Season 9 Continued -Tons of Two Parters

Seems Moffat's in the mood for two parters this season. Will they work? Let's find out!

Episode 3 - Under the Lake

This was quite an interesting episode, like a lot of the previous monsters it relied on the shock factor to scare the audience and I really think it delivered. It wasn't overly scary like the Waters of Mars or Weeping Angel episodes but it was enough to keep you interested unlike that Season 8 rubbish. I felt these new 'monsters' or 'ghosts' as they are now known as reminded me of a mix of the Vashta Narata (as guessed previously) and the Waters of Mars zombie/monster look. Surprisingly, it was not as scary for me, you all know how much I HATED those episodes.

So, I'm gonna start step by step. First off, the spaceship looked really interesting, and well done not just a bunch of glowy lights showing the inside. Then we get the cliche 'greedy only in it for money guy' who we all hate, the military guy who dies in such a spectacular way which I loved but it was a shame the full death wasn't shown but the ghost appearance was enough to keep me satisfied. Seriously? Death by incineration AND saving someone's life? Can't go any other way.

The ghosts NOT killing anyone until after the spaceship reveal was interesting and I loved the hand fazing through the wall bits and the muted speaking. I noticed they were saying something quite early on so I was a little annoyed when they took so long to reveal it but it can't be helped. Cass is badass and I like the guy who signs for her. Especially when the Doctor said he could sign before realising he 'deleted' it. That was funny, you can't do everything Doctor! :)

The night and day settings stuff was quite interesting, still haven't figured that out yet. The action sequences were quite good but I felt they spent a lot of the time trying to figure things out and not a lot of character development was made on Cass or anyone else which was disappointing, I don't even know all there names, I only know them as 'Science guy' and 'Sign guy' and 'O Donoghue' the Fangirl and Cass of course, that's it. The stereotypical greedy dickass who wanted the oil or whatever was annoying but his death was interesting even though it was predictable quite early on, since he was such an ass. I also liked the hidden joke during the 'bait scene' where Clara said something like,

'I'm alive too, in case anyone cared.'

No Clara! I didn't! Why don't you die already?!

I don't like her...in case you didn't notice.

Anyways, all in all it was quite a good setup for another two parter...apart from one thing.

The cliffhanger.

Now, for those of you who know me well, I like writing cliffhangers. What I don't like...is predictable ones.

Come on! For once, can't we leave this 'Doctor has to die plotline ALONE!' No? Well do it properly instead of making him a ghost signal thing?! It's stupid! Maybe all the crew becomes ghosts or something but not him! It's a rubbish way to go!

Every new regeneration they do this plotline at least ONCE! Think about it. David finished with it, Matt has two seasons of it and now Peter gets it too, wth?

Ach, never mind. I just hope they don't screw it up.

(They will.)

Episode 4 - Before the Flood

As expected, this second partner was...OK, I guess. The Doctor meeting the annoying rat fellow was interesting, yet annoying. I think the spaceship was for some kind of funeral thing which turned out that the alien dude known as the Fisher King, wasn't dead after all or did the ghosts send out as signal so he could be resurrected or something? I don't even know. But the Fisher King looked kind of cool and the Doctor's speech was badass as always. Although FK kinda looked liked a side open mouthed Ood. The time stream replay bit reminded me A LOT of the third Harry Potter movie and the way the Doctor dismissed O' Donoghue's death was surprising but I found the 'angst' between Penn and the Doctor was a bit cliche. And the Doctor's ghost was a hologram?! Seriously, that annoyed me a lot,

'I have to die.'

OH! WHOOPS! NOT TODAY!

GAH! Stop it with the death stuff! We all know he ain't gonna die so STOP SAYING HE IS! It's too damn predictable!

The romance between Cass and the sign guy at the end was cute but predictable but I did like the UNIT reference. All in all, it was an OK finish to an OK two parter. The next episode looks interesting though, Vikings vs Aliens! :-)  See ya then! :D
