Shattered masks

Ladybug stood there, not knowing if she should keep on going. Her mind raced as she thought about what she was getting herself into. For years they kept their identities a secret, no matter how much it caused them pain, they still hid it from each other. Years they kept the secret from their family and friends, they still didn't know, but soon will. It hurts Ladybug, that the biggest and best moments of her life have to be kept hidden away.

She realized she was still not moving, the midnight sky concealing her vision. Only the moon and stars gave her enough light so she won't be as blind. The eiffel tower was not far from where she was, only four more blocks until she could reach it. Chat Noir was probably already there, waiting for her arrival.

Taking deep breaths, she threw her yo-yo and swung from building to building. She swiftly landed on the ledge of the tower, looking out onto the city. Glancing around, she spotted no black cat, so she sat down, legs dangling over to wait.

A few minutes later, she heard a sudden whip of air come her way. A dark figure slowly walked forward, taking a seat next to her. He breathed out a staggered sigh, facing the city they both had fought for. So many memories, and sadly they can't make any new ones, not when it comes to the unbreakable duo.

They sat there for what felt like hours. Complete silence, but their own two beating hearts and slow breaths. When finally Ladybug decides to break off the silence.

"Are you scared?" she asked, still not looking at him.

        "Absolutely" he breathed.

Still they looked off to the distance, not daring to look at each other.

"Are you sure about this? We could always do this another time,"

That's not true, they both know it, tonight will be their last time seeing each other as Ladybug and Chat Noir.

"No. It's now or never. And I don't think I could live any longer without knowing who is behind your mask,"

He said it so determined, yet so afraid. This whole time, ever since he saw her, he wanted to know who she was, it didn't help his curiosity when he fell in love with her.

She chuckled, "You know what they say, curiosity killed the cat," she grinned, but it soon faded when she got no response.

Chat turned to her, his hand cupping her chin to make her look at him.
"My lady, this is serious, what if you don't like who I am? What if after all this waiting, you are disappointed?"

He said it in a hurt tone. His eyes shining with threatening tears as his lips quivered. Ladybug never saw him like this, for all the times he flirted with her, he showed off and gave her that signature smirk. She would have never thought she would live to see a day when Chat Noir was crying, not even that, but scared. He looked terrified at what was coming. She felt pity for the cat, more than she ever had.

She wrapped her arms around him, noticing the stiffness in his body, but soon relaxed and pulled his arms around her tightly. As if it was the last time they would ever make body contact.

"Oh, kitty, I would never be disappointed, no matter who you are, no matter who is under that mask, you will still be my favourite kitty. Forever and always," she whispered gently in his cat ear.

"H-how could you be for sure?" he stuttered, keeping his eyes shut.

He could feel Ladybug's grin, "Would I ever lie to you cataboo?"

This gave the cat a chuckle, but he didn't say anything else.

Ladybug wiggled her way out of his grasp. Noting the flick of disappointment in this eyes. She smiled, soon getting a smile back. They sat there, staring into each other's eyes, examining their features closer. Chat's smile grew as he noticed something he didn't catch before. His lady has a sprinkle of freckles dancing across her nose and cheeks. He caught her confused expression and chuckled.

"You have freckles!" he exclaimed, only getting even more of a confused look.

"I never noticed that before. It is almost like teeny tiny ladybugs got stuck on your face,"

She replied with a role of her eyes, yet giggled nonetheless. Man did he love her giggle, it was like he got struck with butterflies every time. Of course the good kind of butterflies. Suddenly he wasn't as afraid, instead of more excited on whoever is behind the mask. No matter who it is, he knows he will love her all the same.

Chat grabbed Ladybugs hands, giving her the best ready face he could muster. She stared at him, knowing it is time.

"M'lady, are you ready?" he asked, after a hesitation she nodded.

They both stood up, holding each other's hands. They've been together for years on end, now they are eighteen, going off to college. No more crime fighting for the now ending duo. Tomorrow is when their lives begin, off on their own, searching for themselves. How could they live without Ladybug and Chat Noir? Without Tikki? Without Plague? Without saving Paris with their best friend?

They have grown so much over the years. After a while they started to hang out without having to fight an akuma. Sometimes they would eat at a cafe, or maybe the zoo. And of course they have to hang out at their favourite spot in all of Paris, the eiffel tower.

Now it is time to reveal, no more dodging away, no more questions, this is the time Ladybug will find out who has been flirting with her ever since they had met. Chat Noir will find out who didn't feel the same way towards him after all this time, who has been rejecting him. She will find out who she kissed to break him out of the spell, from what was ages ago. He will find out who has made him not being able to sleep at night, the one who he is constantly thinking about.

They nod at each other, signaling that they are ready. At the same time they release their transformation, red and black are the only things they could see.

When the transformation wears off, they stare at each other in disbelief. Where Ladybug once stood, was replaced by pink pants, white shirt with pink blossoms and a gray jacket. Her eyes, sapphire blue, were sparkling more than he had ever seen them before.

In Chat's place stood an emerald eyed boy, jeans, a black shirt covered by a white jacket. He looked surprised, yet so happy, like if he's been told the greatest secret of the world.

It felt like a weight was off his chest, like the world can keep moving time and he wouldn't care. Because he knows, the girl of his dreams is right in front of him, and turns out she has been sitting behind him in class all this time. The girl who stuttered every time they spoke to each other. He has always wondered why, but he didn't want to ask, just in case if it made her feel uncomfortable. He smiled as big as he could, not caring if he looked goofy and weird. Because his lady is his Mari.

She stood there, speechless, yet her mouth was open, so she quickly pressed her lips together. The love of her life was the one who has been flirting with her the whole time. Even worse, she rejected him every time. Every time Chat flexed his muscles in front of her, every time he showed off, telling her how amazing he was. It was all Adrien.

A memory came to mind. She had to strain her self from not gasping. Years ago, when Kim got akumatized, she kissed Chat. She kissed the perfect boy without even knowing it. Who would have known that would be her first kiss?  At the time she wasn't really thinking about it.           All she was worried about was getting Chat back. When she got home she stayed up all night thinking about. She couldn't lie, she kind of liked it. It felt warm and soothing, like she's been kissing a smooth pillow.

Knowing it is now Adrien who she had kissed, set a shiver down her spine. For once she didn't feel so guilty for liking the kiss. Now it felt like an accomplishment, she, the clumsy Marinette, kissed the dreamy model, Adrien.

        "Marinette," Adrien breathed.

Too Marinette, her name sounded like a sin when he said it. So delicate.

"All this time it has been the cute, stuttering girl behind me in class. No wonder I couldn't figure it out!  You and Ladybug are so different. Yet the same in a lot different ways," he said with excitement.

"Y-you m-mean, you're not disappointed?" she stuttered in disbelief.

Adrien chuckled, "Why should I be disappointed? My love of my life is one of my bestest of friends. The one who made me like school. I would never be disappointed by you, Mari."

Marinette took a start when he said his nickname for her. One thing that is similar to Adrien and Chat, are all the nicknames. She smiled, at all the times he called her m'lady, or princess, or even bugaboo.  She lead on that she didn't like him calling her lose. But inside, she loved them. It made her feel special, like someone is finally paying attention to her. That is one of the things she liked being with Chat, he always made her feel loved.

Adrien moved closer to Marinette, leaving only inches of space between the two. He looked at her with love and care, like if he would make the smallest false move, she would break.

"Marinette, I was trying to tell you ever since our first year together. But whenever I could find the smallest hinge of courage, it would only lead to failure. Mari, even though I fell under Ladybug's spell first, doesn't mean my feelings change any less for you. You are both equal. Even behind the mask you are still yourself," he caressed his hand on her cheek, making sure he keeps her gaze.  "A beautiful, smart girl, who would do anything to help others, even if it means she will have to face consequences at the end. You risk your own life to help others in need, without a flinch. You are my hero Mari, forever and always."

Marinette felt her face burn, she probably looked like a tomato. Hopefully the now ending midnight darkness, will cover most of it up from his sight.

His hands were warm and silky, so light as he rubbed his thumb in circles on her cheek. Her knees trembled, how could eyes be so bright, so beautiful and mysterious. She felt pity, when she seeked out that the shining emeralds reflected a hinge of pain, of sorrow. She was relieved when the sadness was overpowered by all of the happiness and love spilling out onto her. Her, of all people in the world. He loves her. And only her.

        'Marinette, I-"

"No," she interrupted. "Don't say anything."

She grabbed his face and pulled him into her. Crushing her lips on his. At first Adrien was stiff, startled at her surprised action, but eventually soaked in, melting into her arms that are now hung over his shoulders. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her closer against his chest, deepening the kiss.

When they finally broke the kiss, he loosened his only grip enough for her to look at him. They smiled, each one goofier than the other.

"M'lady, I'm madly in love with you," he confessed with wide eyes.

After another passionate kiss, Marinette leans closer to Adrien.

She smirks with a whisper, "I love you too, kitty."
