Chapter 13- She's the King of New York
Her eyes light up as she sees Jack with no new injuries or indication of hurtful words said. Her impossible boy is standing next to her father and for some reason she feels that everything is going to be okay. In fact, Jack is smiling at the boys, at the governor and then his eyes wander to Katherine. Finally, Jack shouts addressing the crowd beneath him, Pulitzer, and Roosevelt who had remained outside the double doors the whole time,
"Newsies of New York City! We won!" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Caps fly up into the air and cheers erupt into the air. Katherine stands cheering and she wanders over to her father.
"Katherine, I know it doesn't seem like it," Pulitzer begins looking at his daughter, "but I am very happy that you did what you did." Katherine smiles and throws her arms around her father in a crushing hug. She asks him,
"So, what did the two of you come to? Obviously, you lowered the price of papers, but how did it happen?"
"Well, Jack and I agreed that I could buy back what the boys do not sell. Mr. Kelly said the boys may buy a few more papes if he knows that what he does not sell will be bought back later." Pulitzer answers with a sigh. Katherine pulls away smiling at him.
"I'm going to go talk to Jack," she says smiling and she runs down to join the boys just as Jack introduces Roosevelt to the boys.
"And now I would like to introduce my very own personal pal, Governor Theodore Roosevelt," (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Jack says and the group standing below the World's balcony applaud politely. Governor Roosevelt steps forward.
"Each generation at the height of its power step aside and invite the young to seize the day. You have laid way to our world. Now I believe the future in your hands will be bright and prosperous," (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) he finishes and the boys applaud. Jack looks proud and Katherine beams back up at him. They won the strike, she made a bunch of new friends, realized she could have feeling for someone like Jack Kelly, and got herself one amazing story not just to tell other reporters, but to write it for herself. Maybe the Sun would take her back once they realized what they were missing. One fantastic female reporter who could turn any story into something a Newsie would be willing to hawk as a headline or an ordinary office worker or factory worker would be interested in reading. Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of police whistles. Jack stands up straight, ready to protect Katherine and the boys at all costs necessary. Suddenly, Crutchy comes strolling onto the square, several other young boys walking behind him. A young girl with long black hair and thick black eyebrows follows the small crowd of boys nervously. Katherine watches as she sees Davey eyeing her with a concerned look. The young girl looks very fragile and uncomfortable among the small crowd of boys.
"Heya fellas! Miss me?" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Crutchy asks and Jack nearly tackles him in a hug. Crutchy turns to Jack excitedly pointing, "Oh and look what I gots for ya! A gift straight from da Refuge. Bring him in boys!" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) The cops come in pulling Snyder with them. Katherine smiles as the Governor steps forward.
"It's Snyder da Spider!" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) One of the Newsies cries out and Katherine smiles at the goofy nickname. This man had attempted to hurt the Newsies, her Newsies, more than once and now it was going to end. For good.
"He ain't lookin so tough anymore," (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) another Newsie remarks. Jack comes and stands next to her, smiling as the scene in front of them unfolds just as he had been wanting it to for so long now.
"Jack, your drawings made an eloquent argument for shutting down the Refuge. Be assured that Mr. Snyder's abuses will be fully investigated. Officers! Take him away!" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Roosevelt declares. Jack gently reaches over and hugs Katherine.
"Tanks, Ace. You saved me and da boys from our worst nightmare," He whispers quietly into her ear. Katherine nods and answers with
"Anytime, Kelly." Meanwhile, Crutchy calls over to Roosevelt and the officers,
"Oh please! Your Highness, may I do the honors?" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Roosevelt nods and Crutchy walks over to handcuff Snyder.
"You've got to be joking me," Snyder groans as Crutchy handcuffs him with a wide grin on his face. It makes Katherine happy that justice is finally being served to someone who has been after the Newsies for so long.
"An you'll be laughin all da way to da pen, little man! So long, sucker!" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Crutchy exclaims happily as he kicks Snyder in the rear. Katherine and Jack laugh softly as Snyder glares in the direction of the laughing newsboys. Pulitzer smiles as he looks down at the amazing drawings before him. Perfectly crafted by the boy he once hated and was beginning to have an ever so slightly increasing amount of respect for. Katherine looks up when her father clears his throat and says,
"If your drawings convinced the Governor to close down the Refuge, what about a daily political cartoon? To expose the dealings in our government's back rooms? What do you say, Teddy? Care to have this young man's artistry shine a light behind your closed doors?" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Pulitzer proposes as he looks between Jack and Roosevelt. Katherine wants him to take the job since he will have to stay in New York City longer, and maybe just maybe Jack would stay in Manhattan for good. She wants him to stay more than she wants him to take the job, but most of all, she just wants him to be happy with whatever he chooses. It would make her very sad if he let her, but she would rather him be happy with where he is than be stuck in a city he desperately wants to get out of. If he needs to go to Santa Fe to make a life for himself, then that is where he must go. "I can move on. It will all work out in the end, right? Even though I'm terrified of him leaving me for Santa Fe, I can move on," Katherine tells herself when deep down she knows that she will never truly lose her feelings for her impossible boy. Katherine walks over to Jack and says,
"Well don't just stand there, you've got a union to run. Besides, didn't someone just offer you a pretty cool job?" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies)
"What? Me woirk for ya fadder?" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) He responds.
"Well you already work for my father." (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies)
"Oh well. Hey, Gov, don't sweat it. Wid da strike settled, I should probably be hittin da road." (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Katherine sighs inwardly. He really is going to choose Santa Fe over the job, and most importantly her and the boys. Her heart breaks at the crushed looks of despair on the boys' faces. Davey comes up behind Jack with a frustrated look on his face.
"Don'tcha ever get tired of singing the same old tune. What's Santa Fe got that New York ain't? Tarantulas?" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Davey asks and shoots Jack a "You've got to be kidding me look". Jack rolls his eyes at Davey's question and turns away. The expression on Jack's face tells Katherine that Davey hit a chord inside his fellow strike leader. Katherine comes up with an even better question,
"Better yet, what's New York got that Santa Fe ain't?" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) She comes up to stand beside him and Jack looks over at her. Crutchy rises to put in his two cents.
"New York's got us and we're family." (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Katherine strolls closer to Jack and proclaims,
"And you got one more ace up your sleeve." (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) She decides that if Jack is going to leave, she is coming with him. No questions asked. This way, neither of them will have to worry too much about losing the other. Jack raises his eyebrows and asks,
"And what would dat be?" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Katherine smiles, tears shimmering in her eyes as she answers,
"Me. Wherever you go, I'll be right by your side." (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Katherine sees a sad smile spread across his face. She loves New York, but she loves Jack more and she wants to be wherever he wants to be. If it means leaving New York for Santa Fe, then she would do it in a heartbeat.
"For shoah?" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Jack asks softly and Katherine's face lights up and she answers back with an attempt at Jack's thick New York accent.
"For sure." (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Jack smiles and starts singing softly to her,
"Don't take much to be a dreamah, all ya do is close your eyes, But some made up woirld is all ya evah see. Now my eyes is finally open and my dreams dey'se average size. But, they don't much mattah, if you ain't with me." Katherine's heart swells as she realizes what Jack is telling her. Before she knows what is happening, Jack gently takes her face in his hands and kisses her. Katherine smiles as they kiss and the boys cheer in the background. They pull apart only when Davey asks
"Well Jack, are you in or are you out?" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Jack puts his hands up in mock surrender and Katherine laughs at his protest.
"Ey, I've been busy!" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) The boys smack him playfully and cheer him on. Jack runs over to the pay station and slaps a coin down forcefully. The boys all burst into cheers. Katherine nearly has tears of joy in her eyes. The boys all start singing and dancing in order to celebrate. Katherine stands with a bunch of the boys and the next thing she knows Jack's Newsie bag is over shoulder and he is cartwheeling and dancing with the rest of the boys. Katherine joins them, still wearing Jack's bag. Suddenly, Jack is pulling on her hand and she twirls into his arms. Jack leans in and gives her a quick peck on the lips as she spins by. Jack gives a little whoop after they kiss and then the boys sing loudly about being the Kings Of New York. Katherine and Jacck stop spinning and look into each other's eyes. Shortly after they break up, the boys cheer loudly and Jack yells to them
"Head ovah ta Jacobi's! I'll be dere in a few." Then he turns to Katherine,
"Ya can come to if you'se want," He invites. His hazel eyes plead her to come, but she has not had a decent night of rest in a couple of nights.
"I'd love to, but I'm beat. I haven't slept in a couple of days," She declines politely, "I'm sorry." Jack gives her kicked puppy dog eyes and starts whining,
"What? You'se don't wanna hang out wid your favorite Newsie?" He sticks out his bottom lip and Katherine laughs.
"Okay, I guess I could come for a few minutes, and then I'm going home and sleeping," She agrees. Jack grabs her hand and Katherine squeezes his hand. Katherine knows that whatever lies ahead, Jack will never leave her. He will want to be with her as often as he can. Jack Kelly is her impossible boy, and he will always be her impossible boy.
AN:/ Aww. I forgot how cute that chapter ending was. They won!!! Yay!!! Even though you probably knew they were going to. Oh well. I still think Jack and Katherine are cute. I mean, what Fansie doesn't? So, there's one more chapter to wrap this one up. I know the strike ends here, but I have one more surprise up my sleeve. Also, I am officially on Fall Break!! Tonight I will not be able to roleplay, but after that, I should be able to. Thank you to all who have stuck with this story so far. Maybe It's Worth A Shot may come out next week after this one is done. It all depends on whether or not I get the first chapter written. I am a little stuck with ideas. I want something more than the strike, so if you have some kind of idea about that, please suggest it and I will be happy to consider it and maybe even add it to my story. Also, if you didn't respond to the question I posted on my wall, please respond to it. It will help me decide on what to work on next. Thank you to those who already have. Please tell me what you think of this story and anything else really. I have loved releasing this as my first official story to the Wattpad Community. Thank you for all being supportive. I hope you have enjoyed this story so far!! Last chapter is next week and then I get to complete my first story!!! Yay!!! I'm pretty excited about that. Thanks again and see you around. Soon. Very soon. ;)
