Chapter 13: Execution
(Issei POV)
I was just relaxing at ORC, looking at chests, playing games, the usual. However, something was off today, (Y/N) wasn't here. Normally I'd be happy when someone who stands between me and titties isn't here, but (Y/N) is a good guy, and I found it odd he wasn't here. Plus it was now Monday, and he usually shows up on Mondays. I would assume he got hit by a car and died, but if he got hit by a car, chances are the car would die. I looked around ORC one more time, noticing Rias was sitting at her desk, distressed as Akeno made tea. Koneko and Kiba were playing 'Go Fish' on the table while Asia watched
"So...is no one going to ask where (Y/N) is?" I asked, trying to break the awkward silence between us. "He's pretty hard to miss, on account of him being the tallest person on campus, smells like the ocean, and is usually bleeding because of a severe injury he hasn't noticed."
"I assumed you would know and you just weren't telling us." Rias gave her honest opinion on the matter, but why would I keep (Y/N)'s location a secret? "So you mean to tell us you haven't heard from him all day."
"I think since last Friday would be more accurate." I answered, (Y/N) is usually bad at things involving technology, but him going completely silent is weird. "Maybe we should meet up with him at home, it's possible he got super sick?"
"Maybe we should try calling him?" Asia suggested, and everyone except Asia pulled out their phones. "One at a time though?"
"I'll call him first." I volunteered and searched for the guy I marked as '🐋(Y/N)🐳', by the way, yes the emojis were necessary, I just mark people with emojis I think suit them.
I selected (Y/N)'s contact information and the phone started ringing. Some minutes passed before the phone left me on voicemail, and Akeno was the next person to try calling. Her phone went on for a couple minutes but it went to voicemail too. Next up was Rias, we waited again and this time, the phone picked up by the person who answered wasn't (Y/N), it was (Y/N)'s step mom. Both she and Rias spoke for a little while before Rias hung up. Judging from the tone of Rias' voice and the determination in her eyes.
"Everyone, we need to go to the docks next to (Y/N)'s house, Natalia fears something happened and Asger knows what."
(Scene change brought to you by a shark swimming past the camera)
(Rias POV)
Once we arrived at the docks, we saw Asger talking to another sailor in desperation. Finally, Asger was on his knees begging for some reason before the sailor finally relented. Asger stood up once again and noticed we arrived, still wearing our school uniforms while Asger wore his sea captain's uniform and Natalia wore a raincoat. A storm was brewing overhead, but Asger insisted we get onto his friend's boat. The boat itself was a medium sized fishing boat, and we were in a hurry. Asger undid all of the ropes as we all got on and Natalia started the boat's engine. Once the ropes were undone, Asger jumped onto the boat and pulled the anchor out of the water. Asger then took command at the wheel and the boat started moving forwards, we were lucky nothing was in the way, because we would have crashed if anything was in the way.
"Asger, What is going on?" I demanded to know as I walked towards the captain's chair, where Asger was piloting the ship. "Where is (Y/N), and why are we going out in a storm?!"
"It's because I have a feeling I know where (Y/N) is, where I met his mother..." Asger sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Gather round everyone, I think it's about time I told you what happened to (Y/N)'s mother."
In response to this, all of us stood around him as he began telling us the tale of him and Ariel. It all started with a prayer at an abandoned temple somewhere in Norway, Asger prayed for a family because he spent all of his life focusing on becoming a sea captain that he had overlooked starting a family. However, the god that heard his prayers was Loki, a particularly malicious god of trickery. To 'help' this poor man, Loki kidnapped a selkie from her home, and that selkie was none other than Ariel, (Y/N)'s mother. Loki threatened to kill Ariel's fiancé if she said anything about her life as a selkie or made Asger unhappy. When they met, Ariel went along with anything Asger wanted, and Asger flat out admitted to not being the smartest man around, since he didn't pick up on any of this. It was also worth noting that Loki stole Ariel's selkie coat to prevent her from leaving, and gave the selkie coat to Asger as a wedding gift.
However, Loki told Asger to never let Ariel know about it and to hide it away the best he could. Still not raising any letting flags get in his way, he did exactly that and married Ariel after a year of being together. After the wedding night, (Y/N) was conceived and born nine months later. To give his family a better life, Asger worked nonstop as a captain, saving up all the money he could to give his family a much better life. That left (Y/N) alone with Ariel, and since Loki never said anything about (Y/N), but she knew if she harmed him, Asger would notice. So she merely pretended (Y/N) never existed, often insulted him, and reminded him of how she never wanted to have him every day of his life. Seven years after (Y/N) was born, Ariel finally found her selkie's coat. Upon finding her cloak, she explained everything to (Y/N) before cursing the seven year old boy and leaving.
"I'm also certain she would use her voice to magically torture (Y/N) when I was away, which would explain how he handles pain very well, but (Y/N) kind of repressed those memories." Asger finished up his story, which was kind of sad. "I'm also willing to bet she played a major role in why (Y/N) thinks he's such a worthless piece of garbage despite being the best son ever."
"Wait, then how do you know all of this?" I asked, (Y/N) and him haven't been in contact until recently, so (Y/N) couldn't have told Asger about this. "All of this sounds like stuff only (Y/N) would know."
"Well considering my ship was crashed by a bunch of sirens luring my crew towards the rocks, I think it's safe to say I put two and two together." Asger answered, which was a flimsy explanation at best. "Plus Odin explained everything to me while I was in prison, so yeah, blame Loki."
"You seem very calm about this..." Issei pointed out, but then Ashore dropped the facade and started yelling in a pissed off voice.
"I am not calm, these fuckers stole my son even though he did nothing wrong!" Asger suddenly pulled out a pair of dual shotguns. "He's a good son who's trying his best. The fucker who should pay is Loki! I asked for a family not whatever the fuck this is!"
"I'm glad to see the usage of guns run in the family." Kiba sweatdropped as the rain started pouring hard on top of us, what should we do about the rain?"
"Nothing, the island where we met is nearby!" Asger shouted as Issei finally asked a question that he was holding in this entire time.
"So...What is a selkie Anyways?" Issei asked, ruining the mood and forcing Akeno to explain what a selkie was.
"Selkies are people who have seal skin they can slip on and off to turn into a seal." Akeno explained calmly as rough waves began rocking the ship back and forth. "They also have magical voices that can cause light side effects to anyone who hears them. Though I feel kind of dumb for not thinking anything, considering how attached he was to his parka."
"So what does any of this have to do with (Y/N)?" Asia asked, causing Asger to claim down and explain the current dilemma.
"You see, the people of the sea can't get to me because I try to keep my distance from the water, and I usually wear a heavy disguise when I do go out." Asger explained, which I guess would make him more suspicious if he got arrested. "As for why they're targeting (Y/N), well as it turns out, Ariel is fucking nobility, as if Loki's trick wasn't bad enough."
"Wait So Loki kidnapped a princess and effectively put all the blame on you?" Kiba asked, finding all of this kind of hard to believe. "Why can't they punish him instead of (Y/N)?"
"Because it's likely that they see (Y/N), a bastard in their eyes, as the true heir to whatever throne Ariel has." I threw in, but (Y/N) doesn't seem like the type to want the throne. "So it's likely they'll want to dispose of him so he can't take the throne..."
I could feel pain in my chest at the thought of (Y/N) dying, I know (Y/N) acts strong for all of us, but even he admits that it's possible to kill him. I swore to myself I wouldn't let (Y/N) die. (Y/N) has always protected us, so now it's time for us, time for me, to return the favor. I thought back to every instance where (Y/N) protected me, from the time he swore his allegiance to me to the battle against Riser. (Y/N) has always taken on impossible odds and survived. He goes through so much pain just to give the rest of us an edge in a fight. It would be horribly wrong for us to just leave him to die.
"Say, did none of us bring that shield of us?"
"None of us can lift it."
(Scene change brought to you by lightning blocking out the camera)
(Your POV)
I was now in the courtroom of an island city that was under my step father's rule, but this courtroom was currently on trial. In case you're wondering who the accused was, I was the accused man fending for himself. It was pretty weird, considering I'm only wearing my parka, wetsuit, my swim shorts, and the shirt Koneko got me. On the other side was my mother, Ariel, who had orange red hair and looked around the same age as my father. She was also wearing her selkie's coat, which was infinitely much more luxurious and extra than my own coat. Unlike me, so she actually had a lawyer helping her with this case. In case it wasn't obvious, the courtroom was rigged against me. Why was it like this? My father committed an 'unforgivable' crime by accident, and I refused to give up his location to these people, so now I'm being put on trial for random bullshit. As if that wasn't enough, Nancy and Lucy, my mother's daughters she had when she remarried, were with her.
"So you're not denying your father raped Mistress Ariel?" The lawyer was in my face, putting shit in my mouth, but I stayed true to my word.
"No, I told you they were married and my father didn't know she was a selkie, nor did he know about any of this." I stood my ground stubbornly, thanks to my immense pain tolerance, they can't really torture me. "My mother had no choice but to comply because Loki threatened to kill her husband if she said anything, so what could she have done?"
""But you're not denying she was powerless to stop her husband?" The lawyer was getting on my nerves, but I didn't punch him just in case that ends up being a bad idea.
"If she wanted to have her fiancé killed, then she would have said no." I answered, trying to get this lawyer off my back, I would like to correct this story before I get put in prison.
"You're only insisting this false story because you're the result of this gods forsaken mistake!" The lawyer shouted, and I crossed my arms, trying my best to keep my anger in check. "As the judge and jury can see, this man is clearly guilty, insisting that I'm wrong."
"The court has come to the decision that the defendant is guilty!" The judge slammed his gavel on the wood of his desk, but I wonder what my punishment will be. "The punishment will be put to death by the firing squad."
Well I can't say that was unexpected.
I could feel another one of those fish guards put handcuffs on my hands, but the metal was so weak I could easily break it. Still, I went along with it as the people watching the court started cursing my name. In response to this, I laughed a cold and dry laugh. Call this 'the insanity before death', but I didn't fear anything these people can do to me. I do not fear death at all. I've lived most of my life in solitude, and I was genuinely happy that I wasn't alone in my final days.
I remembered my talks and time spent with Rias, how she always insisted I stopped throwing myself at the hint of danger and took care of myself. How Koneko's interactions were always quiet but filled with sweet moments involving candy. How Akeno's flirtatious jokes and seduction made me turn redder than my master's sacred gear. How Asia looked up to me as some kind of hero and worried about my well being. Kiba and I may not have interacted as much, but we respected each other in our own way. As for Issei, as perverted as he may be, he had a good heart underneath that weird exterior. I was grateful for them for keeping a piece of worthless trash like me around, even if it was just to be a shield. Still, I am going to miss those times between us.
I was walking through a crowd of booing people as storm clouds rained above us and thunder could be heard from time to time. The rain water wet my hair and made it heavier, causing it to cover my eyes while I kept on laughing the same laugh. I know I don't know my father or step-mother that well, but I respect how they tried their hardest to be good parents to me. Offering to help with my school work, making meals, helping me maintain the lighthouse, they were good people. I respected them not only as people, but as the parents I lacked before. Ariel was cold and harsh like a stormy sea, while Asger and Natalia were warm and soft, like a beach in summer.
I approached the town square, where there was an elevated stage made of wood, supposedly the spot where I'm to be executed. I walked up the wooden steps, still receiving boos and laughing slightly louder for the world to hear. Step after step, I could feel my heart racing, so this was fear of the end? I don't hate it. My fate is clear to me, I am destined to die my allies not would anyone close to me would have to suffer. I kicked onto my knees, with my arms now behind my back as I could hear guns begin getting loaded with rounds.
"So kid, any last words?" A deep and menacing voice asked as I could feel the cold barrel of a gun place itself against the black of my head.
I looked up from the ground to see what I think are everyone running towards the sight. Rias was leading the ground with tears in her eyes, Akeno looked on the brink of crying, Koneko actually looked scared for once, Kiba was trying his best to stop this execution, Asia was screaming to stop the execution, Issei has his sacred gear out, Natalia was yelling to stop the execution, and my father was dual wielding shotguns. I could see Ariel and her daughters look behind them to see the group of people with disgusted faces, with the exception being Nancy, who was confused.
"Don't hurt them, if you do, I will kill everyone on this island." I threatened as my laughter joined the roaring wind, the winds blowing strong today as a way to respect me?
The gunshots boomed.
(A/N: Well this was a depressing chapter, so what's everyone's favorite pizza topping?
