Season 9 review - THE HYPE IS HERE!!
As the title suggests, Season 9 is certainly going to be one to remember. Already within the first five minutes I knew this would blow season 8's first few mediocre episodes out of the water (bar the finale) and I was right. You've read my expectations about it, now let's see how the first episodes matches up. It's time, SEASON 9 REVIEW STARTS NOW!!!
And just in case....
MASSIVE SPOILER ALERT!
IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN SEASON 8 FINALE OR THE FIRST EPISODE OF SEASON 9, DON'T READ THIS REVIEW. Vote if you want but I really don't like spoiling episodes for people, especially one's as great as the season 8 finale and the start of season 9. If you haven't seen them you know what to do.
Now then, let's begin.
Episode 1 - The Magician's Apprentice
Pretty much all of my expectations came true in one episode and I'm so happy they created such a good episode to start this season off with a bang. This episodes opening scene has to be one of the best I've seen since David. You really want the really cute little boy to be saved from the strange creepy hand mines who pull people under the earth like those really creepy zombies who are raised from the dead and start to pull you under. Adding the eyes to them and making them the same colour as the mud for camouflage was genius too, the call back with the eyes to the episode with the Fires of Pompey and Donna with the Sisterhood of Kahn (I think) with those women in red robes with the eyes on their hands I loved because I got a call back to one of the not well known aliens. When they reinforced the Sisterhood even more I was so happy.
And then came the big one.
The big reveal.
The cute wee boy who you wanted the Doctor to save.
Was Davros.

Honestly one of the best reveals in a long while. As soon as that was revealed and Capaldi's priceless reaction was on screen I knew it kicked Season 8's ass! Seriously, you've seen my rants about it, you know it's true.
After that my list was getting completed for me, the Sisterhood was brought back, a hint at the Shadow Proclamation reminded me of David's days when he faced the Judoon, a new villain called Colony Sarth (dubbed by fans as 'meat stack') came into the picture, he was scary even though he looked liked he'd been run over with a lawnmower (or combine harvester if you prefer) but his reveal was almost as big as Davros'! The Doctor's reaction summed it up perfectly, 'Snakes in a dress!'
Clara was actually pretty badass for once in that leather jacket and that motorbike, so much so that I almost considered cosplaying as her for a minute. But just a minute.
Introducing UNIT was OK but once again the nerds on computers got showed up by her 'smarts' which annoyed me a little but then came Missy's entrance. I loved it, enough said. The meeting was great and summing up her relationship with the Doctor, proving she was still evil as ever by incinerating more people while mimicking the current Doctor 's Scottish accent, even providing Clara some 'shade' with her remote controlling planes was great.
Then, in came the randomness. How CAN'T you enjoy the Doctor playing the electric guitar, ON A BLOODY TANK! That Viking looking guy was so stunned his reaction was hilarious(shame he was a Darlek, that was annoying, especially when I can't understand why the Doctor didn't leave it somewhere safer), and the corny jokes actually suited the mood, especially the 'axe fight' pun. And the Pretty Woman intro! I also got to see one of the gadgets I mentioned, the vortex manipulator! Good old Missy, she knows how to cause chaos. I also loved the 'hug homage' to the previous series, the first episode of season 8 Capaldi said he didn't do hugs so I found that funny, ironic and kind of sweet that he hugged her first.
Then came 'the Doctor's greatest enemy' (which Missy was naturally offended by) and the big reveal of Skaro and the first Darlek colours, the light blue Darlek I found awesome looking and Davros looking as ill as Colony Sarth said he looked (brilliant acting as always), the sonic screwdriver was a nice touch, along with the fourth doctor quote memento which also nicely explained the Asylum of the Darleks in a nutshell and seeing the 4th again too was great. Oh! And the quote in the arena about Capaldi wearing different memorable other Doctor items was brilliant too, wearing the long scarf and stuff.
I even got the death of Clara too and the reveal of her leaving soon (from another source) but even though both Missy and Clara were 'exterminated' it was done so obviously that you knew they'd come back somehow, it's like starting the new series with the death of the doctor again, (they did it once in Matt Smith's series and it was good but predictable too) obviously the Doctor isn't going to die within the first episode. But, he could 'die inside' per say if both his closest friends die by the hand of Davros, THAT would be interesting but it's unlikely considering Missy has came back many times before and Clara is the Impossible Girl so she's technically always in the Doctor's timeline, apparently. I still don't get that plotline, they didn't explain it well enough in my opinion.
Anyways, in a nutshell the episode was an amazing start of a two partner and I just hope the second part is just as good and continues on with a brilliant start to the 9th series.
So, I really enjoyed it, what did you guys think? Do you think the second part will be as good as the first or will it ruin such a good start to the series? Do you think they'll ever reveal the story behind Gallifrey or are they going to keep us on edge for another series?
Who knows, but I'll be reviewing it along the way, good or bad, disappointing or not so I'll see ya next week! :-)
Cap'n
