Chapter 29 - Ridge Farm / Michael Meddows / 1975 / Part 4
POV Isabella
On July 18, Robert, son of Veronica and John were born. He's beautiful, like both of them. I was delighted with the baby. On the 19th of July Bri made his birthday and turned twenty-eight. And on the twenty-sixth of July Rog made his birthday and turned twenty-six. My friend and boyfriend are aging, though, always with a baby face. Rog celebrated his birthday at a pub in London and the next day with a lunch. His mother Winifred, came from Truro, for his son's birthday. Clare was also present. After Rog's birthday, he and I went to Brighton, enjoying the summer of the United Kingdom. We stayed for a week at my grandparents' house and we enjoyed our stay in the seaside town and had a good time.
On the last night we were on the beach in Brighton, enjoying the summer, looking at the stars and the full moon, hugged, we saw the same gypsy we saw some time ago. She came toward us.
"I remembered that gypsy, the things she said to us," Rog said.
"Let's see what she says this time," I told him.
The gypsy came up smiling and said,
"You are soul mates, of other lives. You love each other very much, but you will experience a period of great turbulence.
Rog hugged me harder.
- You will suffer, but you will know how to face everything that is to come, in the end you will win. The love between you speaks louder, it is already written in the stars. Maktub. Roger and Isabella, you have a great mission together. Their way is a lot of light, despite some obstacles. In the end they will win. Keep the love one feels for the other in the heart. Said the gypsy, who continued to walk on the beach.
I made a point of going after her to ask more questions, but Rog caught me by the waist.
"I do not believe when she says we're going to be in turmoil." What I believe is in our great love, my kitty, in what we feel for each other. That's what I believe. "Rog smiled at me and kissed me.
I kissed him back, but what the gypsy told us was in my mind ...
August 1975
After Rog and I got back from Brighton, we set off for Ridge Farm, where the boys will spend a month recording the band's new album. We are in the summer and after Rog drives for an hour on the highway, we finally reach our destination. Rog parked his Alfa Romeo, inside the large parking lot. After he parked the car, Rog, Sue, Clare and I got out of the car. Rog hugged me by the waist and kissed me in love.
"I'm sure you'll like it here, my angel." It's in the middle of nature, "Rog said.
"Wow, my friend, it's really beautiful here," Sue said, smiling. "I'm sure we'll have a great time.
"Surely we'll have fun, girls," said Clare, my sister-in-law smiling, "Rog and Bella, let's have some fun this August. Here is the paradise.
"A paradise, lost and not so far from London," said Sue.
"I think you'll find the place beautiful," Rog said, smiling at me.
"Ridge Farm is very beautiful, my love, but you're much prettier," he said smiling to Rog, who was wearing knee-length jeans, a red All Star on his feet, a light blue T-shirt, a brown beret, and sunglasses.
"I tell you you're the most beautiful, my princess," Rog said, smiling and kissing me once more.
Ridge Farm is located in the village of Rusper, close to Surrey and Sussex. The oldest part of the building, originally a medieval farmhouse, was built in the 17th century. And additions to the building have been added over the centuries. The studio was surrounded by 12 acres (49,000 m2) of land including gardens, orchards, meadows, woods, swimming pools, tennis courts, horseback riding, game room, among other things.
We entered the great house we will stay in. Shortly after they arrived in the car of Bri, Chrissy, Freddie and John.
The next few days, while the girls and I during the day knew every bit of Ridge Farm, the boys started recording the band's new album.
A week later, we were already at Ridge Farm, I was in my room that I split with Rog, asleep, when I woke up listening to car rattling. Rog had already woken up. I look at the clock radio. It's nine in the morning. Today is Friday. Usually the boys record from Monday to Friday at ten in the morning at Ridge Farm and they go until eight at night. And on Saturdays from nine to noon. They have only the afternoon part of Saturday and the Sunday all day to relax and unwind and get to know the Ridge Farm. I got up with the carriage rushing. I look through the bedroom window and see that it is Roger, inside his Alfa Romeo, speeding up the car several times. Did you give trouble in my love car? I go into the bathroom and do my oral hygiene and change of clothes, and then I go down for coffee. I see my friends having coffee chatting happily and greeting everyone. I sit next to Clare and Sue.
"It's been half an hour since Rog is speeding up this bloody car, and I do not understand why, dear Bella," Freddie said, eating a loaf of cheese.
"I think it's been a problem with Rog's car," I said, putting some coffee in my cup.
A short time later, Rog enters the dining room and greets everyone and kisses me on the lips. Sue offers her place for Rog to be by my side and she sits next to Freddie.
- Your car is in trouble, my love? - I asked.
"No, my love, my car has no problem, I was speeding up my car because I ... Soon you will know, I promise," Rog said mysteriously.
I looked at my boyfriend without understanding, that's when he told me in the ear, softly smiling.
"It has to do with my new music, my love. I can only advance you.
I looked up at him and laughed at his comment and he kissed me.
"Couple, please coffee time," Freddie said.
We had coffee, happily and we talked. At ten in the morning the boys went to Ridge Farm and Chrissy, Sue, Clare and I went swimming in a large pond that is next to Ridge Farm.
And time was passing and I was enjoying and knowing everything. Until riding, Rog and I got it. The boys took advantage and played tennis, we even did photo shoots on the tennis courts with rackets, it was very funny and interesting. Mick Rock left London and went to Ridge Farm to do some photo shoots with the boys on Saturday afternoons. We stayed a month at Ridge Farm and it became unforgettable. I enjoyed it a lot, I swam in the river, I strolled in the woods, Rog and I met neighboring towns with our friends, we had a lot of love, we exchanged vows of love, we rode, Rog even participated in a truck race with the farm drivers and Rog won. These were wonderful days, and the boys during that time recorded four songs. There was a pub near the immediate vicinity of Ridge Farm, but the boys with the girls and I went only once there. During the month of August, the boys faithfully focused on recording the band's new album and I was proud of it. The boys' leisure time they played billiards, playing cards, dominoes, tennis, swimming in the big lake, near Ridge Farm, and riding. Rog loved the contact with nature, especially with me.
POV Roger
During the month of August while we were at Ridge Farm, Freddie, Deacy, Bri and I recorded four songs for the band's new album. The songs are: Death on Two Legs (Dedicated to) ... This song was written by Freddie, in honor of the great owners of Trident Studios, who only wanted to suck our energy and the money that we collected in tours and presentations in London. The song has many bad words, that even Bri and I feel ashamed to sing, but, we sing. The other song we recorded was Lazing on a Sunday Afterrnoon, also composed by Freddie who talks about a Sunday afternoon of much laziness. We recorded the song Sweet Lady, composed by Bri and the other song was Seaside Rendezvous, which Freddie composed.
When we return to London we will have much more work to do.
Finally at the end of August, Jim Beach was able to break Trident's contract with Queen. The agreement exempted us from all the agreements previously established and Queen's publishing rights were handed over to EMI and EMI recording contracts in the United Kingdom and with Elektra in the rest of the world and we would no longer be prosecuted by Trident, , Trident will receive compensation of £ 100,000 for the dissolution of the contracts - an amount covered by an advance offered by EMI and Trident will still be entitled to 1% of the royalties from the next six albums of the band.
So the guys and I get rid of Trident, but, we're in debt now with EMI. We really need to record an album that takes us to stardom with Queen, otherwise our careers of musicians will go into the abyss.
September 1975.
On September 2nd, the last day of lodging at Ridge Farm, we said goodbye to all the staff at the place.
When we were returning to London while I drove the car, Clare and Sue slept in the back seat of the car and Bella was sitting next to me smiling, feeling the wind hit her face. I drove with one hand at the wheel, while the other I intertwined with my girlfriend's hand. Bella looked at me beautifully and we kissed quickly, before I continued driving.
On September 4, Freddie, Bri, Deacy and I went into the studio to continue the recording of the album and that same night, having a few drinks and watching my apartment in the movie A NIGHT AT THE OPERA, a comedy of brothers Marx, released in 1935. By the end of the film, everyone was pensive, as if we had the same thought, but it was Freddie who commented:
- So that's it dear, this will be the name of our new album: A NIGHT AT THE OPERA, since it will perfectly match the music I'm finishing composing called BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY.
"I'm curious to record Bohemian Rhapsody." I said, lighting a cigarette.
"Soon my dear ones," smiled Freddie.
"So let it be the name of our fourth album," Deacy said, smoking too.
"Put out those crazy cigarettes," Brian said, taking a glass of juice.
POV Isabella
Fourth of September. Friday. I went to buy some things at the grocery store for the celebration of Freddie's birthday, which is tomorrow. We'll all go to a pub, but I'll do a little celebration for him in my apartment on Sunday. I'll make him a special lunch, Rog and our friends. Soon my work as a university English teacher returns, as does my Master's degree. My Spanish classes are back. By the time I am entering the supermarket, a man approaches me, saying,
"Miss, please, a minute of your attention.
I look closely at the man, who appears to be around his fifty-two. He is blonde, with short straight hair and big bright blue eyes. Are those beautiful blue eyes identical to Roger's?
"No," I say. - Who are you?
"You're Roger Meddows Taylor's girlfriend, are not you?" The man asks.
"I repeat, who are you?" I ask again.
- My name is Michael Meddows. I'm Roger's father. Said the man.
I took my hand to my mouth, amazed.
So this is the man who beat Roger in his childhood and adolescence and beat up Winifred.
To be continued.
