Chapter 10 - Sneaking In and Sneaking Out
However, Jack never falls asleep. He remembers that he and Katherine have a plan. After what seems like a few minutes, Jack sneaks down off the roof and looks at the lodging house clock. Sighing, he realizes that Katherine will only have been home for two hours. He has to get her anyways and hopefully she will have gotten a little bit of sleep in between now and then. Sneaking out of the Lodging House, he runs through the dark to the Pulitzer mansion. Once he's there, he silently tiptoes up the fire escape, so as not to awaken Pulitzer or his family. Jack peeks in and sees no one. Sneaking around, he smiles as he sees one of Katherine's dresses flapping in the lazy breeze in front of a window. Jack spies some loose pebbles in the grass and picks them up. He gently tosses them up, so they hit Katherine's window. Katherine wakes up to an odd sound. A gentle tink. She rubs her eyes and gently sits up. "Why does it sound like it's coming from the window?" She thinks as she rolls over in her bed trying to get some more sleep. Suddenly, she hears it again. TINK! "Be rational, Katherine, you're just imagining things. You fell asleep in your clothes for pity's sake." Katherine thinks and closes her eyes. TINK! Her eyes fly wide open. "That was not part of my imagination. Someone is throwing something at my window." She reasons. Katherine gets out of bed, smooths her skirts and fixes her hair in front of the mirror. "Who wants me at this hour without anyone knowing that they want me? Oh no! What if it's the Delanceys? No, they would have broken in. What if it's Darcy and Bill saying they can't help with the strike? What if it's...?" Katherine stops midthought and whispers,
"Jack." She silently runs to the window and throws it open. There he is. His figure illuminated by the moonlight casting a ten foot version of himself across her lawn. Recalling the plan, she waves at him and he motions for her to come to him. Katherine shakes her head and she clearly sees Jack mouth to her,
"I'll catch ya, Ace." Katherine shakes her head and Jack gives her a sad look. She sighs, pushes her way past the dress, and points to where she wants Jack to catch her. He runs and she jumps. Jack catches her in his strong arms and carries her away from her home. Once they walk to the sidewalk, he sets her down. Jack grabs her hand and leads her in the direction of the World building. Suddenly, they hear the sounds of a man muttering about something as he washes a window. Katherine races to him and pushes Jack out of sight.
"Gary, may I have your keys? We need to bring Father down and I know he hasn't given you a raise in 20 years, but I will pay you some decent money if you help me now," She explains without breaking for breath. The janitor eagerly hands Katherine the keys and she looks at him and says "Do not tell my father about this." He nods his agreement and continues cleaning the windows as if nothing has happened. Katherine grabs Jack's hand and rushes to the underground door to the catwalk above the cellar. Jack silently drops down first making sure that no one is around. Katherine closes the door behind him to keep herself hidden for as long as possible. Suddenly, she hears Jack rap on the closed door and she flings it open to see his eyes excited with joy. Dropping down onto the catwalk next to him, she squeezes his hand excitedly. She hopes he stays in New York. Thinking about the prospect of him leaving makes her miss him terribly. More than she would ever admit to Jack. The two of them split up when they hear footsteps. David and Race climb down through the open door and head for Jack and Katherine.
"I'll get the lights and you get the windows unlocked," she instructs, tossing him the keys. Jack thumbs his way through them calling out,
"You have enough keys in here ta unlock da whole building. Has someone been pickin Daddy's pockets again?" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Katherine rolls her eyes at this impossible boy.
"The janitor hasn't had a raise in all 20 years he's worked here. He's with us 100%,"(Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) She explains as she flips the lights up. Jack lets out a low whistle as she does, taking in the size of the room and the giant printing press in front of him. He turns to Davy and asks,
"Ya bring da fellas?" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies)
"We could hold a hoe down in here and no one would be the wiser." (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies)
"Alright! Good job." (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Jack glances around looking for Katherine only to hear David say,
"It's good to have you back!" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies)
"Shut up," (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Jack replies with a shrug and a slight blush colors his cheeks. Katherine comes back in with two men who Jack assumes to be Bill and Darcy. A huge smile graces Katherine's face at the thought of giving her father a taste of his own cruel medicine. Katherine never contained much of a belief for revenge, but harming innocent Newsies seemed to cross all of her line. Especially now that she loved Jack Kelly whom her father hates. Quickly, she leads her two friends over to the printing press.
"Here it is, boys! Just think while my father sleeps in his bed, we will be using his own printing press to bring him down," (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) She explains excitedly. A wild look comes across her face at the very thought of it. Jack gestures to Katherine and remarks,
"Remind me to stay on your good side." (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Katherine playfully elbows him in the side.
"So dis is what dey print da papes on?" Race asks timidly. (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) One of the men behind Katherine speaks up,
"I can see why they don't use this old girl anymore, but she should be alright to do the job." (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Katherine gestures to the young man to introduce him to Jack,
"Jack, this is Darcy." She says and Jack swaggers over, spits in his hand, and offers it to Darcy. (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Darcy shoots him a disgusted look and Katherine can't help but let a small giggle escape. Jack's gestures must seem entirely foreign to Darcy, who's never been anywhere near someone like Jack. Quickly wiping his hand on his pant leg, Jack extends it to Darcy and mutters a quick apology. Darcy shakes his hand and marches over to the printing press to examine it. Jack and Katherine share a nervous look as he does. Katherine does not want to think about what could happen if they don't win the strike. Shaking her head at the thought of it, she pulls Bill forward and the two shake hands. "And this is Bill," She finishes. (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies)
"Proud to be a part of your revolution, sir!" Bills exclaims. (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Jack shakes his hand like it's broken and says,
"Ain't dat someting," he mutters softly. (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Katherine rolls her eyes. Kelly really is an impossible boy.
"As Les says, "can we table the palabra and get back to business?" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) She asks impatiently.
"Alright. Race, once we get the press going, you let the boys in and spread those banners to every working kid in New York," Davey instructs, "and after that." Race nods his blonde head in agreement. (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies)
"It's up ta dem," Jack says quietly as he nervously shakes his head. (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) He is hoping that this works for them. He wants to get out so bad and he cannot wait a second longer to take out his enemy. Adjusting his hat, a nervous habit of his, he throws himself into action with the rest of the boys. Bill and Darcy get the press running and Race lets the boys in.
AN:/ Ahhh, a slightly longer chapter. I love Katherine and how Jack helps her sneak away from her father. And I'm sure you all know what happens next. Things are getting good in the cellar of Pulitzer's building. Anyways, what did you guys think? I hope you enjoyed it. This one was also fun to write. Originally, I was going to stop at Something to Believe In, but then I decided against it. Please tell me what you think! I love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed the story! See you around, friends!
