Chapter 3: He's back

Recap:

"May I use the restroom?" I asked politely. She nodded and handed me the bathroom pass telling me that I only had 5 minutes to use the restroom. I thanked her and walked out the door. When I was near the restrooms, I saw a tall figure leaning against the lockers. I gasped as I saw the side of their face. The sound of the bathroom pass clattering to the floor startled them and they turned around all the way.

"Athena?"

"Leo?"

-----

"What are you doing here?" I asked. I was still in a state of shock. Leo has been gone for 6 years, he disappeared from my life for 6 years, and now he's suddenly standing before me. It doesn't make any sense. I thought he was still in France. I wonder if Via knew about this.

"I decided to come back. It was about time," Leo replied. He stuffed his hands in his pockets and stared at me. Leo looked a lot different from how I remembered him. The once skinny boy that was always teasing me and making fun of me had grown into a young, handsome man. Just because I didn't like doesn't mean i can't admit that he looks cute now. Honestly, it just makes me dislike him even more. His black hair was shaved on the sides and sticking up on the top.

His piercing blue eyes stared down at me as I continued to look him over. He had to be at least 6 foot, which means he's almost a foot taller than me. I could tell that he was studying me too. his eyes were traveling up and down, as if he was scanning me. I hadn't changed that much over the years. I was still the same ugly duckling that I was 6 years ago. Leo, however, would definitely have all the girls falling head over heels for him.

"So, how have you been?" Leo asked me. "Fine," I said. I still couldn't believe he was actually here. The more I think about it, the more I think Via already knew about Leo's surprise homecoming. That's why she was so happy this morning. She knew he was coming back and she didn't tell me. That sneaky little bitch. Via knows how much I hate Leo.

He was always making fun of me and pulling pranks. I can't even begin to describe how many times I was hurt because of him. "That's it?" Leo asked jokingly. "I've been gone for 6 years and all you have to say to me is 'fine'. How about a 'I am good' or a 'how are you?"

"You really think that I would be nice to you after all these years. You bullied me and teased me. My life was horrible because of you. Every little shred of happiness I ever had was torn away because of you. You made sure that everybody hated me. You turned everyone against me. you seriously think that I can forget all that?"

By this point tears were streaming down my cheeks. I hated him. Even after all these years I still held a grudge towards him. He made my life hell, and didn't even care. He just did whatever he pleased, without a care in the world as to who he hurt. I was lucky that I had Via by my side all those years. She made everything so much better. Via always stood up for me and made me feel better.

Everybody hated me, Leo convinced me of that. But Via was the one who convinced me not to give in to their constant teasing and bullying and to just ignore all the haters. In her words "All the people who hate on you know are going to work at McDonald's their whole life."

He ruined my life. I could never forgive him. I hated myself even more, because when I first met him, I had a crush on him. Although, that went away after a year because I realized how much of an ass he really was. "Listen, Athena, I'm really sorry about everything that I did to you as a child. I was stupid and didn't know how to control my actions."

I looked away from Leo. Does he really think apologizing will fix the years worth of damage he did to me? It took me 2 years after he left to realize that he was wrong. That I actually did have plenty of people who loved me. But then, that night happened and all the depression I had been feeling came rushing back.

Luckily, I had Via and my father to help me come back into the light. They were my only family, and I loved them. I would do anything for them. They were always there for me. I turned away from Leo and went into the bathroom. There was no one in there, so I locked myself in one of the stalls and cried. The tears just kept coming and coming. They wouldn't stop. The collar of my shirt was soaked in tears that had slid down my cheeks and onto my shirt.

My nose was runny and I had already used up the last of the toilet paper in this stall. Sighing, I got up, unlocked the stall, and grabbed some paper towels to wipe my nose with. Then, I looked in the mirror to access my appearance.

My eyes were all red and puffy and my cheeks were stained with tears. Splashing my face with ice cold water helped a little bit, but not a lot. After a couple minutes of staring at myself in the mirror, I exited the bathroom. I just hope that I don't have any classes with Leo.

I don't know what I'd do if I had to see his face everyday. Eventually, I had to go back to class. It was only the first day of school and my life was already turning into a complete and utter mess. I walked back into the classroom and prepared myself for what was coming. "Athena! What took you so long? I said you had 5 minutes and you have been gone for almost 20!" The french teacher, Mrs. Willis shouted at me.

"I'm really sorry. I promise it won't happen again," I pleaded. "It better not, because if it does you will get a detention." Great, could this day get any worse? French was over before I knew it. I grabbed my bag and headed towards the cafeteria. I needed to talk to Via.

When I entered, I saw Via already sitting down at an empty table with a tray of food in her hands. I stormed over to her. "Why didn't you tell me your brother was coming back?" I whisper-yelled. It was getting harder and harder to control my anger. Her eye's went wide. "Oh my God! I'm so sorry. I forgot to tell you. I guess I was so happy that I was going to see him after 6 years, and I knew you didn't like him."

"He told me that he was going to be coming to our school or his senior year, but not until later in the year. I was praying that you wouldn't have any classes with him. I really am sorry. I should have told you, but I also didn't think he was coming back this soon." I couldn't stay mad at Via. It was understandable. She missed her brother and knew all the pain he caused me and she didn't want their reunion to be spoiled by Leo being mean to me again. I walked around the table and hugged her.

I knew what it was like to miss your brother.

We talked for the rest of lunch about how our day was going so far. I told her about what happened with Leo and about my anatomy teacher. Via told me about her teachers and classmates. Apparently, her long time crush, Xander, was in her pre-calculus class. The bell rang and we said goodbye. My next class was calculus.

Why did I have to take math? It was by far the most boring subject out of all of them. Whoever says they love math is lying. Nobody could possibly love math. My math class flew by. Before I knew it, it was time for PE. Yay! I thought sarcastically.

I'm not the most athletic person. I did a couple sports when I was younger, but nothing serious. I never really had any interest in running around sweating. It doesn't seem appealing. Since it's only the first day of school, the teacher probably won't make us do too much. Maybe a game of dodgeball or something after she goes over the rules.

The gym was already filled with at least half my class, including Leo. Great. Why does he have to be in this class? I walked over to Via who just so happened to be standing next to Leo. "Hey, Via," I greeted her, ignoring Leo. Right now, I really didn't want to talk to him. Just then, the teacher walked in and told us all to take a seat until the bell rang.

Once everyone had arrived, the teacher passed out a sheet of paper with all the rules on it. "Now, this needs to be signed by a parent saying they understand the risk of injury during Physical Education." Seriously, what is with the teachers and making our parents sign all these forms just to participate in stuff.

The school probably just wants them to sign it so the school doesn't get sued if something bad happens. A lot of bad things have been happening lately. Once everybody had a sheet of paper, the teacher began to go down the list of all the rules. No gum or cell phones in class, no wearing inappropriate clothing in class, no swearing, etc.

This day was turning out to be really boring. I can't wait until it is over. "Now that I have gone over all the rules, who wants to play some dodgeball?" All the students cheered. Dodgeball was one of the few sports that almost everyone at the school enjoyed. Most people liked it because they got to throw things at people.

The teacher divided us into 2 teams. Of course she just had to put Via on the other team and Leo on my team. 'Sorry' Via mouthed to me as she walked to the other side of the gym. God, please let this not suck. "On your mark, get set, GO!" The gym teacher shouted. Everybody took off towards the balls, trying to get as many onto their side as they could.

I stayed back not wanting to get out in the first seconds of the game. Once all the balls were on either side, it was game on. People were throwing them in all directions. Screams of frustration could be heard when somebody got out. The people who were out were screaming at the people that were in, shouting at them to win.

Somehow, there was only 2 people left in the game, and I was one of them. Sadly, Leo was the only one left on my team besides me. The other team had 3, making the odds unfair. I just kept dodging the whole time, not wanting to get hit. "LET'S GO ATHENA. YOU CAN DO THIS!" I looked over and saw Via cheering for me even though we were on opposite teams.

"ATHENA! WATCH OUT!" I heard someone yell. I turned back to the game just in time to see a red blur heading straight for my face.

--

Ughhh! Why is my head killing me? I opened my eyes and groaned. What happened to me? I looked around and realized that I was in the nurse's office. Then, the memories all came flooding back. Via cheering for me, me being distracted by her voice, and someone shouting at me to watch out.

Sitting in a chair next to my bed was Leo with a worried expression on his face. "What are you doing here?" I scowled at him. His eyes snapped over to me at the sound of my voice. "You got hit in the face with a dodgeball and I offered to take you to the nurse's office," Leo replied.

The nurse came in and told me that I was all cleared to go back to class. I thanked her and grabbed the paper she handed me saying that I was cleared and didn't have a concussion. Leo stayed silent behind me as we walked back to class.

I still couldn't wrap my head around the fact that Leo was being nice to me. He's never been nice to me. When we were little and Via and I had sleepovers at their house, he was always pulling pranks on me. It was his favorite thing to do, besides teasing me about the way I look.

By the time Leo and I got back to class, there was only 10 minutes left. "Welcome back Athena. Just take a seat on the bench since class is almost over already. You too, Leo," the gym teacher says as she points to the bench. Wordlessly, we both walked over and sat down on the bench.

As much as I hate Leo, I did miss him over the past 6 years. Don't get me wrong, it was great not being pranked and teased everyday. But, part of me missed the little ways I would get back at Leo. My pranks were never as grand as his, but were small and subtle.

For example, Leo always kept a secret stash of Oreo's under his bed. One night, before he got home from baseball practice, I took some Oreo's and filled them with toothpaste. It was a basic prank, but I didn't believe in hurting others just for fun. Most of the time, Leo always discovered what my pranks were. I only pranked him a handful of times because of this.

The sound of the school bell ringing snapped me out of my thoughts. Finally, I can go home and sleep and eat a bunch of food like always.

I hoped you guys liked this chapter. It was kind of a filler chapter, but I still wanted to give you a little insight on what their lives were like before Leo and Via's mother died.

Have you guys ever been hit in the face playing dodgeball? If you haven't, just know it hurts.

Have you tried to prank someone? My sister tried to prank me with the Oreo's and toothpaste but I found out before she could.
