Chap-1 A wild,excited young man
'Life in London is not it was,' said Sherlock Holmes to Dr Watson.They were sitting at the breakfast table in their Baker Street rooms one morning in the summer of 1894. Holmes was smoking cigarette and Watson was reading newspaper.
' True, Holmes,' said the doctor.For most of the people life is much better now.
' But for me Watson, life is not interesting,' he explained Holmes.I loved to read newspaper,hoping to find some interesting crime or a dangerous criminal for him to catch.Where are those criminals these days?He smiled sadly.
'Sometimes I don't understand you,Holmes,' said Watson."I like living a quiet life myself".
Holmes did not reply and he opened his newspaper in a lazy way and started to read.Suddenly they heard a knock at the street downstairs.They heard it again. Mrs Hudson,housekeeper ran to open the door and a wild, excited young man fell into the ball.He immediately ran up the stairs.
'Who are you Sir? asked Watson 'And what do you want?'The young man looked at Holmes and started to explain.
'I am sorry,Mr Holmes' said the man. 'Please don't feel angry. I feel so afraid'.
Holmes told him to sit in the room and began to talk.
'Have a cigarette,' he said ' and tell us who are you'.
The man took the cigarette and Watson lit it for him.
'My name's John McFarlane.' Neither Holmes and Watson knew his name.
'And I am in a terrible trouble.You must help me.The police want to arrested me but I've done nothing.
'Very interesting' Holmes said.But what have you done that the police want you to arrest?
'Nothing,I told you. But they are thinking that I have murdered a man called Jonas Oldacre , a builder who lived in south London,at Norwood.
McFarlane saw the newspaper and opened it.'It's here, Wait let me read out.'
'Terrible crime at Norwood.Murder of a well-known builder.
' I'm sure they will arrest me.This news will kill my poor mother.
McFarlane was a good-looking young man with bright eyes and long hair.He was 27 years old and Watson would see that he came from a good family.
Watson read the newspaper and Sherlock Holmes listened carefully.
MURDERED OF A WELL-KNOWN BUILDER.
Last late night a crime took place of murdering Mr Jonas Oldacre.He is fifty two years old unmarried,lives in Deep Dene House in Norwood.A man called John McFarlane was with the builder and we suspect at McFarlane and Inspector Lestrade of Scotland yard is investigating this most terrible crime.
'It's interesting, and can I ask something McFarlane,why the police have not arrested you yet?I understand from the newspaper at they are sure that you murdered him.
'I live in Torrington Lodge, Blackheath,wi h my parents but yesterday after my business,I stayed in a hotel and stayed there.I knew nothing about this crime until I was in train I read the story in newspaper and understood that I was in trouble. I'm sure that the police are at my father's house at Blackheath. And a man followed and-'
There was a knock at the street door. Inspector Lestrade entered the room with other two men.
'Are you John McFarlane?'he asked. The young man said 'Yes,I am.'.
Lestrade gave him a long look and said that ' I am arresting you for the murder of Jonas Oldacre,builder in South London.'
