Chapter 27
"I agree that getting rid of the agents was right, but that kind of mass killing, that's a HYDRA thing," Willow snapped, glaring across the table at Coulson. After the mission was over, Coulson had invited several agents and a few Avengers to a meeting. He hadn't discussed Steve or Bucky's reports on the mission yet, but he'd called this small assembly to hear them out; and to discuss Bucky's request to leave SHIELD. Because Bucky was classified as a war criminal, he was only allowed to roam free because he was enlisted as a SHIELD agent, so Steve knew that Willow and Bucky had a lot riding on this meeting.
"I'm aware of your views Agent Dariela, as well as the views of Agents Rogers and Barnes. Agent Tallulah has seconded your voice as well, though she is currently in the infirmary and couldn't attend our meeting," Agent Coulson replied calmly. "And I completely agree with you, I don't like what we had to do, and it's one more thing on a long list that will keep some of us from sleeping soundly at night. But we saved hundreds of innocent people from the HDYRA, again. I will never support going in and crossing off people, but these were HYDRA agents. It was them or us, them or innocent civilians. I've heard your opinions, now the matter is closed."
Steve admired Coulson's calm and bravery, he didn't think there could be a better director. But he also didn't want to be part of an organization that had been riddled with HYDRA, not once, but twice. Coulson was right of course, they'd done the right thing, but he was also right in saying that it was another item on the long list of things that would keep agents up at night. Steve also didn't think he could stare so calmly at and angry Willow Dariela, though Willow's angry glances at Coulson were nothing compared to the looks of seething hatred that she sent toward Tony Stark. Steve knew why Coulson had invited Stark, but he also knew that Tony wanted Bucky behind bars, especially after he learned that the Winter Soldier had killed his parents.
"Then that brings us to the second point of this meeting," Coulson continued, "The release of two of our valuable agents, Agents Barnes and Dariela."
"Yes, that's it, release a dangerous criminal to run wild again," Tony muttered.
Coulson ignored him, "Everyone in this room is aware of Agent Barnes' situation, and so I'd like to take a vote. Before we do that however, I'd like to say a few things considering their service to SHIELD. Agent Dariela joined SHIELD and from day one threw herself into each and every mission, she refused to leave a dangerous sight until every civilian had been cleared, and ended up paralyzed as a result. She retired after the incident, but then agreed to return to SHIELD when we called on her. Agent Barnes' has followed every order he was given from SHIELD, and has never given me any reason to doubt his loyalty. Now, does anyone have anything to say?"
"Yeah, Coulson; why is this even a discussion? If Barnes doesn't want to work for SHIELD, I know of several nice comfy high security prisons he can be in by tonight," Tony said.
The glass of water in front of Tony exploded, and Willow snarled, "Oh, and while were' on the subject of throwing people in jail. Let's not forget how quick Tony was to betray Captain Rogers, and how easily He was tricked by HYDRA."
"Agent Dariela, a little restraint," Romanoff said quietly from her position standing against one of the walls. "No ones throwing anyone in prison."
Steve noticed that most of the team was glaring at Tony, and he was able to hold on to the hope that Bucky would in deed be able to walk free.
"Girls, your both pretty," Clint stepped forward and moved between Willow and Tony, "Let's just vote on the matter at hand, so I can go home. Let me put it like this, I know Willow Dariela, I think she's perfectly capable of dealing with Agent Barnes', should he go over to the darkside or something. In fact, let's simply make this a vote for placing Barnes in the custody of an experienced SHIELD agent, Willow Dariela."
Steve watched as the room silenced and papers shuffled, he knew his best friend's freedom hinged on what came next.
