Chapter 15

Watching in amazement as clusters of ladybugs race out of the room, he barely notices Ladybug struggling to hold her balance on the way to the window.

Filled with concern, he calls over, "What are you doing? You're hurt."

Stopping at the window, supporting her weight on the wall beside it, she answers, "I need to get home. My parents will be wondering where I am."

"Oh no you're not!" he says, striding over to her, "You are staying here to rest so that I can make sure that you don't collapse. How are you going to explain this to your parents? I don't think that they'd understand." And with that he leads her over to the bed again, forcing her to sit down.

"Thank you for your concern, but it doesn't even hurt that much anymore." she says, panting slightly.

"Yeah, sure." he says, looking down at her and watching her carefully, "Look, I'll let you go on your way when I'm sure that you can take care of yourself. Until then, listen to your bug-creature and rest."

Giving up resisting, she sighs before moving back against the pillows. Spider-Man takes a chair over and sets it beside her before sitting down. A moment of silence occurs before Spider-Man says, "You should probably phone your parents; let them know you're okay. Here."

Ladybug takes the phone from Spider-Man's hand, before punching in the number and saying, "You keep your phone in your suit?" and bringing it to her ear.

"Where else am I meant to put it?" he replies.

The phone rings a few times before her parents pick up. She tells them that she left to hang out with a friend and that she'll be home later. After hanging up, she gives the phone back to Spider-Man.

Taking the phone back, he asks her, "So what was that thing; the flying bug thing."

Ladybug gives a slight laugh before replying, "Tikki is my kwami. She gives me the power to become Ladybug. The only people that are meant to know of their existence are other kwamis and miraculous holders." she then continues more seriously, looking straight at him, " You can't tell anybody - I mean it - you're not suppose to know."

Spider-Man considers her for a moment, before looking her in the eyes and saying, "Don't worry, I won't."

They remain the same for a few moments, listening to the steady pass of cars outside.

"The akuma - NightMary - what exactly was her power?" Spider-Man asks, turning to look at the wall.

Ladybug thinks over this before replying, "She used knowledge from us: our past, our fears, things we love. She exaggerated them; manipulated our emotions in order to make us as scared as she was." She opens her mouth to say something, but decides against it and looks away.

"What were you going to say?" Spider-Man asks, turning to face her after having seen her out of the corner of his eye.

Pausing for a moment, she replies, "My dream was different... I was faced with the truth. Someone said something to me - about me - and I didn't want to admit that they were right because I was afraid to think differently."

Spider-Man thinks about this, he answers, "And now?"

She sighs, "And now I'm confused... but I'll figure it out. Eventually. What was your dream?"

To her surprise Spider-Man laughs, "Well, while you faced the truth, I got to meet a villian that turned me into Spider-Ham."

"Spider-Ham?" she questions, with a puzzled expression on her face.

"A pig." the seriousness of which he says this causes them both to burst out laughing as soon as they lock eyes.

"It could have been worse." Ladybug says, having calmed down. Spider-Man hums for her to continue. "You could have spent the rest of the dream dancing."

He pictures Spider-Ham spending the rest of the dream dancing and bursts out laughing all over again, "True!"

They are quiet for a while before Spider-Man asks, "Does it still hurt?"

"Not as much. Tikki's right; I just need to rest."

Even though school has been cancelled, Adrien can't seem to catch a break. After saving Paris once again he was greeted by Natalie telling him that he had to skip breakfast in order to make it to his photo-shoot.

Ah, yes, because whenever Paris has been tormented by a supervillain and saved by superheroes your top priority should be to dress up and take pictures.

And due to his focus on whether or not Ladybug's okay, he was constantly in trouble for not following the photographer's instructions. At one point he thought that the photographer was going to explode from frustration before they finally finished with the pictures.

He could hear Plagg sniggering the whole way home and kept getting odd glances from Natalie.

And once he returned home he was then given a lecture by his father about the importance of remaining professional. After that had finished he was then sent to his room.

So now he is laying on his bed; listening to the sound of Plagg munching on his camembert and wondering how Ladybug is.

It was worrying enough to have two villains to fight, but for one of them to actually be able to hurt her was scary. Their suits are meant to keep them from getting hurt or feeling pain whilst wearing them, so had they stopped working properly? Or was Loki more powerful than the miraculous? He had tried to ask Plagg about this, but the conversation had went nowhere.

"Plagg, how was Loki able to hurt Ladybug?" Adrien had worriedly asked.

"I don't know." was the simple reply.

"Was he even an akuma?" Adrien tried.

"I don't know." he was answered again.

"Do you ever know anything?" he had snapped.

Plagg had then looked at him before replying, "Ask Ladybug."

So while he now sits on his bed he replays what had happened. Before vanishing into thin air, Loki had hit Ladybug with a blue light. Chat had watched her rise into the air and begin to plummet to the ground, while he was trapped behind the damage from his fight with Loki. Before his horror could reach its ultimate peak something miraculous happened. Spider-Man swooped in and caught Ladybug. Chat had scrambled over and looked at her, her face scrunched up in pain and her body unmoving.

Spider-Man had tried to reassure him that she would be okay - and Chat believed him. He trusted him to take Ladybug and make sure that she used the miraculous cure. It seems to have been the right move; earlier he had watched as a swarm of ladybugs scoured the city and repaired the damage from this morning.

He would hopefully get to speak to them both later. If Ladybug is alright and can patrol and if Spider-Man decides to tag along. He has a thank you to give and questions that need to be answered.

-

After making sure that Ladybug was alright, Spider-Man has finally let her leave. She has said that she should be able to patrol tonight.

She is no longer finding it difficult to get her body to move or finding it painful. She can now breath without it sounding like wheezing, and speak without it sounding strained.

She had unknowingly provided him with a lot of information to retell to the all the avengers in thier 'mission'. They had not been able to see him during his time with Ladybug as the events had not gone to plan. There was not meant to have been an akuma. Loki was to pretend to be one and trap Ladybug, so that Spider-Man could prevent him from getting her miraculous.

So whenever she fell, Spider-Man arriving in time to catch her was only a stroke of luck.

He had been so worried after he caught her; he had thought that she was dead. If his spidey sense hadn't gone off as he swung around the corner of the building then she might be.

To see the girl that saves Paris, fights for people and cares for him - as he cares for her - despite knowing him for such a short time, in such a state of pain had been terrifying. He hadn't wanted her to get hurt - they said that their suits protected them! - but everything had worked to their advantage.

Spider-Man still hasn't been told all of the plan with Ladybug and Chat Noir. His mission is to just do as he's told.

He had wondered why they didn't just follow the duo, watch them detransform. Apparently, every time that an agent began to follow them, they were conveniently interrupted. Whether it be a random bill-board, cluster of people, or a mysterious football to the face, something has always prevented them from figure it out.

And he couldn't look at Ladybug when she, well, when she wasn't Ladybug. That would be betraying her trust; the exact opposite to what he is suppose to do! Although, he is curious. Ladybug infatuates him. Whoever is behind the mask must be as amazing as she is.

But, with his newfound emotions has now brought him some guilt. Of all his new information, what Ladybug has confided in him seems almost private, but even so he is still going to update SHIELD with it all. That is his job.

So now he is to leave. Once he gets back to the SHIELD helicarrier he is to inform them of their development in the plan and receive instructions on how to proceed.

Spider-Man walks over to the window and, feeling as if forgetting something, takes out his phone.

He switches it on and goes onto the phone log. As he looks at the last number dialled he realises something. Ladybug used his phone to call her parents. He could call the number and he would be able to speak to her parents...

He's going to know who Ladybug is.

-

"Spider-Man! You have spent three hours talking with Ladybug. What have you found out?" Nick loudly questions.

"The are each powered by a kwami; a creature with miraculous powers. Each kwami is to be 'recharged' with food; Ladybug's prefers chocolate chip cookies. They do not know each other's identities. Ladybug is fourteen, almost fifteen, and Chat Noir is fifteen. Their suits protect them from all harm, although Loki was able to hurt her. Tikki (her kwami)said that it may be because he is more powerful than the Miraculous. Hawkmoth's identity is unknown to them; so far they have made no progress on revealing him. Everything else was just us talking." Spider-Man recites, feeling a pit in his stomach.

"Very good," Steve comments, "Now let's move on to the next-"

"Wait!" Spider-Man interrupts, fighting the urge to look down but unable to contain the excitement in his voice, "Ladybug used my phone to call her parents. I still have their number."

They were obviously not expecting this, as evident in their expressions of surprise.

"Let's give the young girl's parents a call!" Tony says with a grin.

Spider-Man takes his phone out from his pocket. He goes to the phone log and dials the most recent number, before hitting 'call' and setting it on the table.

The suspension in the room is high, as one of the superheroes identities is about to be revealed to them. They all seem to watch it hungrily in wait for the answer.

Finally, a cheery voice picks up, "Tom and Sabine Boulangerie Patisserie! This is Sabine Chengk, how may I help you today?"

After a minor temporary shock, Spider-Man hurriedly replies, "Uh, yeah, hi Sabine. I was just calling Marinette's number; I guess she accidentally gave me the wrong number. So, bye!"

And with that he ends the call.

'Oh my God. I can't believe it.

Marinette is Ladybug.'

-

"Someone was trying to call you, Marinette - Peter, I think - you must have given him the wrong number." says Sabine as she returns to her seat at the dinner table.

Marinette looks up from her conversation with Alya, "Thanks, Mama. I'll talk to him tomorrow."

"Oh, girl. This just further proves my point; you can't think straight around him!" Alya laughs, causing Marinette to turn bright red and stutter in a rush to protest.

Choosing to ignore Alya's comment, Marinette begins to clear up the plates. Alya joins in before having to leave. Adding a, "See you later!" before returning home.

After bidding goodnight to her parents, Marinette climbs the stairs to her room. Once she is there she flops down on to her bed, Tikki flying to lay beside her.

A few moments later, Marinette sits up and curiously asks, "Tikki," to which she gets a hum, " why didn't I have a nightmare?"

Tikki contemplates this before answering, "The Miraculous works in weird ways. Perhaps, being Lady luck, you escaped the nightmare - but, you still had to see something that scares you."

"So you mean I was right and-" she begins cautiously, before being interrupted by Tikki.

"You're scared of what Alya said; the truth. You've been head over heels for Adrien for so long that, even experiencing a fraction of those feelings for someone else is frightening to you. " Tikki finishes.

They sit in silence for a moment. Thinking. Before Marinette says, "But how can I feel this way for four different people? What am I meant to do?"

"Oh, Marinette." Tikki sighs, sympathetically, "Everything will be fine. Just do what you always do - although perhaps with less stuttering. Time for patrol."

With a slight giggle, Marinette calls out, "Tikki, spots on!"

And in a swirl of pink and red, Marinette is now replaced with Ladybug. She then makes her way out of the room and to patrol.

-

The superhero duo both arrive on the roof of the old sweet shop. Before Ladybug can get a word out, she finds herself engulfed in a hug.

With Chat Noir's arms wrapped around her she hears him say, "I... I thought something bad... I... I'm so happy you're okay... Are you okay?"

He pulls back from the hug to look her up and down, searching for any signs of pain or injury.

"I'm fine, Chat." Ladybug assures him, "Spider-Man helped me. C'mon, it's time to patrol."

And with a final check to make sure that she is okay, Chat Noir agrees and they both head out on patrol.

Seeing that it is a luckily quiet night, both of the superheroes return to their meeting place. As they arrive they notice a lone, red and blue figure, leaning casually on the chimney. Spider-Man.

"A quiet night?" Spiderman asks as they arrive in front of them.

"You could say that." Ladybug shrugs, giving him a smile.

After a short (and puzzling) moment of Spider-Man staring at Ladybug, Chat Noir decides to end it, "So, uh, why don't we all sit. Probably be a lot more comfortable."

Agreeing, the trio all sit down.

After another slightly uncomfortable silence, Chat Noir says, "Thank you, Spider-Man, for saving Ladybug. I... I don't know what would have happened if you weren't there."

Spider-Man has finally looked at him and replies, "It's no problem; I'm just glad that I got there in time."

Both Spider-Man and Ladybug watch Chat as he considers what he says next.

Eventually, Chat looks up and sincerely says, "I'm sorry about how I treated you - when we met and after that... it was wrong of me to judge you. I thought that maybe... maybe you were using us for information or something, but... I was also jealous."

"Jealous?" Spider-Man repeats, perplexed, "Why would you be jealous?"

Chat sighs before looking down, "I, uh, thought that - when Ladybug defended you - that she liked you. More than a friend. And I'm sorry if I made you feel bad."

'Wait, he thought Spider-Man likes me?' Ladybug thinks.

And Ladybug can't believe it. Staring at him in something akin to shock, she smiles at him. Happy that they might finally get along.

After a short silence, Chat feels a hand on his shoulder, "It's okay. Honestly, if I had have been in your position then I probably would have behaved the same way."

As happy as it makes Spider-Man to know that he's made progress with Chat Noir, he can't help but feel guilty. He is using them. And now he has some ultimate information: Ladybug's true identity.

And as happy as this makes him; knowing who this amazing person really is and progressing in his mission. He can't help but feel guilty... he's betrayed her, and he knows it.

Chat's attention is quickly turned to Ladybug, as if remembering her again, once more completely concerned, "And you're sure you're okay? Because I know a really good doctor-"

"I'm fine, Chat." Ladybug giggles, "Although, now is probably a good time to figure out the two 'akumas'."

"Well," Chat Noir begins, with Spider-Man's attention once more on Ladybug, "Maybe Hawkmoth can transform two people at a time? Or one was controlling the other?"

"No, that doesn't make sense. Loki's power wasn't the same as an akuma; that's why he was able to hurt me - he's a different power to the ordinary or the Miraculous." Ladybug recites.

And it is now that Spider-Man decides to come clean... ish.

"I know the second villain, Loki. He... uh... must have followed me here. I'm sorry, it won't happen again." He says, head low in mock guilt.

It is now Ladybug's turn to put her hand on his shoulder, startling Spider-Man from his staring contest with the roof. "It's okay," she says, "You didn't mean for him to come her. It's not your fault."

"And besides," Chat says, drawing all attention to him, "if you hadn't have come here, then you never would have met anyone as pawsitively clawsome as me and LB."

After a moment of giggles and a dramatic sigh from Ladybug, it is decided that for once they will leave on time. Spider-Man leaves first, allowing the duo to be alone again.

When they pass another moment of Chat making sure that Ladybug is okay, she decides to bring up the apology.

"It's not a big deal, m'lady. I was wrong." Chat shrugs, before rushing to add, "Him being here is still suspicious, I just shouldn't have reacted that way."

Ladybug considers him for a moment before turning away. Her subtle fidgeting clues to whatever's playing on her mind.

"Do you think Spider-Man's okay? I mean, he was acting really weird."

"I think everything he does is weird." Chat smirks, "Look, he's probably just worried about you - I am. There's nothing to panic over."

Ladybug turns to him, checking his eyes for sincerity. She eventually sighs and relaxes.

"I better head home. Get some more rest. Goodnight." she says, before swinging from the roof.

"Goodnight!" Chat calls after her, before heading in the opposite direction.

-

Spontaneously deciding that he would visit Marinette, Spider-Man finds himself atop of her balcony. He has previously seen Ladybug enter her room, and has intentionally waited five minutes as to not arise suspicion. Although, now that he's here and thinking about it, a superhero randomly turning up at your house is probably pretty weird.

He was going to SHIELD headquarters, but found himself turned in the opposite direction. What did SHIELD want with her? From what he can tell, she's amazing, fantastic, simply... miraculous.

So now he needs to talk to her. He'd contemplated what to do during their rooftop meeting earlier - or rather, tried to. He just can't help the guilty feeling of betrayal.

After knocking on her window and waiting, she opens it, already in pyjamas.

She first stares at him in panic - probably assuming he's found her out (not that she'd be wrong) - before her eyes show confusion, and she questions, "Who are you?"
