"Hey," someone drapes thier arm over my shoulder which causes me to involuntarily flinch. Staring at the owner of the arm, I sigh in slight relief and lean into the warmth of thier hand. "What's up with you? Are you okay?" With the way Jerry is so concerned about my welfare, you would think he is my boyfriend or my elder brother. Heaving a deep sigh, I mutter a reply wistfully.
"I'm fine." When I notice he is doing that his fatherly-look that he uses to scrutinise an important situation, I quickly muster my signature smile to assure him that I am okay. Jerry stares at me with utter silence before responding.
"When a lady says she's fine, that is so far from reality. Who are you kidding with this fake smile and the cliché; I'm fine?" I almost laugh at the look of seriousness marring his face right now — mark the keyword almost. Fine, Jerry is the most goofy and outgoing guy I've ever met, but experiencing his stern side, it is something to laugh about without meaning to do so.
I clamp my fingers down on the tip of my spoon firmly — so firm that the spoon leaves a peachy-red imprint on my finger. We are currently in the cafeteria observing our lunch break; and here I am thinking about senior Tobias' condition that refuses to depart from my memory. I can't remember if I even tasted the food I ordered.
Tobias...Epilepsy
"See, you're doing that face again!" Jerry mutters in exasperation, causing the others on our table to look at our direction. Kiki raises an eyebrow at our current position and I quickly recoil from leaning into Jerry's arm; Jide is now staring at me – as if he is trying to probe the truth out of me with his mere eyes.
And wondering where Jamal is, I have not seen him too. He has been scarce these days and I honestly do not care.
"Honestly guys, I'm fine. Stop looking at me like a fragile egg." I scrunch my nose up in a goofy manner to lighten my statement.
"And you didn't touch your food for the past fifteen minutes? So unlikely of you." Jide mumbles lowly. I finally let my spoon fall down with a clattering sound resonating on the ceramic plate.
"Okay, I'm not fine. I swear I'm not." I let it out as I try with all means to hold my tears back. My saving grace is that most students are occupied in thier own gists and all; thereby the usual chattering of students in the cafeteria room drowns my voice from neighbouring tables.
"What is the problem exactly?" Kiki asks with a calculated tone – staring at me with an unwavering expression. Heck, Kiki has been giving me that look since morning and I am not too sure of the reason why. I'm even surprised she finally spoke to me right now because for one, she never spoke to me since the day started.
"I'm worried okay? I don't know how to feel about Tobias condition." I blow my cheeks out and out, trying to avoid the hot upcoming tears to flow out. The squad and his closest family members are the only ones aware of his condition and I am left to wonder why it has to be kept as a huge secret. I mean, what if something happened to him? Why is an ailment of such kept in the dark?
"Tobias will be fine. He's a strong buddy, don't you just worry about him." Jide replies and holds my hand from across the table. I flash him a weak smile in return and face Jerry and Kiki who haven't said anything yet.
"I should have suspected he wanted to spend some time with you; starting from when he sneaked to the party without informing any of us. And even the date too, he never told any of us. Aramide, we are best friends and hiding the single fact that you were going on a date wasn't wise. At least we would have known what to do imagine you told us." That single speech of Jerry cuts through my heart sharply and I feel so guilty.
I initially felt that, telling the guys would be awkward especially Kiki who is the sibling will not allow me to go on a date with him. I never knew he sneaked twice. This is just too much to bear!
No wonder he doesn't do spotlight or live interviews. I never knew the reason why he doesn't attend social functions but now. . .the real intentions are as clear as day.
"You know what," Kiki tosses her unfinished hotdog at the next trashcan before speaking again. "I hate despicable bïtches like you."
PAUSE.
HOLD UP..
My mouth hangs open in utter disbelief; wondering if those words were directed to me or the girl sitting behind me. My brain tries to comprehend the very words she just uttered. Jerry and Jide are clearly shocked out of thier wits too, as they can't wrap thier head around the words she just uttered.
"Kiki, what are you doing?!" Jide who is sitting closer to her, exclaims in whist.
"What? You want me to sit down and watch how she yaps about being a victim of circumstances? She is a cunny and sly bïtch!" Her eyes are trained on me with no expression at all. This is so scary. What did I do? What is she talking about? Is she drunk?
Oh God!
"Kiki enough!" Jerry says through seethed teeth; glaring at her.
"Don't you dare." She faces Jerry with the same unwavering expression which causes him to sigh and rub his forehead wistfully. "And as for you," she faces me again and my body automatically tenses at her sudden change of attitude. I have never felt so humiliated in my lifetime like this. "You are just like the rest. I can't believe you became my friend so that you'll get closer to Toby. I hate you for causing my brother to have a relapse." She finally mutters and I didn't miss the slight drop of tear that slips from her right eye before she storms out of the cafeteria.
Wow.
Oh wow.
Just WOW!
If someone would have told me that Kiki would hold such resentment at me, I would have laughed it off as a 'mission impossible'. My heart clenches so hard that I feel like it is being ripped off by a fierce predator.
The hurt is too much.
The tears I have been trying so much to hold in, start slipping down on thier own accordance. Jide mutters a quick apology to me and hurries off to follow the path Kiki walked through. I am so surprised no one witnessed our little exchange — maybe because Kiki didn't raise her voice at all. Jerry draws his seat closer to mine and wraps his arm around me making sure that my tears soak his blazer instead.
"I hate despicable bïtches like you!"
The words are so fresh in my head. Why would Kiki say such to hurt me? I am yet to recover from the shock of finding out about Tobias condition and now, this?
"Whoa, trouble in paradise?" I hear the familiar voice of Isoken. I raise my head from the crook of Jerry's neck and face her. I am sure by now, my eyes and nose would be sore red. She is standing close to our table, hands on hips, and chewing a bubble gum so loud. She takes Kiki's former seat out and makes herself comfortable on it.
"You saw what happened?" I manage to ask with a hoarse voice. Isoken twirls her braid on her pinky finger before answering.
"Actually, I was about to meet you when I saw oyinbo girl and Jide storming out of the cafeteria an.."
"Her name is Kiki." Jerry cuts her off when she refers to Kiki as oyinbo girl. Isoken clamps her mouth shut as if she is just noticing him and I let a small chuckle out at her mortified expression.
"Oh my! I thought you asswïpes left Aramide alone here. I was about to comfort her for being lonely. That's why I came here sef."
Really Isoken?
"Isoken no need to worry about me. Iyeh?" I mumble lowly, using my hands to wipe the stray tears off my face furiously. She smacks the gum in her mouth and gives me a sceptical look immensely.
"You dey ment? So you think I don't have sense. You are obviously not okay." She chuckles humourlessly and leans in towards my side; and whispers. "If it is that oyinbo girl that is vexing you, tell me now oo. We go beat am till e confess witch." I stifle my laughter at her words. Of course she doesn't like Kiki at all and it is surely vise versa. I can actually say that more than half of CIGs population dislikes Isoken because of her personality.
"Are you kidding me? You come to our table and start insulting our best friend." Jerry interjects with a slight frown. Isoken hisses and flips the bird at him. And again, she doesn't give a damn if Jerry is a celebrity. She talks to anybody the way she likes.
"Bestfriend my foot. Yen yen yen...Ouch!" I subtly kick her foot under the table causing her to yelp. I agree that Kiki said hurtful words to me but that doesn't warrant that she has to rub it on our faces. "I'm saying the truth na. God abeg oh!" Jerry grunts an inaudible remark at her words.
"Anyways, I'm here because the dean of sciences requested you see her at the office right now." My heart rate accelerates with so much agility hearing those words.
Dean of sciences?
As in, the DEAN OF OVERALL SCIENCES?
"What did I do?" Anyone standing or sitting at a very close proximity to me, would not be able to miss the uncanny amount of fear immensed in my voice. She shrugs her shoulders lazily, obviously having a zero clue about my supposed call by the dean.
"Have you ever been to the admin's block before?" Jerry asks immediately Isoken takes her leave. And I notice Jerry wasn't comfortable with her presence at all. It was when she left that he became more relaxed with me. Definitely understandable by me — I'm only wondering why I am the most comfortable person when I'm with Isoken though. It's either people are talking shit about her, or they are uncomfortable with her presence.
"No." I mumble with a hoarse voice as my face is marred with a deep frown.
"Alright, let me escort you then." He flashes his set of dazzling and white dentition, his face dipped with a coy smile.
"Oh Jerry, you don't have to bother." I am still lazily sprawled on my seat, musing over the fact that Kiki just said something ridiculous and outrageous...while Jerry is already on his feet trying to convince me to go to the dean's office.
"Jerry stop it!" I mumble quietly as he starts tugging at the sleeves of my blazer.
"Come on! I know you don't want me to create a scene right here..." He trails off and wiggles his eyebrows stylishly. I grumble under by breath and allow him to tug me out of my seat as I sluggishly trail behind him, out of the cafeteria.
Throughout our excruciating and everlasting journey to the administrative block, we dwelled in uttermost silence. Jerry didn't attempt to make his usual funny retorts or joke that can light up an arena. I guess he knew the gravity of the whole situation doesn't call for jokes.
"The Administrative quarters of CIGs." He reads out loud, as we reach the pavement of the gigantic three-storey building. I giggle softly with the way he pronounces the words with a falsetto Spanish accent.
"Welcome to the college of science." This time, I am the one who reads the words out when we reach the secluded spot meant for the science department.
"See, you're becoming less moody." Jerry bumps his shoulder against mine and chuckles softly when I groan at what he did.
"Why would the dean of science request for my presence? What have I done? Oh God!" I mumble in despair and immediately freeze when we finally made a stop at the entryway. "Jerry...I can't go in there. Please follow me." My voice comes out as a pathetic wail as I desperately hold unto his right arm.
"Souka." He simply replies and he knows that single act will cause me to snap.
"Stop relying me with your useless anime terms!" I rub my head wistfully and wish I could punch the hell out of him. He laughs and quietly wraps his arm around my frame completely. My upcoming anxiety bubbles down just because of his overwhelming hug and expensive cologne seems to work magic on me.
As usual, his hugs are calm, comforting, friendly and so soothing. I let myself to be absorbed into the warmth of the embrace and I notice my tensive body has toned down a notch. Before we could have the chance to pull out of the entrance, the door thrusts open without warning and reveals the unfriendly face of the deans' personal secretary.
"What are yo..." Her speech is cut short when she takes note of my companion.
"Oh hey! You are Jerry Akintunde right? What can we do for you today?" Her face suddenly switches to auto-friendly mode and this causes me to snicker. Just because Jerry is a celebrity, she just ignored my existence blatantly.
"Um, actually my friend is the one that was requested by the dean. I have no business here afterall." His hands are already shoved into his pockets in a sly manner and I have to bite back my incoming laughter at the way he responded. He didn't mean to sound rude honestly — but the way he sounded, I am sure 'miss secretary' would feel what I felt.
"Oh...okay. That is no problem at all." Her eyes strays to gaze me up and down. I didn't miss the scornful look she throws my way. "Follow me then, miss..." She trails off to get my name.
"Aramide Bola." I answer curtly. She rolls her eyes and opens the door further so that I would enter. Before I could go in fully, Jerry holds my left arm out thereby halting my movement momentarily.
"Be strong okay? I'll be waiting for you at the reception." I flash him a wry smile while the secretary clears her throat noisily at the small exchange between us.
"Sorry ma." I reply in a non-apologetic tone and step into the office before she closes the door full time. I sheepshisly follow her as she rounds a sharp bend and knocks at the door at the right. My heart does a rapid backflip when I hear; 'come in!' The secretary shoots me a wry smirk visibly screaming, get in without the assistance of Jerry. I inhale deeply – and finally gather up my crumbled self to enter the office.
On entering the office that is cooconed with the extra cool effect of air-conditioner, the whiff of lavender sensual scent and the sophisticated equipments are enough to intimidate me.
"Good day ma." My head is already in a bowing posture since I couldn't look at the dean directly at her fierce gaze.
"Welcome dear. Sorry for disrupting your lunch break, because we have an urgent matter at hand." I meekly nod my head to acknowledge her words. "By the way, you didn't acknowledge our visitor." At her statement, it then occured to me that I missed the person that was sitting across her large mahogany desk. I raise my head slightly to greet the woman just to get the greatest shock of the day.
"Wh—wh..good d...day ma." I stutter terribly still in daze. The woman looks to be in her late thirties or so. Her dressing is definitely a state of filthy wealth. . . but that isn't what fazes me. The fact that her uncanny resemblance to someone I must have encountered strikes me deeply.
"Hello dear, we meet again." Her smile is so pretty and heart warming — contagious even. I rack my brain back and forth, trying to remember where I have seen her before. But it just seems like, it refuses to work at all. "If this is the person that is going to tutor my son, I am hundred percent okay with it." The woman faces the dean with a very radiant smile which leaves me confused over and over again.
"I'm sorry?" I manage to ask in bewilderment.
"Oh, pardon Mrs Nonso enthusiasm. She has been worried no one would be good enough to tutor her son."
Okay...
So I am to tutor someone's child? A guy for that matter? Why me?
"Trust me I assessed your mid-test CA test scripts and was surprised you aced the science subjects. Especially physics and chemistry." The dean says with a blank face and surfs through some files while speaking. "And through some hear says, we heard you are closer to the boys."
My eyes widen so large as I put two and two together.
So I am going to tutor....
"So you are going to tutor Jamal Nonso on Physics especially. It is okay if you want to back out also, because it would sound absurd if you don't help this woman who helped you at the hospital and it would also be absurd if we let our dear celebrity have a bad educational record. So the ball is in your court miss Aramide."
It clicks.
It all clicks in my head!
I should have known when she said, Mrs Nonso, she was referring to Jamal's mother. And now I remember her face. She was the female doctor who nursed me back to life when I was drugged at the party. So this is Jamal's mother?
Why do they feel like I am the best candidate to tutor Jamal of all people?
The ball is in my court...
The ball is in my damn court!
