The Hungry Earth

"Behold..." The Doctor stood by the TARDIS doors Amy eagerly waiting for him to open them. "Rio!" He threw to doors open... only to see the TARDIS had materialised in a graveyard.

"Why do I even bother." The Stone muttered stepping out and sniffing the air. "Yeah, I don't even know anymore." She shook her head licking her finger and then stuck it in the air frowning slightly, she knew something felt... odd but couldn't put her finger on it. "Strange..."

"Nah," Amy replied ignoring the blondes rambling to herself.

"Not really getting the sunshine carnival vibe," Rory added frowning while the Doctor walked over standing beside the Stone who was on her hands and knees ear pressed against the ground.

"No? Ooo, feel that, though." He muttered. "What's that?" He then started to make small jumps in the air the Stone picking up a tiny piece of gravel and rolling it between her finger frowning then standing up tossing the gravel behind her.

"The ground feels strange." The Stone nodded at him. "Just us. Wait." He held up a hand frowning. "That's weird."

"What's weird?" Rory asked seeing the Time Lords dart over to the grass around the church the TARDIS was beside, staring at... blue grass.

"Doctor, stop trying to distract us." Amy crossed her arms. "At least the Stones being quiet about it. We're in the wrong place. Doctor, it's freezing and I've dressed for Rio." She protested looking down at herself, wearing her short shorts and short sleeved t-shirt. "We are not stopping here. Doctor. You listening to me?" She huffed. "It's a graveyard. You promised me a beach."

"He promised me a beach actually." The Stone grinned. "He promised you, Rio." She pointed at the redhead with her sonic before turning to the grass the Doctor was picking at. "But... Blue grass." She flashed her sonic at it. "There are patches of it all around the graveyard."

"So, Earth, 2020-ish, ten years in your future, wrong continent for Rio, I'll admit, but it's not a massive overshoot." The Doctor shrugged.

"At least you got the correct planet sweetheart." She teasingly grinned at him.

"Stone." The Doctor winced dragging out her name, knowing exactly what she was going on about. "Will you ever drop that?"

"What happened?" Rory asked.

"He." She pointed her sonic at the Doctor. "Thought it was a good idea to try and fly the TARDIS blindfolded.

"Why did he do that?" Amy frowned.

"Because the Rani said she saw the Master doing it one time and he wanted to prove he was better than a beard wearing Time Lord." She fondly rolled her eyes. "Honestly you would think that they were both younger than me. I can understand the Master trying to do that but you Doctor?" She tutted swirling her sonic between her fingers seemingly enjoying the pout on his face and the look Amy and Rory were giving him, obviously trying not to laugh. "You should have known better than that to fall into one of his tricks, after he said we were going to Earth for a bit we ended up in my parent's bedroom while they were asleep, startling them both awake." She narrowed her eyes at the Doctor. "They lectured me for five hours! And he got two! All because I'm a 'Time Lady' and I should be responsible, setting an example. I was 463 years old. I was old enough to not be lectured by them because of someone's else's silly idea."

"I'm sorry dear."

"You say that every time." The Stone said her voice and gaze softening.

"That's because I am sorry." He gently kissed her cheek. "It was my fault that happened."

"Well it was actually the Masters fault but since you have taken the blame..."

"No way." He laughed wrapping his arms around her stopping her from moving. "Say it's not my fault."

"Never." She protested.

"Fine, then I will have to make you say it by force." He smirked starting to nuzzle her neck with his nose.

"No!" She cried out in laughter wriggling around in his arms. "No! Please!" She breathed out in squeals.

"Say it."

"Not... your... fault..." she breathed out trying not to laugh.

"There." He grinned pecking her lips. "That wasn't so hard."

"You... are... evil." She panted trying to control her breathing.

"Are you two going to do this all day?" Amy asked shrivelling her nose at them.

"Do what?" The Doctor frowned.

"Flirting..." she replied. "You're both nine hundred and seven..." she said remembering their age. "You're too old for flirting."

"Never too old." The Doctor sniffed then frowned looking at two small figures far away waving at the three.

"Why are those people waving at us?" Amy questioned wondering.

"Can't be." He muttered frowning further.

Rory slowly waved back while Amy hit his hand down whispering in the man's ear. "Don't."

The Doctor frowned using a pair of binoculars in his pocket to look at the two figures. "It is." He said handing them to the Stone who looked through before giving them back to the Doctor.

"It's you two." She looked at the companions.

"No, we're here." Rory pointed to the ground to emphasise his point. "How can we be up there?"

"Ten years in your future. Come to relive past glories, I'd imagine."

"Humans." The Stone fondly smiled. "You lot are so nostalgic."

"We're still together in ten years?" Amy said shrivelling her nose.

"No need to sound so surprised." Rory rolled his eyes at the redhead. The Stone smiled proudly, Rory came to her asking about how to not feel so shy around Amy and all that female stuff, of course it was hard for the Stone to answer because she is a Time Lady, Amy is a human but she helped as much as she could and it seemed to be paying off.

"Hey, let's go and talk to them," Amy suggested grinning. "We can say hi to future us. How cool is that?"

"Er, no, best not." The Doctor shot it down. "Really best not."

"These things get complicated very quickly, even more, complicated when it involves us..." The Stone pursed her lips gesturing to herself and the Doctor who slightly nodded in agreement. They both did almost blow up the TARDIS when there were two Doctors from two points at the same place, even if they weren't with companions... best not.

"Oh look." The Doctor grinned. "Big mining thing. Oh, I love a big mining thing. See, way better than Rio." He laughed. "Rio doesn't have a big mining thing."

"Sweetheart I think the word you are looking for is a..." She trailed off seeing him begin to pout. "Okay for once it's a 'big mining thing' she smiled.

"Great." he grinned linking his arm with hers.

"We're not going to have a look, are we?" Amy asked seeing them about to leave.

"Let's go and have a look!" He broke out into a wider grin. "Come on, you two, let's see what they're doing!" He unlinked his arm and sped off like a small child totally ignoring the Time Lady who was standing next to him fondly shaking her head watching him run off.

"If he can't get us to Rio, how's he ever going to get us back home?" Rory asked.

"You two always have me." The Stone grinned at them. "I'm not twelve months off, unlike him, I double check the dates."

"Ah well, we're lucky to have you then Stone." Amy nodded. "But Rory, did you not see over there?" She questioned. "It all works out fine."

"After everything we've seen, we just drop back into our old lives?" He raised a brow while the Time Lady watched the future Amy and Rory walk off. "The nurse and the kissogram?"

"The Doctor and I knew 'the pig and the showgirl' once." The Stone called over her shoulder. "Never did find out if those two worked out... might have to pay them a visit one day..."

"Shouldn't you go after him?" Rory looked at the Time Lady.

"At times he's like a lost puppy running around, it's adorable, running around like it's Christmas but he can't get into much trouble on his own in five minutes, then again he did manage to almost blow up an entire flat by trying to cook chicken one time..." She trailed off from her rambling.

"Hang on," Rory spoke over the Time lady holding Amy's hand up showing her Engagement ring. "What are you doing with that?"

"Engagement ring. I thought you liked me wearing it." Amy smiled.

"Amy, you could lose it," Rory warned. "Cost a lot of... money, that..."

"Point two: Don't tell her not to wear it because it cost a lot of money if the Doctor did that I would hit him round the head so hard he would have to go into a healing coma to get better."

"Points?" Amy frowned.

"Ah... I wonder where the Doctor is." The Time Lady frowned trying to distract the redhead.

Rory looked at Amy raising his brows. "Hmm. Spoilsport." She pouted taking the ring off and giving it to Rory.

"Go on. I'll catch you three up." Rory said.

"Wait a moment." The Stone raised a finger. "Last time the Doctor and I let someone in the TARDIS alone it almost blew up... I really shouldn't have told you that because it's only going to scare you more... we were having issues the TARDIS is safe I promise you." The Stone reassured. Amy raised a brow at the Time Lady then walked off heading in the direction the Doctor went in calling for him.

"Did that seriously happen?" Rory questioned as they walked back to the TARDIS. "Sort of... it's a long story." She waved off. "Far too long and complicated to explain."

"Thanks for the help." Rory then said while the Stone unlocked the TARDIS door.

"Trust me I want to help fix your relationship as much as you do. I have had far too many of the Doctors companions fancying the Doctor, it makes things difficult. especially that we're married now." She explained leaning against the console while Rory popped the ring back into the small red box on the console. "First my best friend. I was human at the time, again long story." She waved off when he went to open his mouth to question. "The second was before we got together someone who actually helped us get together. huh, I never thanked her for that... unless I did and forgot."

"Do you always go on and on?" Rory blurted out making the Stone raise a brow before she suddenly realised.

"Normally I know when I'm rambling..." She sighed. "Oh dear... I'm becoming more and more like the Doctor as time goes on."

"We better get back to the Doctor and Amy now..." Rory suggested.

The Stone nodded and walked to the door. "Yes, good idea. They will be wondering where we... are." The Stone blinked seeing a woman and a young boy staring at her.

"Well, that was quick." The woman gave a friendly smile just as Rory exited eyes wide quickly shutting the door behind him.

"Was it?" He questioned.

"It's great that you came."

"Bit retro." The boy frowned. "What is it, portable crime lab?"

"Something like that..." The Stone muttered. "Haven't used it as a lab in a while though..." She hummed.

"Ambrose Northover." She held out a hand to the Stone and then Rory. "I was the one who called. I run the meals on wheels for the whole valley. This is my son, Elliot."

"Where're your uniforms?" Elliot frowned.

"I prefer my blazer and my vans, see comfy and sort of works." She said pointing at her shoes. "Makes running a lot easier.

"Your a little strange..." Elliot frowned.

"Don't be cheeky, Elliot." Ambrose scolded. "They're in plain clothes." She nodded at Rory who didn't reply meerly blinking at the Time Lady acting as everything coming out of her mouth after they questioned her was true. "CID, is it? Anyway, it's over here." She gestured for them to follow.

"Er, okay." Roey muttered. "What are we doing?" He whispered to the Time Lady.

"No idea." She shrugged. "They obviously need help."

"Shouldn't we get the Doctor?"

"Rory." She chuckled shaking her head. "I'm a Time Lady, I used to do this alone all the time, well not all the time because it wasn't fun but there were the few times I went without the Doctor and did this."

"But how do you answer every one of their questions like its the truth?"

"When you're nine hundred and seven it's easy when you have been doing it for a while, just follow my lead and do what I do. Unless I tell you not to then don't do what I do." She said then blinked before pinching the bridge of her nose. "Dear Rassilon it's getting worse." She sighed glad the Doctor wasn't here to tease her about how much she was acting like him now, even worse when she was without him.

---------------------------------------------------------

The Stone stood in front of a dugout grave completely empty with Rory, Ambrose and Elliot. "It's a family plot, see. My aunt Gladys died six years ago. Her husband, Alun, died a few weeks back. He lived in the house two doors down. There's not many of us left up here now."

"Mum, they don't care about that." Elliot moaned. "They want to know about the dead bodies."

The Stone smiled a little. "You remind me of my husband." She said crouching down in front of Elliot. "When he was younger, much younger but what about the dead bodies?" She questioned standing upright.

"Yes. Sorry." Amberose nodded. "Well, they always wanted to be buried in the same plot, together. But when we went to bury Uncle Alun, Gladys wasn't there. Gone. Body, coffin, everything."

"What?" Rory questioned in disbelief.

"The mad thing is, on the surface, the grave was untouched. No signs of it having been messed with."

"Really?" The Stone raised a brow crouching down again and touching the edge of the grass around the grave rubbing part of the dirt between her fingers.

"I'm sorry, I don't understand." Rory frowned.

"Nobody has touched the grave since my aunt was buried but when they dug it open, the body was gone. How is that possible?"

"Anything is possible. Well, almost anything." The Stone shrugged. "Rory stay here." She then jumped down into the grave and brought her sonic out of her blazer flashing it at the four walls.

"Whats that?" Elliot questioned.

"Er... something from my portable crime lab." She replied. "Yes... your right... untouched walls..." she then flashed it at the edge of the wall. "All untouched... until you lot dug it up."

"Come on Elliot." Ambrose started to walk away bringing her son with her.

---------------------------------------------------------

"Do you want sugar?" Elliot said poking his head down at the Stone who was now accompanied by Rory the Stone scanning the walls of the gravels collecting more information.

"Sorry." Rory frowned.

"In your tea. Mum's asking."

"No. Just white, thanks." He nodded.

"Same for me thank you, Elliot." The Stone replied not looking away from the wall.

"There's only one explanation, as far as I can see." He nodded at the Time Lady eying the wall.

"What's that, then?" Rory asked.

"The graves eat people." He replied nodding. "Devour them whole, leaving no trace."

"Not sure about that." Rory frowned.

"They didn't steal the body from above. They couldn't have got in from the sides. Only another thing is, they get in from underneath."

"Not very likely, though."

"When you've eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."

"Sorry?"

"It's Sherlock Holmes." The Stone explained, the corner of her lip tugged into a small smile.

"Yeah. Got the audiobook. The graves round here eat people."

"Have you ever met my husband?" The Stone looked up at him. "You act more and more like him as time goes on." She smiled.

"Elliot!" Ambrose shouted running over.

"Stone..." Rory breathed staring up.

"Well." The Stone hummed eying the red glowing light in the sky. The Stone raised her sonic in the air. "Energy signal of some sort... This has the Doctor written all over it. Come on let's go and find him."

---------------------------------------------------------

"...Energy signal originating from under the Earth. We're trapped." The Doctor informed.

"Doctor, something weird's going on here, the graves are eating people." Rory said walking up to him with the Stone as the Doctor let out a breath seeing that she was fine.

"Not now, Rory." He shook his head. "Energy barricade, invisible to the naked eye. We can't get out and no one from the outside world can get in."

"What?" Rory frowned. "Okay, what about the TARDIS."

"The what?" Nasreen blinked.

"No." The Stone shook her head.

"Those energy patterns would play havoc with the circuits. With a bit of time, maybe, but we've only got nine and a half minutes." He checked his watch.

"Nine and a half minutes to what?" Rory asked.

"We're trapped, and something's burrowing towards the surface," Nasreen informed.

"Where's Amy?" Rory asked looking around for the redhead.

"Get everyone inside the church. Rory, I'll get her back." He answered.

"What do you mean, get her back?" He asked while the Stone swallowed a sinking feeling hitting her stomach. "Where's she gone?"

"She was taken. Into the Earth."

"How? Why didn't you stop it?" He angrily hissed.

"I tried. I promise I tried."

"Well, you should've tried harder!" He snapped.

"Rory." The Stone cut in softly placing a hand on his shoulder. "We will find her. I promise you, both of you that we will do everything we can to get her back and keep the two of you safe. I always keep my promises."

Rory looked at the Time Lords. "Come on, please. We need you alongside us." The Doctor begged.

---------------------------------------------------------

The Doctor and the Stone paced around the church that was packed with boxes while thinking. "So we can't get out, we can't contact anyone, and something, the something that took my husband, is coming up through the Earth," Ambrose said counting the problems.

"Yes. If we move quickly enough, we can be ready." The Doctor reassured.

"No, stop." She held her hand up. "This has gone far enough. What is this?"

"He's telling the truth, love," Mack said to Ambrose.

"Come on. It's not the first time we've had no mobile or phone signals." She rolled her eyes. "Reception's always rubbish."

"Look, Ambrose. We saw the Doctor's friend get taken, okay? You saw the lightning in the sky. I have seen the impossible today, and the only person who's made any sense of it for me, is the Doctor." The Stone raised a brow. He could not go five seconds without impressing someone, no wonder his ego was so big.

"Him?"

"Me." The Doctor said poking his head up. "And my wife, she's pretty impressive, trust me I know." He smirked.

"Doctor." The Stone coughed her cheeks burning red.

"Can you get my dad back?" Elliot looked at them.

"Yes." The Doctor nodded. "But I need you to trust me and the Stone and do exactly as we say from this second onwards because we're running out of time."

"So tell us what to do," Amberose replied after a long pause looking between both Time Lords.

"Thank you." He nodded stepping back a little to stand beside the Stone. "We have eight minutes to set up a line of defence. Bring me every phone, every camera, every piece of recording or transmitting equipment you can find."

"Every burglar alarm, every movement sensor, every security light." The Doctor said walking past Rory in the graveyard, the Stone fixing a camera in place.

"We want the whole area covered with sensors." The Time Lady added while the Doctor flashed his sonic at the light Rory fitted.

---------------------------------------------------------

"Right, guys, we need to be ready for whatever's coming up." He then patted Elliot's shoulder glancing at the computer monitor with three dots blinking on a line as they headed up. "I need a map of the village marking where the cameras are going."

"I can't do the words." He shook his head. "I'm dyslexic."

"Oh, that's all right, I can't make a decent meringue."

"Trust me I know." The Stone nodded making a disgusted face. "One day sweetheart." She patted his shoulder. "But Elliot draw like your life depends on it." She smiled at the boy.

"Six minutes forty," Mack informed.
