Chapter 8: The Endgame

A/N: The pic above is the dress you wear just imagine it in a different color if you like.

"I still so not understand why you simply don't cancel the summit." Watson said to Mycroft as they, you, and Simza sit around the table, enjoying a meal. "The fact is it's gonna happen weather we like it or not. Everyone has already arrived, while ladies and gentlemen may be talking peace, believe me they're readying their armies at home. To cancel the summit now, would be tentamental war." said Mycroft.

"The telegram, wasn't it clear?" You asked the elder Holmes. "We have double the security, madam." Mycroft's butler informed you. "Oh doubled security? That's comforting." Simza said, sarcastically. "You don't understand the delicacy in this situation.  I passed the telegram on to my superiors, But they were the ones who have brought Moriarty to advice on the peace procrss in the first place. He has positiomed himself brilliantly as our of our formost intellectuals, he's a personal friend if the prime minister...." said Mycroft but you talk over him.

"Yes, we all know that." You said annoyed. "I believe you and Doctor Watson, but where's your evidence?" Mycroft asked. Watson leans closer to Mycroft and whispered. "He's too good to leave evidence. He doesn't leave loose ends." You hear footsteps and look up to see Holmes walking up the stairs with some sort of breathing mechanism in his mouth.

"Oh! He's alive!" Simza said as you give him a small smile. "Sherly, put that down!" Mycroft ordered as Holmes takes the breathing machine out of his mouth. "What is this contraption? May I have it? The effect is most invigorating." Holmes asked his older brother. "It is my private and personal supply of oxygen and you're not to touch it." said Mycroft firmly as Holmes set the contraption down on the nearby table.

Holmes waves his hand to show his brother he doesn't have the device anymore as Mycroft continues. "This argument is getting us nowhere. I've arranged documents to be prepared which will allow you into the ball."

"Stanley? Stanely!" Holmes shouted at the elder butler. The man doesn't reply nor makes an attempt to acknowledge Holmes at all. "You haven't aged a day." Holmes remarked making you chuckle as he goes and sits next to you. "The fact is we don't really know what he's planning." Mycroft said. "It won't be another bomb." You replied.

"That doesn't make sense." said Simza. "Why would he attack all nations, only to unite them?" Watson asked. "It will be an assassination. By a lone gunman at close range" Holmes replied as he stares at Simza. "Rene." She said. "Unfortunately, yes." replied Holmes. Simza stared at Holmes then said. "You knew."

"I had my suspicions but having seen who'd be attending I am now certain." He said. "Well at least we know who to look out for." said Mycroft. "Rene will be the evidence." You stated. "If we can find him and stop him we'll not only save his life but prevent the collapse of westeren civilization. No pressure." Holmes said, nonchantly.

Sometime later, you, Holmes, Watson, Simza and Mycroft make your way to the ball that was in a castle on top of a waterfall.  The men were in very nice and elegant suits, even Holmes cleaned up a bit and combed his hair. Simza is in a dark red and black ball gown, her hair done up in a bun. You were in a (favorite color) ball gown with a diamond necklace around your neck, Holmes gave it to you saying it was his mother's which you felt honored for wearing it.

Once you arrived at the ball, Holmes crooks his arm to you, you take it and the two of you enter the building. Holmes couldn't help but look at you. He didn't think it was possible for you to be even more beautiful than before but here you were, proving him wrong. You felt his gaze and looked up at him. "What?" You asked. "Just admiring the view." He replied, a small smile played at his lips.

You blush and smile as he leans towards you and kissed your cheek. You turn your head and smiled again as you lean in and kissed him on the lips. You and Holmes stopped in front of the door that leads to the ballroom and continued to kiss. You break the kiss and the two of you lean your foreheads together as you two stare into each other's eyes. "When this is over with and we get back home, I have something to talk to you about, (y/n)." Holmes whispers to you. "And what's that?" You asked him. "Now's not the time to talk about it, but I promise we will talk about it." Holmes replied and you nod as you and him straighten up and open the doors.

You and him walk over to Watson, Mycroft and Simza, who were all waiting for the two. "Now we're present, I can tell you the targets are the German Chancellor and his ambassador, the French Prime Minister and his man and the other nations are really working out which side to take, should hostilities erupt. As Prince Michael is a cousin of the Tsar and the Russian ambassador, Archduke Karl Ludwig and the austro-Hungarian ambassador, Romanian Prime Minister and his ambassador. And of course, our Prime Minsiter and the British Ambassador." Mycroft informed you and the others.

"He'll chose a moment when all the dignitaries are assembled....preferably standing still. Is there to be a official photograph?" Holmes asked. "Indeed. In...uh....thirty eight minutes." Mycroft replied as he looks down at his pocket watch. "In which case, might as well dance." Holmes said as he takes your hand and leads you out on the floor. "It's been awhile since I've done this." You remind him. "Just....follow....my...lead." He said to slowly, which made your heart skip a beat. You place your left hand on his right shoulder while his right hand wrapped around your waist and his left hand took your right and the two of you begin to waltz as the music grows louder.

As you two continue to dance, you notice that Holmes is looking off to the side but every now and then he would look at you. "What do you see?" You ask him. "Everything." He replied, making you smile. "That, as you know, is my curse." He mutters to you. "You call it a curse, I call it a gift." You said to him, making him raise his eyebrows at you. "You're a wonderful man, Sherlock, whether you believe it or not." You said. "Even when I'm, as you said, a selfish bastard?" Holmes asked with a smirk.

You roll your eyes and said. "Yes, even then, you're still a wonderful man." He chuckles, making you smile, as he leans in and kiss your cheek. He looks around him then he looks back at you with a serious look. "Everything alright, love?" You ask him. "Yes, I just need to talk to Watson." He replied then the two of you walk to the sides of the ballroom and walk up to Watson and Simza. Holmes reaches a hand out to Watson, who sighs and rolls his eyes. "I thought you'd never ask." Watson said, sarcastically, and the two begin to waltz off.

You chuckle as you look around and prayed that no one sees two full grown man dancing together.

Afterwhile, the men walk over to you and explain what they had just figured out which was that Dr Hoffmanstahl did a surgical experiment on people by removing their face and replacing it with a different look. So with that information that narrows down to one of the six ambassadors might be Simza's brother.

"You, (y/n) and Sim shall find her brother....of this I have no doubt." Holmes said to Watson. "Holmes." Watson said with concern. Holmes looks between you and Watson and said. "You know my methods."

"And we'll know where you'll be." You said. "No possible solution could be more congenial to me than this. By the way, who taught you how to dance?" Holmes asked Watson. Watson smiles and chuckles before replying. "You did."

"Well, I've done a fine job." Holmes said then he turns to you and said. "And you were magnificent as always." You smile then walk up to him and kissed him on the lips. "Be careful." You whispered in his ear then you kiss him again. He kissed back before he walks away and out the door.

You and Watson go to look for Simza in the ballroom. Once you found her, Watson whispers what you two learned and the plan. You look up and see Moriarty across the room, looking down at an envelope. You glared at the man with such hate as you watch him leave the room. "Shall we get to work?" Watson asked, looking between you and Simza, and the three of you begin to walk over to the other side of the room as a man stands up and said. "Ladies and gentlemen, please gather for the portrait."

The three of you walk along the room and look and observe as many people as you could. You three stop in the middle of the room and look around you. "Right, the surgery would've left scars." Watson states. "And only four of them have the hairline to hide them." You said. "They're all my brother's height, right build, but....their eyes. Their eyes are wrong. Rene has blue eyes." Simza informed you and Watson. "He could be wearing glass lenses to change the color." Watson replied to her.

"In which case his eyes would be hurting." You said as Simza looks between the four men. "Rene is left handed." She said as you see all four men were holding certain items in their right hand. "I think it might be him." Simza whispered, pointing at a man with a mustache and sideburns. "You think?" You asked her. "You have to be sure." Watson said, sternly, to her.

She continues to stare at the man for a few more minutes. "If I tackle the wrong man to the ground, we start a war." Watson warns her. "I don't know." said Simza as she continues to look at the suspects. Watson looks around and notice a man setting up a camera and he whispers his plan to her then he informs you to stay and watch as he walks over to the photographer.

Watson walks by a man carrying a tray of drinks and slaps the tray out of his hand, causing all the ambassadors to look over at the same time. Watson waches the men, looking for the scars. You and Simza watch the men and you notice a man walking away from the group. Simza looks over at you and you look over at Watson, who nods at you.

You nod at her and she walks up to the man, who looked like he was about to pull out a gun from his coat. Simza places her hand on the man and said, in French. "My brother. I beg of you."

You and Watson watch the two as Rene said. "Sister, forgive me."

And he pulls out a gun and aims it at the ambassadors then pulls the trigger but luckily it didn't hit anyone as Watson tackles Rene doen to the ground. "Protect the Prime Minister." Mycroft ordered as you run over to Watson, who holds Rene down long enough for the guards to come and take the gun away and pull Rene to his feet.

"Germany will pay!!" Rene shouted as the guards drag him out of the ballroom. Simza begins to cry and you pull her into a hug as her brother screams out. "Germany will pay!!" Then he goes silent and you and Watson thought it was strange until Watson realized something. "No loose ends." He states and he begins to run out the door.

"Watson!" You shouted and you follow him out. "What happened?" Watson asked the guards, who jumped and try to push him away. "I'm a doctor." Watson said, raising his hands up. "Watson!" You shouted as you make it over to him. The guards start to block you away but Watson says. "She's my assistant."

And the guards move out of your way as you and Watson kneel down and see Rene convulsing. Watson looks him over and checks his pulse. You look at his leg and see a familiar dart sticking out of Rene's thigh. You pull it out and show Watson.

"What's wrong with him?" Simza asked as she runs over to you two. "Curare." Watson said after he tasted the dart and spits out the residue. "Poison." You said. "Do something!" Simza shouted at you two but you and Watson stand up and glare across the room as Simza holds her dying brother in her arms and she begins to cry when he stops convulsing. You let out a deep sigh as you felt awful for Simza, knowing what it's like to lose a sibling.

"I'm going to check on Holmes." You said to Watson and you run out of the hallway and towards a room that had a door that leads to a balcony. You open the door and see Holmes has his arms wrapped around Moriarty's neck.

You look at him and he gives you a look that says I'm sorry as he closes his eyes and uses his right foot to kick both him and Moriarty off of the balcony and they fall. You stop and everything freezes as you couldn't believe at what you just witness. Time slowed down for you as you felt your heart stop beating.

"No. No." You whispered, softly, as you run over to the ledge and look over it. Just barely towards the bottom you were able to make out the shadowy forms of Moriarty and Holmes falling towards the waterfall.

"No. No. No! No!" You shouted, tearfully, as you sink slowly to the ground and wrap your arms around yourself as you let out a loud cry. You let some tears fall down your face as you hear the door open and see Watson walking in.

"(Y/N)? What's wrong? Where's Holmes?" He asked, quickly. You hiccup as you try to stop yourself but the pain kept hitting you. Watson walks over to you as he helps you to your feet as he looks you over. "(Y/N)?" He said with concern.

"He's....he's.....he's..g..g...go....gone." You choked in between sobs and you lean into Watson's shoulder and begin to cry. "What?" Watson asked. You point towards the ledge and said. "Him and Moriarty....fell off. They're gone." You said and Watson looks at the ledge then over at you in shock. Finally he understands and he wraps you in a tight hug and holds you close as you cry some more.

He looks down at the table and sees a blanket on one one of the chairs and noticed something on the blanket. He places a hand on your shoulder, signaling you to move yourself away from his shoulder as you look up at him with your tear-stained eyes. He walks over to the chair and notices a little black box on top of it. He picks it up and looks at it with curiosity.

"What is it?" You asked him. Watson opens the box to reveal a gold ring with (your birthstone) sitting on top it. You gasped and placed your hands over your mouth as fresh tears forms into your eyes. Watson looks at it then over at you and hands the ring box to you. "I'm so sorry, (y/n)." He whispered as you take the box.

When this is over with and we get back home, I have something to talk to you about, (y/n).

You put one hand ovet your lips and said. "He was going to propose." And then you fall to your knees and let out an agonizing  scream that would forever haunt Watson as he kneels next to you and holds you close to him.

A few words may suffice to tell the little that remains, any attempt at finding the bodies was absolutely hopless. (Y/N) and I are still there....feep down in that dreadful cauldron of swirling water and seething foam, alive for all time....the most dangerous criminal and foremost champion of the law of their generation. (Y/N) and I shall ever regard him as the best and wisest man, whom we've ever known.

Watson was finishing the paragraph as Mary walks in to his study. It had been few days since that night in Switzerland. The funeral already happened even though no body was found but there was no way anyone could've survived that fall. You were an emotional and physical wreck.

Mrs Hudson told Watson that you don't eat, you don't speak and some nights she hears you cry in your sleep. Watson would, of course, come to Baker Street to check on you since he was the only person you would speak to. He really didn't want to go back to the flat as he held too many memories but he trudge through for the sake of his friend.

Days went by and little by little you were getting better but you still wouldn't eat or sleep much. The two of you, along with Scotland Yard, Mrs Hudson and Mary went to Holmes's funeral and it was a very emotional day for the two of you.

"John." Mary said. "Mhmm." Watson hums as he types. "You should probably pack, it's half past two and the carraige comes at four." Mary said and Watson replied with a grunt. "It's going to be a beautiful weekend in Brighton." She said. Watson smiles and nods as he continues. "Yes, it will be fun. I'm looking forward to it." He said.

"You know....I miss him too. In my own way." She said as Watson finished by putting THE END. "He would've wanted us to go." Watson said with a smile. "He would've wanted to come with us, along with (y/n)." Mary replied as she smiles at her husband.

"Speaking of (y/n), when is she coming to get Gladstone?" Mary asked.

"Right now." Your voice said as you walk in making the Watson's jump. "I'm sorry the door was open and I...." You said as you walk into the study. "No, no. It's alright." Watson said. Mary smiles at you as she walks out of the room.

Watson looks at you and noticed that you had a gold chain around your neck with the ring attached to it. "See that you're wearing it." Watson states as he points at the necklace. You look down at it and fiddled with the ring. "Yeah, I just...um...." You stuttered. "It's alright, (y/n)." Watson said and you nod at him.

He looks over his desk and sees a brown package. He opens it and sees a brown box. He pulls the box out of the wrapper and slides it open to reveal Mycroft's oxygen mechanism. "What the...?" You said as you walk up to Watson's desk and look at the device. Watson looks up at you in shock as the two of you look into each other's eyes.

"Mary! Who delivered this parcel?" Watson asked as he gets up from his chair. "The postman." Mary replied. "The usual chap or...did he look peculiar?" He asked as both you and him walk out of the study.

Little did you know sitting in the red chair in the study across from Watson's desk, camouflaged, Sherlock Holmes. He removes the mask and looks around the room. Gladstone whines at him and Holmes raises a finger to his lips, silencing the dog. Gladstone settles back down as Holmes walks over to the desk and reads the last page Watson typed. He thinks it over and puts in a punctuation.

THE END?
