The Empty Hearse review
I know these updates are like 9 months overdue but i still want to complete the book so i decided to write reviews. It sounds pointless but i didn't want to give spoilers because it ruins the episode if you know what happens! "So why did you write a book called Sherlock S3 Spoilers then?" Because i can and it's a free country :) Here's my review....
The doors of 221B finally re opened to the public as the first episode of the 3rd series aired. The premier, The Empty Hearse, Was watched by 9.7 MILLION people in the UK alone! The anticipated return of Holmes and Watson was well worth the wait!
Due to Steven Moffat's commitment with the loved show, Doctor Who, it kept pushing the filming of series 3 further back, much to the dismay of the fans. Eventually filming began and #Sherlocklives was trending worldwide on Twitter.
The first episode of the 3 part series really tied up most of the loose ends from the Reinbach Fall. In my opinion, i think it was the perfect episode to really ease us back into the swing of things. At the beginning of the episode we find out that Sherlock has been travelling around the world for 2 years dismantaling Moriarty's crime syndicate, but he can finally return back to London, get to know it again...
His dear brother Mycroft (Played by co creator Mark Gatiss) pulled him out of a sticky situation in Russia, however Sherlock returned severly battered and bruised. Timing is impeccable as ever, brother dear. Time to meet up with Watson, however Mr.Holmes is too naive for his own good.
John, has moved on with his life. He is now accompinied with the soon to be Wife, Mary, and of course the awful moustache. The perfect couple so it seems, and as the perfect moment is around the corner a french waiter who looks extremely like Sherlock decides to spoil the moment.
Deciding to come back with "Does yours rub off too?" probably wasn't the best idea, after supposedly being dead for two years. And of course John didn't take this very well. Not very well at all. Now Sherlock has found himself on the floor, so much for the grand entrance. We are then taken to a cafe, with a very angry looking John. "Don't you miss it? The thrill of the chase, the blood pumping through your veins, just the two of us against the world." has been the outstanding phrase in the 'Original British Drama' advert on BBC (which sent fans crazy) and it does perfectly sum up the first 2 series but the 3rd series is different. John is now engaged, Sherlock fears that it will never be quite the same.
So John may have not taken it so well, what about Mrs.Hudson. Well if screaming with a saucepan is a good sign then she took it very well!
In bedded in the episode were different theories in how Sherlock survived the fall, but the real reason is still a mystery to us all. Or maybe it isn't? Would Sherlock be a man to reveal his death defying act to all of us? One theory that caught my eye, and many others, was the last theory in the episdoe. Sherlock looks at his phone and he recieves a text saying
LAZARUS IS A GO
Many fans saw this as a link to the Doctor Who episode "The Lazarus Experiment." which is written by Mark Gatiss.
The man Lazarus is from the New Testament from the Bible and was actually revived back to life by Jesus, a bit like how Sherlock was 'Revived'.
On the very final shot of the episode we see a face watching the clips of John in the bonfire. Who was he and why was he so interested in John and Sherlock?
