Chapter 1: The Game is Afoot

The year was 1891. Storm clouds were brewing over Europe. France and Germany were at each others throats. The result of a series of bombings. Some said it was nationalists, Others the anarchists.
But as usual Sherlock Holmes had a different theory entirely.

In the bustling streets of London, a man, carrying a package, walks along the street as the paperboy shouts out the news of a bombing at Strasbourg.

At one point he passes by a woman, who takes the package from his hands and walks the other direction. The woman in question is Irene Adler. As she walk along, she catches the eye of a female beggar. The beggar, who's head is covered by a hood and a shroud covering her face only able to see her (e/c) eyes, gets up to her feet and follow Irene a few miles.

Irene, sensing someone was following her, stops and looks over her shoulder but doesn't see anyone suspicious. She shrugs and continues on until someone walks up next to her. "When did you start working for the postal service, sister dear?" She hears a familiar female voice ask. She looks over and sees the familiar (e/c) eye staring at her.

She smiles as she says. "That was you back there. A shame your activities have landed you in the gutter." You chuckle as you and your sister continue to walk along the busy street. "A curious parcel, who is the intended recipient?" You ask as you take the parcel out of her hands. She smirks and said. "Why don't we discuss that over dinner? We have alot of catching up to do."

"I'm free for lunch." You replied.

"Hmmm. I'm not." She replied. "How about Savoy? Eight o'clock?"

"Splendid!" You said with a small smile as you two turn a corner.

You look around and move in closer to Irene and whispered. "Three men have been following you for the last half mile. Their motive....highly unsavoiry." The two of you look around as she whispers to you. "No." And she leads you down to an alleyway when at that moment, four men start to walk out and swarm around you and your sister.

"Oh, by the way.....they're not pursuing me, they're escorting me. And instead of three, it seems to be....ah four." Irene said as she takes back the parcel from your hand, stands in front of you and smiles. "Steady hands with that, Irene." You warned.

"Oh, I don't think it's my hands you've to worry about." She said as the men start to walk closer to you.

"Oh, how I love playing your games, Irene." You said, sarcastically. She smiles at you then looks at the men and said. "Now, be careful with the face, boys. Go little easy on her. After all she is my sister and we have a family dinner tonight." She smiles and waves at you and begins to walk away.

One of the men comes up to you and pulls the hood off of your head. You blink in the sunlight as another man walks up to you and grabs the shroud from your face and pulls it off, revealing the rest of your face. "Now, gentlemen, you wouldn't hurt a lady, would you?" You asked, little nervously.

The men continued to circle you, one of them chuckled while a couple others cracked their knuckles. Then one of them starts to whistle Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. Something about that made you feel unnerved, you weren't quite sure why. The whistling man stops as they move closer to you until another voice starts to whistle the rest of the song.

"Four men against one woman?" A voice asked. The men turn around and you sigh with relief as you see your rescuer. "Rather unfair, I would say." Holmes said.

One of the men runs over to him but he was able to dodge the man, who falls face forward on the ground. You look over at the man standing in front and punched him across the face. The man stumbles back then charges at you but you duck and the man hits the wall that's behind you. You smile as you run over to Holmes, who is struggling with a man that's trying to punch him but Holmes is blocking his attacks. You kick the back knees of the man and he screams out as his knee buckles. You grab the man's shoulder and drag him away from Holmes.

Then both you and Holmes stand close together, back to back, as the men start to surround you. "So glad you decided to join me, love. Almost thought you abandoned me." You said, in a mock hurt voice. "Now, why would I do that?" Holmes asked you. "I don't know. Thought you might've found me boring." You said, sarcastically. Holmes chuckles as the men walk closer to you two. "I could never find you boring." He replied. "Oh, good to know." You said as one of the men started to come at you two but then two police officers walk by.

The men stop and tried to act casual while Holmes takes your arm and places you against the wall. He stands close in front of you, both his hands braced agasint the wall on either side of your head while you pull on his collar and kiss him. The officers look down thd street at you two and the other gentlemen, who are just walking around.

Not seeing anything wrong, the officers begin to move away as the same time you and Holmes break the kiss. The two of you look eye contact for a moment and you can tell that his mind is working out a plan. He looks over at the men, who are standing and staring at you two, then he looks back at you, giving you a knowing look.

You nod and Holmes moves away from you just as one of the thugs throws an apple in the air. Another thug pulls out a knife and runs at Holmes with it but he takes the man's arm, spins him around and makes him stab the other thug that was coming at Holmes. Then he takes the second thugs hand and bends it back, taking out two thugs.

The third thug, carrying a club, comes at him but you grab his arm and move it to the side then, with all your strength, flip him over on his back.

The last thug comes up with a gun but Holmes quickly disarms him and points the gun at him and catches the fallen apple. He tosses it on the ground the takes the bullets out of the gun and hands it back to the thug, who stares at him in disbelief.

Holmes acts like he's going to come at the guy, making him flinch, then he smiles, walks over to you, takes your hands and the two of you head off. You tell him about the package that Irene had and the two of you break into a run.

The two of you make it into the building where an auction was going on. You look around and see your sister sitting next to an old man. Both you and Holmes walk over to her and see the man is about to open the box. Holmes grabs one of the number paddles and stops a metal bar from hitting the box, once the two of you sit behind them.

"Hold it, hold it, hold it. Don't move." Holmes said, very quickly. Irene looks over at you and him, glaring at you two. You smile at her as Holmes said. "Judging by the size and the weight (y/n) told me, it's not payment you were expecting. I'd wager the contents are rather more incendiary."

"Who are these people?" The man asked Irene.

"It's uhhh." She stutters and you wrap an arm around her shoulder and said.
"Hello, sister." And you hug her close as you take the envelope, that she had in her hand.

The man removes the paper and reveals a mechanical device attached to dynamite inside the box. "Oh dear. I told you not to move it." Holmes said. "It seems a secondary charge has been activated." Irene starts to get up but you hold her down and said. "Sister dear, we might need your help in the disposal of this parcel." You look around as you hear the auctioner say. "One thousand six hundred.....one thousand seven hundred....one thousand eight hundred."

"Well, good luck!" Irene said, trying to leave again but you stop her as Holmes stands up and said. "One million pounds." Everyone in the room turns to him and stares at him in shock.

You and Holmes look behind you and see a canvas starting to catch fire. "Oh, and by the way, fire." You said, very casually. Everyone started to leave even Irene. "Leave our side and you'll be dead within an hour." Holmes warned her. She rolls her eyes then turns to you.

"Don't be late for dinner, sister dear." She said then she looks over at Holmes and said. "You're welcome to join, Holmes. I expect my schedule be quite right because of these activities here." She walks closer to you and gives you a hug and you feel her hand going into your pocket.

"Very witty, sister dearest. But I'm afraid, Holmes has what you are looking for. We'll hold onto it. Maybe we might read it together." You said with a small smile. Irene smiles and said. "Alright." And with that she leaves.

Holmes turns to the man and grabs the parcel. "Stay....Trust me. We do this for a living." Holmes said as he runs over to the sarcophagus, that was being auctioned off, and throws the parcel inside.

"Here Hogfmanstahl, you should count yourself lucky." You said to the man as you run up next to Holmes as he closes the coffin and the two of you wheel it to the other side of the room through a door that keads to a vault.

"This faceless man with whom you find yourself in business is no ordinary criminal. He is the Napoleon of crime." You explained as you two he the coffin in the vault.

"Fortuantly, you now have us as an ally. I'm a consulting detective of some repute. This lovely woman with me is my assistant. Perhaps you've heard of me. My name is Sherlock Hol...." and at that moment there was a blast in the coffin and dust burst out, making you and the detective cough. "Holmes." He finished.

You wave your hand in front of you as you walk out and see that the man has left. "He's gone." You said. Holmes looks around and leads you out of the building.

The two of you walk out of the building and start to walk away when Holmes turns around, very quickly. Curious as to what made him turn around, you turn as well and see a man wearing a hat, a dark beard and he seemed to be watching you two. He looks away from you two and you look over at Holmes as you walk forward, pushing past the crowded people.

You come up and see, leaning against the wall of a building, the old man, pale as a ghost. Holmes checks his pulse and he shakes his head at you. You look the man over and noticed something on his leg. You reach out and pull out a dart. "Holmes." You said as you show him the dart. He takes it and looks it over. He looks back at the crowd and noticed that the man, that was staring at you two, was gone. He raises his eyebrows and pockets the dart and the two of you make a run for it back to Baker Street.
