She sat waiting...
She sat waiting on the porch, tired but nevertheless hopeful.
She had been there for quite a long time.
Every time she heard the sound of a vehicle, her legs tensed to get up. But she never did.
She had been quite anxious the day before. But when she opened her eyes, all of it was gone. She was completely confident...
The setting sun coloured streaks of her black hair brown.
Barefoot, with her black leather boots by her side, she was almost invisible on the blue porch in her lapis knee- length cocktail dress and a cerulean bandanna around the crown of her head.
Another Sedan passed by and she couldn't contain her disappointment. Her chocolate brown eyes welled up with tears but she blinked them back.
One escaped, but she wiped it away with a fuchsia- nailed finger.
She looked into the orchid dial of her periwinkle- banded watch.
She pulled out her lavender phone from her indigo handbag. It was out of charge, so it didn't switch on. She threw it back in her bag frustratedly, her jade bracelet glistening in the sun.
She stretched her cramped feet, the movement making her sapphire choker twinkle in the rays of the setting sun.
She grew more and more frustrated...
After some time, she pulled off her bandanna and fastened her hair with an emerald brooch from her bag. As she pulled back her hair, her cyan chandelier earrings came into sight.
Her stomach growled with hunger. All she had that was edible was a box of Ferrero Rochers. She'd bought them as a gift, so her mind wouldn't let her eat them, not even one.
An electric red Hyundai and a silver Chevrolet passed by. Still nothing.
She couldn't walk anywhere. Her feet went totally numb. She massaged them, but they felt no better except for the numbness.
A black Volkswagen stopped inches away. A young man clad in plum trousers and a chrome shirt with peat brown sneakers came out of the car and walked up to her.
She tried to get up, but couldn't.
He looked at her bare feet and then at her anxious ovalish face.
He took out a map from his pocket and pointed at a spot to show her. She looked at it and pointed out the right direction. He smiled at her and left.
Her heart dropped all the way down to her stomach.
She couldn't help it anymore. She started crying.
The Volkswagen came back. The man ran out of his car carrying a ruby jacket and a teal bag.
He offered her the bag and draped the jacket around her shoulders. He opened the bag and showed the food inside to her.
"For you." he said.
"Thank you, but I can't..."
"You have to take it." he said and grinned.
Then, he left.
Though she was quite hungry, she didn't eat any of the food he'd given her. Atleast, not right away...
After a long internal debate between her mind and her heart, she decided to dig in.
As she was about to put the first morsel into her mouth, she saw a young boy.
In tatters, the boy appeared famished and thirsty.
Without consuming even a single morsel, she offered all the food to him.
His eyes widened when he saw how much she had.
She smiled and gave him the bag. She also gave him the jacket.
The boy's face lit up with a thousand- watt smile.
He sat next to her. She made some space for him to sit comfortably.
The boy ate some of the food and returned the bag back to her.
She smiled and shook her head, giving him back the bag.
The boy looked at her in astonished shock.
He then hugged her and ran off with both of his presents.
She smiled, fondly remembering his innocent smile.
A while later, the boy came back, panting.
He put a diamond- studded gold bracelet into her hands.
When she looked at the boy's face with an inquisitive look, he gestured to the pocket of the ruby jacket and ran off.
While she was thinking about what to do with the bracelet all the while marvelling at the boy's honesty, she heard the sound of a car.
When she looked up, she saw that it was the Volkswagen. The man came out again walking. She gave him the bracelet.
The man looked very happy. He thanked her and left. Again.
Then, she was alone.
This time, no one came back.
Fed up with it, she laid her head back and closed her eyes.
After what seemed like an eternity, a hand shook her arm. She started awake.
It was the man and the boy, together.
The man informed her that the boy was his cousin. They were both orphans and had no one except the other. The boy had run off in fear.
He would have died of starvation, if she hadn't given him the food, and / or cold, if she hadn't given him the jacket.
The man thanked her profusely and offered her some money and food.
She refused.
When he arched his eyebrow, she said, "I am still capable of earning money. Give it to someone who isn't."
"But you are starving, aren't you??"
"It's okay." she replied, with a firm shake of her head.
They thanked her again and they left.
She sat waiting...
