Chapter 2: First Mission
(Your POV)
I was currently swimming close to the ocean floor of the ocean water that was next to my lighthouse. It was a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon, so I decided to don my wetsuit and goggles to swim in the ocean that my lighthouse overlooked. There was a lot of trash on the ocean floor, so I was currently picking up the trash as I swam. The beautiful blue ocean was only complimented by the soft sand of the ocean floor that was decorated with many stones that were common around the cliff. To explain the geography of the lighthouse, my house is located on a piece of land that was outstretched towards the ocean and was on one side of a large gulf that was decorated with a port in the middle. The land around my lighthouse was kind of like a cliff, so it just dropped into the ocean instead of sliding into it like a sandy beach would. Around the cliff part were many rocks, but the rocks became less common the further you went into the ocean. The coast around my side of the gulf was rocky and had waves crashing against them. This often resulted in the stone ground around the lighthouse becoming wet, but hey, I enjoyed the water ever since I was little.
My seal friend wasn't nearby, but that's okay, she's often away getting food or something. I decided to resurface and check if anyone is at my house to either deliver something or...Okay, just to deliver stuff. My two other friends just keep me around to take the blame, which fails every time. Issei is the only person who actually visits from time to time, but he has a date today with someone named Yuma. I was happy for him, whether or not he deserves a date is debatable, but he's happy and that's all that matters. I resurfaced with my trash bag full of trash, placing it on the rocks before pulling myself up. To my surprise, someone who wasn't a delivery man actually showed up, it was Kiba. He was waiting in front of the front door wearing a white collared shirt, khakis, and sandals. He was just about to leave before he saw me.
"(Y/N), there you are, I was sent here to grab you for the current assignment." Kiba walked towards me as I pulled the trash bag off the rocks and slung it over my back. "What's that?"
"This is trash, forgive me for leaving you out here." I bowed apologetically to my ally. "Let me throw this stuff away and I'll make some tea."
"It's fine (Y/N), but where were you?" Kiba asked as I walked to a nearby trash can, putting the trash bag in the trash can before closing it.
"I was picking up trash in the ocean." I bluntly informed my friend while removing the goggles from my eyes and pushing my hair out of my face. "So how long were you out here?"
"I was out here for half an hour, and I will admit the scenery made it go by rather quickly." Kiba announced as seagulls passed us overhead. "I don't think I saw you pop up from the ocean once?"
"Of course you didn't, I was under the water the whole time." I unzipped one of the pockets of my wetsuits and pulled out a key, a key that I used to unlock the house. "Feel free to come in."
(Behold! A nice piece of art and an accurate depiction of where you live)
"Thank you." Kiba said as the two of us entered the house, and I grabbed a large towel that I kept next to the front door to dry myself off. "So you were under the water the entire time for a whole thirty minutes?"
"Yeah, before I became a devil, my limit was 45 minutes." I dried off my hair first as I explained, and my statement surprised Kiba. "It is still rather hard to believe all the events yesterday occurred."
"Don't worry, it takes some getting used to." Kiba reassured me as I walked through the living area towards the kitchen.
(This is just a picture of the layout of the house, your room is up the ladder and the kitchen is on the other side of that doorway)
"Feel free to take a seat, I'll come out with a meal to make up for my mistake in a moment." I walked into the kitchen and pulled out a teapot that was decorated with images of various fish on it.
It took a couple seconds to finish the tea and small chocolate chip cookies I made the day before, but I have a guest at my house and I must be respectful plus hospitable! Once the tea was finished, I put it on a tray along with two tea cups which were decorated in the same way as my teapot. I took the tray into the living room and placed it on the table before pouring a cup of tea for myself and Kiba. With that said, the two of us began discussing the meet while Kiba sat on the couch and I took the chair.
"Thank you, and as for Rias' assignment, how good are you at sneaking around?" Kiba thanked me before going back to the original subject of his visit.
"I blend into a crowd surprisingly well, why do you ask?" I mentioned before taking a sip of my tea, hopeful that Kiba likes herbal tea.
"As you may know from the rumors around the school, Issei finally managed to land a date." Kiba reminds me, but I didn't hear that through the rumors, I heard it from Issei. "We have reason to believe that this girl, Yuma, is actually a fallen angel who will kill him for his sacred gear."
"So what do I have to do to protect Issei?" I became a lot more serious after hearing a threat on my friend's life, I will not let him die on my hands.
"Keep an eye on him for now, but don't do anything drastic like kill Yuma without seeing her transform first." Kiba warms me, which is understandable, if I mess up and Yuma isn't a fallen angel at all, an innocent girl could get killed because of me. "By the way, I know you're the ultimate shield and all, but do you have any ways of harming people?"
"Yeah, let me go grab them first." I gently placed the tea cup on the table and walked over to the table. "I'm not sure if it's illegal here or not, but my father managed to bring a couple things from America."
"What do you mean?" Kiba asked as I climbed up the ladder and into the storage area, allowing me to reach into one particular box and pull out two iron objects.
"This Desert Eagle and combat knife obviously." I made myself visible from the storage area and showed off my two objects. "I know I may not be suited for this magic stuff, but I'll make do with these for now."
"I should have known it would be something like this the moment you said 'America'..." Kiba sweatdropped, hey, as long as I can protect everyone, I'll use whatever means necessary.
"But will it get the job done?"
"Possibly."
(Timeskip, brought to you by fish swimming past the camera)
I was at the mall, sitting on a bench next to a tree and watching as Yuma and Issei had their date. I was wearing my usual parka like a jacket, a (favorite band) shirt, dark gray gym pants, and sandals. I also had my Desert Eagle in my pants covered by my shirt on my side, and the combat knife was in my boot. I made sure not to draw attention to myself, so I made it look like I was on my phone, taking selfies, when in reality I used the camera to look behind me in the clothing store Issei and his date were going to.
Through my eyes, they looked like your ideal couple, helping pick each other's clothes and laughing together. I would have been envious of such a close relationship with another living being, but it was possible that Yuma was a fallen angel, and so I needed to keep my guard up. I got confused looks from people, but considering there was weirder stuff going on around them, they ignored more. Like some girl with a funky hair style suplexing some guy because he spoke to her friend, who was a red haired little girl with a witch's hat. At the same time, another girl who had blonde hair and music note shaped clips was trying to get her companion to stop suplexing the poor guy.
Distractions aside, I realized that Issei and Yuma were now on the move. I got up from my chair and proceeded to walk in the same direction as them. I made sure to make it look like I was looking at the store's windows to make the act more convincing. Yuma and Issei entered a food court, so I decided to enter another store in order to not draw any attention to myself. Lucky for me, the store had a large window that gave me a view of the food court. I made sure to hide behind some of the products.
I took a moment to take in my surroundings, realizing I was in a sports and activity shop that sold sports equipment, camping supplies, guns, arrows, and even some traps. I decided to make it look like I was looking at a net, when in reality I was watching Yuma feed Issei a piece of cake. I would be lying if I said I wasn't jealous of the two, but what matters right now is that my friend is happy and alive.
I kept on watching the two like a stalker, and I was honestly pretty disgusted with myself for stalking the two, but it was for Issei's safety, and my master gave me orders, so I must make her proud. Still, I decided to get something that could help me while I was here, so I brought a large net, a pair of binoculars, a pair of punching gloves, and some tape. The clerk was concerned as for why I was getting these objects, but I just told him I was running errands for some people.
I stayed hidden on Yuma and Issei's trail, following them as they walked out of the mall and towards the park. I had to hide in the bushes, but that changed when I saw a fence that had barbed wire on it. I tore off pieces of the barbed wire and used my knife to cut off the rest, which isn't a good idea unless you have good strength. I wrapped the barbed wire I got on the punching gloves, turning them into good weapons.
Once that was done, I rushed back into the park and hid in nearby bushes. I made sure not to make any noise and checked the ground in front of me for any branches that could break if I stepped on them. I readied my Desert Eagle and grabbed my net while my boxing gloves hung at my side by the rope. I had the safety on, to make sure I don't misfire, but what I heard next set me made me stay true to my name as the Ultimate Shield.
"I had fun Yuma, I hope we can do this again." Issei said as he stood in front of a fountain alongside Yuma.
"Say Issei, would you die for me?" Yuma asked, making Issei slightly flustered and look away for a moment, followed by a sinister grin from Yuma.
"Let me think..." Issei said, all while Yuma's clothes began disappearing, just as Issei turned around. "Breasticles! Those are breasts!"
"I said, would you die for me?" Yuma asked as she summoned a pink spear that appeared to be made of light.
(A/N: Fashion disaster alert)
I flicked the safety off.
"Get down Issei!" I shouted as I emerged from my hiding spot with my Desert Eagle already firing at Yuma.
I threw my net at Yuma to distract her, allowing me to shoot three bullet holes into Yuma's left wing. She was too distracted with the pain that she let go of the light spear and dropped it, giving me an opportunity to grab Issei to run away. I knew I couldn't out run her, so my next best solution was to hide Issei. I came up with the genius idea to toss him into a nearby tree while Yuma was still distracted, accidently getting the boy stuck on a branch.
Now that Issei was out of Yuma's way, I signaled for him to be quiet by putting a finger to my lips before giving him a two fingered salute. I pulled out my combat knife and went back to Yuma, who was getting over the pain. She looked furious, but that doesn't matter, my goal right now is to kill her right now, so I started running towards the fallen angel with my combat knife in my spare hand. Lucky for me, she can't fly because my net from earlier wrapped around her wings and in the time it would take her to free her wings, I can kill her.
"You bastard!" Yuma shouted in fury, thank the gods she didn't see me throw Issei. "He was within my grasp, how dare you get in my way!"
"He's my friend, and I am a shield." I explained whilst getting into a combat stance, with the Desert Eagle pointed at Yuma. "Nothing more, nothing less. Oh, there's also something called 'Bro Code', and I wish to uphold it."
Yuma tried summoning and throwing one of those spears at me, but I managed to dodge it by side stepping. She has a good throwing arm, so I can't afford to slack off. I shot four more bullets at Yuma, but she managed to dodge and launch another spear at me. I dodged this one by side stepping in the other direction. I shot three bullets at Yuma, but only two came out. I quickly realized I ran out of ammo, so I dropped my gun and put on one of my boxing gloves.
Yuma shot another spear at me, and it scratched my cheek, but I kept on pushing on. With every spear she threw at me, I became angrier and more furious with her. Spears were shot at me in a frenzy, and I managed to dodge most of the damage from the spears, but some managed to hurt me. I got scratched on my arms, legs, torso, neck, and face. I didn't care though, she tried to kill my friend, so she's gonna die tonight!
Once I was close enough, I punched Yuma in the stomach, causing blood to come out and allowing me to knock the fallen angel over. She fell on her back and tried getting up, but I held her down by the neck and raised my knife above her. I attempted to pierce her forehead, but I heard a familiar sound before the blade made contact. Yuma flinched for imminent death, but it never came, I was frozen when I heard that sound.
It was the sound of my mother's song she used to sing to the sea before she left, it sounded more distorted this time, signaling she was trying to stop me from something. Don't tell me she wanted to stop me from killing Yuma? She just tried to kill one of my only friends, I don't want that. I don't want to be alone anymore.
I stood up straight and dropped the boxing glove and combat knife, using my free hands to clasp my now hurting head. I walked away from Yuma and became desperate for the song to return to normal. I don't want my only memory of the times my mother to be distorted like this. I was desperate for the distorted singing to stop. I screamed for it to stop to no avail, and I even saw Yuma stand back up and pick up my knife. Yuma now stood beside me, with my knife ready to stab me, but the stab never came.
The song finally stopped to reveal that Akeno managed to use some sort of lightning to shock Yuma, rendering her unconscious. I was glad that the distorted song was silent, but I realized that I had failed the first task my master gave me. I truly was just a failure, no wonder my mother left and my father doesn't stick around longer than a couple days. I quickly regained my composure, but the sustained injuries made it difficult. I noticed Rias walking towards me with Kiba and Koneko close behind.
"(Y/N) are you alright?" Rias asked before quickly noticing all the injuries I Now had on my body. "Oh my goodness, I am so sorry, I promise this won't happen again."
"It's fine, I swore to be your shield, so I'm staying true to my role." I honestly deserved these injuries, not like I'm a good person to begin with.
"No, this is unacceptable, whenever you come across another fallen angel, you must get backup immediately." Rias ordered as she cupped my cheeks with her hands to keep me focused on her. "Promise me you won't do something reckless like that again."
"I promise..." I felt tired and surprised, why does my master care about my well being? Either way, I accidentally leaned into her shoulder because I suddenly lost feeling in my body. "Forgive me, I'm going to have to rest now...I'm sorry for failing you."
"Get some rest (Y/N), and don't apologize, you did you best." Rias comforted me, and to my surprise, she even wrapped her arms around me gently. "I'm proud of you, and we will not abandon you."
I felt my lips curve into a smile of joy before I lost consciousness.
(A/N: To be honest, I'm not exactly sure if the MC is a simp at this point. The way I tried designing him was to be selfless to a fault, have abandonment issues, being fiercely loyal, and socially awkward as fuck. Like the rest of the DxD cast, his true past will be revealed over time, potentially even with his own arc. For the record, this is another MC I'm proud of because he actually fits pretty well with the DxD universe. He's not all that special, but just enough to make him capable of becoming something more.
