Chapter Twenty-Three
It had been nearly two weeks since Sophie's accident. They had kept her over night for a few days, but we were back at home, living out normal lives again.
"Normal."
Who am I kidding? Things are far from normal.
But we are working on that.
I got my phone back, but I don't get on it. Too many people trying to contact me, wishing me the best of luck with my life. And I was sick of it.
I thought about deleting all of my social media, but I decided against it.
But looking back on it now, I wish I would have.
It has been two weeks since Sophie's accident. It was late at night, but since I was worried about falling asleep, I stayed away, reading.
But a message notification dings on my phone, startling me.
It was a Facebook notification, probably just another person "Sending me happy thoughts and hugs."
I looked at the name.
Amy.
But she was dead. But I saw her. Or did I?
I unlocked my phone and read the message.
It's sad that your aunt took a little off road detour. Is she feeling any better? Surprised she lived to tell the tale. Can't say the same about your little sister and parents though, can I? Oops.
Anger swelled within me. I angrily typed my message back to her.
Who are you, and why are you messing with me? I never even knew you!
I eagerly waited for an answer, but it didn't come. Flustered, I stood up and went into the kitchen. Sitting at the dinning room table was Aunt Sophie, a cup of coffee in her hand.
It was dark outside. And nearly eleven at night. Why on earth would Sophie be up this late?
"Aunt Sophie? Are you okay?" I ask, taking a step closer to her.
We haven't spoken much since the accident. She's been asleep for most of the time. We make small talk. But she isn't the same. I never see her painting anymore. But I don't blame her, some people go a little crazy after a traumatic experience. Believe me, I know.
"Sophie?" I ask, getting closer. The only light in the house, aside the one from my room, was the dinning room light that hung over Sophie, creating shadows in the corners.
"Are you okay? Why aren't you asleep?"
"The nightmares...."
Sophie didn't sound the same. My heart thumped in my chest. "Sophie?"
Sophie dropped her coffee cup, shattering it, spilling coffee everywhere.
It scares me, and I jump back. Sophie seems to be scared too, suddenly wide awake and alert.
"Dani? What's going on?" Sophie asks me, her voice panicked and worried.
"I don't know, I walked in here and you just dropped your coffee." I say, trying to catch my breath.
"Oh. I must have been sleep walking. I've been doing that more often. I didn't mean to frighten you. I'm sorry." Sophie says, reaching for a towel.
I help Sophie clean up her mess before going back into my room, still not able to calm down after what Sophie had said.
The nightmares.
Goosebumps rippled my skin as I thought, pulling out my phone again.
Your parents never bothered to tell you about me. Sad. They never even told you the truth.
What on earth did Amy mean? I was so confused, and too tired to think straight, and make sense of it all.
What do you mean?
I waited, knowing she was typing. It reminded me of a time when Amity and I fought, and the little bubble appeared, meaning she was typing, and it took her forever to write out a long reply. Turns out, she was right, but I was never willing to admit it.
You will learn soon enough my sweet child. It's past your bedtime. Go to sleep.
Creeped out, I place my phone on my bedside table and turn off my lamp. Slowly, I began to drift off into a deep sleep.

I woke up.
My room was freezing, and I felt cold. I heard a nurse shuffling around beside me, I think getting ready to feed me again. Which, I was glad, I was starving.
"Looks like Miss-Nurse-Puncher is awake."
"Don't call her that." A softer voice rings in my ear, which I immediately recognize as Aunt Sophie.
"Sorry. Keep forgetting you are related to this one." The first voice mumbles.
I hear what sounds like a sigh come from Sophie, as she comes over to me and smiles, a few tears stinging her eyes.
"Hey Dani. You remember me?" Sophie's voice is full of sorrow.
I nod. "Sophie. How could I not remember you?"
Sophie's face looks grim, though a smile spreads across her face.
Nurse Number One feeds me a soup, which tastes awful and dull. But I ate, I was too hungry to complain.
"When will I get to go downstairs and talk to Rose again?" I say to the nurses, but mostly Sophie.
"Considering that you punched a nurse down there last time, not for a very long time." Nurse One says, getting on my nerves.
"I didn't mean to!" I yell.
Sophie jumps away.
"We will leave you to throw yourself a pity party in here." Nurse One says, leaving with Sophie trailing behind her.
I try to wait for them to come back, to try and get more answers, but my eyelids began to slip in front of me, pulling me back into what I call reality.

I woke up, sweat trickling down my face and spine.
I thought that my nightmare was over, but clearly life likes to prove me wrong.
My breathing slows down, as I lay back down. Closing my eyes, trying to fall back asleep.
But then, I hear it.
It sounds like glass.
Cracking.
Breaking.
Hitting the floor below.
The window.
I hop up, and run to the living room.
The window was shattered.
The cold air and wind blew threw the window, making my blood run cold. I look on the ground, to see what had cause the break.
To my horror, I found a rock.
But not just any rock.
Written in what looked like white chalk, scribbled on the rock read the words:
You are mine.
