Chapter 56: Miracle or Mutation
Ok readers. Sorry for the ending of the last chapter lol. I wanted your heart racing, curiosity bubbling, and mind wandering just a little bit. This chapter is going to contain quite a bit of medical terminology. I've tried my very best to explain everything in layman's terms. If you wish to Google the terms or phenomenon that occurred be my guest. I would like you to know that Googling it will only confuse you more and that I've spent many weeks studying up on this specific subject, and even talked to two separate actual real life doctors about it. I've done my research and what's about to happen is totally possible. It's extremely rare, but 100% possible. All the facts given and the information provided is 100% factual. Without any more interruptions, the next chapter:
Cameron's P.O.V.
I pull Walter closer to my chest as the doctor's words leave his mouth. I immediately feel Shawn step up next to me, his arm moving in front of my arm that's holding Walter. "What do you mean doctor?" Shawn says. Dr. Michaels flips through the pages in the file that's resting on his clip board.
"I think we're going to need to run more test." Dr. Michaels says.
"What do you mean run more test?" I question, my heart starting to beat faster. I look back down at Walter. What could possibly be wrong with such a perfect creation?
"I mean the DNA test. There must be some kind of mistake here."
"Dr. Michaels what is going on?" my mom questions seriously.
"I've only seen this once, maybe twice before." the doctor says aloud. He says the statement more to himself. "We discussed it very briefly in med school."
"What's going on?!" Shawn almost yells.
"I'm not meaning to scare you guys." he says. "It's just these test results can't be right."
"Who do they say the father is?" my mom asks.
"No mom I don't wanna know." I say out loud. They are not going to go against my wishes.
"You don't understand Mr. Mendes-Dallas." Dr. Michaels says.
"What do you mean I don't understand? I need you to respect my wishes as to not wanting to know who the paternal father is."
"These aren't normal test results sir." he says out loud.
"What's wrong with them?" Shawn asks.
"Wait a minute!" Dr. Michaels says out loud. "I didn't see it in the file but was Sierra originally pregnant with twins?" he asks.
"Yes." I say out loud. "I don't see why there originally being two children matters?" I ask.
"That explains everything." Dr. Michaels says.
"Explains what?" I ask.
"Are any of you familiar with the term Chimera?" Dr. Michaels asks quickly.
"No." Shawn says. He looks at me and I shake my head. My mom and Sierra both have the same confused looks. None of us have ever heard of the term.
"Well a chimera is a person. A chimera starts off as two fraternal twins in the uterus. Very early in development the two embryos fuse together to form one single embryo. So your typical chimera has two sets of DNA. One from one twin and the other from another. This can be expressed in the paternity test as if you were to mix two siblings DNA together. Another term called superfecundation refers to two separate ova being fertilized by two different fathers." I look over at Shawn. I'm so confused.
"Can you explain that one more time?" Shawn asks, also confused.
"Ok so basically you had two fraternal twins inside of Sierra's womb."
"Ok." I say.
"Well these two fraternal twins merged together to create one single embryo. People born in this rare phenomenon are called chimeras."
"Ok." I say again. It makes sense so far. The two babies inside of Sierra merged together to create one baby. "So a chimera is when one dad fertilizes two eggs inside a mom and the two embryos fuse together?"
"Exactly." he says.
"So which one of us fertilized the two embryos that merged?"
"It seems from the results that we have the rarest form of chimera there is. This child is a bipaternal chimera."
"What's that mean?" Shawn asks.
"That means that the two embryos that merged together were each fertilized by you and Cameron."
"So you're saying that the two babies inside of Sierra were each fertilized by one of us?" Shawn says. "But those two separate embryos fused together to create one baby?"
"That's exactly what has happened." Dr. Michaels says. "The two fraternal twins inside of Sierra must have been one from Cameron and one from you. These two embryos fuzed together to create one single person."
"So wait a minute." I say. My heart is beating fast as I go to ask my question. "You're telling me that Walter is genetically both Shawn and I's?" I ask.
"That's what the test results are showing. Your child has 50% DNA from the egg donor, 50% DNA from Shawn, and 50% DNA from Cameron."
"But that's more than 100%." I say questionably.
"That's because Walter is a bipaternal chimera." I look over at a smiling Shawn.
"Folks we have before us one of nature's rarest forms of a healthy mutation."
"Shawn that means that Walter is paternally both of ours." His eyes widen. "He's actually genetically both of ours!" I say excitedly. Shawn softly pulls my into a hug, making sure not to hurt Walter.
"I love you so much." he says, planting a kiss on my lips. "And I love you so much too." he says, laughing and bending over to kiss Walter.
"Do you mind if I do some more DNA test on Walter? You guys can leave the hospital and return home now. You wouldn't have to stay here. The only reason behind me wanting to get these tests is because in all my years of being a doctor I've never seen, heard of, or even encountered a bipaternal chimera. I have no idea if he is more susceptible to genetic mutations, or if he will function just like a normal human being. Walter is probably the only one of his kind known to the world right now." I smile over at Shawn. "I'll be right back to get swabs." he says. I turn back to Shawn.
"Shawn, Walter is actually both of our's child." I've literally never felt the amount of joy I'm feeling in my body right now.
"This is so strange." Shawn says. I narrow my eyebrows at the word strange. "No I mean strange in a good way!" he says smiling. "God actually delivered us exactly what we wanted." He hugs me again, still making sure not to hurt Walter. "I love you so much little buddy." he says to a sleeping Walter.
"Honey this is crazy. I don't even know how to process all of this." my mom says. I turn over to look at Sierra who's seemed to be at a loss of words this whole time.
"So is Walter going to look like both of you guys then?" she asks smiling. "He's actually going to get certain traits from both of you."
"And the egg donor." Shawn adds.
"Yah but still. He's literally a mix of both of you."
"Yes." I say laughing. I look down at my little miracle. I can't believe he actually happened. He's exactly what I wanted but always though I could never have. He's my little miracle.
"He's our little miracle." Shawn says to me.
"That's exactly what I just said in my head." I say to Shawn laughing. After a couple of minutes the doctor returned to the room. He got swabs from all three of our cheeks, causing Walter to cry, and me having to hand him over to Shawn to calm him down. He cuddled into his arms, falling back to sleep in seconds.
"I would like for you guys to bring Walter in for more check ups then the regular infant. I want to get DNA test done once a month at first, and depending on if he is genetically staying the same or mutating then the rate of his checkups may decrease or increase."
"Should we be concerned for his health?" I ask nervously.
"Everything about Walter's health is absolutely fine. My only concern is with him getting his DNA from three different parents, I would think that he is more susceptible to genetic mutations."
"And what if he does start to develop genetic mutations?"
"There's really nothing we could do. His DNA would replicate regardless of what we did to help him."
"So he could die?" Shawn asks worried.
"Well technically we are all open to genetic mutations. There is no medical protocol telling me wether or not Walter will be at the same risk for genetic mutations as you and me or if the chances are higher. The only reason I want to start off with monthly checkups is simply as a precaution." Phew. I just about got really scared. The doctor noticed Shawn's faces didn't seem exactly pleased. "Walter is healthy as a horse Shawn. The checkups are a just in case. Just like all of his infant checkups." Shawn finally understands what the doctor is saying.
"Ohhh ok." he says. I laugh at him.
"Well without any other reason, you all are free to leave the hospital. I will go get Walter's official birth certificate and be right back." My mom walks to the corner, bringing over Walter's car-seat.
"You ready to go buddy?" Shawn asks a sleeping Walter. Shawn and I strap him into his car seat. We help Sierra out of the bed, get his official birth certificate, and walk out of the hospital with our new born baby.
Hey guys! What'd you think? If you are confused by any of the terminology, occurrences, or just anything in general ask right here. I know the path I chose was a little complicated to explain, but I actually figured out a realistic, 100% factual, actual way for Cameron Dallas and Shawn Mendes to have a baby together. (With the help of an egg donor and surrogate mother of course.) If you are at all confused ask me questions and I will answer them to the best of my ability. Like I said, googling this stuff is only going to make it more confusing; but you can if you want. See yah guys next chapter✌🏻
