Chapter 25

Bucky had searched the rubble of the building for hours, trying to find a body. But there wasn't one, and forensics said the Willow would have been blown to pieces. Now he was sitting next to Steve at Willow Dariela's funeral. Bucky felt like he was moving underwater, everything taking him too long. There was no body in Willow's coffin, it was just a sleek black box. Bucky had thought that Willow would have very few people at her funeral, but he was obviously wrong. All of the team was there of course, even Tony Stark. Tallulah was sitting by herself, she hadn't spoken to anyone since the funeral started. But in addition to the team and Tallulah, there were several other people. A tall man who'd introduced himself as Willow's younger brother. And then a young man with a frightening resemblance to Willow, whose name was Warren. He had short silver hair and hazel green eyes, which seemed to be brimming with tears. There were two women, both with curly red hair and blue eyes; they didn't seem to be very upset about the death of their sister.

"Look's like Willow's doppelganger showed up," Tony commented.

"That's her twin brother you ignorant twit," Lulu hissed at Tony. "Now shut up."

The tall man stood and left before the funeral was even over, and the red heads whispered to each other throughout the entire thing. It made Bucky want to throw at chair at them both. This was Willow's funeral for Gods sake! When the funeral was over, Tallulah and Warren helped to lower Willow's casket into the ground. Everyone put in shovelful after shovelful of dirt, covering the black casket.

Then slowly, one by one, everyone left the cemetery; until only Lulu, Steve, Bucky, and Warren were left standing by Willow's headstone. Warren stood silently, looking like he was holding back tears. Lulu had sunk to the ground next to the tombstone, one of her pale hands resting on it's black surface. "Willow...." she whispered. And then Tallulah Azteca, one of the most frightening people Bucky knew burst into tears. Lulu's whole body was shaking, her tears splattering onto the ground.

Bucky joined her kneeling next to Willow's headstone, and put a consoling hand on Lulu's back. He felt like he was being ripped into a million pieces, all he wanted to do was collapse and sob, just like Lulu. But right now he needed to be there to comfort Willow's best friend, who had known Willow for over ten years, and had probably known Willow better than he did. So Bucky uttered the empty words that he knew would hold no meaning for Lulu, but they were something that everyone seemed to say at funerals, "Willow's in a better place now."

Lulu continued crying, managing to mumble, "I don't care where she is. I want Willow here. I want my best friend back." Lulu's voice was growing hoarse from crying.  Bucky honestly had no idea how to comfort her, he couldn't even comfort himself. He glanced at Steve, whose blue eyes were shining with unshed tears. Warren walked forward, and sat down on the grass next to Tallulah.

Then Warren Dariela began to speak, "Lulu, we all want her here. I wish I could take her place. She was my twin sister, and I don't know what I'm going to do without her. I loved her, and should have been there to protect her when we were growing up. But Willow would be furious with us for this, she'd been ticked off beyond imagination that we're standing around crying when there's work to be done."

Lulu nodded, and allowed Warren to lead her away from the stone. Bucky remained kneeling, tracing the words on Willow's tomb.

  Willow Dariela

  28 years old

SHIELD Agent, Beloved Sister and Friend

"One Day we'll look back on this and laugh."

Bucky knew Willow had chosen the phrase to go onto her gravestone, It had been written in her will. Bucky was vaguely aware of Steve standing behind him, but Bucky Barnes sat there with his right hand on the smooth black stone until the sun had set.
