Chapter 1: The Masterless Shield

(Your POV)
"Man, I wanna squeeze some boobs."

"That is the worst way I can imagine starting off a conversation."

My name's (Y/N) (L/N), Ultimate Shield. If you don't know what I'm talking about, let's just say that I'm the best when it comes to being someone else's shield. For example, the ultimate pianist is the best pianist on the planet. However, my talent was incredibly useless right now because I have no one to protect, so I'm just wandering around, and now I'm hanging out with the school's most nefarious perverts. Not that I mind, they were fun to be around when they weren't being perverts, which is a solid 0.01% of the time.

I was dressed in the usual Kuoh Uniform, a white collared shirt, black pants, black steel toed boots cause I like em, and my parka wrapped around my waist in such a way that it makes it look like a waist cape. In case you don't know what a parka is, it's one of those long jackets that could reach your lower legs and have warm fur in them. My parka was black with (f/c) fur inside it to compliment my loose (f/c) tie.  My physique was taller than your average guy, being around 6"6' and rather muscular. I kind of need to stay in shape or I'd be pretty useless.

"I'm just saying that they'd feel nice around your hand once you give them a good squeeze." Issei justifies what he just said, somehow making me even more concerned.

(If you're new here; all my books depict Issei as a likable character and not the 'oppai emperor'.)

"Do you need a therapist or something?" I already had my cell phone out, ready to call someone, but Issei stopped me.

"Stop, If you're gonna call a therapist for anyone, it should be yourself." Issei demanded while his friend with glasses hushed us, which is understandable because he and baldie were trying to peek in on girls changing. "Seriously, don't you have interest in girls?"

"I do, but I don't peek in on them unless it's consensual." I informed my perverted friend, just something of a code of honor I've decided to adopt for no apparent reason. "I respect how you do things so long as they don't hurt others, now I must request that you respect mine."

"Sure thing man." Issei gave me a thumbs up before turning his attention to his two friends. "Hey guys, give me a peek!"

While Issei was too distracted about something, I just looked around for something to do when I saw something was stuck in a tree. I decided to let my friends deal with the consequences of their actions while I walked over to the tree in curiosity. I noticed a figure was stuck up there and quickly realized it was a cat. Strangely enough there was a dog at the base of the tree, barking at the cat from the ground. I reached into my bookbag and pulled out a bag of dried meat from a gator I accidently killed. I reached into the bag and pulled out a dried rectangle of meat before waving it under the dog's nose. The dog tried biting the meat but I pulled away and got the dog's attention. For lack of a better idea, I threw the meat away from the cat, towards a bench a couple were making out on. The meat landed right beside them, I would have apologized to them, but they were French kissing for five minutes.

I looked up the tree and saw the milk white cat looked surprised that I took the time out of my day to save it, and that I did it without harming the dog. I kind of expected the cat to come down when it felt like it, but the cat jumped onto my head with a grateful meow the moment I turned around. The cat was graceful enough for me not to notice until a small, white haired girl came running up to me and pointed out the cat on my head. I think I have a class with her, her name was Koneko was it?

"Thank you." Koneko thanked me in an emotionless voice, I'll take a wild guess and say that she doesn't express emotions often. "That dog was really annoying."

"Is this cat yours?" I asked, causing Koneko to nod her head, so I gently grabbed the cat and handed it to her. "Don't blame the dog, it was going with it's instincts, and is your cat hurt?"

"Doesn't look like it." Koneko examined the cat that was in her arms before her eyes slightly changed, allowing me to make the assumption she figured something out. "By the way, you're (Y/N), right?"

"I am, and don't we have floral class together?" I asked for confirmation, and Koneko confirmed my suspicions with a nod. "Good, just wanted to make sure you weren't someone else who looked just like you, which happens more often than I'd like to admit."

"It's fine, and I was rather surprised to see you in floral class." Koneko mentions, and I will admit, someone like me looks out of place in a class that's basically focused around flowers. "By the way, I noticed you working out in the park the other day, why is that?"

"I try to become the best shield I can be for my master." I explained, causing Koneko to tilt her head adorably.

"You have a master?" Koneko explained, and I realized my old fashioned samurai/knight way of thinking needs to be explained a bit. "I feel like that's something that should be reported..."

"That's not what I mean!" I tried explaining what I mean. "I'm in the talented course as the Ultimate Shield, and a shield without a master is useless. So by master, I mean someone I can protect with my life."

"I understand now, but aren't you enjoying your freedom without having a master?" Koneko asked, which was a question I get asked a lot in the talented course.

"There are perks of having no master, but I was always gifted with not only the skills to protect someone, but also the instinct." I gave the same answer I always did, surprising Koneko. "For the record, I am aware I act like an old fashioned samurai."

"I wasn't about to say that, but you do seem like a loyal person." Koneko examined, which I took as a compliment. "Say, (Y/N), how would you like to meet Rias Gremory?"

"Who?" I was genuinely confused by this, she speaks of this Rias girl like she's someone I'm supposed to know.

"You hang out with the most perverted people here and you have no idea who Rias is?" Koneko asked, causing me to bow apologetically.

"Forgive me, for I am not the smartest person around." I apologized before standing straight up. "I have heard her name thrown around but I have not met this Rias girl."

"She has big breasts." Koneko decided to help jog my memory by describing something that honestly doesn't help me in the slightest. "An overall nice figure, good grades, blue eyes, red hair..."

"Out of everything you have said the last two descriptions helped me the most, and I believe I have interacted with Rias before." I informed Koneko as she pet her cat. "She needed help with a history assignment, but that's the only time I've spoken with her. I wouldn't be surprised if she had no idea who I am."

"We'll see about that." Koneko turned around and gestured for me to follow her. "You're not in a club are you?"

"No, why?" I asked as I started walking at Koneko's side, kind of like a bodyguard.

"I was going to invite you to join ORC with me, if that's alright."

"Okay."

(Timeskip, brought to you by a shield falling in front of the screen with a heavy thud, but chibi (Y/N) picked it up and took it away)

So apparently, Rias did know who I was.

Hooray.

That leads to Koneko and I sitting in an old Victorian chair across from Rias, who was sitting calmly in front of us in a similar looking chair. I was sitting there awkwardly while Koneko's cat laid on my lap and my eyes adjusted to the unnecessarily dark room. We weren't alone however, Akeno Himejima was making tea and Yuuto Kiba was cleaning up a vase I may or may not have accidently knocked over while still adjusting to the darkness of the room. I felt bad for breaking the vase, and I just wanted to run away in embarrassment but Rias insisted I stay here for tea, so I was forced to stay out of politeness.

"Why is it so dark in here?" I asked out of nowhere, which I wasn't wrong, the room's walls were painted a dark gray and the only source of light was coming from thin, Victorian era windows.

"This building is rather old, so the lighting needs some updating, but we can just use lights from a window." Rias informed me, and since I had nothing better to do, I offered to put in new lights.

"If you'd like, I can install new lights." I offered, I also knew some electrical stuff and I want to be helpful, even if I have no idea what kind of person I'm dealing with. "Plus I must repay you for breaking a vase."

"I told you it's fine (Y/N), but if it will help put your mind at ease, then you can install lights." Rias sweatdropped at my insistence on making up for breaking the vase. "Back to the original subject, what brings you here, (Y/N)?"

"Koneko recommended I join ORC, and I have nothing better to do, since my only friends are usually too busy peeking in on girls to hang out, I figured I can help out around here." I announced, and I could see I caught everyone off guard.

"Koneko, is this true?" Rias asked the white haired girl, who nodded in response. "I suppose now is the point where we tell (Y/N) our secret, Akeno?"

"Of course." Akeno stopped pouring tea for us and the window drapes suddenly closed on their own.

Neat.

Black wings emerged from Rias' back, followed by Akeno, Koneko, and Kiba summoning the same kind of black wings. To be honest, this didn't phase me in the slightest. Not to say I wasn't surprised, I just didn't show it. Plus if I die, that's great! Kiba and Akeno stopped what they were doing to stand by Rias' side, and Koneko looks like she felt slightly bad for something.

"So you all are..." I took a moment to take in the aesthetic of the room, the wings, Rias' name, and the magic circle in the corner of the room. "...devils?"

"Correct, we are all devils, you're quite observant (Y/N)." Rias complimented, not like I deserved it. "Everyone in ORC is a piece of my peerage, and I am the king piece. Akeno is the Queen piece, Koneko is the room piece, and Kiba is the Knight piece."

"So becoming a devil turns you into a chess piece of some kind?" I was confused, I don't know much about devils because I didn't believe in them, until now.

"Not exactly, but you're not too far off." Kiba corrected me, and I was curious about what else I could be missing. "You see, after the Great War, devils made these things called evil pieces that allow high-ranking devils to recruit just about anyone using chess pieces, turning them into devils in the process."

"Interesting, but I have a question; what does any of this have to do with me?" I asked, all this sounded fascinating, but I'm not really sure how this all connects to me.

"Koneko said she would like for you to join ORC, which is another way of saying you think you'd be a good fit for my peerage." Rias explained as she began putting her wings away. "I'd like to know a bit more about you (Y/N), so before I decide to add you to my peerage, tell me about yourself."

"Very well then." I began explaining my talent. "I am the Ultimate Shield, meaning I have much more health, endurance, and defense than the average person. I'm still human, so while I can take countless hits and get back up, I need time to recover between them. I don't have a healing factor or anything special to help make this talent easier."

"As amazing as that is, I'm not interested in your talent." Rias informed me, which was rather odd. "I want to know about you, (Y/N)."

"O-Okay." I cleared my throat, careful not to mention my mother. "I have no other notable trait other than being easy to throw away, so I try to make it so I can defend more important people than myself. My father is the captain of a cargo ship, and is away making deliveries to different countries. Due to him not possessing a phone, my only form of communication with him is the postcards he sends on holidays."

"What about your mother?" Koneko asked, and I had to repeat a lie that I've told many other people.

"When I was seven, my mother disappeared without a trace." I knew lying to these people was a bad idea, but this is a family secret, so it's personal. "The cops already found her dead along the ragged rocks of the sea a long time ago."

"I'm sorry for intruding on such a personal matter." Rias apologized, and I felt kind of bad lying like that, and I didn't want to keep any secrets, yet there are some things better left unknown about me.

"It's fine, people always wonder who my mother is because she was a very mysterious woman." I decided to change the subject. "As for my friends, that goes to Issei, Matsuhada, Motohama, and Nancy the seal."

"You're friends with a seal?" Akeno asked, which is random I'll admit, but I live right next to the coast, it's not that hard.

"Could be weirder, but Issei being your friend does make things easier." Rias went on, does she like Issei or something? I can always act as a wingman. "You see, Issei is currently being targeted by fallen angels because he appears to possess a powerful sacred gear."

"Do you like him?" I asked, and Rias did her best to hide her shock, slight insult, and anger.

"Nope." Rias said without missing a beat, and judging her from reaction, she actually hated his guts. "I only want to add him to my peerage because of his powerful sacred gear, and potentially preventing blood from being spilled."

"Understood, I shall protect him with my life." I said with a determined glint, I will not let my best friend die!

"Be patient, I still have to recruit you first." Rias held out her hand, causing Akeno to drop a crimson colored rook piece in Rias' hand before the crimson haired girl stood up and walked towards me. "Now (Y/N), once you accept, there will be no going back."

"It's better than living a life without a purpose." I accepted the piece, causing the rook piece to glow a bright crimson and float into my chest, and I suddenly felt a lot stronger than I did earlier.

"Congratulations, you're officially in my peerage." Rias congratulated me, and I stood up, finally happy that I have someone to live for and protect with me. "You're free to go home now, feel free to get some rest."

"Understood, Lady Rias." I bowed like a butler before walking off.

Finally, I belong somewhere.

(POV change, author POV)

Some time after you left, Kiba went off to go help the student council and Koneko went to keep an eye on Issei. Rias and Akeno were currently playing a game of chess against one another, and Rias was focused on not only keeping alive, but also her rook as well. Akeno noticed this and smiled to herself, thinking she knew full well what is going through the girl's head.

"I take it you like (Y/N)?" Akeno asked as she moved a pawn piece to put it within the enemy bishop piece's range. "Not like I blame you, he is rather charming once you get to know him."

"It's not just that, it's that I noticed something about him." Rias moved her knight piece to take out Akeno's bishop. "He seems too eager to help not only us, but just about everyone."

"You've been keeping an eye on him for a while now, so his personality shouldn't be that surprising." Akeno reminds, and for a bit of context, Rias thought she sensed a slight magical energy coming from you, but she found nothing when she looked into you.

"Yet there's one thing that's been bugging me, why does he want a 'master'?" Rias asked herself out loud, most likely not realizing I based your entire personality off of the loyal samurai stereotype.

"Now that you mention it, he does remind me of a wolf without a pack." Akeno moved her room piece in order to let Rias' queen piece take it. "Perhaps a werewolf would be more accurate."

"Maybe it's because he's desperate for a place to belong." Rias manages to piece together, not at all what I was going for but I guess it works.

"Didn't he say he had friends, the perverted trio to be exact?" Akeno made a valid point, I'm very curious as to what's going through Rias' mind.

"He did, but half the time Matsuda and Motohama don't care that he's there." Rias explained, which is surprisingly observant for the first chapter. "Usually they just keep him around to take the blame, and the only exception to that was Issei surprisingly."

"Well I'm glad (Y/N) has a friend." Akeno calmly smiled but noticed that Rias seemed slightly angry.

"Hey just deserves so much more, he's so kind, loyal, and tries his best at everything he does..." Rias announced, and Akeno realized she had some competition.

"You like him, don't you?"

"Maybe."

While all of this was happening, you were thinking about potatoes.

(A/N: Sorry about ditching my old DXD book, but I felt as though the main character was too OP and had confusing powers. Plus I felt like calling people out made me lose viewers, so like I did with my RWBY and DAL books, I'm making an interesting MC with a unique backstory that doesn't revolve around abused/neglected BS. One other thing, I know some of you guys are gonna call this MC a simp, but is he really a simp if he's that nice to everyone? The answer is no. If you are nice to everyone, you are just a fundamentally good person and people are lucky to have you.
