Chapter 35: Gremory Household

(Your POV)
I got off the train nervously, knowing that Rias told her family about me. What if she got their hopes up? What if they're disappointed in how I look? As far as I know, all devils are incredibly attractive with the exception being Riser. Now that I think about it, Riser looks like an actor, it's his personality that's horrible. Despite my anxiety causing me a small panic attack, I managed to hide my emotions perfectly like a mask so as to not worry anyone. We all entered the castle and was met with a chess print floor that was made of marble, and echoed with every step. We were walking down a hallway with maids and butlers lined up against the wall, and there appeared to be no end to them. Gasper's anxiety attack was infinitely worse than mine,

"Welcome back, Lady Rias." All the servants spoke in mission and bowed before the red haired girl, kind of freaky if you ask me.

"There's so many people..." Gasper tried climbing into one of the bags on Mule, but I stopped him because the bag he tried climbing into in particular with full of landmines.

"This isn't a mansion, this is just a massive castle." Asia stated the obvious. "Why are there so many servants?"

"Because the size of the Gremory house's property is roughly the size of Honshu island." Kiba explained, and that really didn't help me because I had no idea how big that island was.

(A/n: Honshu island is roughly 1,300 kilometers squared or 810 miles squared)

"Due to all of you being a part of my Peerage, each of you will be given land of your choosing." Rias informed me, and I realized I may be in way over my head, because I can not manage anything.

"Please don't enturst anything valuable to me, I'm bad at managing things." I requested, but Rias refuses to take no for an answer from me.

"Relax (Y/N), I'll help you, besides, it'll be a good learning experience." Rias commented as a pair of figures made themselves known in front of us. "Oh hello Grayfia."

"You're back early Lady Rias, nice to see you again with (Y/N)." Grayfia greeted us, and everyone was confused as to why Grayfia said it was nice to see me, so she had to explain. "For the record, I'm not into (Y/N) romantically, it's just nice to meet with someone similar to me every now and then."

"Auntie Rias!" A small child with red hair hugged Rias, and the girl hugged the small child back with a smile.

"Millicas, you've grown so much since I last saw you." Rias sounded like a grandmother seeing her grandchild after a long time, though I wonder who this child is.

"Who's the kid?" Issei asked the red headed girl as Millicas and her stopped hugging each other for introductions.

"I'm Millicas Gremory, nice to meet all of you." Millicas appeared to be a polite child, but a child is always honest, which evident when he looked at me and asked a serious question. "Are you Auntie Rias' husband?"

"I don't think so..." I examined my hands for a wedding ring to make sure, and there wasn't a single ring on them, but there was a blush on Rias' face.

"That aside, Millicas is the son of my brother Sirzechs and Grayfia." Rias explained, and before anyone knew it, I was in a dogeza stance. "(Y/N), you don't need to bow to everyone, Millicas is just after me in terms of succession."

"When did you even get into that stance?" Issei asked curiously. "It's like one minute you were standing, next you're in a dogeza."

"I have no better ways to show my respect." I defended myself as Xenovia pulled me by the collar of my shirt, and I looked around. "Say, when did Azazel leave us?"

"He left back at the train station, he had to meet up with Sirzechs about something." Akeno explained, and I felt kind of stupid for not noticing he was gone up until now.

"Oh my, Rias, is that you?" All of us turned our attention to the source of the voice, which appeared to be a brown haired woman who bears a striking resemblance to Rias.

(A/N: You know the drill, she's married so she's out of the harem. Though she is gonna be a kind of wingman for the MC)

"Oh, yes mother, I'm here." Rias called the woman 'mother', and I had to take a double take because this woman only looked SLIGHTLY older than Rias.

"You're Rias' mother, you two look like you're around the same age!" Issei's only honest when it comes to things involving women, and he appeared to be having perverted thoughts, so I struck him lightly in the back of the head.

"Issei, she's married, I know you're a pervert, but please try to be decent." I whispered into my friend's ear before suddenly going into my usual Dogeza stance.

"So this is the (Y/N) I've heard so much about, he doesn't look like much." Rias' mother doesn't appear to like me, what did I do wrong? Is she going to kick me out? "You didn't tell me (Y/N) would stare at my chest so much."

"No mother, you're looking at Issei, the current Red Dragon Emperor, (Y/N) is the one who's bowing before you." Rias corrected, and I was forced to stand by Akeno pulling me up, allowing Rias' mother to examine me more thoroughly, most likely judging if I'm worthy of her daughter.

"Now I remember you, you're the one who made Riser's defeat possible and freed Rias from her engagement." Rias' mother smiled at me, not seductively mind you, but more like she was happy about something. "My name is Venelana Gremory, it's an honor to finally meet you in person (Y/N)."

"The honor is mine, Lady Venelana." I tried being polite to Venelana, but in my head, I was panicking, what if she thinks I don't even deserve to be close to any of these people. "I barely did anything against Riser, I just took out most of his pieces and held him in place, your daughter did most of the work."

"Don't stare at my mother with that lustful gaze of yours." Rias sounded more disgusted than usual as she pinched Issei's ear, and Issei recoiled in the pain.

"Rias has told me so much about you, like how you helped fight Kokabiel, how you always prioritize her protection, how kind and sweet you are, and many other good things." Venelana flattered me with those words, and I looked at Rias to see she was blushing.

"I am honored to hear that Lady Venelana." I thanked the woman, who merely waved her hand.

"Relax, just call me mom." Venelana shot out of nowhere, and before I could ask her about it, she turned her attention to everyone. "I'm sure all of you are hungry after your journey, the servants are serving dinner right now, so please, come join Zeoticus and I."

With that invitation now in the air, it would be rude to decline her offer, so we all went along with Venelana as she began catching up with Grayfia. I was understandably confused as to why Venelana was so young looking, but I was nervous that Rias would think I'm creepy if I asked that. Plus I want to know why Venelana wants me to call her mom. Is it something she's into? At this point, I'm not going to judge. Rias seems to have noticed my puzzled look and shook my arm lightly to get my attention.

"Hey (Y/N), is everything okay, my mother didn't make you nervous did she?" Ross asked, and I said that Lady Venelana didn't make me nervous. "I'm sure you noticed this, but my mom looks incredibly young. To explain that, devils of a past a certain age can use a certain spell to make themselves look younger. As for why my mother makes herself ok around my age...I want to know why too."

"Thank you for explaining this to me." I was grateful for Rias' explanation, and we approached a large pair of doors with servants on either side, and the servants opened the doors.

The dining room was just what you'd expect, unnecessarily large and horribly lit. The only source of light was a pair of large chandeliers over a long table that looked like it could house my entire class. At the head of the table was Zeoticus, who was sipping tea and reading a newspaper. When he saw us walking in, he smiled and greeted us casually. He gestured for us to take a seat, and I took a seat close to the head of the table between Rias and Issei. Across from me was Venelana, making me within speaking range of all the Gremories.

"Please feel free to act as though this was your home, the maids and butlers will attend to your every need." Zeoticus welcomed us warmly, and Issei started wearing a perverted expression, so Koneko struck him in the head. "Say (Y/N), I don't know you very well, so what do you like to do."

"What I like to do...?" I have always been busy with maintaining the lighthouse before I became a devil, and I was busy with training when I became one, but there was something that was interesting in my opinion that I used to do. "I liked flowers."

"Flowers?" Zeoticus looked surprised, as for how I managed to surprise the former devil king is beyond me. "Like roses, wisterias, and such?"

"Indeed, I liked knowing what they represented, taking care of them, and how pretty they looked." I answered honestly. "Though I have been too busy for useless things like that."

"That's a random interest for someone like you, but still a nice one." Zeoticus complimented my interests and I nodded, not really sure how to take a compliment. "There's a garden around here I think you should look into, there's so special flowers that only grow in hell. I'll have a maid escort you later."

"Thank you Lord Zeoticus." I would have bowed, but bowing while sitting down is hard, plus the maid placed a plate down in front of me.

"No need for adding 'Lord' to my name, it makes me feel old." Zeoticus Waves his hand before speaking again. "Speaking of names, feel free to call me 'father' from now on."

How many parents am I going to have?

"While you're here, it would be wise to to learn more on the etiquette, manners, and knowledge on devil culture." Venelana explained, and I nodded to show I understand. "Besides, you'll be marrying Rias, if you so please, and it'll be smart to teach you now so you can adjust quicker."

"Don't leave me out of important conversations that affect my future." Rias slammed her hands on the table and stood up, and I had to catch her cup of water so it didn't spill.

"Please be quiet." Venelana now has a different air around her, instead of a welcoming housewife, she sounded more like somebody I didn't want to piss off. "Rias, you're the one who broke off the engagement with Riser and we allowed it because it was highly likely that (Y/N) would have resorted to killing Riser himself."

"I apologize for the inconvenience I would have caused without a second thought."

"We cannot abide by such selfishness, so please be quiet." Venelana appears to speak from experience, and I watched as she went back to her normal self. "Sorry you had to see that unsightly scene."

"I appreciate your hospitality Lady Venelana, and I am not questioning your ability to lead, but I must ask that Rias be allowed to voice her opinions." I politely requested, and Venelana didn't look confused or mad, but rather...surprised. "It would be wise to include all opinions before making a solid decision, I understand strength is important for devils, but they say that the preparation for war is the cause for war. I understand you want to keep the devil bloodline pure, but you must understand many wars have been caused just with this way of thinking, so please update it a bit."

"It's quite rare to find someone who believes that a woman deserves a voice in politics." Zoeticus commented, and judging from the sound of his voice, he was surprised. "So why do you think that?"

"I believe all people who the choice affects and knows most on the subject must get a say in the matter, while those who remain unaffected or know too little must stay out of it." I commented. "I respect you both, Lord Zeoticus and Lady Venelana, but the two of you should let Lady Rias make her own decisions on her fate. She's a smart woman, don't let the flame of her intelligence die out because of politics."

"There's not many people who would agree with you, so what would you do about them?" Venelana appeared to be testing me, and I didn't know the correct answer, so I went with my gut.

"I'd fight them." I answered shortly, and for a moment, everyone looked hopeless. "Diplomatically, physically, intellectually, no matter what battlefield they choose, I will fight them all head on."

"But what If they are stronger than you, smarter than you, or more dangerous than you?"

"I have other attributes. I can beat those stronger than me with my intellect. Beat those smarter than me with my Herculean strength. Beat those who surpass me in both with my skill. I can kill those who are better than me in all three with underhanded tricks. If it means improving the lives of those who don't have a voice, I will fight anyone, and win."

"You pass~" Venelana clasped her hands together with light excitement. "I wanted to know the kind of person my daughter wanted to marry, so I decided to test you a little bit to see what kind of person you are, and I can tell Rias was right about you, you're exactly the kind of person who can change hell."

"My goal is to not change hell, I just wanna protect my friends." I began eating the dinner set down in front of me earlier by a maid.

"You are officially a member of high society in hell (Y/N) due to your being a member of Rias' peerage." Zoeticus informed me, and I noticed he had a light smile. "You're going to be effecting hell no matter what you do, so you might as well make it a good change."

"I understand, but please don't expect too much from me." I then picked up a fork and a knife and mimicked the way Grayfia was holding them to begin eating, since etiquette is still new to me, but I know it exists.

After that little episode, the table's mood became much more lighthearted, focusing more on what Rias did during her time back on earth (normal territory?) and how we met. Rias did most of the talking because I was too busy focusing on my etiquette as I ate. Lady Venelana and Lord Zeoticus didn't seem too mad about my little speech earlier, in fact, now that they had time to process it, they were very supportive of me. Back on the subject of how Rias and I met, Rias made sure to leave out the parts where she joined me in bed, because that's a horrible thing to mention in front of parents.

The conversation mainly consisted of things that already happened, like the fight against the rogue devil and my fuck up of a first mission. Though looking back on it, I suppose I was a little too hard on myself. Not that any of that matters now, but I wonder where the fallen angels are nowadays. I checked on the church I burned a couple days after the whole Riser deal, and I didn't find anything related to fallen angels, other than a strange altar. For obvious reasons, I have a sketch of the altar just in case it could be useful. I still felt a little out of place, even when I finished eating, I was still slightly nervous. I was about to take everyone's dishes to wash them, but the servants beat me to it.

"Now that everyone is done eating, feel free to rest in the hot springs." Zeoticus then stood up from his chair and began walking out the room, as did the rest of us.

All of us began walking down the hall when we left the dining hall, and I felt bad about leaving the servants to do all the work, I wanted to help them. "Hey (Y/N), can I talk to you for a second?"

"Sure thing, Rias." I walked back towards where she stood, which was right in front of the closed dining room doors, and we waited for everyone else to leave before talking. "What do you wish to talk about?"

"I just wanted to say thank you, even if it was a test, you stood up for me without a second thought." Rias thanked me, and I tilted my head in confusion. "Usually I'm stuck going with whatever people have planned for me, and that was the first time anyone has ever even considered I have feelings."

"You're welcome?" I then began thinking out loud, surprising Rias. "Am I supposed to say 'you're welcome'? If I do say it, it sounds like I only did it for the thank you or reward. I don't think I did it for either of those."

"Then why do you think you did it?" Rias wondered out loud, and I began thinking intensely, and what made it harder was the fact that Iras was staring at me with her blue eyes.

"I have a lot of choices in my life, and being nice tends to make people happy, so I try to help others to make them happy." I was caught off guard by Rias placing a hand on my shoulder.

"This is exactly why I fell in love with you." Rias then planted her lips onto mine, and I was caught off guard, but the sensation felt nice, so I let it happen until Rias finally broke the kiss and left, leaving me alone with my thoughts.

The smell of roses was also stronger for some reason.

(A/N: Just so we're clear, the whole flower thing is just a hobby. Kind of like how well written MC's usually do something other than train, like playing video games. It wouldn't make much sense for this MC, who didn't know what a thermostat was until a month ago, to play video games that often, so flowers are my best bet. Besides, taking care of flowers is a good hobby. Is it feminine? Yeah, what about it? People can enjoy what they enjoy so long as it doesn't hurt anyone or make them a menace to society.
