Her safe place
Four hours ago:
Sitting in his dark and icy office Noah tried to smoke out his very thoughts. The visions he was getting were becoming nasty. He was seeing things he knew can't be true. And, asking his not so trusted wife was out of the question now. He wondered if he can ever share anything with her.
Walking to the huge window wall of his office he looked out to see the city running under his feet.
It was Saturday. The whole week he worked extra to make some time free on this day for his kids but found it hard getting to his house and ends up calling for some meetings with the marketing or accounts department to pass his day. And, now when his PA had left and he was sitting alone on his floor the feeling of betrayal peeped in again.
Knowing that the woman he was supposed to live with can't be trusted was suffocating. The moment Grace told him about Sydney not living in the house not for once he had believed her but coming home and knowing that she was indeed trusting his staff over him was the lesson he was never going to forget. From that very time, there was something that was finished in him. He couldn't make him compliment her.
Letting out a cold sigh he was about to leave his office when his office phone rang.
"Hello," Noah asked,
"Mr. Miller, your friend Grace Winston is here to see you."
Wow! He scoffed inwardly but managed a cold,
"Let her in," He replied and got his jacket to get to home. He was in no mood to talk to Grace longer than necessary anyway. Leaning to his desk he didn't have to wait much as Grace came in two minutes. And, the moment he looked at her pissed face he knew he wasn't ready for any kind of conversation she was coming up with.
"I am tired, Grace..." He tried to pass her when she came right in front of him to yell, "Hell! You are tired."
"...who the hell are you to divorce Sydney?" Noah realized she was outdated on the news but his brows shot up in wary as he rolled his eyes in exhaustion before coming, "None of it is your GODDAMN business," Looking at her dejected face he smirked before passing her again and got out of his office to the lift. He heard her heels coming and didn't give any mind to her until he heard,
"...There was no car accident...Sarah was killed," His lift opened while he turned on his heels to look right into Grace's eyes. A gasp escaped Grace's mouth when she found his hand on her throat and saw red in his eyes.
"I want a name," He seethed but looked at her to find her Sarah. Those same eyes, face, hair...Grace looked scared and even the thought that someone made her scared for her life and then killed her was enough for him to burn this whole world down.
"You...you..." Thinking she was arguing with him he let go of her neck and asked her again as she coughed. "I want a name Grace...Why? Why her?" He broke at the last word and shivered to ask, "Or you don't know...Fuck" He swore before punching the wall behind him. Looking at his back again he waited for her to back up and face him. His heart skipped a beat when finally with her hands on her knee she tried to stabilize herself,
"You killed her, Noah" He saw her gulp before she stood again to face him and repeated,
"You killed her Noah," This time her voice was a sympathetic whisper.
"You are lying,..." He said shaking his head in no.
"Why the hell are you lying?" He yelled this time without giving her any time to talk.
"I am not lying,...I am so sorry, Noah." She tried to say but shivered when he screamed,
"Why are you standing here, then? Why...why you would talk to the killer of your own goddamn sister?" He held Grace's arms and shook her vigorously.
"Sarah was deceiving you...All of us..." She stopped looking at him still now. "Michael and I caught her posing me and making out with Michael but...but for you we tried to keep our mouth shut. She was always into Michael," She added carefully knowing all of this could be so much for him. But it was needed. It was the need of the time to tell him the truth.
"...I...Sarah loved me...and even if what you are saying is...is true...I would have not killed her."
"She was about to kill me and you,...It was self-defense, Noah...." Letting her arms go Noah pulled his hair back.
It can't be true. It can never happen. He ranted in his brain while Sarah's innocent face roamed in his brain.
Grace tried to gauge his reaction and started worrying about not telling Michael about her visit to Noah. His demeanor had started to scare her. She tried to lean into him to look at his face that he had slightly turned but got startled when he looked at her all of a sudden.
"Sydney knew about it?" His question took her off guard,
"Why does it matter?" Grace tried to dodge the question sensing the answer will only escalate the situation to worsen.
"Answer me, Grace...because I fucking want to know how people close to me are keeping me in dark and taking advantage of my situation." He chewed the last words in anger while Grace only gulped before saying,
"Don't leave Sydney...She is been through hell because of you and Sarah..."
"You don't tell me what I am to..." Noah started in a loud tone but was cut off by Grace.
"Keep that fucking voice lower..." She yelled at his face to calm him down and taking advantage of him silent for a second she pointed at his chest with her nose flaring.
"Your insecure ass married Sydney knowing she will always be so low in front of you." She stopped to take the breath before starting, "Like a coward bastard you took advantage of her situation to get her in your fucking messed up life,"
Looking at his brows knitted closer she realized she had gone strong at him. Gulping hard she started carefully this time. "But we could understand you. Jasper even helped you out in a lot of matters he should haven't but...but things got out of hands...You...you almost killed her and she was about to leave you when Jasper called me and I tell her about Sarah. She...she deserved to know, Noah. I don't know if you truly love her or not. But she doesn't deserve to be treated the way you are treating her...You owe her a lot..."
"Grace...I need to go..." Noah said before getting into the lift. Grace knowing she shouldn't leave him alone took the staircase and got her out of breath self to the parking lot catching Noah right before he was getting into his Mercedes. "Noah, I think you shouldn't drive. Or,...or let me in," but the moment he passed his bloodshot eyes she got silent, "And, if anything you told me here didn't turn out to be true we two will have serious problems."
He raced his car out of the parking. The only thing in his mind right now was to interrogate Sydney.
"I love you..." He recalled whispering in Sarah's ear taking the left turn in a rash way.
"Did you make this?" Looking at the paper fell out of her hand he asked,
"Yea,..." He still remembers how Sarah got irritated that he got the paper out of her novel without her asking but looking at Michael's pencil drafted portrait made him uneasy.
"You do realize that you are making me jealous of my best friend." Only now he realized how stupid he was to say those words picking her up laughing.
"You know I like giving meaningful gifts."
"And, what meaningful things you bought me?" He asked her with a pout as he came to kiss her.
"Your birthday always comes in the final term. You should be moved that I get to the store for you," He remembers how he used to swoon over her comebacks or confidence in her eyes. She was the only one who was never moved by his status. She was the only one who could put a leash on his wild heart.
All that time, memories, laughter was making him believe it can't be true. He recalled his visions about abusing Sydney and now Grace's confession made the shiver ran in his spine.
"No, no, no, no...that can't be true. I will never hit someone because I am insecure. I would never do this...Grace...is lying." He said totally immersed recalling that innocent face and cherry lips of Sarah. "My Sarah can't do this. She only loved me. She can never do this. She..." He startled out of his haze when the horn of a car coming from right told him he had crossed the signal. The blinding light didn't give him enough time.
"Sarah..." He breathed out when his car collided with a sheer force and got shoved to the other side of the road. The glass shattered and pierced his skin over his shoulder.
"You have to go, Noah. You have to go!" He could hear Sarah's voice as she stabbed him.
"Sir!...Sir! Are you fine?" Noah opened his eyes hearing to someone but didn't know what to answer. He didn't know if he was fine. He felt cold.
"Sir! Are you hurt? Are you trapped," Noah looked at the man talking in the Irish accent.
He shook his head in no and took his hand before letting two men helping him out of the vehicle.
"Your shoulder is bleeding. You would need stitches when I will take out the glass on the shoulder. This..." The doctor looked at his temple that had a little bump before commenting. "You can put ice here."
Before the person in charge could tell the driver to take the ambulance to the hospital Noah blinked and looked at his surroundings. "For how long I was out?"
"We got the call around twenty minutes ago,..." The woman told him but when he didn't move she added,
"Sir, we are taking you to the hospital. We can call your family..."
"Sydney..." He whispered before adding in hurry, "I need to go..." Noah blinked while a tear fell on his left cheek.
"Sir..." The woman called him as he got out of the ambulance.
"Your assistance is not needed anymore. They will be here in two minutes..." Noah told her and heard her asking,
"Who?"
"Mr. Miller...you alright?" Noah looked at his right before sparing a look to the woman who was helping him out.
"Thank you," Noah whispered before walking away to the cars parked on the right side of the road and accepted the coat offered to him.
"To home," He ordered making driver starting the engine. A man held the door for him but before he could get in the car he pulled out his phone and dialed for Sydney. He recalled having her number saved as my redhead wife but now it was only Sydney.
He had to wait for a minute and his heart dropped knowing she might not wait on him anymore. And, knowing he was to blame didn't help much. He was ready to give up when he heard, "Hello,"
Her voice was the same. She was the same. He wanted to tell her that he was back but the tears clogging his throat took the best of him as he walked a little away from his car.
"Noah," He heard her say and couldn't help a chilled sigh coming out of his mouth.
"I am sorry, Sydney. I am sorry,..." He tried to say but again a sob got the best of him.
"What...What happened?" He heard Sydney say and only sighed over all the time lost between them.
"What are you doing here?" The fear in Sydney's voice was noticed by him without a failure.
"Sydney..." He asked but only heard a gasp again before the line got cut.
"Sydney!" He shrieked and get in the car while dialing for the home security.
"FAST! He ordered and winced at his shoulder bleeding.
*********
"I don't know what are you talking about?" Sydney replied in her shaky breath all the while being too alert of the blade over her neck.
"I don't have any fucking time for this. You took to me to that kid or I will kill all the boys coming into my view." Her captor seethed making his hold around her waist tighter.
The mere thought of anything happening to Gideon or Nick made her shiver. "Seb,..." Sydney seethed before groaning with his other arm getting tighter around her neck.
"You won't be able to get away, there are many guards..." Sydney warned him but was cut off when he whispered in her ear,
"They were here when I got in,"
"Ahh,..." She groaned and tried to get away when he licked her ear.
"Shut up and tell me where the son of a bitch is?" Seb seethed but listening to some footsteps coming he muffled her possible scream of help and pulled her to another hallway. This time she was seeing his demon eyes as he caged her between his body and the wall behind.
"Come on, Mrs. Miller...how the hell on the earth you can bring up a snakelet like him."
"Don't you dare..." Sydney said in her muffled voice and tried to hit him but he was way faster than her.
"Doesn't he make you recall Lucifer?" Seb had a playful smile on his face this time.
"I...never saw Lucifer in him,..." She got cut off with the creepy smile on his face while she tried harder to push him away.
"Oh, you cracked woman! How you can ever see Lucifer in him when he is not Lucifer's biological son." The news got Sydney still. She looked at him and knew it can't be true. She remembered Christine telling her that it was Lucifer's son.
"He is the son of a stupid cop who believes he can catch Lucifer. It was...it was fun killing his parents. It could have been more fun if Lucifer would have killed him too but he adopted him. You know when you feel like turning your enemy's son like you. It was like that..." The news took a few seconds to set in but this time it was Sydney with her lips curled up. Looking at the satisfaction in Sydney's eyes got his hand away.
"You can never turn him into a bad guy, Seb. He will never be like you." The confidence in Sydney's eyes made Seb whispered in her ear.
"Oh no,...I don't have any plans to let that kid live, honey. I am not Lucifer. I am not a stupid ass who will turn a huge corporation against him for a quick fuck." Sydney couldn't focus on anything else than the fact that he was here to kill Nick. Making him believe that she is going to push him she bites his hand holding the knife instead. Getting away with the knife she got out of his hold to point the knife at him.
"Why?" She asked giving him a murderous look.
"He is the only rightful owner of Lucifer..." Before he could continue Sydney asked,
"You think Lucifer will let you live..."
"Do you think Lucifer is still alive...Honey, you killed him. Didn't Christine tell you?" A trail of sweat dropped off her forehead while her body heaved in fear.
"Jasper said he is alive..." Sydney tried to stay confident.
"That's because we couldn't risk people knowing that he is dead,..." Listening to Seb got Sydney's throat dry.
"That can't be true. I...I can't believe he is dead with only a hit."
"About that? Stabbing him a few times in his heart did the work...I even planned to safely free your kids and you because all of you were a ticking bomb anyway. Everything was great until YOU RAN OFF with that baby boy."
"Christine,..." Sydney tried to quote that tall blonde when Seb interrupted.
"Yea...yea...I know. She deceived me. Believe me, I made sure to make her death an example." Listening to these confessions made Sydney sick to her stomach.
"Seb,..you don't need to do this. I...or Noah we don't want to do anything to whatever that kid can claim and he will never be a threat to you. So,...please leave me and my family..."
"Who are you?" Nick opened the door to witness her mom talking to a stranger while his mom had her back to him.
"Nick,...get inside your room..." Sydney ordered while Seb asked at the same time.
"Who are you?"
But when he took long strides to Nick ignoring the knife in Sydney's hand it left Sydney with no other option but to latch on him. The next second she found her hand twisted by Seb but to save Nick she blocked him using her back and tried to hold him.
"Nick RUN!"
"Mommy,..." Looking at the horrible expression the man had forced his mom out of the way left Nick with no option but to call Sydney for help.
"Run,...please run,..." Sydney pleaded and struggle her hard to keep that man at bay before finally seeing Nick's legs carrying him away.
"Help!" She shrieked the moment she could get some time but gasped when he turned her to him and slapped her before shoving her to the wall. Two guards came right in. She tried to get up and run leaving them tackling Seb. She walked to the small living room ahead before whispering, "Nick, where are you, my baby?"
She was about to leave the space and get further ahead when she heard the teeth were rattling. She gets to see behind the small single piece of Sofa in the corner to find Nick curled.
"Oh my baby," She whispered before kneeling and hugging him to her chest. "Shhh...everything will be fine," She whispered but both shook listening to all the chaos coming from the hallway.
"Nick,...You are safe,...you are safe." She tried her best to not shake so she could relax him and he did relax in her arms but the moment both listened to, "Mrs. Miller..." in a rhythmic sound got them scared again.
"Where are you...little one?" Seb said the last part in a whisper.
Sydney bit her lower lip to not make any sound and put her hand on Nick's mouth.
His feet sound terribly close. She could sense that he already had found them. Sydney took a long breath and prepared herself to push Nick away to make him run.
"Here you are,..." She felt him standing right behind them and pushed Nick away before she held onto his leg to make him fall. Only a few feet away Nick got himself curled and refused to move an inched under the spell of fear.
She groaned investing her whole strength to have a hold on the man but the moment she saw him carrying his knife higher to attack her, a gasp escaped her mouth before she got still. Only at this moment, she recalled the little life breathing in her.
"Get away,..." She heard Noah attacking the man leaned over her. The moment she saw Seb groaning on the floor she got away crawling back.
She saw Noah not giving him much time and kicked his guts. Sydney shook every time she saw Noah kicking him. Not a minute later many guards filled the space while she gathering all her strength and looked at Nick to motion him to come to her.
"You are fine?" She asked in a whisper grazing his cheek while looking at his father beating the clown he hugged his mom tighter. The room was filled with Noah cursing words and Seb groaning.
Nick started crying louder and sobbed harder hugging Sydney. Setting him over her thighs she hugged him whispering. "You are safe,...I won't let anything happen to you...you are my Nick. Only mine,"
The lump in her throat got larger when the whole episode ran in her mind. The men took Seb away and in half an hour they were still in the same living room. She looked at Noah who was getting his shoulder wrapped while Nick had his head over her lap. He was scared to even in his dream and sobbed in his breathing. She had a cut on her lip with the left side of her face swollen.
She looked at Noah and wondered where he got those cuts but then knew she will only irritate him. So, she chose to look at him getting dressed but the moment he caught her looking at him she lowered her head to look at Nick.
"Thank you," She heard Noah say to the man who was dressing him. The man left and inhaling sharp Sydney tried harder against the urge to ask him.
"Let me take him to his room," Noah walked to her and offered,
"No,...umm,...I will stay with him," Sydney replied in a crack voice.
"You need to rest too, Sydney...Let's take him to our room. Come on,..."
Sydney followed Noah as they entered their room. Amber was sleeping sound and Noah lay Nick beside Amber. But the moment Sydney came to sit beside Nick he held his mom again whispering, "Clown,..."
Noah and Sydney both shared a glimpse of each other before Sydney started patting Nick's head.
"How?..." Sydney asked as she saw him getting out of the closet.
"It is nothing," Noah replied before telling her.
"You should rest, Sydney."
"What about you?" Sydney asked,
"I am not...sleeping tonight," Noah said before taking a seat over a recliner.
She too decided not to sleep but got her eyes heavy in a few seconds. After a while when she opened her eyes she found Noah sitting beside her holding Amber. A smile spread over her lips before she let herself sleep again.
Sydney groaned waking up to her soared muscles for holding Nick for the whole night. Nick was fast asleep and looked peaceful. Amber was there too but there was no Noah. She looked around before finally looking at her back to find him sitting over the recliner. But what caught her attention was the letter in his hand she had been writing for him.
"You are leaving me?" Noah asked,
"I...I was about to tell you." Sydney tried to stay put.
"Why?" Noah interrogated.
"There is no need to carry on if...if you feel burdened." She replied getting her eyes lowered this time.
"What about kids?" She got embarrassed by this question.
"Not everyone gets to live with both of their parents." She offered him a bitter smile as she roams her hand in Nick's hair.
"No,...not our kids," Noah replied making Sydney surprised.
"We can talk about it..." Sydney offered but was cut off when asked,
"What about us?" His question took her by surprise.
"Noah,...you said," Sydney tried to continue but was cut off with.
"Mommy," Nick stirred in his sleep.
"Hey darling, everything's fine, ok?" Sydney replied smiling back. Nick turned to look at Noah who getting up walked to Nick before whispering.
"You are my brave boy?"
"What if they come back?" Nick asked,
"Daddy has fought all the monsters, Nick. You will always be safe." Noah replied making Nick relaxed.
Noah and Sydney both lean in to kiss Nick's head but then stopped looking at each other. Sydney kissed him first then letting Noah follow.
It was after breakfast. Noah had the kids set their Minnie pool and they seemed to enjoy the day with their father.
"They will be going to school tomorrow," Noah said appearing form upfront wearing only his shorts making Sydney shot her head to him.
"That's great,..." Sydney tried to pass him her curled lips, a smile that didn't reach her eyes.
"Nick,...nick is not Lucifer's son. His dad was a cop." Sydney started to explain when Noah responded.
"Hmm,...I got to know about it too, Lucifer was dead all along...I have got a man to find Nick's background." Noah informed and got her all nerved up.
"I,...I won't give Nick to anyone," Noah got alert listening to her all scared.
"I am...Relax, Nick will stay here. I only want him to know about his parents. Even if he has some immediate relatives, we will manage to get custody." This didn't get the worry lines away from her head and she asked,
"What if?..."
"There is no what if? We have the rights over him too. Living with us will benefit him too as he only knows us as his family." Noah turned to look at Nick.
"He is a very strong boy,"
"Yea,..." Sydney sighed out.
Both Noah and Sydney looked at their kids for a few seconds before Noah strike up the conversation, "I wish they grow up in the next second,..." Sydney spared him a look before looking at her kids again to respond.
"I have already lost a lot. I would rather want to live every other second to its full,"
"Nah,...I can't wait for them to grow. I would love to see them sleepless with all the burden of Miller enterprise and enjoy my vacation with my wife on some beautiful island." Noah smiled looking at Sydney while some lines again appeared over Sydney's head.
"Wow,...you are marrying? Kate?" Sydney asked before shaking her head and adding.
"You are not changed. You used to say the same things when I had them in my womb,"
"And, what you used to say," Noah asked,
"I,...used to say that I only want them to be happy and safe," Sydney replied smiling at her kids running around the water.
"I have seen an estate. It is not too far. I,...will live there." Sydney brought up the conversation again,
"And, what you will do?" Noah asked,
"I am not thinking about a job until Shannon is delivered. I...might look for a job after that," Sydney replied and tried to seem strong.
"What kind of job?" Noah came with another question.
"I...am still looking into the matter," Sydney replied not liking the conversation.
"I have a very perfect post for you," Noah offered,
"What?" Sydney's brow shot up.
"My wife?" Noah replied letting out a sarcastic laugh.
"Noah,...about that..." Sydney got still thinking about their very old conversation.
"What?" Noah asked knowing what she was thinking.
"Nothing,...it's just you sound so familiar to someone I know," Sydney again missed the clue making Noah be a little more desperate.
"Come here," Noah forward his hand for her to take. And, the moment she took it he got her in to have her caged to the wall.
"Do you really think I will leave you for anyone else?" He asked darkly.
"What do you mean?" Sydney asked,
"Remember Sydney,...you only belong to me." She noticed his eyes getting dark as he came in for a kiss.
Confused at the change of his behavior she asked, "Noah, you..." but then stopped as if she now understands.
"You are back," She asked with so much hope in her eyes.
"I love you,..." Noah replied,
"I hate you,..." She hit him on his chest making him wince a little.
"Daddy, I am hungry,..." Amber came running to him and he got her up before walking to the kitchen. Noah and Sydney both prepared the meal for their kids.
Kids started talking about their school when Sydney passed him a look leaning to the kitchen counter.
"How can you forget me of all people?" She complained but Noah came to hug her shoulder.
"I asked about you after getting up,...but they said you are no more,...I pass out and next I couldn't recall anything," Noah informed her and made her gulp hard.
"Living without you was suffocation. There was not a single moment when I didn't miss you," She confessed in a cracked voice.
"And, yet you were going to leave me," This made Sydney raise her brows and walk past him. Kids went to play video games in their theatre room. Sydney in an attempt to dissipate the tension in their room got to the stack of her magazines on the side table while Noah checked her out.
"You are not serious," Noah asked darkly.
"What?" Sydney tried to act indifferent.
"I so fucking want you right away,..." Noah got her arm in his hand before pulling her to claim her mouth with his. Her breathing quickened while a tear slips out of her eye. She kissed him harder before working to get him out of his shirt while Noah lifting her dress got her panties down.
Getting her leg over his thigh he entered her while exploring her mouth. Sydney's all senses got occupied while she recalled the day Noah getting shot. Digging her nails over his back she hugged him more.
In seconds, she started crying out his name. But more she called him the more she recalled the day he was motionless on the ground. And, when Noah found her sobbing he hugged her before whispering in her ear.
"I am here, Sydney. I am here. You will always be safe, love...you will always be safe."
Pulling away Sydney looked at his face. She grazed his cheek in wonder before replying.
"Without you is suffocating. But seeing you struggling to live with me...broke me,"
"I am so sorry, Sydney. I am sorry for everything you have to go through because of me," Noah whispered shifting his gaze from her eyes to mouth and saw her gulping hard.
"No,...Noah...you don't need to. In these past days..." She stopped to hold his face in her right hand before whispering, "...I get to see a glimpse of who my Noah truly was. And, you know what?... I wondered how I get this gem of a boy?" She whispered the last part as if telling him a secret.
"A boy?" Noah asked surprised,
"Yea, you acted like one," Sydney laughed looking at his pissed face.
"So, what side of me you preferred?" Noah asked thinking he had put her in a slightly difficult situation.
"I love the Noah who said I do,...I love my Noah...who has this beautiful baggage in his eyes that sync perfectly with me...For me, there is no old or new you, Noah. It is just you." She whispered before coming to kiss him again and breathe in her safest place.
