Chapter 34: Train Ride to Hell
(Your POV)
After a long ride on Jormungandr's head, I ran through Kuoh, since today was now the day of our journey to hell. For some reason, I felt quicker now that my immortality is gone, and honestly, more free. I looked at a nearby alley and ran into it, taking a sharp turn in the process. I jumped onto a trashcan before jumping off of it to grab onto a nearby balcony. I pulled myself up and jumped onto the neighboring roof. I was surprised by this, but then I remembered I can just fly using my devil wings, so I just wasted everyone's time. Despite that, I ran towards the subway station we were supposed to meet at. I don't know why, but I'm paying attention to every little detail now, the wind blowing through my hair, the sun beaming down onto my body, slightly humid weather, and so on. I jumped over the gaps between buildings until I arrived at the subway station, there I saw my friends with their bags walking into the subway station. They didn't know I was there until I accidentally tripped on the ledge of the building I was jumping off of. Then I landed on top of a couch someone threw out, and by landed, I mean fell through.
"I have arrived." I poked my head through the hole I made while falling before getting out of the couch, picking off the pieces of cotton on me.
"(Y/N)!" Asia hugged me the moment she saw me, and the other girls were surprised that I was here, but were happy nonetheless. "Are you okay?"
"I am alright, thank you for your concerns." I thanked Asia as I stepped out from the hole I made, and I was face to face with a Rias, who wore a stoic expression.
"So (Y/N), did you do it?" Rias asked, and I nodded to show that I indeed did it. "Do you feel as though you made the right choice of the wrong choice?"
"I am uncertain if my choice was the correct one, but I promise you, I will not be a burden without it, I will only grow stronger without it." I spoke seriously, and Rias seemed surprised by this.
"You've grown quite a bit (Y/N), back when I first met you, and I'm proud of you for that." Rias pointed out my growth with a smile, but I feel the same. "When I first met you, you were scared, desperate, and lonely. Now you're more confident, brave, and determined."
"I feel as though I'm the same." I looked at myself, and noticed that my selkie's coat was not on me, but instead, it was in one of Mule's bags. "Still, I am grateful you think that way."
"So shall we begin our trip?" Akeno gestured towards the entrance to the subway, then I finally noticed that Azazel decided to join us on this trip, goes to show how much faith he has in this alliance.
With that said, all of us made our way into the train station, only to see it looked to be empty and the lights weren't in working conditions. I assumed something was up right away and unsheathed Solais, getting Kiba's attention, but Rias reassured me that nothing was up. I quickly remembered how unnecessarily overdramatic Rias can be at times. I sheathed my blade and heard an unfamiliar sound, but then again, I never rode on a train before, much less saw one. The train suddenly came to a screeching halt in front of us, and given how it looked somewhat like a sacred gear, with red plates and green orbs randomly placed, I assumed that this was a magic train. I half expected some guy to come out of it saying "All aboard!" or something else along those lines. Instead, the doors to the train opened up to let all of us inside. The inside completely contradicted the outside by looking like an industrial revolution era train, complete with curtains over the windows and old fashioned lights. Like everything else from hell apparently, it was dark, so I tripped over the seats, luckily not breaking anything. I sat myself down on one of the seats, allowing Koneko and Rias to sit on either side of me while Xenovia, Asia, and Akeno say across from me. Gasper, Issei, and Kiba sat behind me on the seats on the other side. The windows were rather dark for some reason, maybe because we're in a subway?
"So (Y/N), where did you go, and I'm guessing those new items are yours?" Rias wanted to know more about my little trip and new items, which were being carried by Mule.
"To put it bluntly, these are three of the four Sacred Treasure belonging to the Children of the Danu." I explained as I showed off Solais and the Crimson Javelin. "The fourth one is being moved."
"So your mysterious blood was actually a Child of Danu?" Rias asked, since she knew about the mysterious blood, and I nodded to show she was correct. "I feel kind of idiotic for not noticing sooner, you always have been close to nature and you're really good at learning other things."
"To be fair, I never heard of this 'child of Danu' race before, so I doubt it would be the first thing that comes to one's mind." I rested my body in the chair I was in, noticing how comfortable it was. "Though what do you mean by 'close to nature'?"
"The Children of Danu are descended from the tree known as Danu, so all of them are related to nature in their own way." Rias explained, and I listened intently. "You may not go hiking and meditate in the woods or anything, but you do spend a lot of time in the ocean, even using an ocean based magic."
"The ocean is nice." I remembered the ocean, aka my second home as Xenovia picked up my Gae Bulg and examined it closely. "Xenovia, please be careful touching the blade of that weapon, I have heard stories of its effectiveness, but I have yet to see it's full capabilities."
"Understandable, but it feels just as powerful as my Durandal, but...different so to speak." Xenovia handed me back my weapon and examined her hands. "Durandal is a fragment of Excalibur, so it has holy properties, but your Gae Bulg seems different. Instead of holy magic, it's magic seems to come from a tree."
"That would explain its tree-like design." I commented on the fact that Gae Bulg looked like a pole-like branch that attaches itself to a firm blade with a strong grip. "So what have you all been doing while I was away?"
"I was trying to learn more about my fallen angel side, thanks to Azazel telling me I have to, so I asked a student from Raizen who's enrolled in the talented course." Akeno explained, and I've heard of this Raizen school. "I don't know his name, but he gave me some fallen angel-related information in exchange for a basic magic lesson."
"I was watching a show with Koneko that Asger recommended, a show where the characters could control elements using their bodies as conduits via certain movements." Rias explained, and I have never heard such a concept. "Maybe you should try it, since using magic like Akeno and I has been..."
"Horrible?" I finished Rias' sentence, and was happy that she was trying to consider my feelings by not saying anything about my magic skills, which are pretty mediocre compared to Akeno and her. "Possibly, I'll look into the show when we arrive in hell. Speaking of which, what will we be doing there?"
"We will be training to take on the Khaos Brigade." Rias explained before gesturing to me. "Azazel managed to find footage of your fight with Vali, and while you did manage to hold him off, winning against him is impossible for you. You only managed to stand a chance last time because he thought you were going to use your selkie traits to fight, he didn't expect that you were going to use guerilla warfare or random talents to fight him."
"Indeed, and if Vali had used his dividing gear on my stamina, then I wouldn't have lasted as long as I did." I then thought back to my fight with Vali, why didn't he use his dividing gear on me in the first place?
"Actually, I think he tried doing so, but your stamina pool is so massive that it was almost pointless." Akeno commented, which may not be too far off, I wonder how big my stamina pool is. "So (Y/N), what do you plan to do when you get to hell?"
"I don't know, what do you girls plan on doing?" I asked, since I had no plans, maybe I'll just stay by someone's side and do what they want to do. "If it's alright, I'd like to stay close to someone I know."
"I was going to meet with my family, and I was hoping to introduce my mother and nephew to you." Rias informed me, and I would be more than happy to meet them.
"I think that's because they must be curious about this boy you keep telling them about~" Akeno teased, and Rias looked slightly flustered, has she been telling her family about me?
Oh gods what if they hate me?
"Other than training, I wasn't planning on doing much, how about we spar against one another, (Y/N)?" Xenovia offered, and I was more than happy to train against her, since I could use this moment to refine my weapon skills.
"If I get the chance, I will take you up on that offer." I accepted the offer before noticing Azazel, who was in one of the chairs across the walkway from ours. "Is he asleep?"
"He's going into enemy territory while he's asleep?" Koneko examined the sleeping fallen angel, who was now snoring rather loudly. "Goes to show how much faith he has in this alliance."
"Why is he going to hell with us?" I asked, knowing a fallen angel going into hell sounds like the start of a bad joke. "I have nothing against him, but I do find it odd that he'd decided to join us."
"He came with us to train us more intensely, since he actually knows what he's doing." Xenovia explained, and I could follow the logic of why Azazel came with us. "By the way, Rias, why don't you train your pieces more often?
"Because studies are a thing, and overtraining just makes you tired and yields little to no results." Rias explained. "Training this intensively would do no one any good, but I still encourage practice to simply hone one's skills."
"I agree, intensive training could actually be a hindrance if done incorrectly." I commented while Asia yawned. "Is everything alright, Asia, you appear to be tired?"
"Yes, I'm okay, thank you for asking." Asia rubbed one of her eyes sleepily, and judging from the barely noticeable bags under her eyes, she was tired.
"Asia, while we are riding on the train, I must request that you get some rest." I asked the girl, and for me to be requesting something of someone is quite rare. "Even I can tell you're tired, so it would be best to get some rest."
"If you say so." Asia closed her eyes and rested her head on my shoulder, I didn't mind however, as long as Asia gets some rest, then it should be fine. "Please wake me up when we get there, (Y/N)."
"I will most certainly do so." I stood perfectly still and tried my best not to wake the small girl up.
"You know, she pulled several all-nighters for your sake." Rias informed me, and I was curious as to why. "She asked for some notes from that Ayako girl in your class for some notes on surgery, and she's been studying those notes to make herself a better healer. Since you're no longer using your immortality, and plan on making yourself the tank of our group, Asia wants to be ready to heal you at a minute's notice."
"That is quite thoughtful of her." I reached towards Mule, which lied in front of me, and pulled out my selkie's coat to wrap it around Asia, making it look like a quilt. "Though I'm surprised she took initiative and talked to Ayako, given how Ayako is."
"Speaking of Talented Course students, I was planning on recruiting them into my Peerage, but Sirzechs told me I can only recruit one of you, so I decided to go with you." Rias sighed in slight disappointment. "My plan was to recruit Yasuke as a bishop, Rengoku as a knight, you as a rook, Ayako as a pawn, Onihime as a pawn, Kenshiro as a pawn, Kankuro as a pawn, and Mukuro as a pawn. Well, all of that was before Issei was discovered to have a sacred gear, so my plans went out the window."
"I figured that was the case, given their invaluable talents, they would be quite powerful." I agreed with Rias' desires, but I understood all of us talented course members together is way too scary. "To make up for that inability to recruit my classmates, I'm trying to learn all of their talents."
"I am aware of that, but there was a reason I wanted to recruit Mukuro, Rengoku, Ayako, and Yasuke in particular." Rias began listing off reasons. "Mukuro served in the military and was one of the best, so her experience is invaluable. Rengoku also appears to have made his own weapon style even Kiba can't compete against, which is called Singing Predator. Ayako's precision with her knife is unrivaled, and her capabilities for healing alone could rival Asia's own healing abilities. As for Yasuke, there's a specific magic that I think he will exceed in."
"I managed to get some notes from Rengoku before I left." Xenovia handed me a notebook. "To be honest, it focuses more on polearms like axes and spears, and I learned everything I could one swordsmanship from this. Another thing, is he always that positive?"
"He claims he was like that in his past life too, so I'm assuming that's a yes." I commented on Rengoku's behavior as I grabbed the notes.
"Excuse me Princess Rias, you are free to talk to members of your peerage, but I must scan the newcomers to your peerage." A man who looked to be in his late 50's walked towards our seats with a scanning device of some kind.
"Sure thing." I would have stood up, but it would have woken up Asia. "Is it possible for her to be asleep for this scan? I'm unfamiliar with this, so please forgive my lack of knowledge."
"I understand, and don't worry, I just need to scan the evil pieces within each of you." This man appeared to be the conductor of the train, judging from his attire. "All of your personal information is etched into each piece upon your reincarnation."
"Understandable, thank you for explaining it to me." I thanked the man while he scanned me with the device, getting a light beep to signal it was done before moving onto Asia.
"(Y/N), this is Reynaldo, the conductor of this train and a servant of the Gremory household." Rias introduced Reynaldo to me, and I shook his hand from my spot as he scanned Xenovia. "Reynaldo, this is (Y/N), the Ultimate Immortal."
"Honor to meet you Sir (Y/N)." Reynaldo added a 'sir' to my name, and I felt honored about that while he scanned Issei. "Okay, I've confirmed all of you as reincarnated devils, you're free to enter the devil's realm."
"What about Azazel?" I focused on the sleeping fallen angel, who was woken up by Reynaldo.
"I'm allowed to be here, I just need to show the right papers." Azazel reached into his shirt pocket and handed Reynaldo his identification papers. "Why wouldn't I be allowed here?"
"You're the leader of the fallen angels entering territory full of people who would love to see you dead." I answered in my usual blunt tone.
"It was a rhetorical question, but you do raise a valid point." Azazel sweatdropped as the dark windows were now showing some light, signaling that we were arriving at our destination.
"That's where we'll be staying?" I pointed at the large castle-like mansion that was the only visible building in the area, and Rias nodded confidently. "It's a nice place, when was it built? It's architecture seems both old and new at the same time."
"It gets renovated every once in a while, just so it looks new, but I'm glad you like it." Rias explained the small history of the castle, and I nodded to show my understanding. "While we're here, there's a meeting tomorrow where I have to attend along with all the young heirs to noble families, like Sona."
"I'll escort you just in case Riser decides to come." I offered, but Rias declined my offer, I was afraid I did something wrong to piss her off, but then she explained why she declined.
"I would love for you to come with me, but none of us are allowed to bring any of our pieces with us." Rias explained as she placed a hand on my head to make me feel better, she must have noticed my mood change. "Don't worry (Y/N), if anything happens to me, I'll call your name. You will be in the next room, so you should be able to hear me."
"Understood." I decided to change the subject to one I noticed. "Also, do you think I'm like a dog? Everyone seems to keep calling me a 'dog'?"
"You radiate the same energy as a Saint Bernard, so maybe that's why." Issei turned around from his seat and was now facing me.
"I honestly thought he was more like a Mastiff." Kiba joined in, followed by Gasper adding his own opinion.
"He reminds me of an Irish Wolfhound." Gasper continued the trend of calling me different dog breeds, despite the fact I am not a dog, but more like a seal.
"I asked why everyone keeps calling me a dog, not what dog breed I am."
(A/N: Happy Saint Patrick's Day, unless you don't know what that holiday is, in which case it's just us going nuts with the color green. While I'm on the subject, there were never any snakes in Ireland since 461. It's likely that the myth is just St.Patrick kicking out paganism, or in Ireland's case, the Celtic religion (but even than that failed because of reasons that are way too complicated to explain in an author's note). Another thing I find odd is the "Luck of the Irish" saying, because as I'm sure some of you are aware, Irish luck in history is fucking terrible, especially with neighbors.
