looked inside the briefcase, and there was indeed a wide assortment of tools. "Think of this as a little test, show me what Scathach's training allows you to do now."
"I won't let you down." I closed the briefcase and bowed before Falbium, then I decided to walk around a bit, and after a bit, I came across Issei speaking to Saji, so I decided to join them. "It has been much too long since we last saw each other, Lord Issei."
"(Y/N), it's been a while!" Even though Issei was wearing a suit and tie, I could tell he's gained some muscle, most of it was focused into his legs, but hey, it's an improvement. "How was your training, I had to run away from Tannin the entire time, so it was hell."
"I learned most of my underclassmen's talents and used them to fight against Scathach while also improving my capabilities with my weaponry." I answered, and both Issei and Saji looked shocked. "I hope both of you at least tried during your respective training."
"Hey, are you even allowed to bring briefcases in here?" Saji pointed at my briefcase, and given how this was me we were talking about, anything could be considered a weapon.
"It was a gift from Falbium." I explained before I heard the sound of someone clearing their throat behind me.
I looked behind me and saw Rias, Akeno, Asia, Xenovia, Koneko, and Gasper all wearing dresses. Rias' hair was tied into a ponytail, which suited her for some reason, and her dress was long, thin, and blood red in color. Akeno's dress was white and looked like a wedding dress, and her hair was the same as usual. Asia's dress was a ballroom style dress that was yellow with mint green trimmings. Xenovia's dress consisted of blue silk gloves that reached her upper arms and a deep blue dress that exposed the back. Koneko's dress was more of a plum color and was shoulderless, but had the same kind of gloves as Xenovia's dress. Gasper's dress consisted of a white long sleeve shirt and dark red skirt that reached his ankles. Out of everyone here, I'd say he was the most excited to be wearing that dress.
"WHY ARE YOU IN A DRESS TOO!?" Issei shouted at Gasper, and in response to this, I simply karate chopped his head.
"It was cute." Gasper had flowers radiating off him because he was so overjoyed, and I may not understand this crossdressing thing all that much, but friends always support each other.
"It's not hurting anyone to let him crossdress, so let him do as he pleases." I crossed my arms and huffed. "I may not know what looks cute or not because I have no sense of fashion, but I suppose it's not that bad."
"Hey Issei, Tannin's here." Kiba walked out wearing a suit and tie, the arrival of Tannin forced Issei to run towards the balcony, I wonder if Scathach can defeat Tannin.
"(Y/N), could you come with me?" Rias asked, and I agreed to go with her. "Thank you, I need to meet up with some high class devils for political reasons, I'd prefer it if you were there with me."
"Understood Lady Rias." I nodded to show my understanding, and the two of us went alone to the ballroom.
As we walked, I noticed Rias walked incredibly close to me, even closer than usual. Due to my training, I was also able to sense emotions more clearly, and while Rias was doing an excellent job at hiding it, deep down, she was nervous that she'd mess something up that could cause her family to lose power. I didn't know what to do, so I grabbed her hand softly. Rias looked at me, and I continued looking forward, pretending not to notice or care about what I was doing. Rias' mood seemed to improve, which means I completed my original task. We approached a group of rich looking nobles, and all of them seemed wary of me, like I would have killed them if they said the wrong thing at the wrong time. Rias let go of my hand to put some distance between the nobles and I. I stood a little distance behind Rias to let her do the talking. As Rias was talking, Gasper appeared behind me, scared shitless of the crowd.
"Are you okay Gasper, I can take you back to the Gremory Mansion if the crowd is getting to your anxiety?" I offered, and while Gasper accepted my offer, Xenovia appeared with a tray full of drinks.
"If you did that, Azazel's training would go to waste, to help everyone, I got some drinks." Xenovia held the try carefully while Asia waved us over to a table. "There's some tomato juice for Gasper, and water for the rest of us."
"Don't vampires usually drink blood?" I asked whilst I grabbed the cup of tomato juice and handed it to Gasper, who was sitting in my shoulder. "If it helps, I have some blood you can drink."
"No thanks, blood is scary and tastes bad." Gasper apparently much preferred the taste of tomato juice.
"Thank you." Asia took a drink of the water and looked pretty relieved. "It's my first time at a place like this with so many people here, I was so nervous my throat dried up."
"Oh, it's you guys." I turned around to see the voice belonged to a blonde girl with drill-like hair and a pink dress, she looked kind of familiar in my opinion...wait, it's Rubal! "Nice to see you again Ultimate Shield, or do you go by Ultimate Immortal?"
"Hello Rubal." I greeted the girl, who looked slightly insulted for some reason, that was her name correct?
"I understand you must have forgotten my name, so let me tell it to you again, my name is Ravel Phenex." Ravel explained. "So it really is you, and here I thought I was just seeing a look alike. You've certainly changed over time."
"Thank you Lady Ravel, and before we speak more, I must ask where your brother is." I looked around, I didn't see Riser anywhere, he was one of the few people I disliked, I even like Vali more than I like Riser.
"He's done nothing but sulk in his room ever since his defeat, and he actually avoided coming here because he heard you were coming." Ravel covered her mouth with a fan, but I saw a slight smile. "To be honest, I think you traumatized him."
"To be fair, I think (Y/N) qualifies as a post traumatic event." Xenovia stated, and I didn't think I was that scary.
"Still, his defeat was caused by his negligence of his studies and reliance on his gifts alone." Ravel actually seemed rather pleased I beat up her brother. "With my brother unable to lead us, I now work for my mother, but since she doesn't participate in rating games, I'm essentially a freelance bishop. Hopefully in the future, the Ultimate Immortal might..."
"Forgive me for interrupting your sentence, but you are free to call me by my name." I thought the name 'Ultimate Immortal' didn't really mean much now that I have lost my immortality, but Scathach claims I'm stronger now. "I'm certain we're around the same age, and I don't even have a peerage yet."
"I can really call you by your name?" For a moment, Ravel dropped her high and mighty act and sounded more like a small girl who was desperate for a friend.
"Hey Ravel, your father's friend wants to meet you." One of Riser's rocks walked towards the small girl, and I recognized her as that masked rook I fought against during the rating game.
"I'll be right there Isabella." Ravel went back to her usual personality but it was quickly replaced with her meek personality moments later. "(Y-Y/N), sometime in the near future, would you like to join me for teatime? A-And if you'd like, I could prepare some handmade cake."
"I accept your offer, and while the cake is unnecessary, I won't stop you from preparing it if you desire." I noticed a glimpse of a blush on Ravel's face before she walked off to meet up with whoever she has to meet.
"She's quite thrilled, but she has a hard time showing it." Isabella informed me, and I was quite glad that I made Ravel happy, even if it was just by accepting her tea time request. "By the way, good job during that rating game (Y/N), I never got to tell you since you kind of knocked me out."
"To be honest, I only won against you all thanks to my weaponry, you're quite the capable fighter." I tried repaying the complement with one of my own.
"While that is true, you were a badass the whole time." Isabella went on, I guess I have a fan now. "Especially that last part 'No matter what obstacle stands in my way, I'll crush it with my Herculean strength', that one liner is gold. You should use it more often. Later."
After that, I decided to sit down and chat a bit with the rest of my friends who were around the table. I had my briefcase with me, since I doubt I would need any of the tools right now. Unfortunately, my little break was cut short when a black cat entered the room. Koneko wondered if it was someone's familiar, that is until she made eye contact with the cat. Koneko bolted at the cat without a moment's hesitation. For some reason, the story Rias told me yesterday rang in my head, and I ran in the same direction Koneko went. I reached into the briefcase to pull out what looked like an old fashioned pocket watch. I opened the pocket watch and it actually revealed a kind of radar. I stopped at the entrance of a large forest to examine the tool, noticing a single white dot thirty meters of my current position, and two red dots close to it. Two white dots were closing onto my current position, and I turned around to see Rias and Issei.
"(Y/N), where's Koneko?" Rias appears to have caught wind of Koneko's actions, it appears word travels fast in there. "I heard she suddenly ran after a black cat."
"I saw Rias running, so I wanted to see what's going on." Issei must have only followed the running Rias to see her chest bounce as she ran. "So Koneko is missing?"
"Missing gives the wrong implication, it's more like she ran into that forest." I pointed at the nearby forest, which was quiet, too quiet. "There are two people close to her position, both have hostile auras."
"Damn, don't you have anything in that toolbox like a sniper rifle?" Issei asked, referring to the briefcase.
"No, most of these are the kind of tools you'd see in a James Bond film." I showed Issei the inside of the briefcase. "They're more suited for espionage, recon, infiltration, tracking, and getting out of situations. There are fireworks though."
"Not sure if fireworks will be that great from this distance, but I guess it's better than nothing." Issei suggested we light a firework in that direction, but then it would hit Koneko, so that's a big no.
"Let's just go save Koneko." Rias demanded, and we all agreed without a second thought.
I led the group because unlike Rias and Issei, I actually had a solid lead as to where Koneko was. Normally, forests would be a problem to run in because of all the roots and bushes but I ignored those to plow right through them, using my body to create a kind of pan directly through the forest. I kept on running until I came across Koneko standing in a small clearing, allowing the moonlight to hit her perfectly. It was almost serene, until some voice came from the darkness.
"Hello, Shirone~." A dark figure was talking to Koneko from a tree branch, and I responded to this by getting my Lauer out and ready. "Miss me~?
"Kuroka...!" Koneko looked like she was having some flashbacks, and I grabbed her shoulder and pulled her behind me while I aimed my gun at Kuroka. "(Y/N)...!"
"So you four followed the two cats~?" Kuroka acted as though she used Koneko and that black cat as bait to lure us. "I'm touched, mrow~"
"Why are you here?" I asked, I was having none of this woman's catlike demeanor. "We don't have time to deal with you, so please leave the premises."
"I'm here because this little kitty got curious." Kuroka appeared very prideful of her cat-like features, and I have my doubts that all nekomata talk like that naturally.
"Yo, Red Dragon, Immortal." Bikou appeared from the nearby shrubbery with a wave of his hand. "Vali is getting stronger by the day, how about you guys? Think you guys can keep up?"
"Lady Rias, Lord Issei, take Koneko and go back to the party." I held out an outstretched hand, not really doing anything. "I can take care of these two."
"Sorry, but I'm taking Shirone back to HQ with me if you don't mind." Kuroka radiated an aura that screamed that she will take Koneko no matter what. "Ophis and Vali will probably be mad, but they'll understand once they learn that she has the same powers as me."
"Your odds of taking Koneko are low, so it would be better so save yourselves the energy and leave at once." Now I was furious, and Scathach told me to utilize my rage properly back when I trained against her, I wonder what she meant.
"Sure sure, you're a real tough guy, but even you can't take both Kuroka and I on by yourself." Bikou mocked me, and my blood was boiling. "Just hand over the girl, and we'll get out of your hair, how's that sound?"
"In my current state, taking you both on by myself is suicide..."
The sound of breaking earth and plants could be heard, and both of our opponents jumped to the side to avoid a blue mass coming towards my open palm. There was a crashing sound the moment the blue mass made contact and a dust cloud. The dust cleared to reveal me holding onto Genbu, and with the shield, Mule was duct taped to it along with my other weaponry. I undid the tape and held Genbu's shield and anchor confidently.
"Let me show you the true power of this shield here..." I took a breath in and the weapon began glowing. "Protect my Allies, Turtle Shield Genbu!"
(A/N: I know it's Easter Time for people who celebrate Easter, but is no one going to mention how weird it is. Like how beavers and hippos classify as a fish according to the Catholic Church (the reason for this argument is that meat is not to be eaten on Fridays during lent, which is 40 days before Easter). And the Easter Bunny is the church's fursona! Sure it's not neon colored nor does it have a Panic at the Disco t-shirt, but a furry is still a furry. Keep in mind any remarks I make about any group are purely comedic, and my actual opinions on those groups are unknown.
