Chapter 4: Second Mission
(Your POV)
I was currently outside my lighthouse, practicing using those barbed wire boxing gloves I made. I didn't know much about boxing, and I didn't have a boxing bag, but I did have a large rock that I pulled from the sea. Before school, I decided to get some training in by practicing my boxing. Every time I struck the rock, a piece of it would come chipping off, I guess this boost in strength is useful in its own way. Still, I need to find a more effective way to protect not only Lady Rias, but also everyone else too, perhaps an actual shield?
Perhaps that would be wise, but I wonder where I'd get a shield in the first place. I noticed the position of the sun and took note that it was now time for me to leave for school. I walked towards the door and picked up my book bag to check if I had everything I would need for the day. Once I saw that I had everything I would need, I used my keys to lock up the house before I started running towards the school.
It's not that I'm usually late or anything, it's just that I usually check the school area for any holes that the perverted trio may sneak peeks in. I was usually the guy who fixes the holes, but I don't get paid for it. Why do I do it? Well I wanted the perverts to use their heads and try to find something else to do with their time, like studying for that exam that's coming up. Speaking of exams, do I need to study anymore? My devil duties now give me more options in the field, but then again I wouldn't exactly mind being a bodyguard for high-class devils.
I was lost in thoughts before I realized I bumped into some one, so I quickly caught them by the right hand, kind of like we were dancing. I noticed that the girl looked rather caught off guard and kind of flustered. Her petite figure was as small as, if not smaller than, Koneko's. I gently made sure she stood straight and began examining her body to make sure I didn't break anything, I don't know why, but my protecc-radar was going off the charts.
"Oh my goodness, are you okay?" The small nun asked, is she seriously the one asking that? "I hope I didn't hurt you."
"I should be asking you that, but I am fine, thank you for asking." I decided to reassure the girl's concerns before taking notice of something. "You're a nun, aren't you?"
"I guess it was made obvious by the outfit, but yes, I am a nun." The girl informed me, then she looked like she just realized something. "Oh, I forgot to introduce myself, how rude of me. I am Asia Argento."
"(Y/N)." I introduced myself before taking in a fact I haven't realized. "Do you have any idea as to where the church is around here?"
"Um...no..." Asia answered, I figured that much, but maybe I can help her. "Wait, how did you know?"
"You're in the opposite side of town heading the opposite direction of the only church in Kuoh." I deadpanned, and I noticed she was even more flustered. "I can show you the way if you'd like."
"That would be very nice." Asia accepted my offer and I started showing her the way to the church.
There was a silence between us, and I was hoping this Asia girl wasn't intimidated by not only me, but also the barbed wire boxing gloves I kept on me. I had the rope of the two boxing gloves attached to my book bag, and I hoped she didn't see the barbed wire. As if that wasn't enough, I also had my gun under my shirt. Still, she kept on following me at my side. We were walking through the park when the two of us heard the sound of a boy crying. I began searching through my book bag to pull out some bandages, a gouge, and rubbing alcohol I keep around in case some fool tries to stab me again.
"It's fine (Y/N), I can take care of this." Asia informs me before she walks towards the boy.
After she reached the boy, she crouched down and placed her hands above yeh scraped knee, and to my amazement, she began healing the knee with a mint green light. The light began healing the knee and I put away my supplies to watch the scene unfold in front of me. I'm hoping what she's using is magic, because if it's a sacred gear then some fallen angels are gonna try to kill her for it. Once Asia was done, she smiled at the boy and gave him a couple words of encouragement before walking back towards me to continue our walk.
"Impressive, is it alright if you tell me what that was?" I asked Asia, who looked surprised for some reason. "You don't have to, I'm just curious."
"Oh that was a blessing from the lord." Asia explained solemnly, not realizing she made a Monty Python reference. "I can heal people using this blessing, but some of my fellow nuns see it as a curse."
"I fail to see their logic, I think you have an amazing gift." I was keeping it to myself, but I think she has a sacred gear, maybe I should tell Lady Rias in case Asia is targeted by the fallen.
"Really?" Asia seemed genuinely surprised I saw her healing powers as a gift, who wouldn't see that kind of power as a gift?
"Indeed, it's a power that makes it hard to hurt people." I went on as the two of us kept on walking towards the church.
With that said, we arrived at the church and I insisted on walking her towards the front door. Whilst I was walking her towards the front doors, I noticed a headache of mine getting worse. Thanks to my pain tolerance, I was able to hide and tolerate the pain enough for Asia not to be concerned with me. With that done, I said my goodbyes to the nun and wished her farewell. As I left the church however, I felt someone was watching me. I don't like loose ends, so I took out my Desert Eagle and noticed something that looked like a head peeking out from behind the church walls. There's no way it could have been Asia because the part of the church was incredibly high up and I could see no stairs leading up to it. So I shot the head, bullseye. Upon impact, I noticed black feathers faltering to the ground. Given how my mother's song was not playing in my head, it's likely that I didn't kill them.
My mother never really liked me, so why is her song playing in my head?
(Timeskip, brought to you by a seal swimming by the camera and waving)
It was now after school, and both Issei and I were currently on our way to a job we were supposed to do. I still had my Desert Eagle, boxing gloves, and my book bag just in case. Issei was riding a bike Rias provided and I was balancing my feet on bars that were put on the back of the wheels and my hands on Issei's shoulders. The two of us haven' heard from Matsuhada or Motohama in a while, so we wondered what happened to them. Issei guessed they finally got caught by the gym teacher who hates perverts and I guessed they were blinded because a girl sprayed them with very potent pepper spray.
"Very potent pepper spray?" Issei asked with a chuckle, to which I shrugged. "By the way, I saw you talking to Akeno earlier, you two going out?"
"No, I asked her to teach me some magic, and I am grateful she complied." I recalled what Issei is talking about. "She said I just needed to find an element that will work best for me and a way for me to use it."
"Aw man, how come you get to work on magic with her...?" Issei asked in a mopey voice, clearly jealous.
"Maybe it's because I asked her." I guessed, which made Issei go quiet for a while. "Am I wrong?"
"Not exactly..." Issei sweatdropped as we kept on riding the bike towards the apartment we were supposed to go to. "So which way do I go?"
"You keep going straight, this apartment is in the more abandoned part of town, so it'll stand out." I gave Issei the directions because I knew where this place was, but I had no idea someone actually lived there.
It took a couple more minutes for us to arrive at the apartment, but something felt off to me. I was always overly cautious, but this felt wrong to me. Issei parked the bike at the base of the empty apartment building, and the two of us got off the thing. I decided to put on my bonding gloves for safe measure, and Issei was about to summon his sacred gear, but I stopped him on the premise that if something does happen, it should only happen to me. I opened the door for both of us and was met with an eerie silence, so I went in first to investigate. Inside the room was dark and difficult to see in, use like every building in this town apparently.
As I walked into the room, I noticed signs of a struggle or a fight. Furniture was knocked over, a lamp was broken on the floor, and the table was split in half. Steeling my nerves, I walked forward into the only room in the house with a source of light. I poked my head into the room and was mortified with what I found, there was a man who looked like he was doing a satanic ritual. The corpse of our supposed client was pinned upside down like Saint Peter, and there was even imagery drawn in blood all over the room. In the middle of the room was an unfamiliar man praying for some reason.
"Punish the wicked and reward the good, wise words to live by..." The man said out loud. "Wouldn't you agree, devil?"
"I have to respectfully disagree, I believe all people deserve at least a chance of redemption." I answered calmly. "Whether or not they use that chance correctly is their choice, and depending on the choice, they'll die on their own or finally do something with their lives."
"Surprisingly smart words for a devil, but futile." The man pulled out a sword with a blade made of light. "Out of respect for your answer, I'll tell you my name, which is Freed."
"I'm (Y/N), and out of respect for the dead, I shall make sure to end your rampage." I got into a stance and dodged a pierce with Freed, but a piece of my cheek was cut.
Freed was obviously a lot faster than me, so I'm gonna need to play it safe and pray that my endurance can outlast him. I ducked underneath a sword swing before delivering an uppercut to Freed's jaw. I noticed that Freed used his other hand to pull out a gun, so I sidestepped to move out of the bullet's way. I attempted to deliver a kick, but Freed managed to parry it. Using my other hand, I punched Freed in the gut in an attempt to stagger him. I didn't expect him to kick me away and in front of Issei, who had his sacred gear out.
"Issei, contact the others, it was an ambush." I got up from the ground and got into another fighting stance. "I can hold him off for a while, but you must get to safety."
"Are you freaking kidding me?!" Issei asked while he used his sacred gear to boost his power before running toward Freed. "You're my friend, so I'm not gonna let you take this guy on your own."
"Very well then, but contact the others before helping me." I order before charging towards Freed and tackling him with my shoulder.
My tackle managed to send Freed and I through a nearby wall, breaking it and forcing the exorcist to take the brunt of the force. I stopped abruptly and started pummeling Freed using my boxing gloves, but at the last punch, Freed managed to parry one of my fists using his sword. Somehow, the blade managed to cut my boxing left glove in half, forcing it to fall off. I felt my blood start leaking out on the same hand, but I ignored the pain.
If I gave up because of a little bit of pain, I'd be abandoned again.
I decided to use my remaining boxing glove the most I could by slugging Freed's head and using my injured arm to pull my Desert Eagle out. I managed to catch Freed off guard by the sudden gun, but that didn't stop me from pressing the barrel to his stomach and attempting to fire. Freed realized this right away and side stepped before shooting me in the right shoulder. I felt both my arms lose their feeling before headbutting Freed.
I used my right hand to punch him in the stomach once more in hopes that it will buy Issei enough time. I got cut in the stomach, but like always I ignored the pain and pushed through. Every breath pushed me forward, and pain was just a mere obstacle for me to push through. I stomped on Freed's foot to hold him in place before reeling my fist back and shooting Freed in the shoulder. I used the last of my strength to punch Freed in the nose with all my strength. Freed was sent through three walls before he stopped all together at the fourth one, blood was spilling out of his face, but his expression showed he was beyond pissed. I tried pushing forward, but I fell to my knees from the severity of the wounds, but I could still fight. I tried raising my left arm, but a voice stopped me.
"F-Father F-Freed, what's g-going on?"
I turned around to see no one other than Asia standing at the entryway, a look of pure horror on her face. Of course she was a part of Freed's little cult, she was dressed as a nun for the gods' sake! I also noticed Issei looked flat out confused about things, so I decided to explain it to him once I can.
"Ah Asia, about time you arrived." Freed wore a grin before walking towards the door, careful to stay out of range of me. "You see, I was just punishing the wicked and killing some devils."
"W-What, but (Y/N) helped me?" Asia defended me, I guess she really is a gift. The mood was ruined by Freed kicking me in the head. "Please don't hurt him!"
"Huh, this filthy devil helped you?" Freed tried removing his foot, but I used this opportunity to bite into his leg and not let go. "Scratch that, he acts more like a filthy dog without a master."
"Stay the hell away from my friend!" Issei was about to punch Freed, but the exorcist managed to block the strike before attempting to shoot him.
"Stop fighting!" Asia screamed in sorrow while Freed finally managed to dislodge his leg, but lost a part of his pants that I spit out. "Just leave them alone, please!"
"Aw, is someone getting sympathetic for mere devils?" Freed grabbed Asia by the throat and pinned her against the wall. "Looks like someone needs a punishment."
Freed tore off a piece of Asia's chest, and I could feel my rage building up within my chest again, so I raised my gun while Freed was distracted. Like always, my mother's distorted song began ringing within my ears, but I was beyond pissed. I was forced to choose between keeping my mother who barely talked to me happy or protecting a nun I just met. I felt tears swell up in my eyes as I made my choice...
I shot the gun right at Freed's heart.
A new bullet hole was seen where Freed's heart was, and the exorcist went pale before turning his attention to me. His face wasn't of rage, it was horror. As if that wasn't enough, the song was filling my ears like fog horns were being blasted directly against my ears. The melody was completely off, and the lyrics were much more dark and sinister than I remember. Now it sounded like a curse, but I didn't care. Freed collapsed onto the ground and Asia was safe.
"What did you do?" Issei asked as I lowered the gun to let the barrel point at the floor.
"I did what I had to." I could feel blood leaking from my ears, and the song began fading out like radio static. "Forgive me, mother-"
I coughed out some blood shortly after begging for an apology for someone who will most likely never hear it, so I asked Issei to hand me my book bag. Issei gave me the bag and I pulled out a needle, some stitches, alcohol, and some bandages. Using my experience, I cleaned the wound and managed to sew myself back together long enough to get to a hospital. However, Asia insisted I let her heal me, and I didn't have any other options than to let her do it. As she healed me, Rias and the others arrived, all of whom were confused by the sight.
"What on Earth happened here?" Rias asked, being the first one to break the silence.
"Don't worry about that, but why is the church so evil?" Issei questioned out loud, as if the answer isn't obvious.
"We're devils, what did you expect?
(A/N: You know, you guys can probably figure out what the MC's dynamic is right now, I gave all of you guys the clues. Am I saying you have to? No, it's way too early, but I am saying it's possible. Of course, it'll be hard because I used only one relatively unknown mythical creature.
