Chapter 10

Damien POV-
We sat there for the rest of the day, watching over her. The nurse was nice enough to pop in to let us know when visiting hours were up. Sammy kissed Lillian's hand and said he would see her tomorrow.
Walking up to her, I looked down at her bruised face. I took in the split lip and bruised eye. The hand print around her neck and the bold spot in her hair.
Slowly, I leaned down and kissed her forehead, my lips lingering there. Standing up tall, I promised her something. Nothing bad would happen to her again. I'd make sure of it.
Turning away from her bed, I took Sammy's hand in my own and led him from the room. On our way out, the receptionist from before was stood there. I gave her a nod and silent thank you. She smiled back. Walking out the main doors, we walked slowly towards my car. Neither of us wanted to leave. Opening the car door for Sammy, I helped him into his seat, ensuring the belt was buckled securely.
Once in, I started the car and drove away. Looking back, we watched the hospital get smaller and smaller until it vanished from sight. Luckily, the hospital wasn't far away from home. It was late, I knew I had to get Sammy some food and put him to bed. Lately, he had been spending most his nights at mine.
The arguments and violence had gotten worse in the main house. I didn't know what else to do so I kept him with me. Safe.
Ahead of me, I saw our house. Pulling into the drive way, I pressed the button which opened the garage doors. Parking, I sat for a moment. "Wait here Sammy. I'll be back in a second." I told him as I climbed from the car and walked towards the connecting door. Opening it, I looked in and found nothing. I went back, picking up a tired looking Sammy and carried him through the house as he buried his face into my neck. His little button nose was freezing against my warm skin.
I had made it through to the kitchen before remembering to grab some food. Looking in the cupboards, I grabbed the past from the shelf, as well as the tomato mascarpone sauce. Looking in the fridge, I saw some chicken and chorizo. Holding the food and Sammy was a bit of a struggle as I opened the doors.
I walked the path from the main house to my own. Unlocking the door, I placed the food on the side in the kitchen, before putting Sammy on one of the chairs. I watched him yawn before I turned around. Getting out the required pots and pans, I filled one with water, salt and butter, before putting it on the stove to warm up a bit.
I sliced the chorizo and chicken into bite sized pieces, placing a little oil in a pan. Once again, heating it up. I put the pasta in the boiling water, then placed both the chicken and chorizo in the pan to cook. Standing there, I gave the meat a stir, not letting the chicken burn. After roughly five minutes, the pan was an orangey colour, as was the meat. The chorizo was nicely seared and the chicken was cooked all the way through. Checking on the pasta I saw it was almost ready. I left it for two more minutes before draining the water. Opening the jar, I put both the sauce and meat in with the pasta giving it a stir to warm through. Another five minutes and the food was pretty much ready. I grated cheese along the top before dishing it up. A knife and fork in front of us both.
We both ate our food in silence, our minds somewhere else. After our meal I took the bowls and put them in water to soak. "Alright mister. Time for bed. Go put your PJs on and get into bed. I'll be back in a minute to tuck you in." I said to Sammy. He got up, going to do as I asked. I left for the kitchen sink to wash up. After, I headed to my bed, seeing Sammy laying there, looking at me. Walking over, I sat on the bed and tucked the covers around him.
"Dame. We are going to see Lil tomorrow aren't we?" Sammy asked, looking at me with watery eyes. "Of course we are. We can get up a little earlier and see her before school, then I'll pick you up and we can go after. We can get her a present for when she wakes up. How does that sound?" I ask, waiting for a response. He smiled at me and nodded his head. Letting out a large yawn, he rolled over getting comfy. I blew up the mattress and gathered the extra pillows and cover.
Heading for the bathroom, I brushed my teeth and changed into boxers. I hated sleeping in clothes. Walking out, the light illuminated the room. As I was about to climb into bed, I heard a whisper from Sammy. "Dame, could you get me Toby?"
Walking over to the cupboard, I pulled out Toby, the stuffed bear and walked it over to Sammy. Tucking it in with him. "Goodnight monkey." I said to him. Climbing into the air bed, I was wondering whether I should just get another bed. I was pretty hand-sy, I could always build a small extension, a room for Sammy. I mean, he spent all his time here anyway. After a lot of thought, I decided that's what I would do.
I closed my eyes, waiting for sleep to come. It took hours. I couldn't stop thinking and remembering the state Lillian was in. I knew I had to help her. If mum wouldn't get help at least I could help someone else. With that promise, I drifted off to sleep. My dreams of the perfect room for Sammy. Maybe even Lillian.
