Chapter One
It was 10 Pm. That meant closing time for Becca. She worked at the town drug store after school. She had gotten the job because her parents owned it. She was a pretty popular girl. A lot of the guys seemed to want her, and the girls seemed to want to be her or even with her. She was a senior on her last week of school. Meanwhile, she had been working the last 4 years here as a part-time employee. All to save up for a summer road trip. At the start of her savings, she only knew a couple of girls who would be going with her. Samantha and Christina. She had been friends with them for years. Longer than she could remember. But now, there were even more people going. Trish, the new girl, who just moved here this year. Along with her boyfriend Steve. Samantha’s boyfriend Jerry. Christina’s Brother Sean and also her boyfriend Frank.
Sean was a year older than everyone. He was back from college for the summer and had always had a thing for Becca. So when he heard about the trip, he offered up his RV for them all to use. He was a fairly built man. He used to play basketball but never got a scholarship for it. He was going to school for arts now. Another one of his passions. His family wanted him to stay here and go to the community college so he could one day run the family car dealership. That was not what he wanted, though. He had wanted to open up an art studio in New York.
Becca was locking up and about to head to her car when the shop phone rang. She almost didn’t answer it but changed her mind. It could have been her mom or dad wanting her to do something. So, she ran to the phone.
“Hello, Becca Speaking.” She said.
But on the other line, there was just silence.
“Hello? Is there anyone there?” She asked.
Still nothing.
“Christina, if this is you, it’s not funny. I am hanging up now. Bye.” She said angrily while slamming the phone down on the cradle. Christina was a prankster, after all. Always loving to scare people.
Becca decided to call her on her cell phone. Christina picked up on the second ring. “That was not funny.” Becca scolded.
Christina was a little confused on the matter, “What are you talking about?” She asked.
“Calling the store and not talking at all.” Becca replied.
“Girl, I am with Frank out at the Diner. I haven’t called anyone.” She stated.
“Yeah. Okay, then someone just called me. I am freaking out a little.” Becca said.
“It was probably the wrong number or a pocket dial. I wouldn’t worry too much about it if I were you, Bec.” Christina said.
“Okay, if you say so. Well, I am about to head home. Enjoy your night. I’ll talk to you later. Bye” Becca said.
“Bye.” Christina replied.
At the diner, Christina was enjoying the milkshake Frank had bought her. She always thought of doing the double straw thing with him, but really didn’t want to share any of it with him.
“Babe, what was that about?” Frank asked. Frank was a tall, scruffy guy. Shaggy blonde hair with some facial hair to pull off his lumber jack look he had always had. Wearing plaid shirts pretty much his whole life with jeans and work boots. That is when he wasn’t playing football. He was the captain of the team. He had a scholarship to Texas because of it.
“Oh, what?” Christina asked. As she was lost in her head. She was thinking of Frank, herself, and what they would do after the summer. Because she was going to be going to school in Oklahoma. She really wanted to go to school with him, but she had gotten accepted to Oklahoma on a full ride. Off of her grades alone. She was a smart girl who liked to have fun and mischief every once in a while. She was even the one in charge of the senior prank this year as well.
“On the phone. Who called you? You looked a little flustered.” He asked.
“Oh, it was Becca. She said someone called the shop and didn’t say anything. She thought it was me pulling a prank on her.” She answered. Really, though, she didn’t put much thought into it. As that had happened a bunch to her and come to find out, it was just a butt dial.
“Okay, well, are you ready to go? I gotta get you home and get up early tomorrow for school. They want me there early for something about football or something.” He said.
“Really? Why didn’t you tell me about this?” She asked.
“I thought you knew.” He replied.
“No, but okay, let's go. I gotta get home and finish up the plans for the prank anyway." She reminded him.
The ride back wasn’t that long. She only lived five minutes from the diner. Even with those obligations, she really wanted to spend every second with him. She was so worried they would go their own ways after the summer and never see each other again. They had been dating pretty much all of high school.
When he pulled up to her house, he had gotten out of the truck to open her door. When he opened her door, she seemed lost in thought again.
“Christina, we are here. Are you okay?” He asked.
“Oh, yeah. My bad. I was just thinking.” She answered. Really, though, she had been getting lost in her thoughts a lot lately. It was starting to freak her out somewhat. She had no idea why she just blanked out so often now.
As he walked her to the porch. He stopped her, spun her into his arms, and kissed her gently, telling her that he loved her and they would always be together no matter what.
Christina liked the thought of that but found it odd. Like he knew what she was thinking about or something. Did she say something out loud without noticing? She wondered that to herself but didn't believe anything had slipped.
Becca was pulling into her driveway when she noticed lights pull in behind her. She was a little nervous already tonight, so she had stayed in her car until she could see who it was. Trish’s car. She wasn’t expecting Trish to come over or anything. Trish wasn’t like the rest of her friends. Trish didn’t dress the typical way around here. She was a city girl, after all. Till this last year when her parents had gotten separated. She moved here with her mother because her mother had family here. She was a likable girl, though. Just a bit more free spirited. She had plugs and snake bites. She liked metal music while everyone else in this town didn’t really care for it. At first, everyone seemed to look at her strangely until they had gotten to know her. She had black hair with red highlights currently. The highlights usually were different colors. She had an average height and size, and she had glasses on tonight. She normally had contacts in.
“Becca, hey girl, I got my share of the money for the trip put together now. Are we going to be getting any hotel rooms or anything? Or are we just going to stay in the RV?” Trish asked.
“I figured we would just see what happened, but I would like to get a few rooms here and there. I feel like staying in the RV with everyone all summer may drive us crazy.” She answered. Becca was feeling a bit drowsy all of a sudden. She wasn’t tired when she was driving and it was only 10:30 pm.
“Oh, okay. I was just checking on you on my way home. I saw you pulling into your driveway.” Trish said. Trish had just gotten off work as well, and they lived down the street from each other. She figured she’d drop by and figure out the plan. She was really excited about this trip because she would be able to go to a few concerts. Or so she hoped. She hadn’t gone to a concert this whole year and was really looking forward to it.
“I’m going to head home. You look tired, Bec” Trish said.
“Alright, Night Trish. Are you gonna ride with me to school tomorrow?” She asked
“Yeah, we can do that, Steve’s got to go in early tomorrow for something with the football team.” She answered
As Trish was driving out of her driveway, Becca headed into her home. Her parents weren’t there tonight. They had gone to the next town over to a Rodeo. They probably wouldn't be home for another few hours, she thought.
She decided she would get a glass of milk to drink before heading upstairs to bed. She flipped on the TV. It was on the news. She was about to turn the channel when she heard. “Body discovered tonight off of Old Highway 44. No name has been released yet, but it seems to be a high school girl. More Details when we get them” Jesus, She thought, this will be all over the school tomorrow. She was shaken with the news. She knew she had to go to bed. It was her last week of school, after all. Not to mention, she was the student president. Therefore, she had to set the example for everyone and sort the plans for graduation. She turned off the TV and headed upstairs to bed.
