I watch as she leaves. I run after her. I find her behind the school crying. There are tears streaming down her face. "I'm sorry, Josh. It isn't going to work out," she sobs. I look away and say, "Ok. Do you want a ride home?" "No," she says. "I'll walk." I sigh, shrug my shoulders, and walk away.

It's a few months later, and Shay and I have barely talked. I'm in class, and they're handing out yearbooks. I open mine to a random page and see the picture of Shay and I. Something in my head snaps. Ask her out for real, asshat, says Harold, the voice in my head. "Good idea," I mumble. I notice Jakey in the seat next to me lean over to my seat and smile at the picture. "You guys were cute," he says, slightly sad. "Thanks, I guess. You and Violet are, too." Violet was the girl I'd seen him with at the dance. They've been dating ever since. He's happier now than ever.
