Chapter 26
Hiiiii! I've become more motivated because one of my friends started talking t me again! This chapter is dedicated to her, even though she doesn't use Wattpad, I'd like to thank her for being my friend <3
It was a beautiful morning, though every cat in the forest couldn't relax. The warriors, fighters, and medicine cats had waited in the forest, half way between their camp and the rogues camp. Cats would die and Cranefrost knew it. But could she handle it? That was a different question.
The moon was full as Starclan watched over them. They too were tense, for the path that led ahead was too dark for them to predict.
A twig snapped.
Hundreds of pairs of eyes gazed forward as a large group of ferocious and blood thirsty rogues stepped into the light. Snipe was leading them, and she wore a sneer that Cranefrost wanted to rip off her face.
I have to be patient, Cranefrost thought. Redstar stepped forward. "We'll give you one final chance," his baritone meow echoed throughout the forest. "Leave now and never come back. Stop harassing our warriors. We will not harm you if you leave."
Snipe let out an amused yowl. "You're so gullible!" The smile vanished from her face and it twisted in anger and determination. "We aren't the ones leaving. You are."
And she leapt into the crowd of cats, her claws unsheathed and her eyes brimming with threat. The fight had begun.
Cranefrost growled and ran. Her legs took long strides that were fuelled by energy that came from her emotions. Anger. Pain. Loss. Loyalty. Determination.
She jumped onto Snipe's back, swiping her long claws across it. Snipe threw her off, but Cranefrost stood up again. The small dark she cat kicked at Cranefrost with a strong hind leg and she lost her balance. As Cranefrost fell to the ground, her fore paw flew forward and Snipe tripped over it. Together they struggled on the ground.
Cranefrost got up, panting. She scratched Snipe's face, and watched as it split. Blood gushed out of the deep cut, and ice was starting to form. Snipe fell limp.
Was this it?
Suddenly, Cranefrost's whole world flipped upside down. She couldn't breathe- the air had escaped from her lungs. Snipe had slammed her onto the floor and now she was winded.
Cranefrost was pinned. She couldn't run anywhere. There was no escaping her fate. Snipe's long claws held her in place, and she couldn't breathe.
Cranefrost looked around. Cats were dying. They were losing. This wasn't how Cranefrost wanted to die. She wanted to get up and help them! She hated the feeling of being chained up, useless while her clan mates suffered.
But she couldn't speak or move.
Cranefrost shut her eyes. Her heart sank. Why did it have to end like this?
Her heart skipped one beat. And then two.
And then Cranefrost stopped breathing.
I've failed, Cranefrost thought, her mind seconds away from losing consciousness.
Suddenly, Cranefrost heard a loud yowl. The force holding her down vanished, and the weight was gone. Cranefrost coughed and spluttered, standing up dizzily. Redstar was there, fighting Snipe.
The second patrol had come.
"Go protect Aldercoat!" Redstar yowled to Cranefrost while fighting. Cranefrost turned to see Aldercoat being swiped and scratched at by a white rogue with black patches.
She started to sprint towards him, but she lost her position as dust flew up in front of her. When it cleared, Cranefrost saw a sandy flash, and she realised that Russel had beaten Cranefrost to it. The amber eyes tom leapt on the rogue's back, scratching at it, and then jumped off. The black and white tom tried to swipe at Russel, but Russel blocked every battle move.
He used to be a rogue with them, Cranefrost realised. She watched the battle in admiration, and then remembered Russel could still be in danger. She started running toward them, but by the time she got there, the rogue flopped down like dead prey.
Her eyes lit up and she turned to Russel. "Good jo-" And then she saw Russel's state. He too looked defeated. He had a large scratch on the side of his face, and it was pouring with blood. His matted fur was drenched in blood, and he limped.
Russel flopped to the floor, and Cranefrost approached him. "W-will I make it to Starclan?" He whispered.
"Of course you will, Songpaw will be waiting for you. I promise."
A faint glimmer of happiness twinkled in Russel's eyes. "All is good then. I will watch over you. Thank you for taking me in." He closed his eyes and looked peaceful.
Aldercoat stared at the tom, sadness brimming in his eyes. "Oh, Russel," he whispered hoarsely.
"Go treat your wounds. We need you in case any other cats are injured." Cranefrost told him gently. Aldercoat nodded, and Cranefrost leapt into the battle once again.
In the sea of cats, Snipe fought viciously. Redstar had lost a life to her, and was receiving his next one on the floor. Cleardawn and Snowfall filled in, and a look of hatred burned in Snowfall's eyes.
Suddenly, a cat jumped on Cranefrost's back. It was Adderfang. He looked half dead and his eyes brimmed with rage and fury. He looked mad.
He didn't give Cranefrost any time to think. All she felt was confused- why was he fighting her? Weren't they on the same team? And then she realised he was a traitor. But by the time she noticed it, Adderfang had pinned her.
A flash of ginger and white swiped Adderfang and he yowled. Turning around, he tried to defend himself, but his attacker kept aiming good blows onto his shoulder. Adderfang managed to kick the cat's shoulder, but he lost his balance and his attacker continued their streak.
A look of horror came across Cranefrost's face as she realised who the cat attacking Adderfang was.
Adderfang fell limp as Acornpaw gave him a final scratch. Acornpaw's shoulder look dislocated and her wounds from the day before had opened up.
"Heh," she wheezed as she sat down. "I killed him!" She tried to say it with enthusiasm, but all of her energy had left her.
"Acornpaw, you foolish, foolish cat!" Cranefrost choked.
"I used the move you taught me! Did you see it? Did I do well?" Acornpaw meowed, her eyes fluttering.
"Yes, they were perfect. In fact, would you like your warrior name now?" Cranefrost asked.
"Yes..." Acornpaw said with a far away look in her eyes.
"From now on, you will be known as Acornshine. Thunderclan honours you for your optimistic spirit and courage." Cranefrost meowed solemnly.
Acornshine gazed up at her with huge amber eyes. "I like that name. I like it..." She meowed.
Those were her last words.
"No! No! Acornshine, come back! Wake up!" Cranefrost cried. "Please... please. I'm sorry! I'm sorry I couldn't save you..." She couldn't believe it. Acornshine was so young. But she had risked her life to save Cranefrost.
I could've killed him myself! Cranefrost wanted to yowl. But what was done was done. Acornshine was going to Starclan now.
Cranefrost lay there, next to Acornshine's body, in the middle of the battle. Suddenly, she heard a yowl. Cranefrost gritted her teeth. "YOU!" She bellowed.
She ran to where Cleardawn and Snowfall were wrestling Snipe. Cranefrost dragged her claws across Snipe's throat. Snipe fell limp. Her eyes became glassy. Before she died, her pupils grew to twice the size.
"My daughters," she panted. It was Flamebriar. "I'm sorry I could not be there to watch over you. I'm sorry Storm convinced me to join. She said- she said if I did, I'd see you again. But I'm a completely different cat. Her spirit overtook me. If Starclan gives me a second chance, I'll reunite with your father. Kill me now..."
Cleardawn and Snowfall hesitated. Cranefrost looked at them. She couldn't believe they believed her! She spat.
"She's a fake! Can't you see?! She killed our own father!" Turning to Snipe, she hissed, "you deserve no place in Starclan!" And then, she sliced at the same spot on Snipe's throat and she died.
Cranefrost was supposed to be happy- it was finally over! But no. She had lost to many. It wasn't worth it.
She may as well die.
