The Time of Angels - Two

Everyone climbed down the ladder and into the dark, damp entrance that was only lit by the torches and small amount of light coming through from the top of the ladder. "Do we have a gravity globe?" The Doctor asked turning his torch on.

"Grav globe." Octavian ordered. A soldier then handed the unlit globe to the Time Lord.

"Where are we?" Amy frowned turning her torch on and looking around the entrance. "What is this?"

"It's an Aplan Mortarium, sometimes called a Maze of the Dead." River informed.

"Lovely name." The Stone commented.

"What's that?" Amy questioned.

"Well, if you happen to be a creature of living stone..." he then kicked the globe which lit up and hovered in the air lighting up a large array of broken statues. "The perfect hiding place." He finished.

"Nice kick sweetheart." The Stone chuckled making him beam.

"I guess this makes it a bit trickier." Octavian said eyeing the area.

"A bit, yeah." The Doctor nodded.

"A stone Angel on the loose amongst stone statues. A lot harder than I'd prayed for."

"A needle in a haystack." River hummed.

"A needle that looks like hay. A hay-like needle of death. A hay-alike needle of death in a haystack of, er, statues." The Doctor said then noticed the pointed look the Stone was giving him. "No, yours was fine."

"Right." Octavian slowly nodded then turned to his men. "Check every single statue in this chamber. You know what you're looking for. Complete visual inspection. One question." He looked between the Time Lords. "How do we fight it?"

"We find it, and hope." He muttered then walked away with the Stone.

River went to follow with the others but came to a hault when Octavian stopped her whispering to the woman. "They don't know yet, do they? Who and what you are."

"It's too early in their time stream."

"Well, make sure they don't work it out, or they're not going to help us."

"She seems to trust me more than he does. As long as she doesn't work it out then we will be fine. I won't let you down. Believe you me, I have no intention of going back to prison."

---------------------------------------------------------------

"You all right?" River eyed Amy who rubbed her eye.

"Yeah, I'm fine." She shrugged it off not seeing the dusk slip between her fingers. "So, what's a Maze of the Dead?"

"Oh, it's not as bad as it sounds." River shrugged. "It's just a labyrinth with dead people buried in the walls. Okay, that was fairly bad. Right give me your arm." She reached out. "This won't hurt a bit." River then injected the redhead who yelped pulling her arm back and frowning at the woman. "There, you see. I lied. It's a viro-stabiliser." She announced. "Stabilises your metabolism against radiation, drive burn, anything. You're going to need it when we get up to that ship."

"So what are they like?" Amy asked nodding at te Time Lords busy a couple of feet away. "In the future, I mean." She corrected. "Because you know them in the future, don't you?"

"The Doctor and the Stone?" River raised a brow. "Well, the Doctor's the Doctor and the Stone's the Stone."

"Oh. Well, that's very helpful." Amy laughed. "Mind if I write that down?"

"Yes, we are." River nodded looking at the Doctor and the Stone who both looked up for a moment.

"Sorry, what?" The Doctor frowned.

"Talking about you."

"I wasn't listening." The Doctor shrugged. "I'm busy."

"Ah. The other way up." She smirked at the device in the Doctors hands. The Stone slowly shook her head and flipped the device up the other way while.

"Yeah." He slowly nodded.

"You're related to her." Amy whispered remembering what the curly blonde said to the other blonde earlier while watching the Stone who looked up for a moment, frowned at the rocky wall then looked back at the device in the Doctors hands.

"Oh, Amy, Amy, Amy." River laughed. "This is the Stone we're talking about." She slowly shook her head. "Do you really think it could be anything that simple?"

"Yep." Amy nodded.

"You're good." River grinned at Amy. "I'm not saying you're right, but you are very good." She nodded looking amused.

---------------------------------------------------------------

The Time Lords, Amy and River hear gunfire from where they were looking at the small device, the Doctor grabbed the Stones hand and they both ran back to see a young cleric has shot a statue. "Sorry, sorry." He shakily apologised. "I thought.... I thought it looked at me."

"We know what the Angel looks like." Octavian said in a slightly harsh tone. "Is that the Angel?"

"No, sir."

"No, sir, it is not. According to the Doctor and the Stone, we are facing an enemy of unknowable power and infinite evil, so it would be good, it would be very good, if we could all remain calm in the presence of decor."

"What's your name?" The Stone raised a brow.

"Bob, ma'am."

"Ah, that's a great name. I love the name Bob." I grinned.

"It's a Sacred Name." Octavian cut in. "We all have Sacred Names. They're given to us in the service of the Church."

"Sacred Bob." The Stone hummed. "I would say more like Scared Bob now, eh?"

"Yes, ma'am." He quickly nodded.

"Ah, good. Scared keeps you on your toes. Very fast." She nodded. "Anyone in this room who isn't scared is stupid." She informed slightly glaring at Octavian. "Carry on."

"Well then." The Doctor whispered to her. "You set him in his place."

"Well he was practically walking all over the poor man telling him to not be scared." She replied glancing up at him.

The Doctor grinned at her kissing the Stones cheek.

"We'll be moving into the maze in two minutes. You stay with Christian and Angelo." Octavian informed Bob. "Guard the approach."

---------------------------------------------------------------

"Isn't there a chance this lot's just going to collapse?" Amy asked eyeing the roof of the maze area. "There's a whole ship up there."

"Incredible builders, the Aplans." River nodded.

"Had dinner with their Chief Architect once." The Doctor nodded. "Two heads are better than one."

"What, you mean you helped him?" Amy asked.

"No, he means had two heads." The Stone explained shaking her head.

"That book, the very end, what did it say?" The Doctor asked River.

"Hang on."

"Read it to us." He ordered.

"What if we had ideas that could think for themselves? What if one day our dreams no longer needed us?" She read. "When these things occur and are held to be true, the time will be upon us. The time of Angels."

---------------------------------------------------------------

"Are we there yet?" Amy groaned. "It's a hell of a climb."

"The Maze is on six levels, representing the ascent of the soul." River explained. "Only two levels to go."

"Lovely species, the Aplans. We should visit them some time." The Doctor hummed. The Stone rolled her eyes at him.

"I thought they were all dead?" Amy frowned.

"So is Virginia Woolf." The Stone said. The Doctors on her bowling team." She informed.

"Very relaxed, sort of cheerful. Well, that's having two heads, of course. You're never short of a snog with an extra head."

"You had to say that didn't you." The Stone rolled her eyes.

"You were thinking it too." He grinned at her.

"Oh, hush."

"Yes dear."

"Doctor, Stone, there's something..." River frowned looking around at the statues. "I don't know what it is."

"Yeah, there's something wrong." The Doctor frowned. "Don't know what it is yet, dear?" He looked at the Time Lady beside him.

"Working on it." She frowned in thought. "Speaking about the Aplans they started having laws against self-marrying."

"Yeah what was that about?" The Doctor nodded at her. "But that's the Church for you. Er, no offence, Bishop."

"Quite a lot taken, if that's all right, Doctor, Stone. Lowest point in the wreckage is only about fifty feet up from here. That way."

"The Church had a point, if you think about it." River told them. "The divorces must have been messy."

"Oh." The Doctor blinked.

"Oh dear..." the Stone breathed stepping closer to the Doctor.

"What's wrong?" Amy looked between them in alarm.

"Oh." Rivers eyes widened realising what they had noticed.

"Exactly." The Doctor muttered taking the Stones hand in his tightly squeezing.

"How could we have not noticed that?" River asked them.

"Low level perception filter" the Stone replied.

"Or maybe we're thick." The Doctor cut in. "But knowing the Stone it's the first guess." He flashed her a quick smile then looked back at the statues.

"What's wrong, sir, ma'am?" Octavian looked at them both.

"Nobody move." The Doctor ordered after Octavian went towards them. "Nobody move. Everyone stay exactly where they are. Bishop, I am truly sorry. I've- we've made a mistake," he corrected as the Stone squeezed his hand tighter. "And we are all in terrible danger."

"What danger?"

"The Aplans." River answered.

"The Aplans?" Octavian asked frowning not understanding what the issue was.

"They've got two heads." River said.

"Yes, I get that. So?"

"So why don't the statues?" He questioned then pointed the torch closer to them both letting the light shine in a clear empty spot. "Everyone, over there. Just move. Don't ask questions, don't speak." He ordered tightly holding the Stones hand.

"Okay, I want you all to switch off your torches."

"Sir?" One of the soldiers questioned.

"Just do it." The Stone ordered glancing at the Doctor for a moment who gave her a nod before she turned hers off, only leaving the Doctors torch shining at the statues. "Okay. I'm going to turn off this one too, just for a moment." He explained.

"Are you sure about this?"

The Doctor swallowed squeezing the Stones hand as she squeezed back giving him support. "No." He switched it off then instantly flicked it back on. The group all stepped back seeing the statues staring right at them.

"Oh, my God." Amy gasped. "They've moved."

The Doctor and the Stone ran down a passage shining their lights at the statues nearby as the others followed not far behind doing the same.

"They're Angels." The Doctor said seeing one on the floor reaching out to the Time Lords. "All of them."

"But they can't be." River breathed.

"Clerics, keep watching them." The Doctor ordered before running back to a vantage point of the main cavern with the Stone.

"Every statue in this Maze, every single one, is a Weeping Angel." The Stone muttered. "They're coming after us."

---------------------------------------------------------------

"But there was only one Angel on the ship." River said to the Time Lords. "Just the one, I swear."

"Could they have been here already?" Amy suggested.

"The Aplans. What happened?" The Doctor asked. "How did they die out?"

"Nobody knows." River said before her eyes widened at the Stones words. "We know."

"They don't look like Angels." Octavian said eyeing one of them.

"And they're not fast." Amy added frowing at the Doctor and the Stone. "You said they were fast. They should have had us by now."

"Look at them." The Doctor nodded at one. "They're dying, losing their form. They must have been down here for centuries, starving."

"Losing their image?" Amy guessed.

"And their image is their power." The Stone muttered frowning, glancing at the Doctor who looked at her doing the same. "Power." They both muttered again their eyes then widening as they shouted in unison. "Power!"

"Doctor, Stone?"

"Don't you see?" The Doctor asked. "All that radiation spilling out the drive burn. The crash of the Byzantium wasn't an accident, it was a rescue mission for the Angels. We're in the middle of an army, and it's waking up."

"We need to get out of here fast." River said.

Octavian spoke into his comm calling for the other soldiers. "Bob, Angelo, Christian, come in, please. Any of you, come in."

"It's Bob, sir." The man called in a calm voice making the Stones brows crease in confusion, remembering how scared he was before. "Sorry, sir."

"Bob, are Angelo and Christian with you?" Octavian asked. "All the statues are active. I repeat, all the statues are active."

"I know, sir. Angelo and Christian are dead, sir." Bob replied. "The statues killed them, sir."

The Doctor grabbed the mans walkie talkie speaking into it. "Bob, Sacred Bob, it's me, the Doctor."

"I'm talking to-"

"Where are you now?" The Doctor asked cutting Octavian off.

"I'm talking to my-"

"Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, shut up." The Doctor said to him then turned back to the walkie talkie.

"I'm on my way up to you, sir. I'm homing in on your signal."

"Ah, well done, Bob. Scared keeps you fast. Told you, my wife didn't she tell you?" He grinned at the Time Lady before looking serious once more. "Your friends, Bob. What did the Angel do to them?"

"Snapped their necks, sir."

"That's odd." The Stone frowned looking at the Doctor leaning in to talk in the walkie talkie. "That's not how the Angels kill you. They displace you in time. Unless they needed the bodies for something..."

Octavian snached the walkie talkie off the Doctor. "Bob, did you check their data packs for vital signs? We may be able to initiate a rescue plan."

"Oh, don't be an idiot." The Doctor snapped grabbing it back. "The Angels don't leave you alive. Bob, keep running. But tell me, how did you escape?"

"I didn't escape, sir. The Angel killed me, too."

"What do you mean, the Angel killed you?" He questioned frowning.

"Snapped my neck, sir. Wasn't as painless as I expected, but it was pretty quick, so that was something."

"If you're dead, how can we be talking to you?" The Stone asked.

"You're not talking to me, ma'am The Angel has no voice. It stripped my cerebral cortex from my body and re-animated a version of my consciousness to communicate with you. Sorry about the confusion."

"So when you say you're on your way up to us..." the Doctor muttered.

"It's the Angel that's coming, sir, yes." Angel bob cut in. "No way out."

"Then we get out through the wreckage. Go! Go, go, go. All of you run." Octavian shouted.

"Doctor, Stone." Amy called.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah, we're coming. Just go." He ordered. "Go, go, go. Yeah. Called you an idiot. Sorry, but there's no way we could have rescued your men." He apologised to Octavian.

"I know that, sir. And when you and your wife have flown away in your little blue box all safe and sound together, I'll explain that to their families." He replied then headed off. The Stone swallowed thickly feeling a pang of guilt in her stomach. He was right, when had they ever personally apologised to family for deaths they failed to save? They never did, the Stone could honestly not remember a day.

"Angel Bob." The Doctor said after staring at where Octavian stood before running off. "Which Angel am I talking to?" He asked. "The one from the ship?"

"Yes, sir. And the other Angels are still restoring."

"Ah, so the Angel is not in the wreckage." The Stone nodded. "Thank you." she then pocketed the walkie talkie after taking it from the Doctor then ran with him stopping after seeing Amy.

"Don't wait for us." He ordered. "Go, run."

"I can't." She said. "No, really, I can't."

"Why not?" The Stone frowned.

"Look at it." She said in panic and fear. "Look at my hand. It's stone." She nodded down at it. The Time Lords did as she said and frowned seeing her hand perfectly fine. Her eyes then widened.

"You looked into the eyes of an Angel, didn't you?"

"I couldn't stop myself." She nodded shaking. "I tried."

"Listen to me." The Doctor said grabbing her shoulders. "It's messing with your head. Your hand is not made of stone."

"It is." She said. "Look at it."

"It's in your mind, I promise you. You can move that hand. You can let go."

"I can't, okay? I've tried and I can't. It's stone."

"The Angel is going to come and it's going to turn this light off, and then there's nothing we can do to stop it, so do it. Concentrate. Move your hand." The Doctor ordered.

"I can't."

"Then we're both going to die, Stone go." He ordered turning to her.

"No way am I leaving you." She said grabbing his hand placing her other on Amy's shoulder.

"You're not going to die." Amy shook her head at them.

"They'll kill the lights."

"You've got to go. You know you have." She shook her head looking at the Stone. "You've got all that stuff with River and that's all got to happen. You know you can't die here."

"Time can be re-written." The Stone answered. "It doesn't work like that." The Time Ladys eyes widened seeing the statue.

"Keep your eyes on it." The Doctor ordered Amy. "Don't blink."

"Run!" She shouted.

"You see, we're not going. We're not leaving you here." The Stone replied.

"I don't need you two to die for me, Doctor, Stone do I look that clingy?" She looked at them.

"To see the universe everyone is that clingy." The Stone muttered her eyes on the statue. But Amelia you can move your hand." She said.

"It's stone."

"It's not stone." She countered.

"You've got to go. Those people up there will die without you two. If you stay here with me, you'll have as good as killed them."

"Amelia Pond, you are magnificent, and I'm sorry." The Stone apologised.

"It's okay. I understand." Amy nodded. "You've got to leave me."

"Oh, no, we're not leaving you, never." The Stone chuckled. "I'm sorry about this." She said wincing a little before quickly biting her hand.

"Ow!" Amy cried out in pain pulling back her hand.

"See? Not stone, I know what Stone lookes like, I am the Stone after all." She winked

"Not the time dear." The Doctor whispered to her. "Now run." He ordered Amy.

"You bit me." Amy gaped at the Time Lady.

"Yeah, and you're alive." She retorted.

"Look, I've got a mark." She showed the Doctor what his wife had done. "Look at my hand."

"Yes, and you're alive." He reminded. "Good idea, dear." He grinned at her.

"You're okay with this?!" She gaped at him. "Also blimey, your teeth. Have you got space teeth?" She looked at the Stone.

"Time Lords." She reminded. "Also alive."

"Yeah. All she's saying." The Doctor reminded dragging Amy away while tightly gripping the Stones hand with the other.

---------------------------------------------------------------

"The statues are advancing along all corridors." One of the men informed Octavian. "And, sir, my torch keeps flickering."

"They all do." He grimly nodded.

"So does the gravity globe." Rover added.

"Clerics, we're down to four men." Octavian informed. "Expect incoming."

"Yeah, it's the Angels. They're coming." The Doctor said. "And they're draining the power for themselves."

"Which means we won't be able to see them."

"Which means we can't stay here." The Stone nodded in agreement with Octavian.

"Two more incoming." He informed watching his back.

"Any suggestions?" River asked.

"The statues are advancing on all sides." He said shining his light on the directions. "We don't have the climbing equipment to reach the Byzantium."

"There's no way up, no way back, no way out." Rover said looking at the Time Lords. "No pressure, but this is usually when you two have a really good idea."

"Normally the Stone says something and that starts my brain up, gives me a kick in the right direction otherwise I think of everything at once."

"There's always a way out." The Stone muttered her eyes meeting the Doctors. "Sweetheart are you thinking what I'm thinking?"

"Well that depends what you are thinking dear." He smirked.

TheSctone opened her mouth to reply only to bring the walkie talkie from before back out hearing Angel Bob through it. "Stone? Can I speak to the Stone, please?"

"Hello, Angels." The Stone faked a cheery voice. "What's your problem?"

"Your power will not last much longer, and the Angels will be with you shortly. Sorry, ma'am."

"Why are you telling me this?" She frowned.

"There's something the Angels are very keen you should know before the end."

"Which is?" She raised a brow.

"I died in fear." He replied making her hearts sink.

"I'm sorry?" She asked wanting the angels to go on in a further explanation.

"You told me my fear would keep me alive, but I died afraid, in pain and alone. You made me trust you, and when it mattered, you let me down."

"What are they doing?" Amy asked.

"They're trying to make her angry, that's definitely going to make him angry, however." She nodded at the Doctor who looked quite furious before he forced himself to calm down for his wifes sake.

"I'm sorry, ma'am. The Angels were very keen for you to know that."

The Stone scoffed pinching the bridge of her nose. "By the look on my husbands face it seems he wants a word with you Angel Bob." She calmly replied handing thewalkie talkie to the Doctor.

"Hello." He spoke into it. "This is the Doctor and well the Angels have made their second amd third mistake because I'm not going to let that or this pass. You just tried to anger my wife, either you are very, very stupid in thinking that was a clever idea which will worsen her or you are brave, now I think it is the first gues. And I'm sorry you're dead, Bob, but I swear to whatever is left of you, they will be sorrier."

"But you're trapped, sir, and about to die."

"Yeah. I'm trapped." He replied. "And you know what? Speaking of traps, this trap has got a great big mistake in it. A great big, whopping mistake."

"What mistake, sir?"

"Dear?" He looked at her.

"Gravity globe." She replied taking his spare hand.

"Brilliant." He grinned kissing her cheek then looked at Amy. "Trust us."

"Yeah."

"Trust us?"

"Always." River grinned back after glancing at the Stone.

"You lot, trust us?" He asked Octavian.

"Sir, two more incoming." A man informed.

Octavian looked back at the men for a moment before nodded. "We have faith, sir."

"Then give me your gun. I'm about to do something incredibly stupid and dangerous-"

"Ehem." The Stone gave him a pointed look.

"A clever brilliant plant thought up by my stunning wife." He nodded at her. "Better?"

"Yes, sweetheart." She softly smiled.

"Good, now when I do the incredibly stupid and dangerous thing, jump!" He ordered deminstrating himself by jumping as high as he could.

"Jump where?" Octavian frowned.

"Just jump, high as you can." The Stone replied

"Come on, leap of faith, Bishop." The Doctor said taking the gun. "On my signal."

"What signal?" Octavian cut in.

"You won't miss it." The Doctor reassured.

"Sorry, can I ask again?" Angel Bob cut in. "You mentioned a mistake we made."

"Oh, big mistake. Huge." The Doctor said pointing his gun at the gravity globe. "Didn't anyone every tell you there's two things you never put in a trap?" He said meeting the Stones eyes for a moment. "If you're smart, if you value your continued existence, if you have any plans about seeing tomorrow, there is two things you never, ever put in a trap."

"And what would that be, sir?"

"Us." The Time Lords said in unison before the Doctor fired.
