Chapter 24: The Talented Course

(Your POV)
It was currently the next day, and I didn't sleep a wink last night because of my studying. Despite this, I was still studying, even drinking coffee. Plus it was easy to stay awake in my classes because it was loud. Due to the diverse talents of my specialized classes, we used a room that was roughly the size of an indoor gym to house the variety of equipment. There were ramps, surgical tables complete with surgical tools, wood training dummies, weights, and many more objects. Due to my talent relying on my blessing, I try to just say that I earned my talent for being durable as hell. Still, that didn't stop me from learning as much as I could from my classmates. Right now, I am getting tested on human anatomy by Ayako by using a marker and a life-sized mannequin while Onihime watches.

"Hamstring."

I drew a line through the back parts of the knee on the mannequin as quickly as I could.

"Gutshot."

I drew a single dot where the stomach should be on the mannequin.

"Skull crack."

I drew a single dot on the mannequin's upper forehead.

"Well done."

Ayako was small for a third year, only being around Gasper's height at best. Ayako also has dirty blonde hair, but a portion of it turned gray due to stress that was placed on her in the past. Ayako's hair was fluffy like Rias' and reached her mid-back, there was even an ahoge on her head. Her skin was pale and her gray eyes were large and round, and that was complemented by her thick, circular glasses. She always wore a scowl, and her uniform usually had blood stains on it. She had on dark red medical gloves that had her sleeves tucked into them and covering her small frame is a black apron that had blood stains on them. I don't know whose blood it, and frankly, I don't wish to know. Right now, she was holding a clipboard and pen.

"Your marks were messy, so I'd advise finding a way to steady your hands, but they should get the job done." Ayako gave me the piece of paper she was writing on, which had a B on it to show my grade. "There's a certain point during your heart's circulation where you're most precise, use that moment to make those cuts."

"To do what exactly?" Onihime asked with a slightly worried expression, since these people don't know my life as a devil, Onihime must think I'm in a gang or something. "You know what, I don't really care, how's my old bike working out for you?"

Onihime was the exact opposite of Ayako, and her height is a give away. She's a couple inches taller than Rias but still much shorter than me. Her messy, black hair was in a pixie cut, making it easy to see her amber eyes. She was tan since she likes being outdoors. Unlike every other girl at this school, she wore a male uniform because it was better for stunts and didn't show off anything when she's in the air. She didn't wear a tie though, she had the two few buttons open to reveal her neck and clavicle. Her overall appearance makes her super popular with the girls at the school because she's seen as a second prince, second only to Kiba.

"It's making getting around town a lot easier, so thank you for giving it to me." I thanked Onihime, who grinned in response to this. "If there is anything I could do to repay you, do not hesitate to let me know."

"There is actually." Onihime answered, and I listened intently. "I saw you hanging out with a small blonde girl who looked super adorable yesterday, I was wondering if you could introduce me to her?"

"Adorable blonde girl..." I thought to myself, and the image of Asia appeared in mind, and she fit the description, cute and blonde. "You mean Asia?"

"No not her, I was talking about the other girl, the one who's super pale and has short hair." Onihime corrected, and I recalled Gasper, I hope I don't crash Onihime's dreams when I say this...

"Oh that's Gasper, he's a boy." I answered bluntly, and I saw the light in Onihime's eyes disappear, she's always felt insecure about not being cute, and now she just learned a boy is cuter than her. "Would you still like to meet him? He's very shy and prefers to hide in his room."

"Like Ayako?" Onihime used her thumb to point at the vivisectionist, who was using a towel to wipe off the marks I put in the mannequin.

"Rude."

"MERRY CHRISTMAS!"

It was March, and despite that, the Ultimate Secret Santa, Nico, was always in the festive spirit. Her height was average, being slightly taller than Asia but still smaller than Xenovia. Her fluffy white hair was in a braid that reached around her head to end on her shoulder. Her red eyes were always full of excitement, and complimented the Santa hat she wore. Due to her talent, she's always been kind of scary in my opinion. She could tell what you want, your moral alignment, fit into small spaces, and apparently lives off of cookies and milk alone. In fact, I was genuinely surprised to learn she's not a devil.

"Nico, it's March, learn to relax." Ayako advised our festive friend, who winked and pointed at her pockets, and all of us checked our pockets in sync to see something was there. "Don't put stuff in our pockets."

"Oh sweet, cookies." Onihime checked her pockets and she got a small bag of cookies, as did the Ayako, but I got something I was not expecting, a box of condoms. "Having dirty thoughts, aren't you (Y/N)?"

"Not really, I kind of wanted a surgical knife." I ignored the stress about the condoms and put them back in my pocket. "Why did I get condoms?"

"I know it's not what you wanted, but it's what you NEEDED." Nico explained, and I had no idea what she meant. "I noticed that you've been hanging out with Rias, Akeno, Koneko, and those two new girls."

"No no, she has a point." Ayako pointed out, and I sighed in annoyance, I can't explain my position as rook/protector, because they don't know what devils are. "By the way, they seem to be flirting with you, what is your relationship with the girls?"

"That's a good question." Was my response, and all three girls looked to be in disbelief. "What about you three, surely you all like someone if you ask me?"

"I personally like Kiba!" Nico answered, and that answer was kind of expected, given how Kiba is the most popular guy at school. "I still have yet to give him a single present, and with god as my witness, I WILL give Kiba a present!"

"Wait, do you like Kiba romantically or not?" Onihime asked, and Nico tilted her head slightly, confused.

"Of course I like him, Kiba is a genuine mystery and actually appears genuine, unlike most people who lie, Kiba is honest." Nico explained as the door to the classroom opened up and someone walked in. "Plus he's super fast and skilled , he even managed to catch me trying to sneak a present into his pocket. I have never spotted such a worthy foe before in my life, so that's why I want to give him a present!"

"Give who a present?" Kiba stood tall behind Nico, surprising her into jumping into Onihime's arms. "Sorry if I scared you, I was asked to get (Y/N) by Rias, it's for club business."

"It's fine, and I'm still trying to figure out what you'd want." Nico's odd behavior made Kiba look confused, so I decided to go with him and see what was going on. "I'm not giving up on your present, Yuto Kiba!"

Kiba wore his confused expression until we left the room, then Kiba sighed and laughed quietly to himself. He didn't say anything, but I could see a slight smile on Kiba's face as I followed him back to the clubroom. The walk was silent except for the sound of my new boots hitting the ground. Another thing I did last night was modify Kazekami and turned it into spurs for my boots and metallic heels. I also started wearing a watch that tracked how many steps I've taken, because if my theory is correct, every step would give Kazekami a charge. Currently, I have 3,000 charges.

"Who was that girl (Y/N)?" Kiba asked, and I informed him of Nico's name and title. "Ultimate Secret Santa Huh? That explains why she's obsessed with giving presents to people."

"Why do you ask, has she been scaring you?" I asked, Nico does have a habit of reading people's mind. "She can read minds, just to get people presents they deserve."

"Reading minds, are you sure about that?" Kiba seems to have trouble believing me about Nico's seemingly supernatural powers.

"She scares me." I deadpanned, and Kiba sweatdropped before I spoke up again. "So what did Rias need?"

"Rias wanted to ask you about some preparation ideas, since you seem to know something about strategy." Kiba informs me, and I was genuinely worried he hit his head somewhere, I'm not a smart guy.

"I may not know much, but I can help with basic things."

The two of us exited the school building and I took the time to examine my surroundings. The forest would make for an excellent ambush area for an enemy who knows how to use it, I have some bear traps and caltrops, so I should fill the area with traps that explicitly destroy the cover, like a tripwire that shoots flames. The old school building will also be uninhabited because all of ORC will be at the meeting. Well, Gasper's probably going to be staying in his room as per usual, so I should probably place something there.

"(Y/N), your eyes are going all over the place." Kiba pointed out, forcing my attention back to him. "By the way, you didn't know much about military stuff like tactics or martial arts before becoming a devil, so where did you learn your skills?"

"I learned them from my classmate, Mukuro, in the Talented Course." I answered as I looked at the building we just left. "There are 16 of us in this year alone, but there's 32 of us in the first and second years total. I personally think their talents would be more useful than mine."

"I have my doubts about that." Kiba looked at the building. "Still, going out of your comfort zone to learn something new is quite impressive, but why do you do it?"

"Simply because my talent is literally just being a tool to protect someone, if I want to protect everyone, I need to learn more skills to better myself." I answered, causing Kiba to laugh.

"I'm starting to see why all the girls in ORC like you, though I'm surprised all the other girls put you in the friendzone even though you never asked anyone out." Kiba mentioned this thing called 'friendzone', but I had no idea what it was. "They don't even get to know you."

"Friend zone?" I asked, and now it was Kiba who looked confused. "Is that a zone where you can make friends? Please show me how to reach this friend zone you speak of."

"That's not what a friend zone is." Kiba informed me, and I looked down in embarrassment, I was kind of slow in this sense. "Wait, aren't you surprised I just told you all the girls in ORC like you?"

"I already knew." I answered, the subjects I'm slow in and excelling In appear to be random subjects. "I'm just not sure what to do. I can't pick a favorite among them because they're all nice, and picking one would seem unfair to the others. Plus I'm not very good at romantic things, I've never had anyone like me like they do before, much less seven people at once."

"You know, you could try becoming the Harem King." Kiba suggests, and I realized that he was joking. "I'm joking, I don't see you as the type to actively seek a harem, you're more like the kind of guy who goes where the wind takes you."

With that said, the two of us reached the ORC clubroom and we walked in to see Xenovia lying on the couch, Rias sitting at her desk, Asia talking with Akeno, and Koneko eating some small colored chocolates with the letter W on them. When she saw me, Asia smiled, as did the other girls, but Asia's was the most obvious.

"Hey (Y/N), please take a seat." Rias gestured to the chairs, and I noticed a small map of the campus was on the table. "I need your modern way of thinking for a moment."

"Modern way of thinking?"

"Yes, you seem to exceed to Guerrilla Warfare." Rias explained as I sat down next to Asia. "Like in the battle against Riser's peerage, you drew most of the pieces into the forest, where there was thick cover you were familiar with. You also had a series of traps set in there, and only you knew how to properly utilize your surroundings."

"I understand, so what would you like for me to say?" I asked as I examined the map on the table. "Are we planning an ambush, a fight, or are we just keeping a proper defense should things go wrong?"

"Just a proper defense." Rias walked over to the other side of me. "Sona and I are thinking about placing a 30 meter diameter barrier focused around the conference room. What do you think (Y/N)?"

"Is there anyway for the barrier to focus on the entire school instead of being only a dome?" I asked, I'm not too experienced in magic, especially ones involving barriers. "The school is a good place to take care of enemies to someone who knows how to use it correctly, and if we make the dome too big, it might also envelop the forest, which is a good place for people to hide in so they could get inside the dome."

"Good idea, I'll talk with Sona to have the dome cover just the new school building." Rias complimented me, and I felt warm inside, I have heard that praise can make people feel like that. "What about traps, any suggestions as to where to put them?"

"Magic traps can be invisible, yes?" I asked, and Rias nodded to confirm this. "Then I'd suggest we put traps like bear traps in places with thick cover, like the forest and gardens. Meanwhile, we put magic land mines around open areas, like the courtyard."

"I knew I could rely on you for defense, thanks (Y/N)." Rias thanked me before rubbing the top of my head for seemingly no reason, when I was about to ask her about it, she winked. "By the way, we still have some time before the meeting, so feel free to relax until the meeting starts."

I took out my spellbook to try memorizing the easiest spells in the book, they were all pretty easy, but I decided to learn the more difficult spells because they were more useful than those spells, but now that I actually look at these spells, they could seem useful for stealth missions by creating distractions. Plus these spells don't need any components, magic energy, or chanting, I just need to say their name. Some time passed and I figured I should let Gasper know about the meeting, just in case he wanted to join. I got up from my chair and walked to his room, I knocked on the door, and Gasper allowed for me to enter.

"Oi, Gasper, there's a meeting between the three factions today." I explained as I opened the door to reveal Gasper hugging a rabbit stuffed animal. "Would you like to come with us or are you planning on staying here?"

"I'd prefer to stay here if that's okay..." Gasper explained, and I remembered I got him a present, so I walked up to him and pulled out a bunch of bags full of chips. "Why do you have those?"

"I wanted to give you some kind of reward for your progress, and I had no idea what kind of chips you liked, so I got one of each." I handed the chips to Gasper along with a piece of paper. "My phone number is written on this piece of paper, so you can call me should something happen."

"Thank you." Gasper thanked me as he took all of the chips, I guess he's not picky about them. "For both the chips and helping me train my sacred gear."

"Of course, friends help each other, no?" I asked, and Gasper nodded before hiding back into his cardboard box, and I left the room to redo the seal on it to the best of my ability.

"Hey (Y/N)." Koneko greeted, making me jump a bit because I didn't hear any of her footsteps. "I want to ask you something, what is your motivation for being nice? To make yourself look good? To gain help from others?"

"Because being mean makes me feel bad." I answered bluntly as I finished redoing the seal. "Why do you ask? Did I accidently hurt you in some way, I'm sorry if I did."

"No, I was just asking because you always seem too nice, and I find it hard to believe how nice you are sometimes." Koneko explained, do I really give off that kind of vibe? "Usually when people are too nice, they want something, so I was just wondering what you want."

"I just want to be nice because..." I couldn't think of what else to say, being nice just feels right to me. "...I feel like it I suppose."

"You're an odd person, but I suppose that's what makes you so interesting." Koneko turned around and walked down the hallway, and I proceeded to follow her because we were going in the same direction.

Koneko and I reached the clubroom to see Issei was now there, and all of us were getting ready for the meeting that was going to happen in a couple minutes. I had Genbu in the corner of the room should something happen, and I would have brought it with me, but Rias suggested against it because bringing a weapon like that could be seen as a threat from the devils. Now I'm starting to see why everyone used magic here, still, I had a combat knife, desert eagle, magic boots, and a secret fourth weapon on me right now, so it's okay I guess. Once we were all ready, we all began walking to the meeting.

(A/N: It's not final yet, but I was thinking of adding Onihime, Ayako, Nico, and possibly some other students from the talented course into someone's peerage. The reason why is because A. Their talents could be useful, and B. I was thinking about shipping them with some of the guys lie, Gasper and Kiba. My main plan is Gasper x Valerie or Onihime, and Kiba x Nico or Tsubaki. Does anybody like Tsubaki, not judging, I just wanna know before hand? Also, some of you are wondering why I'm giving them ships when they're often overlooked. Well making ships is fun for me. Back on the original subject, I might not add them into a peerage because, idk?
